Time Machine can't backup. Even not on new Backup Drive.
Hi!
I tried what was suggested to me in October last year (and which heleped then) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4391097.
I also trashed the Time Machine settings and recreated them.
And now I also vhanged the backup drive. The result is always the same.
In the Console I see:
27.04.13 08:03:32 ReportCrash[548] ReportCrash Formulating crash report for process backupd[546]
27.04.13 08:03:32 com.apple.launchd[1] com.apple.launchd (com.apple.backupd[546]) Exited abnormally: Bus error

And the crash report gives me:

I am trying to update my time machine backup on time capsule, but time machine keeps trying to create an entirely new backup (evidenced by the 200GB backup size). How can I get time machine to modify my old backup rather than create a new one?
It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
He also has some info on this problem. eg C13. -
Time Machine can't access to WD Mybook WE backup
I'm getting a little bit foul with Time Machine and Wester Digital MyBook World Edition 1TB disk!
I’ve the TM working fine till I made some Mac OS update, it was here that the TM stop working!
In Finder I’ve 2 file servers mapped, MyBookBack and MyBookBack-Backup.
I can access to the folders and files at MyBookBack, but I can’t access to the MyBookBack-Backup, which is normal.
But now the TM don´t work! When I acess to Sistem Preferences > Time Machine, I’ve TM disabled and when I choose a disk the TM list the WD_Backup at MyBookBack-Backup, then I choose to use it to security copy, he asked for User and Password of the TM user at WD, and then… start thinking with the color wheel running indeterminably!!!! I Just left it by 48Hours connected and nothing happened! I have to force to quit the Sistem Preferences to stop it!
The same happens when I tried to reach to TM data using the Migration assistant and select MyBookBack-Backup
Can anyone help me? I haven’t any backups since almost 2 months ago!
Many thanks and have a Happy New Year free from BUGS!I have a similar issue with the 1Tb Mybook World Edition that it decides to go offline for an unknown reason.
I a running version 01.02.05 on the MyBook (latest version) and OSX 10.6.6 on my MacBook Air.
Following a series of test the issue seems to be with OSX 10.6.6.
The reason for this statement is the following:
- I have a Mac Mini G4 running 10.4.11 and it never looses the NAS. Never.
- If you reboot the Mac Air it will re-register the NAS and all works normally (Time Machine and File Sharing) until the next 'glitch'
- I installed 10.6.4 on the Mac Air and low an behold the issue with the NAS has disappeared.
- After running the Mac Air on 10.6.4 for 3 weeks I proceeded to update to 10.6.5. After 24hr the inaccessibility issue resurfaced.
My interpretation on the above is the some thing has been modified in the AFP following 10.6.5 which is 'incompatible' with MyBook NAS -
Time Machine says it needs to make a new backup.....
I have a Time Capsule. I did the initial backup via ethernet cable as instructed, then moved my iMac downstairs where it needs to be. The Time Capsule is upstairs functioning as my wireless network router and backup disk. I then connect the iMac via wireless to the Time Capsule backup disk upstairs and begin to do my subsequent backups wirelessly. All goes well for several weeks, then one day I get a message on my iMac that basically says that Time Machine has verified that it must do a new backup. Another full backup. OK, so I bring the iMac upstairs to do another backup via ethernet cable, then back downstairs to connect wirelessly. All goes well for another several weeks, then again it tells me I need to do another full backup.
What gives? What is the point of having a Time Capsule as a router and wireless backup disk if I have to keep connecting every few months to do an ethernet backup? It kind of defeats the whole purpose. I have another backup disk connected to the Time Capsule doing daily backups via SuperDuper and that goes on and on with never a problem. Why does the Time Capsule have so much trouble with wireless backups via Time Machine?
Am I doing something wrong?
Is this happening to anyone else? If this is the case, it was a real waste of money buying the Time Capsule. I should have bought an Airport Extreme and connected a hard drive.
Thanks for any ideas or comments you might have.
LenSee Pondini info about the issue.
C13 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
And yes, we find that wireless is much less robust than ethernet.
There is too much automatic stuff in the wireless of the TC.
Lock it down.. I recommend a full reset.
Give it all new names.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. That includes TC name, wireless name for 2.4ghz and different name for 5ghz.
Lock the wireless (called radio) channels. Especially for 2.4ghz .. try 11, 6, 1
Otherwise the TC can swap channels at any time.
Make sure you use WPA2 Personal security. Make sure you get good signal in your location.
Airport Extreme with disk is
1. Not authorised by Apple for use with TM.
2. Suffers the same problem.
See http://pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
TM is very exacting.. and very difficult.
SuperDuper will create a simple file structure that isn't dependent even on AFP.
As alternative to wireless you might find EOP adapters will work better for you.
Another alternative which I highly recommend for iMac, as a desktop is to simply plug in an external drive and use that.
It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than TC.. you can then do a backup from this drive to the TC occasionally by superduper as a further protection. -
Time Machine Keeps Thinking That it's a New Backup
We're running Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini, and are using an external FW drive for Time Machine backups of the server and shared data only, no client backups. Time Machine has not worked since we setup the Mac Mini, but was working well on the previous server using Leopard Server. Here are the troubleshooting steps I've taken, as well as the latest log.
Erased and re-setup the Time Machine drive using another drive name. I've encountered issues where Time Machine doesn't like to use the same drive name after a migration.
Repaired permissions
Trashed Time Machine preferences
Made sure that all updates are applied
Made sure date and time are correct on the server
Made sure that the backup hard drive was not damaged or corrupted
The error:
Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Graphics Backup/Backups.backupdb
Starting pre-backup thinning: 235.12 GB requested (including padding). 164.53 GB available
No expired backups exist - deleting oldest backups to make room
Error: backup disk is full - all 0 possible backups were removed, but space is still needed
Backup failed
Every time it fails, I wipe the drive and the preferences hoping that something will fall in to place on the next backup attempt. This happens every time after we complete an initial new backup where Time Machine doesn't recognize that there is an existing backup for the server on the external drive and that it only needs to create an incremental. It's extremely frustrating. We're not using any type of software that is using any crazy sql databases that would be flexing while backing up. Shoot, we have it set to backup at 5AM when no one is in the office nor connected remotely (which we don't allow nor have setup anyway). We are merely using the server for a share point for our digital assets (overkill, but not my idea). Indexing of the initial backup occurs in a reasonable time. Super frustrated at this point.Still having this issue. Now with TWO servers, two different clients. Nothing had changed prior to this error.

My Macbook Pro will be going in for reimaging and my hard drive will be wiped, I want to know if all my iTunes preferences will be copied if I have backed them up on Time Machine. Specifically, if I have set certain "Start Time" and "Stop Time" for my songs, and I copy my iTunes library, will these "Start Time" and "Stop Time" options remain or will I have to manually set them one by one once again? I need a reply ASAP! Thanks so much!
As far as I'm aware the start & stop times are stored in the library database, not the media files. If you backup/restore/transfer the whole library then the settings are included. If you create a complete copy of your iTunes folder on another drive you can connect to that copy by holding down option/alt as you start iTunes so you can check that everything is working properly before you send the Macbook away.

Can I do a backup using Time Machine on a server, or it needs an external drive only?
Time Machine can back up to a server. The drive or partition used still needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Time Machine and update to 10.5.3: The backup volume could not be mounted
I have the same problem reported by many others. Read all the posts, tried all the suggestions and nothing is working.
Western Digital 1Tb MyBook connected to an Airport Extreme. I can see the sparsebundle file created previously, open it and see the previous backups, and even Time Machine can see them. It just won't back up to the drive after the update from 10.5.2 to 10.53. No problem, however, having Time Machine backup to a FireWire WD MyBook connected to the iMac after updating to 10.5.3.
I hope Apple is keeping track of this issue. It was working really nice and I was impressed how easy it was to set up.Having same problem here, 17" 1.67Ghz Powerbook G4, after update to 10.5.3 I get "Backup could not be mounted" with Time Capsule(w/ user accounts).
Attempted, to no avail:
Deselecting Drive. Would not let me reselect. Able to after deleting keychain items.
Restarting with no drive selected, then reselecting.
Repaired system permissions.
Mounted Sparse image, and repaired image.
Choosing backup now
When the sparse image is mounted, i am able to enter it through time machine's view other backup disks, so i think the image is fine.
the console lists the following entries:
5/29/08 5/29 | 11:32:10 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[148] Backup requested by user
5/29/08 5/29 | 11:32:10 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[148] Starting standard backup

Iv'e tried everything ive seen recommended, does anyone have any ideas?

Time machine can not access time capsule after upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion
Two days ago I upgraded my 2009 17" MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. That evening my time capsule/time machine combination worked fine and did an incremental backup of about 12 gigabyte. Yesterday - only one day later - the time machine backup did not work anymore.
It appears that the system can not find the time capsule - even though it shows the remaining free space on the time capsule (so it did find it after all).
The message is always the same:
Time Machine can not complete the backup "Time Capsule"
The image of the backup volume "/Volumes/Data/Pauls MacBookPro.sparsebundle" is not accessable (Error -1).
I also can not delete the backup image on the time capsule since it is read-only. And I do not want to format the time caspsule yet since my wife's MBAir is also using the same time casule.
I tried out all kinds of suggestions (hard and soft resetting both the MBP and the TC, entering the password again, setting the TC up again) all to no avail. No backup is possible anymore.Mr. Zooot wrote:

Sounds like you got this message earlier:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Offhand, I don't recall anyone not being able to delete one via the Finder (but most were only backing-up one Mac, so just erased the disk).
You may have to wait for that message to appear again (24 hours later), or you might try holding Alt/Option with the TM icon in the menubar, and select Verify Backups if it will let you. -
Lion's Time Machine - Can't create a backup?
Time Machine can't make a backup... I even went ahead and wiped out the drive and tried to create a new backup.
All it says is that it couldn't complete the backup and to try later as it might only be temporary.
This is critical for me and a not at all light in importance. Had I known this along all the other issues with Lion existed I wouldn't have upgraded. For now I am keeping my MBP safe from Lion...
I guess I just have to suffer the damage on my 27" IMAC..
I would use a BR Disk to do a back up of my files, but NO.... MACs don't support Blu-Ray disk drives, STILL!!
Apple you need to fix this and other issues.Apple's ingenuity in their advances can be hailed by millions as I myself give them credit where credit is due, such as devices like the iPad and iPhone/iPod. But when a company only bothers to alert you to a couple of apps that Lion can't run and moves them to a folder for the user to delete or update but leaves devices and other industry standard software packages rendered useless with no warning when they have extensively tested their OS against 3rd party manufactured devices and software, whom they are partnered with, then yes they can share in the blame just as Microsoft takes the blame for operating systems that do the same such as VISTA.
I am sure that with enough time all of the 3rd party companies will undoubtedly get on board at some cost that will get pushed down to the end users. They will either update, upgrade or conform.
Apples mentality in the past hurt their stock prices, they used to only use their own Risc based processors and they refused to adapt and incorporate to the needs of their users desires for better faster chipsets and industry software such as Office. They adapted!
Refusing to incorporate the ability to use Blu-Ray technologies when companies such as Pioneer,LG, and Cyberlink are prepared to release the software for the Mac, Apple just has to give the go ahead, then yes, its their fault again. The industry in general isn't blind, they have a reason. Manufacturers want to create things that work with Apples Operating system and do, but they aren't allowed to release it without approval from Apple. They need Apple's support and acceptance for something like Blu-Ray to make it. Otherwise its just another hack and shunned by any cautious person that wants to make sure that their purchase won't cause them more problems than its worth. Blu-Ray is a matter of licensing and a major reason that Microsoft won't incorporate it into their own media player, but they leave it up to 3rd party software companies to absorb that cost and create their own players that can play back Blu-Ray movies within the Windows platform. Apple wants to keep Blu-Ray off of their machines as they can't obtain an exclusive license to the codec for Blu-Ray movies for Quicktime. The same mentality that they had before with their processors. So even the ability to read and write to the medium is out of the question. -
If time machine puts all of my photos onto my external hard drive using time machine, can I then delete the photos from my computer but view them again from the external hard drive? Basically, can I free up space on my mac but not lose years of photos?
To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site, -
Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more.
Hi all
Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more. I only can back up external disks. Does anyone know how to fix this?
All answers are much appreciatedI don't know the answer but I have the same thing happen. I have two external drives I use for backup. Sometimes it can see one and sometimes another. Then sometimes it can't see either one. I will take one out for a while then plug it back in and then it may see it. Maybe it's a cable issue or something but I will be curious to hear what someone more knowledgeable says.

My time machine back up failed because it says the backup volume could not be mounted. What does that mean and how do I fix it so that it backs up?
A whole lot about Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
Use Disk Utility to repair the TM drive. If that doesn't help, and you don't find help from the above, then erase the drive and start a new TM backup. -

Installed GoFlex 1.5 TB external drive on my iMac running OS X 10.7.4 and error says Time Machine can't create a backup folder. Any solutions?
Well, to unmount the drive, you can use the Terminal application.
Start in Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
When the Terminal window opens, type - without the quotes and with the space at the end - this:
"diskutil unmount "
Then drag the icon of the unmounted drive from the desktop into the Terminal window - the drive location will be added to the end of the command above. It should look something like this:
diskutil unmount /Volumes/volumename
Then press enter (return).
That should unmount the drive. Now you can try the Time Machine process again with perhaps a different interconnect cable for the GoFlex.
