Time Machine back-up not completing

Had bad HD replaced on my iMac by Apple. I updated the OS to Mountain Lion, boot in restore mode, start the restore from the last back up, get the "restoring..." dialog box with the progress bar, but it just keeps running and never finishes. Neither the iMac internal drive nor the external drive I use for Time Machine back-up seem to be doing any read/write activity. I even let it run over night justto see and nothing. Any ideas on what might be going wrong?

Disconnect and connect the external disk again. It happened the same to me and this solved my issue

time machine back up not completed due to backup disk image "/volumes/data/.....imac.sparsebundle" is already in use.  How do I fix?

Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Insert the power cable back in the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the problem 90% of the time. If no luck, see #C12 in this great support document by Pondini:

  • Time machine back up not working

Hi, I recently had to put in new hard drive in my macbook pro because old one failed. I plugged in my external hard drive to get all my files back, then used time machine option because thats what I had been doing before with my external hard drive although I had not backed it up for 2 months. That worked fine and my computer looks the same but when I tried to do a time machine back up like usual it says there is not enough space. When I open time machine there is only one back up. please help?

The backup drive has malfunctioned and corrupted itself. If that has ever happened before, or if it ever happens again, replace the drive. You may want to consider replacing it anyway for the safety of your data.
You should start another backup now, if you don't already have one, on a different drive. One backup is not enough to be safe.
If you choose to keep using the problem drive (which I don't recommend), turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane, then unmount and remount the backup volume. Launch Disk Utility, select the volume, and run Repair Disk. That operation may take several hours. If it doesn't solve the problem, you'll have to erase the volume and start over. Don't do that unless you have at least one other complete backup. Remember to turn TM back ON.
If the backup drive is internal or on an eSATA bus, and Disk Utility displays a message about a "S.M.A.R.T. error," the drive has irreparably failed and must be replaced immediately. You can't go on using it. A drive connected via USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt doesn't show a S.M.A.R.T. status.

  • Time machine back up- not enough space  so can't back up?

hi my computer entire hard drive is 2TB and only 1Tb used. and my external hard drive(time machine back-up) is 2TB. and right now Time machine back up failed. and keep saying that hard drive don;t have enough space....
i erase all from external hard drive ,, back up NEW. and still saying that not enough space on back up drive, weird thing is and i have 2.8 TB to back up.. but my entire hard drive is only 2TB .. what is that? and i only used 1.1 TB ish..
somebody help me? how can i use time machine back up with this issue?

What's shown for +Estimated size of full backup+ under the exclusions box in TM Preferences > Options?
If that's over the 1.1 TB used, there are a couple of possibilities:
Another internal or external drive, formatted for a Mac, is connected but not excluded, so Time Machine is trying to back it up, too. Exclude it, per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Something on your internal HD is corrupted, making Time Machine think it's much larger than it really is. Verify your internal HD, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time Machine back up never completes as estimate backup grows

Following a recent HD failure on my 2008 IMAC I have invested in a new 2014 Mac Mini (2.6 GHz Intel Core i5) with 8GB RAM and 1TB HD.
I have restored my IMAC data to my Mac Mini from an old WD External drive so the Mac Mini now holds 399GB data.
I have also purchased a 2TB Time Capsule.
The problem I have is when trying to perform the first full back-up of the Mac Mini to the Time Capsule using Time Machine the back-up never completes.
    Steps followed:
    - I click options within Time Machine where you have the chance to exclude back-ups, this shows estimated back-up size as 399GB agreeing with my HD view.
    - I start back-up and and as soon as it commences it reads backing up 0.00GB of 431.25GB (Not sure where the extra 31GB comes from)
    - I leave this to run and when the first figures gets to around 390GB of 431GB both figures start to increase. This never ends!
    - I have tried the Time Capsule via WIFI and cable and same issue occurs.
    - I have tried switching the Time Capsule for the old WD Hard Drive and again the same issue.
    - My sons Mac Mini back-ups fine using TM with either of these drives so it appears that there is something wrong with TM on my new iMac.
I have considered purchasing an alternative to TM but would rather use TM as it has worked fine for me over the years.

  • Time Machine Back Up Not Enough Space

I just tried to back up my Mac Book Air and I use OS X 10.7.3.
I got a message which said that there was not enough space on my external hard drive.   The message said that I needed 50 GB and the external drive only has 43 of space... Note, when I check out the hard drive, it says:  ""Available 43.63 of 249.93".
The sole purpose of my hard drive is for back up purposes.  So,  there isn't anything other data or information on the drive...
    So, what do I do?

To be clear--is this a drive you have been using with the MacBook Air previously with Time Machine?  Or is this the first time you've tried to use Time Machine with this drive on this computer?
If it's not the first time, I suspect you're just getting Time Machine's warning which everyone eventually will get (unless you've turned it off or really don't change many files) that it is going to need to delete something from the drive outside of its normal scheduled elimination of backups (normally it lengthens out the period between saved backups as the backup ages, figuring you don't need every hour's snapshot for the last three years).  By its nature Time Machine's needs tend to grow over time and it will eventually consume all available space on a drive that it is given access to.

Backup to Time Capsule will not complete.  This just started happening about a month ago.  It used to work fine.  I have tried deleting prior backups and reformatting the Time Capsule.

That's not really an error message; just a notice that TM doesn't know whether you migrated from another Mac or backups, or did a full system restore.

Rats.  Backupd crashed again, just as before. The "combo" didn't update whatever's damaged/corrupted.
Try installing a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else), also per Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.

  • My time machine backup does not complete

    The error message is
Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "<our server name>"
The backup disk image "Volumes/Backup/<MyComputerName mini.sparsebundle" is already in use.
Latest successful backup: January 17, 2014
    Please help.

On your Server (assuming it's OS X Server), turn off the Time Machine Service then turn it back on. This is what I have done in the past when this happens.

  • Time Machine basically will NOT complete a backup...

Since upgrade to Yosemite I am having issues getting Time Machine to complete a backup... I have see all most non-existent progress at times and a backup that used to be done in a couple hours now seems to likely take days... I have written other files to my USB backup disk with no issues...
I have seen other similar complaints but no clear fix... this was first reported last Oct-Nov but I have the latest OS installed and I don't see any answers...
Can anyone advise on status of this issue ??

I spoke too soon... after having this issue couple times and stopping the backup after seeing it stalled, today I watch it set stuck initially but just let it grind... whatever was wrong eventually cleared and it finished in four hours.... so maybe this post will at least give others reason to give it time...
I did eject the USB drive, restart, and cycle WIFI just to try and get something going... just not sure what that something was...

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Hi I'd like to jump in here. Your app showed me this:
    Time Machine:
              Skip System Files: NO
              Mobile backups: OFF
              Auto backup: YES
              Volumes being backed up:

Size of backup disk: Too small
                                  Backup size 999.86 GB < (Disk used 453.81 GB X 3)
Time Machine details may not be accurate.
All volumes being backed up may not be listed.
              /sbin excluded from backup!
              /usr excluded from backup!

              /bin excluded from backup!
              /private excluded from backup!
              /Library excluded from backup!
              /Applications excluded from backup!
Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?
    Thanks,
    Darcy

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

I am trying to get space on an external hard drive which has some old time machine back up files that I do not need but can not eliminate, even by going into the time machine, clicking on the backup file to be eliminated and using the drop down menu with the gear box symbol to eliminate

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.
