I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

Usually the caution symbol means that it's formatted as a PC compatible format like NTFS or most likely FAT32. For iMovie to use it the ehd must be formatted Mac OS Extended. Then iMovie will show it without the caution symbol and you can drag/drop open any Event/Project from that hard drive.
To find out if it's formatted as PC:
Go to the desktop, holding down the Control key click on that ehd and in the pop-menu choose 'Get Info'
Under Format: It will say whether or not it's Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The only way to undo a PC formatted ehd would be to copy everything off of it first, Erase/Format the drive using Disk Utility in the Applications>Utilities folder on your Mac, choosing the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format in the pull-down menu there. -

But I want all my iTunes information: artist, songs, albums, playlists on my new MacBook Pro. I know about going to iTunes preferences- advanced-itunes media folder location. At this point I don't know what to do Do I drag external icon into iTunes media folder location box. I want to keep music files on external hard drive. I don't want to use macbook pro memory for my very large music files.

HELP: Trying to get my music from external hard drive onto *new* computer
HELP US! Our motherboard died last month, BUT we had everything on an external hard drive (YEAH!) so we've been able to download iTunes on our new laptop, but now are having trouble getting all of my music from my iTunes library into my iPod Nano. Specifically, it will not let me put any of the music I previously purchased--other songs I got from CD's came over find. I can see ALL of my music in my iTunes account, but it won't let me sync them onto my device.
Any suggestions?Choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes, or play a purchased song on your computer.

Please help new (senior) convert to Mac Pro (OS X). Am following the 'switching to a Mac' portable genius 2nd ed, and as it advised, I bought an external hard drive (a Mac My Word) and partitioned it with one partition for a secondary boot device and another for time machine. Book implied I needed both. Seemed to download OK but now when i plug in the external hard-drive it wants to reboot me fresh all over again. How do I keep the time machine partition going but have the secondary boot device only in case of emergencies? Do I 'eject' that partition- and if so how do I do it from outside the hard drive (I am not game to reattach it currently)
Launch the System Preferences application (under the Apple menu) and select the Startup Disk preference pane. Set your internal drive as the startup disk. Close the window.

Trying to make space on Mac, external hard drive
I just installed a Western Digital My Book Studio 1tb external hard drive to use with my Mac. I am using it with Time Machine, not the software it came with.
My question is: If I delete files from the Mac, will it delete them from the external hard drive, too? I don't want to lose the files, I just need to make space ON the Mac hard drive by moving the files elsewhere. Thank you!First DO NOT use the WD software!!!! Also when you use an external HD for backup it should be dedicated to that use ONLY. NEVER EVER store additional data files on a backup drive. The reason being is HD's fail so if you use the same drive for backup and normal storage if/when that drive fails you will lose not only the oringinal but it's backup which makes backing up worthless!
A true backup system will have multiple backup strategies on independent media. Many folks (myself included) will use TM for backing up and then on another EHD create a bootable clone backup using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (both about $30), a bootable clone is useful because in the event of internal HD failure you can boot the machine from the clone and resume work! You CANNOT do that from TM. In the case of backup redundancy is a VERY VERY good thing because backups can and do fail too!
As for your data you want to store on an external HD, get a third EHD (EHD's are cheap so don't be penny wise and pound foolish) and store large libraries such as movies, photographs & music on an EHD. Apple explains how to move those libraries to EHD's in:

Hello, I've just bought a Mac compatible Passport Air external hard drive, which is supposed to be compatible with the OS I am using (Mountain Lion) but I keep getting an error message saying Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creting the backup folder. I've tried all the help suggestions, but nothing with this actual message comes up - it appears to be partititioned correctly etc, so don't know what I'm doing wrong - any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.
Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

I use Time Machine with an external hard disc which has worked perfectly for some years. Recently Time Machine has aborted backups if the screen saver starts when back-up is in progress. I use a Maxtor OneTouch4 back-up system. Any ideas?
Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine. I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake a back-up. I have now switched of all screen savers.Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk. If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

iPhoto just stopped working. It loads pictures, but then goes into rainbow wheel forever. Then I try to force quit it, and then the whole Mac hangs up (had to power cycle it to get it back). I am using OS 10.5.8, and when I run software update, it assures me I have up to date software. I have not added any photos since the last time I used it, probably less than a month ago. What gives?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -

I am trying to open space in my macbook hard drive, so I deleted files and after emptying the trash bin the amount of Gigs didn't increase, why? Where can I go and delete those files?
Did you do a secure empty trash? SHIFT COMMAND DELETE, they will be over wriiten. Are you deleting docs as they aren't much space, videos,pictures,music use much more space.
You can move those fiels to an external "archive" drive to save them then delete them from your internal drive. -
I am trying to burn CDs to an external hard drive to conserve space on our laptop. When I change the file location it says the destination folder on the external drive is invalid. Am I missing a step?
It does, but that's definitely strange. Try showing all hidden files and folders on your Mac to see if that helps.
To do this, head to Applications -> Utilties -> Terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE -> Press Enter
killall Finder -> Press Enter
Then navigate out to your iPod again via the Finder. Any luck now?

When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups. It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up. Instead, it took 30 minutes. That can't be right. I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that. Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?
The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Time Machine
Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.
