Time Capsule - 1TB

I bought the time capsule for two reasons:
1. To back up my files automatically
2. To use as an external hard disk that i could access files from.
Two questions:
1. How do I access the time capsule to see my back ups?
2. How do I set the time capsule up so that i can have it half for back ups and half for file storage?
Many thanks

If you remove the HD from your TC to partition it, that voids the warranty.
Mixing Time Machine backups and other data on a TC's hard drive presents some problems. See #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details and some workarounds.
See #Q1 there to set up Time Machine to use your Time Capsule.
Once Time Machine is set up, you should be able to see them via the Time Machine app in your Dock.

  • I have two time capsules (1TB, 2TB) and want to use one for another set of Macs (my Family). How do I set both up and keep all the Macs from joining both Time Capsules?

I Have two Time Capsules (1TB and 2TB) and want to set one for business and the other for family - networking seperate Macs to each.

Both should be plugged into the network with ethernet.. if at all possible.
If you have a router already then both bridged otherwise one set to router and one to bridge.
How do you access the TC? Ethernet or wireless?
Are they located in the same area?
You could set different wireless networks.. if they use wireless.. this is nice easy way to do it.
You can set user account in the TC you want the business one to join with.. that will prevent access by the family.
So there is a number of ways.. none are particularly secure btw.. the TC is a home not a business device.. if anybody wants access they press the reset for one second.. pofff all the passwords are default for 5min.. to allow people who forget their password to get access.
On ML you can encrypt TM backups.. this is better for security if that is the problem.. and still use different user profile to prevent access.

  • Can I use Time Capsule 1TB as an external hard drive tos tore my music library(but with cable connection, not WI-FI)

Can I use my Time Capsule 1TB as an external hard drive to store my music library but with a cable connection(Ethernet or USB) and not Wi-Fi.

    Yes, with the following warnings.
    1. A 1TB TC is a Gen3 or earlier and can die at a moments notice.. So backup is essential.
    2. A Gen1 or 2 is slow.. even over ethernet they were processor bound and so transfer speeds are not great.. a USB2 plugged into the computer will be faster. Gen3 is about 50% better as the processor was upgraded by 50% speed.
    3. TC has no built in backup.. TM cannot backup network drives.
    4. TC is designed to spin up slowly and spin down quickly.. you will have issues with itunes constantly losing the library.
    5. You cannot use USB to the TC.. it is a network drive. If you want to use USB directly on the computer buy a USB drive.. but buy as fast a drive as your Mac supports.. Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2
USB3 is cheap and very good.. but the port is only from 2012 so check your Mac specs.
Thunderbolt whilst being super fantastic and around since 2011, has a bank account clearing price although there are Thunderbolt to esata converters.. for around $160. esata falls between usb3 and fw800.
FW800 from WD is no better than USB2 but other brands it can be twice the speed of usb2.
USB2 is the worst. But still faster than a TC.

  • HT3728 Optimisation of Time Capsule 1tb, Apple TV and bt broadband

Please can you offer advice on the correct configuration for Apple Time Capsule (1tb), Apple TV and bt broadband hub that will provide the optimum performance of the wireless broadband and the hardware.
Thank you in advance for your advice/response.

The TC should plug into the BT hub by ethernet to WAN port..
The TC will be in bridge mode.
You will create a wireless network in the TC.. It is then up to you if you use the same SSID =Network name as the BT Hub or a different name.. the roaming network should work fine.. but sometimes it is easier to just turn off the wireless in the BT Hub and just use the TC.. a bit of trial and error here is the only way to find out.
What do you hope to do with the TC other than wireless network?? It is really not able to store movies etc.. because the ATV is not a media player .. it is a streamer. You need something like a computer or ipad to stream to the ATV. (Unless you JB a Gen1 or Gen2 ATV).

I am having problems with printing wirelessly from my time capsule 1tb. I currently have a hp 5510v office all in one printer and drivers can not be found to support printing wirelessly however it can print via usb. What I need is help in picking out a new all in one printer that can print wirelessly from time capsule 1tb. Please help

    Hi,
my hp photosmart C6180 all in one works flawlessly with it plugged in to my time capsule all functions.
I used to have it set up using it wirelessly from the printer however for some reason after a update (i think) it stopped working & would not print so had to plug in to time capsule.

  • Setup older Time Capsule 1TB for wireless connection via newest Airport Configuration

    Hi guys
I have a Time Capsule 1TB (first generation I think) which works fine. I don't like to many cables on my desk, and now that I have my new iMac next to my MacBook, I would like to setup the TC as part of a wireless network (so that it doesn't create a new network and I also don't need an Ethernet cable from TC to Computer of from Modem to TC).
Now, in the 5.6 Airport Configuration, no problem at all to get this fixed, but the new generation makes me a little crazy.
So: how can I setup the TC as a part of an existing WI-FI network with the newest Airport Configuration and so I don't need Ethernet in any way?
    Thanks!

BUTT.. if you want to.. there is no reason you cannot use a big UGLY FATT BUTT.. v6 utility has taken away loads of useful things.. !!
Install 5.6 utility on Mountain Lion.. this is well worth while.. Some stuff is just better done manually.
Google as there are a number of methods.. here is mine. It has the advantage of using the free utility unpkg. Not pretty but works easy peasy.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Time Capsule 1TB Will this unit still be compatible with Lion OSX ,As I have not switched yet until other programs I have installed on my mac are up to speed

I have had my eye on one of these for quite some time in the past and up until just very recently have puchased a 1TB Time Capsule at rather quite a reasonable price or so I had thought compared to what they had been priced at originally in the past which I had thought to be a bit over the top as is with most of apple's products or should I more say marketing tactic's,
Anyway I was just wanting to know in general is this unit already so to speak on it's way out or becoming obsolete in comparison to the 2TB's and 3TBs Time Capsules ,
Not the implicating the obvious being storage in differences but more so the compatibility issue side of things,
In short will this unit still work with OSX Lion for example, or is it only limited to Leopard and Snowleopard,
The place I had purchased this unit from are more or less in the dark themselves and although more than helpful are more a musical instrument outlet than a computer store as the decision was my choice alone in which I need not to be convinced,
Although I have purchased this item I am yet to recieve as this unit was the one of the last in the country and is to be shipped in from out of town,
But has given me time to think of such in the process during as this unit is no longer advertised amongst it bigger companions,
I use my mac or mac's mainly for composing music with such software as Pro Tools 8 soon to be 9 and also Live 8 Studio as I don't plan to plan to change over to Lion OSX until these programs are up to speed and speaking the same language,

    Yes, it's compatible with Lion.

  • Time capsule + 1TB external HD and 2 macbookpros

How do I go about setting up Time Capsule for 2 notebooks? I have a printer attached to the USB port and have gotten a 1 TB HD and a powered USB hub. I'd like to put a 200 gb notebook on the Time Capsule and a 500 gb notebook on the 1 TB external drive. Presently, I've been running the small notebook on the TC but have just migrated the data on the HD to the 500 gb notebook. Can you suggest steps on how to go about this?

    LannyRLevenson wrote:
I was running TC on the original 200 GB notebook
To avoid confusion, try to distinguish between Time Capsule (an Apple combination AirPort router and backup drive) and Time Machine (backup software).
but haven't used it with the external HD or the new 500 GB notebook. Should both notebooks be running (attached with ethernet cable) when I go to configure the TC to share the attached notebook over the network?
An initial Time Machine backup can run faster if it is run over an Ethernet cable rather than over Wi-Fi. I'm not sure what you mean by "share the attached notebook over the network". What is it about the "notebook" that you want to share and to what do you want to share it?
Where do I find "sparsebundle" file?
It should be on the network drive where Time Machine has been writing its backups. (Time Machine backups written to a locally-attached drive are named differently.)

  • I have a 1st Gen Time Capsule 1tb. It turns on, boots up and turns green for 5-10 mins, but then turns solid orange and then blinks orange.  I have removed the hard drive and replaced the power supply . . . still the same problem.  Suggestions?

I purchased a used 1st Gen Time Capsule with a 1 tb hard drive.
When I plugged it in and did the initial setup, it worked fine, but gave me a hard drive error.  A few minutes later the green light turned solid orange, then blinking orange, then the status light went off.  The lights in back stayed on.
I removed the hard drive and rebooted, it turned green for 5-10 minutes then reverted back to a solid orange, blinking orange, then went off.
Next I purchased a remanufactured internal power supply, and installed it (without the hard drive in).  It turned green almost immediately.  After about 15-20 minutes, I decided to try to install the hard drive again, booted it up, and tried to erase the hard drive with was working properly according to the software.  It stopped erasing the disc after about 20 minutes and turned solid orange again, then blinking, then no status light  (but back lights were still lit).
I'm a bit flabbergasted at this point, any suggestions on what to do next?  I think i've pretty much replaced everything except the logic board, but can't seem to find any information on the symptoms of a logic board malfunction.
    Thanks!!!!!!!

A Gen3 is identical board to a Gen4 although they have some differences in firmware and wireless card was updated on every model.. but a Gen3 is substantially faster than Gen1, Gen2 which also have identical boards.
You can with careful shopping get a Gen3 pretty cheap.
Most use a delta power supply which I think is a lot better than the flextronics used in most Gen1/2
You can sell back the parts to ebay.. people still would buy the power supply etc. Even just the case can be useful to a repairer.
But if the board is gone.. it is hard to repair.. not impossible.. but hard.
Gen 3 and Gen 4 are not without faults.
    See this page.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
I have fixed it a different way.. by using the small converters you can buy in bulk from ebay for $1 each.. KIS3R33 .. they produce 3.3V at 2A peaking at 3A.. amazing.. I keep using them to replace onboard power converters by removing the inductor and simply power directly.. the end result has worked great. You can simply change the resistors around and get any output from 1v to 20v depending on input.
Is it worth doing it .. no of course not.. it will waste many more hours than $50 is worth.. but it is kind of fun that you can actually make things work again.
Here is a pic of the Gen 3 totally powered by me. All onboard power removed.
This was to track down the fault in the Gen3.. but I am kind of pleased that it ended up neat enough and reliable enough to work for more than a year.. the Gen3 still serves as a way to get Netflix via network for a friend running 24/7.
The units supply (from left to right)
    1v, 1.1v, 3.3v, 5v, 1.8v
It is feed by 12v supply which is also directly connected to the hard disk.
So it is possible to fix.. !! Only got to be a bit crazy.

  • Trouble communicating with My new Time capsule 1TB

I am having trouble picking up the new time capsule that we got all other computer we have are picking up fine

You may need to update 10.4 to the current level (10.4.11) to get a response. your profile says you are at 10.4.3.
This is from the Time Capsule system requirements:
For shared hard drive: Mac with Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later

  • I just purchased a time capsule 1TB and the installation instructions don't really say weather I have to run a ethernet wire from my modem or will simply plugging it in run it....wire or not? sorry folks I'm a bit of a computer illerate

Question Do I have to wire the time capsule to my modem or will it perform wirelessly . I am just using it for everyday backup   thanks community

A Time Capsule is a combination wireless router and server grade hard drive. You can get rid of your existing wireless router if you want and replace it with the Time Capsule. This way you can use the same wireless network for your Internet access and for your Time Machine backups done wirelessly in the background via the same wireless network.

  • Problems BackUp New MacBook Pro to Time Capsule 1Tb

    Hello
I tried to backup my new replaced MacBook Pro to the Time Capsule. This went wrong so I decided to format my time capsule (erase with zeros).
Then I setup the Time Capsule again and start the Backup. My MacBook Pro ist filled with 416Gb Data. Connected for this initial Backup is over 1000Mb/s Ethernet. Everytime my Backup stucks, sometimes after 1 Gb, 2.7. 19Gb was the largest amount I was able to backup. When I after hours on non copying manually stop the backup, it takes again hours before the Time Machine Software goes to idle. Mostly it goes so long that I decide to reboot the MacBook
I also have repaired my HD with the HArd Disk Utility Program, no result. For Secure Reason I cloned my MacBook woth superDuper to an external HD without any Problem.
Ist their a way to delete all the old backup file from my hd? My MacBook was migrated form an older MacBook Pro, maybe some TM index files are corrupted
How can I test if the harddisk is really reliable? Has the Time Capsule a builtin SMART function. Could it be usefull to take out the HD from the Time Capsule and do a low levelformat in a windows computer?
    Any Tips

See #D2 and #D6 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If none of the things there help, copy and post the +TM Buddy+ messages here (per #D2), or see if any of them are in the Contents of the Troubleshooting Tip.

Do you mean the Time Machine backups on the TC? If so, you can just delete the sparse bundle.
Could it be usefull to take out the HD from the Time Capsule and do a low levelformat in a windows computer?
That would void the warranty; and probably format it in a way that OSX and Time Machine cannot use.

  • Extending Network With Skh HD, Time Capsule 1TB and Airport Express

    Hi,
I'm struggling to achieve what I thought to be an easy setup process.
    *What I want to achieve?:*
    * Ground Floor - Sky HD Router with Sky Wireless Network & Time Capsule 1 TB(choice to connect Time Capsule by either WAN Ethernet or over wi-fi?)
    * First Floor - IMac and MacMini connected wirelessly, along with Airport Express to extend wireless network
    * Loft - Apple TV connected to Cinema setup, with need to be able to connect to Sky HD Wireless network
Note/Problenms: It doesn't appear to be possible to extend the Sky HD Wireless Network via Time Capsule using the wireless option? Error reads "not able to extend wireless network etc...". Secondly, as a result the WiFi signal in the Loft for the Apple TV HD is 50% approx. The download speeds for movies etc is also sufficiently slow that repeat buffering is required. Not ideal.
    *Current Setup:*
    * Ground Floor - TC connected to Sky HD Router via WAN Ethernet cable. Creating New Network, named exactly the same as the original Sky HD Wireless Network e.g. "SKY08323"
    * First Floor - IMac and MacMini connected wirelessly to SKY08323 network. Airport Express connected wirelessly to same network.
    *Possible Enhancement?*
I've tried a couple of times to extend the range of the Wireless network. I First tried to do this as explained by extending the Sky HD Router network wirelessly (not possible it seems). I then connected via Wan Ethernet and setup TC and AirPort Express to interact over a WDS. TC = Main Base Station and AirPort Express = Relay Station. This seemed to setup ok but once both were restarted both TC and AE were flashing Amber and AE was no longer visible in Airport Utility.
If someone would be kind enough just to outline a step by step approach for setting up my Sky Network and being able to extend it via TC and AE, then I would be really grateful.
Many thanks and Happy New Year!
    Eugene

If someone would be kind enough just to outline a step by step approach for setting up my Sky Network and being able to extend it via TC and AE, then I would be really grateful.
As you have surmised, you will NOT be able to extend the wireless range of your Sky HD Router with the Time Capsule (TC) ... at least not wirelessly.
You basically have two options: 1) Run Ethernet between the ground floor and the loft, or 2) Consider deploying Powerline adapters. These adapters take advantage of your home's electrical circuit to create a pseudo Ethernet one.
In either case, the two routers would be interconnected by Ethernet and the TC could be place in the loft. You would then reconfigure the TC as a bridge to allow the Sky router to continue to provide both the NAT & DHCP services for all network clients regardless of which router they are connected to. In addition, you would configure the TC to use the same Network Name & wireless security type so that, for example, you could roam with a wireless laptop between floors and still be on the "same" network.

  • Extend ethernet ports on my Time Capsule 1TB

    Hi,
I need more ethernet ports for my time capsule. Somebody told me that a Switch would do the job. Now I need to know if a normal switch would do the job, or if I need a GIGABIT switch..
    Thx for your help!

Depends upon the speed of the devices you are going to connect. Just purchase the gigabyte switch and make it simple. These switches are auto adjusting anyway.

  • Time Machine Eating Time Capsule (1TB)

I have two machines being backed up regularly. Each is about 130GB worth of data. For some reason, after the initial backup on one of the iMacs, every time it backs up (on the hour), it backs up around 28GB of supposedly new data which I know I don't have. At this rate, my 1TB TC will be full in a few weeks. What is going wrong here? I was under the impression it would only backup data that was new or modified.
    Thx,
    Jed

One other thing....the size of my VMWare Virtual Machine is exactly 28GB. I assume this is what is being backed up. I don't modify much on this VM, I just run certain programs I have to have for work. Is there a way to selectively back this up if this turns out to be the problem?
    Jed
Well, there's your answer. Each time you open your Virtual Machine, the disk image (which is 28GB) gets changed. It doesn't matter how small of a change it is, but the whole disk image will be backed up because it is only seen as one file in OS X. Within VMWare, it's seen as a disk but outside of it it's one file.
You can choose to have Time Machine exclude the file.
