Time Machine Error - Back up Directory

I have searched the forum but didn't see anything specific on this. I have recently purchased the Time Capsule to go along with Time Machine and am having problems backing up after the first back up. Was able to complete the first back up but subsequent backups gives me an error "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. Can not create back up directory."
Has anyone seen this and if so, have they determined a fix? I have unmounted and mounted drive. I looked for any .com.apple preferences that are related to Time Machine and found none. Might be the problem but I can't find solution.
Thanks in advance.

This is fairly unusual. Here's other threads with what seems to be similar scenarios: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8761039&#8761039
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8508064&#8508064
As you'll see, the first one was a failing disk drive; the second never had a resolution posted (people often don't tell us what fixed their problems). So I'd be inclined to suspect your drive, since you've tried both USB and FW, pretty much ruling out cables, ports, loose connections, etc.
How long did you use this disk before the problems started?
Did you erase and format it, or use it as it came?
Do you have any of the "heavy-duty" disk repair apps, like DiskWarrior? I'm not really familiar with them, but some are far more rigorous than DU.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I've never seen that message. Assuming it's a translation, it sounds a bit like #C9, C10, or C11 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Or could it be: +Failed to mount disk image /Volumes/TMbackups/<name>.sparsebundle+ ? If so, if it's already mounted, try dismounting it; if not, see if you can mount it manually.
If not, try http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275 or: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2048 (both available in several languages).

I back up to wirelessly to a Time Capsule. I get these errors often. I'll go for a few days with everything working and then encounter these errors. I've even completely erased the Time Capsule drive and started over. It'll work fine for a few days and then start the errors over again. Interestingly, when the errors occur, the Time Capsule drive can not be unmounted even if clicking the eject button. I am on 10.5.8 but it happened in 10.5.7 as well. I have another Mac that doesn't seem to have any issues with the same Time Capsule.

It may or may not be right.
I'd be inclined to start over, per #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, go on to #C10, etc., in the Troubleshooting Tip, as in the previous post.

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

Hello Drake, I suspect one or more of the Drives needs repairing, but...
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Time Machine error- backup directory

Yet another person with the same error: Time Machine backup has been working just fine for about 2 months to a Time Capsule. Suddenly, all I get is "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory." No matter what I do, I get the same thing. I've done many of the things listed in other postings:
    - turning time machine and laptop on and off (repeatedly!)
    - clicking on the Change disk and re-choosing my Time Machine/capsule
    - reinstalling the latest 10.5.3 update.
I don't know what else to do- I'd really rather not go nuclear and reinstall the whole dang computer. Help! Any other ideas (not cryptic, please, explain, for me and everyone else out there with this problem)?
    Thanks

First make sure that the disk is still good. Use Disk Utility on it. Since I don't have a TC I'm not sure of the exact procedure. You may be able to do it over Ethernet.
If the top level directory checks out, then mount the sparseimage (fire up TM from the dock and then cancel out) and then use Disk Utility to Verify the disk image.

  • Time machine error.  Won't back up at all.

    Hello,
My time machine has always worked really well until recently. Now, whenever it starts to back up and finishes preparing, not a single file will transfer. Then, my Time Machine won't stop trying to back up. Even when I click "Stop Backing Up" or turn Time Machine off, it will still try to back up until I actually eject the Hard Drive. Then I get
    "Time Machine
Error Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
    What is going on?
    Thanks,

I'm having same problem. Neat Dashboard app. My log is pasted below. So I see the common error is on "Media1" drive, and the file "The New Interwoven". It's an old file and I can delete it. But before I do that, any recommendations on how to save the file and somehow "repair" it?

  • TS1550 My time capsule will not back up. There is a time machine error message that states "The backup disk image "/volumes/Backup/Jane's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use. How do I correct this problem?

My time machine will not back up. I get a Time Machine Error message that reads: "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Backup/(myname)'sMacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.
I have not been able to back up for two weeks, I think this occurred after an update to the operating system, but I am unsure.
How do I correct this problem?

Have you tried restarting the computer? Also, see Time Machine Error from this pages sidebar under More Like This.

  • Time machine error when backing up iMac with internal flash and sata internal drives.

will appear to be backing up and then as just about done, shows Time Machine Error message and ask you to
try again later, if problem persists, repair backup disk with disc utility.  Neither solution works.

Bump for a monday, and hopeful for some replies.

  • Time Machine Error, Backup to large - 496 avail and only 79 needs backed up

I have a 1 TB TM with 496.9 GB available (I already have 1 computer backed up on TM)
The second computer I want to back up has 80 GB used of a 500 GB HD.
Time Machine prefs show 496.9 GB available on TM and shows the back up will be 79.1 GB total.
But I get a error each time I try to back up saying " Time Machine Error, This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 614.1 GB but only 496.9 are available."
    Two questions:
How can 496.9 GB be to small for a 79.1 GB backup?
Why does a 79.1 GB backup require 614.1 GB of space?
    Thank You
    Doug

  • I'm having trouble backing up my second macbook to a new time capsule.   continue to get an error message -- "Time  Machine Error.  The backup disk image could not be created."   Is there something I need to change in my time capsule or time machine?

I just set up a new time capsule.  it worked fine on my first macbook.  But now I cannot backup my second macbook.   Getting "Time Machine Error"  "The backup disk image could not be created."  Do I need to change settings on my time capsule to allow the second computer, or do I need to change something on the computer to allow time machine to work right?
