Time Machine cause iMac to crash

Hello. I'm new to using Macs, but I purchased a new 24" iMac a couple of months ago. I had a few problems with it locking up due to some AVI files. I ended up pulling them off the computer totally. When I installed Leopard, I went from an occaisional freeze to non-stop freezes. I pinned it down to Time Machine. I totally reinstalled and re-formatted the computer back to when I bought it, didn't install anything extra other than Leopard. Once installed, again nothing but crashes. I'm using a Seagate 320G external. I just started the advice of turning Spotlight off for the external drive, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'd like to be able to use the features of Time Machine, but it's getting very frustrating.
Does anyone have any other insight and am I missing something?

Well, I went through the process, repaired the disk and started TM. Worked fine on recovering a mail from months ago. I quit TM and opened a finder window. The bar on the right was dimmed, the stars started to crawl and nothing happened. Everything was there, but did not react to mouse clicks. So I force quit TM and got a blank screen -- no Finder, not nothing. So I did the forced restart again.
Now, Spotlight started re-indexing the volume which will take about 7 hours for 220 GB (which in itself sounds very strange to me).

Now I have version 10.8.5, but if I try to download again it states that I need version 10.7. Now How do I get 10.7, and dowload Mavericks?? Help

You shouldn't need 10.7. Something is messed up with the App Store.
3 things you can try.
1. - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
- Quit the App Store
- In Finder - Go>Go to folder... (or Apple-shift-G)
- Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
- It will take you to a folder. Delete com.apple.appstore
- Launch the App Store.
2. Try resetting the App Store.

You can also try creating another admin user and see if you can download it there.

Time machine causes error message " Disk not properly ejected" with USB backup drive

I am using iMac OS X Lion and Time Machine causes the error message with a WD 1.5 TB drive in aThermaltake dock, USB. every time I wake up the computer.... Ejection of Time Machine and shut it down and turn opp power to drive causes the error message problem to disappear. What is the solutin?

If it were mine I would replace the drive with another brand. WD drives EHD's tend to have more issues than any other EHD. If you want to continue using it you can try resetting the SMC (may take 2-3 tries) and/or restarting in Safe Mode to reset some caches, it's possible one or more has become corrupt.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Time machine great but programs crash

Hello all,
Just wanted to say how relieved I was to have upgraded and been using Time Machine. Hard drive crashed, got new one, recovered from TM and everything came back exactly as it was.
However.
I can't say for sure this has anything to do with TM, but every other program I had installed previously was up and running exactly as it was before except for iWeb, iMovie HD, iDVD and Photo Booth.
None of those programs will open now. Coincidence? I don't know.
When I got the machine back, I got all software updates and repaired permissions. In Photo Booth, the first program I noticed the problem in, I removed the preference file and restarted and still nothing. And before someone tells me to zap the PRAM, can you tell me if i will lose preferences in all my programs?
What do I do, aside from putting my machine back in for service and losing more work due to lost time?

Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion 3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have 3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

Time Machine Causes Lion to Completely Crash

To set the scene I have been working with Macs from System 7 onwards, I recently upgraded my i5 Macbook pro 13" to Lion.
I decided the other day to start using Time Machine. I have set it up before for other people and usually found it to be very straightforward. I previously just used to back up my data raw by doing flat file copies or DMGs when I felt like it.
I have a 500GB Toshiba USB 3 drive. Using Disk Utility I have erased the Dos partition and created a new GUID single partition, OSX Journaled.
Time machine sees the disk perfectly well and I allocate it to do the backups. They start as they are supposed to and begin to run.when they get to a certain point (which seems to be different each time) the machine locks up completely. The screen is frozen and the only way to continue is to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power key.
Since beginning to write this post I have also remembered I have had this before since upgrading when i was tryign to restore my iPhone.
Apart from that the computer is fine, no lockups or crashes. I used to get amazing uptimes from this one, 30 days etc so its quite dissapointing to be faced with this unreliability.
I have seen a few other posts suggesting a complete re-installaiton of OSX but this seems rather heavy handed for an application error. The rest of the OS is fine as far as I can tell (Except for these gestures driving me potty).
Any help with this woudl be great as it woudl be good to get more under the bonnet with Lion and see what makes it tick...or stop ticking as the case may be.

OK Here goes, I can make it crash on demand by starting Time Machine with the disk connected. Just to be belt and braces I initialised the disk again and created a new partition. It crashed and so here is the data you requested. I hope there is no personal info in here but the name of the computer is not too personal

Nothing present, I dont think the system has time to write a report because it has become completely bogged by this problem.
If you can shed any light on this I'd be really grateful. The thing I spotted right before the crash is the following line

Problems with Time machine caused by removing PKCS11.log?

I haven't yet found a solution to my Time Machine no longer backing up: "while an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk"
I requested help before, but so far nobody could help me solve this problem!
I noticed that I removed, in a file clean up, a log file: PKCS11.log."
I still have this file in the Trash but can not restore this file from Trash to its original location because I don't know its original location. The command" restore", or "put back" does not figure in the menu of Trash.
It can be that the removal of this log file causes the back up problem in Time Machine?
As you will notice from the above, I know very little about software and subjects like this and hope that somebody can help me to get Time Machine backing up again.

Time machine backup after HD crashed

Hi, my HD on my MacBook crashed and i had it replaced which is fine, the OS (10.5) was reloaded as well. My question is what is the best way to restore from Time Machine to my previous system.
Before the HD crashed certain programs (word, safari and handbrake mainly) were causing major spikes in Processes and causing the fans to spin at over 6000rpm. I was concerened that this may be caused by corrupt system files, preference files or caches. I ask because if corrupt files were the problem, will restoring from Time Machine re install these corrupt files and again cause problems?
What would be the best way to restore from Time Machine in this case?
Any help would be great!

Just to clarify do you mean to archive and install from the Time Machine drive? That is where i am confused because the OS was erased an installed the apple store so its all new now?
Ahhh, you never explained that clearly earlier. All this time I thought you hadn't done anything yet to the system. So you already have the Mac OS re-installed, you just don't have your user data yet?
Then in that case forget the Archive & Install. You need to now use Migration Assistant to move your User data over form the Time Machine backup. Have you already launch the Mac OS and created an new account, or have you NOT started the Mac yet? It makes a difference what you do below.
*Using Time Machine Before Initial Launch of New Mac*
Before starting the new Mac for the first time, attach the hard disk that contains the Time Machine backups from the old Mac. (For Time Capsule/AirDisk users: If you will be attempting this wirelessly, ensure that you are in range of your Airport wireless device. Alternatively, for faster migration of large quantities of data, connect your Mac via ethernet to your wireless device.)
Procedure:
Startup the new Mac and begin the setup process. You will initially see the video introduction.
At “Welcome” select your country and then preferred keyboard.
At “Do You Already Own a Mac?” you are asked “Would you like to transfer your information?”
+from another Mac+
+from another volume on this Mac+
+from a Time Machine backup+
+Do not transfer my information now+
Select “from a Time Machine backup” and click “Continue”.
At “Select a Backup Volume” choose your Time Machine backup disk and click “Continue”. (If you are attempting the migration wirelessly, then click “Join...” and select your network first.)
At “Transfer Your Information” check all the categories you wish to migrate over. If you wish your Mac to be in the same state as your last backup, then check everything. If, however, you are only interested in transferring one user account, then click the little disclosure triangle next to "Users". A list of all the previous users will appear. Just uncheck the user accounts you do NOT wish to migrate over. In other words, have only the desired account checked.
Give the installer time to calculate sizes.
Once that is complete, the “Transfer” button will become active and you can click it.
After the migration, verify the registration information, click “Connect” and you are done.
Once the migration is complete use Disk Utility to repair any permissions issues.
*Using Time Machine After Initial Launch of New Mac*
If you happened to initially set up the new Mac using a different username than the username on the account you wish to migrate, then skip to “Attach the hard disk containing...”.
If, on the other hand, it is the same username as the account you wish to migrate over, then do the following:
Go to System Preferences --> Accounts.
You may need to unlock the lock in the lower left to make changes.
Below the pane on the left click "+" and create a brand new Administrator User account on the Mac with a completely unique name - not the name of your own User account.
Now logout of the account you are currently in and log back in using the new Admin account you just created.
Attach the hard disk containing the previous Macs' Time Machine backups to the new computer. (For Time Capsule/AirDisk users migration will be much faster if you connect your Mac directly to the router via ethernet. [See “Wirelessly or Directly Connected” above])
Now go to Applications --> Utilities --> and launch Migration Assistant.
At the welcome dialogue click "Continue." You may be required to enter your Admin password.
For Migration Method chose "From a Time Machine backup or other disk". (Do not choose…
"Full System Restore" unless it is exactly the same Mac you are restoring to.)
At “Select the System to Transfer” choose the hard disk containing the previous Time Machine backups and click “Continue”. Give Migration Assistant some time as it connects to the drive and scans the disk for eligible data to migrate.
At “Select User Accounts to Transfer” put a check beside each account you would like migrate over to the new Mac.
At “Select the Items to Transfer” you can choose to migrate “Applications” over. If an application already resides on your new Mac, only the newest version will be transferred. Additionally, other “Files and Folders” that resided at the top level of your old Mac can be transferred at this point as well. Files from the “Library” folder of your old Mac will always be transferred over unless you uncheck the other two options.
Click “Continue”.
At “Select Computer Settings to Transfer” choose which settings you would prefer transferring to the new Mac. If you want a completely fresh system to start with, then do not check any of these options. This can be helpful if your previous system was experiencing issues.
Click “Transfer”.
If you have already created a User Account on the new Mac and it happens to be named the same as the User Account that is being migrated then Migration Assistant will report,
+"There is an existing user account with the same name as an account you are transferring."+
At that point, you will be able to choose one of the following:
+• Rename the user account you are transferring+
+• Replace the existing user account with the one you're transferring+
+• Do not transfer this user account+
If you wish the new Mac environment to be exactly the same as your old Mac, then avoid selecting “Rename the user account...”. Rather, select “Replace the existing user account...”. It will not be deleted but saved in a new folder labeled “Deleted Users” found in the main Users folder. Click “Next”.
At this point the transfer will begin with a bar displaying the progress. Once completed click “Quit”.
*Full Backup After Migration to New Mac*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will not continue to backup the previous Macs’ backup sets but will perform a new full backup. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select the previous Mac’s backup set. Time Machine causing Kernel Panics

Hello,
A few days ago, I started to have kernel panics with Time Machine. This seems to have started since I upgraded to OS X 10.10.2.
I can reliably reproduce the issue by doing the following:
Turn Time Machine "ON" in the system control panel and then force a backup.
Time Machine starts, says that it is preparing the backup, at some point the screen freezes and I get the grey screen of multilingual kernel panics.
I removed all kext extensions from the system, rebooted: no effect. I also re-install MacOS X (through the recovery volume) same thing. This also occurs in Safe Mode.
Any help would be appreciated

Restored from Time Machine backup-Apps hang/crash

I do apologize as I saw there is a similar thread to my problem but I wanted to post mine as it is a little different:
I am still troubleshooting this but I would appreciate any suggestions as well. Last night, my 24" C2D imac became unresponsive and had to had a force shut down. When I rebooted, I got the white apple screen for approx 10 mins.
I then booted from the Snow Leopard CD and did a complete restore from my Time machine Backup. The computer did come back but when I tried to open most programs (Safari, Mail, Itunes, iPhoto) they all unexpectedly crashed. When I looked at the crash log it mentioned something about a java webkit being missing?
Finally I got firefox to open. But the computer would hang every 10 seconds and have a spinning beach ball. It would hang for 10-30 seconds then it would just continue that cycle.
I restarted from the CD again, ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions. I tried running from my hard drive and still had the freezing/hanging issue. I then restored my HD from another TM backup (different time). But still had the same issue
I downloaded the combo update 10.6.2 on another machine, tried reinstalling that to no avail.
I currently am restoring yet ANOTHER TM backup from yesterday morning (since I know that was a good boot).
I dont think it is a hard drive issue because I do have a bootcamp partition, and can boot into that with no problems/issues.
I wanted to ask if there were any ideas of what this could be or anything else I could try? I was thinking about redownloading the java updater and seeing if that helped...
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. My other question is if I do a clean install of SL, how do I then migrate information over (mail, pictures, music, etc.) from my TM backups?

if the restore you are doing now produces the same behavior just reinstall SL on top of it. your TM backups could be corrupt and missing some vital system parts. there have been a number of similar reports by people doing a full system restore from TM in snow leopard. so if the next restore doesn't work boot from the SL dvd and reinstall SL. it will keep your current data but give you a fresh system.

Time Machine causing meltdown

Hi,
When time machine is running on my macbook pro the fans go a maximum speed and also the temperatures go above 100 degrees. Previously this has caused the macbook to shut itself down.
Surely this cannot be normal.
Why would this software be allowed to run so that it crashes leopard?

One possibility that you may find when following Barry's suggestion, is the mds process, or perhaps a related one, such as mdworker.
If so, that's probably Spotlight trying to index the data that TM just put on your disk. Sometimes the two conflict, causing very slow backups, or in some cases, TM just hangs.
Try excluding the drive from TM indexing, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
Also exclude it from any anti-virus scanning.

Firewire issue--Backup drive not found w/Time Machine after imac sleeps

I've had a lot of problems with Time Machine on my G4 imac since starting to use it a month ago. I think I have isolated the problem:
Time Machine functions properly while the computer is in use, and it has no problem after a restart or shut down, but if the computer goes to sleep and then TM runs its hourly backup, I get an error that it cannot find the Backup Drive. Once this happens, TM will no longer work until I've deselected the drive in TM, unplugged it, plugged it in again, and reselected the drive as the backup Drive. Sometimes this requires a shut down or restart too.
Here's what I've tried:
1. connected the drive via USB--it operated without a problem
2. unplugged all devices from the computer, shut down, waited, 20 mins, restrted, plugged the external drive back in via Firewire--the problem persists as described above.
3. deleted the TimeMachine.plist file, restarted--problem persists.
I've read that the Firewire port can be reset with other procedures such as zapping the PRAM or updating the firmware. I've also read that new problems can arise after reseting the PRAM so I'm hesitant to do this. Can anyone shed some light on the PRAM option?
I cannot find where the firmware updates are located on the mac site. Could someone point me in the right direction? I've looked under downloads and after searching, came up with a long list, but nothing was labeled clearly. Each listing mentioned firmware in the header, but it seemed to always pertain to a certain issue (eg. superdrive, or installing appleworks). I could not tell what was the most recent firmware released for my machine, and I fear installing something retrograde that will create new problems.
If anyone has any thoughts on how to deal with the firewire problem, or if you think my issue with using a FW connected drive with Time Machine might be rooted with something else, please comment.

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast). Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27. If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.
