Time Machine Eats All Available Space
I have a new iMac 20 inch, using a WD "My Book" 1 TB drive. Setting up time machine, it uses all the drive space until error for "out of space". I have 300G of space used on the iMac hard drive, and it seems to do the math correctly on how much to back up and how long that will take. But, after the little bar fills up for the back up it keeps going, counting up the space on the external drive while saying 5 seconds left, and eventually it fills up the drive backing up 300G and writing it out as 980 G.
Any ideas on what causes this behavior? I've removed all the files from the WD external, and used disk utility to make sure there's no structure problems on the external drive. Support pages have no information on this - I've gone through the troubleshooting pages already.
(By the way, the new support community seems to encourage cryptic new discussion titles, since the new discussion box seems to be the search box).
This does not seem to be going as expected. I was expecting some diagnostic information, but only the start messages are found:

I think the problem might be related to how migration assistant copied over programs from my older computer (an iMac G5), which contained a Western Digital utility of some kind that seems to be crashing, if I'm interpreting this right. Maybe there was some software upgrade I should have done? But, the drive mounts and I've been able to read and write to it:

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space? There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups. I use a synology DS212 for my time machine. Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014. As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012. Not sure what that is.
This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

If time machine puts all of my photos onto my external hard drive using time machine, can I then delete the photos from my computer but view them again from the external hard drive? Basically, can I free up space on my mac but not lose years of photos?
To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site, -
Time Machine: "Delete All Backups of..." does not free up drive space
When I select "Delete All Backups of..." in the Time Machine Finder window, fiiles get deleted, but no disk space appears to be freed up.
For example...
Today I deleted all backups of more than 100GB of Movies and TV Recording I no longer want in the archive [the same movies have already been deleted from my Macmini].
But Time Machine hard drive spare space has not increased at all.
Why...Hi Robert J McInnes!
Try using the following information to attempt to delete your backup filed another way:
OS X Mountain Lion: Remove a backed-up item from your backup disk
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11241
Without entering Time Machine’s starfield, you can move, copy, or delete the Backups.backupdb folder on your Time Machine backup disk as you would other folders. You can also delete folders within the Backups.backupdb folder. You can’t delete individual items inside the dated folders.
Important: Do not use Terminal or any application other than Finder to move, copy, or remove items from the Backups.backupdb folder.
Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!

What items do you delete from backup on time machine to make more space available
What items do you delete from back up on time machine to make more space?
There's no need to do that unless Time Machine has reported a Disk Full alert. In this case you can:
1. Delete older entries using the Time Machine application to free up sufficient space.
2. Get a new and larger Time Machine backup drive to replace the old one.
3. Erase the backup drive and start over. -
Ever since I updated what looked like iTunes 10.6.1 my computer has been corrupted with Malware, which has filled up all available space on my hard drive. What do I do to get rid of the Malware?
First, reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal. -
I was trying to use my external hard drive to back up my mac computer. It had files on it from my pc computer. Time machine erased all my existing files. (I thought it was only going to erase the duplicate files and rewrite them). Is there anyway to recover these files from my external hard drive. My mac has renamed the hard drive time maching and it will no longer show up on my pc. What can I do?
Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think? -
Does backing up my hard drive to time machine gain me more space/speed on my iMac?
I have an iMac. here are the specs:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.30f1
Serial Number (system): QP921090ZE4
Hardware UUID: 20AE2D9A-DB71-54DF-95F7-DAEFEE167723
I have a TON of art/photos on this computer. I'm wondering if backing my hard drive up with time machine gains me more space and processing speed-or if it only slows my computer down? is it better to house my files on a seperate drive from the drive i am using for backing up with time machine?Just to add a little, Time Machine is not a storage drive. Backups on there are not in a form you can use as you would from your normal internal. If you delete your pics etc. after backup, they won't be backed up on subsequent runs, and will eventually be lost when the TM drive gets near full and starts deleting the oldest backups. Have a read of Pondini's TM articles; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
To do what you want, you need another drive to which you can simply copy your pics etc and open from there while booted to your internal. (this is a basic storage drive)
The storage drive can then also be backed up to TM (provided the TM disc is big enough). -
Time Machine will not let me restore from backups after June, 2013. I can see the files on the external hard drive but Time Machine skips all of them and goes back to June, 2013. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

telling me to buy a new router is NOT a solution.
And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle? -
How can I make app use all available space in window?
Hi,
I'm trying to embed my flash app in a browser window and have
it use all available space. I've found plenty of tutorials online
that tell me how to make it take up the whole window, and they
work, but that isn't what I want. I have other content on the page
(a bar of links across the top). I thus want the flash app to take
up the full width and almost all the hight, leaving enough vertical
space for the link bar at the top. Right now, I have it set to 100%
for both height and width in the object tag, and it displays the
link bar, but the bottom of the flash gets chopped off (an amount
exactly equal to the height of the link bar). It seems that setting
height=100% means 100% of the full window height, not the unused
height. Is there any way to make it do what I want?I believe the 100% will be relative to the parent container
of the Object/Embed tag.
If the Flex app is in say, a DIV that is correctly sized,
then 100% will fill the DIV. So I think you will need to get your
div sizing dynamically. A CSS expression maybe?

Time Machine Combines all Backups?
Hey,
Why did my time machine combine all my old backups? I can no longer go past my last backup. It's like it merged them all into the most recent. This is the second time it has done this. Does anyone know why or how to stop it from doing it?
I already checked out this page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306928
and I have an apostrophe in my name but it hasn't ever been a problem. It's like when I reach a certain number of backups it consolidates them into one and starts over?
Message was edited by: amsgatorThis is normal time machine behavior. After 24 hours, the backups collapse into 1 day. After 37 days or so, the first seven days collapse into 1 week. At some point you will have the last 24 hours, the last 30 days and weekly backups going back in time until your disk is full. If you think about it, it is very unlikely you will need a file from a certain hour 1 week or 30 days ago. It makes sense to collapse the backups into snapshots as time goes on. The more recent backups are more important. I hope I understood your question...

HT3275 My Time Machine deletes ALL previous backups
Every so often, Time Machine deletes ALL previous backups and starts over from scratch. It has done this several times in the last year. I have not changed any hardware or the name of the computer. Why is this happening? Makes me very concerned that I now have NO backups while it chugs away rebuilding a 210 GB backup.
Just got an error message:
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup. Time machine could not delete the backup disk image "/Volumes/Joe's iMac.purgeable"

Have you Repaired both drives first, then Repaired Permissions on both?
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imagine something not being covered there. -
Time Machine Has All My Music, Do I Need My CDs Anymore?
Silly question, perhaps. Time Machine has ALL my music from my CDs and that music which I have downloaded. Now, I only use my iTunes for listening to music - my CDs are all packed away. So, do I really need my CDs anymore or can I sell them, give them away? If you house catches fire, the CDs are gone anyway and I'm grabbing the Time Capsule . . .
~ AnnaHi, and welcome to the forums.
Unless you also have at least one set of backups off-site, keep them (in your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, or other secure place).
I hate to even suggest the possibility, but just the other day someone posted where his Mac and external HD containing his backups were stolen.
You can also lose both your originals and backups in cases of fire, flood, or direct lightning strike on your power lines.
See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some suggestions. -
Time machine only copies User Info and Users (Applications, Library, and System are missing) from my quad core Mac Pro. 45 Gb of 162 Gb are missing. Any one having success with time machine copying all folders using Mavericks?
What do I need to do differently? The late, great Pondini was investigating that issue before he passed away.
See here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5125969
I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over. -
Shpuld I leave time machine on all the time?
I have time machine on all the time. My concern is backing up every hour seems excessive, and I wonder if turning it off and only on once a week is better.
Furthermore, my LaCie external hard drive is annoyingly noisy. You can do that or you can use a third-party utility to change the schedule. If you use your computer daily, then file change daily, and you may wish to have those changes backed up.
