Time machine missing the 'Latest' Symlink

Hey Gang,
I have a friend that had a failed Hard drive and when she tried to recover from time machine, it did not recognize as a TM backup at all.
After looking into it, the 'Latest' shortcut is missing in the backup on the time capsule.
I looked on mine and it is only a SymLink to point to the most recent backup set.
Does anyone know a simple way to add a 'Latest' folder back into the backup set so it will be recognized as a full TM backup and allow us to restore?
Currently i'm using disk utility to restore the data (600GB) to another drive to see if i can then add the SymLink and then repackage it and put it back on the Time capsule. I figured while i wait for that, i would see if anyone has a better options. I couldn't find anything in the tmutil that would be useful.
tmutil restore didn't see any backups to restore from.

If you want to restore the entire computer using a backup other than the most recent you'll need to use your computer's restore DVD (the grey one) or your commercial Leapard DVD to boot the computer. Then look under the utilities menu for Restore. Both Migrate and Setup Assistant automatically select the most recent TimeMachine backup.
Pondini's Time Machine site has everything you've always needed to know about TimeMachine but didn't know you should ask. You might want to take a look before you proceed.

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.

  • HT3275 Why does my Time Machine say No Latest Backup even though I ran a backup?

I have backed up my MacBook Pro several times to an external drive by following all the directions. But, the Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None" Latest Backup: None, Next Backup: Today 11:19 AM. I have selected the drive and turned it on. Has it backed up? Shouldn't it say there was a latest backup?

Enter Time Machine, via the application, to see if it has backed up. If not try C2/A4 in the first linked article.

Following a recent query from someone who had inadvertently deleted his calendars, a bit of experimenting has shown that it is possible to restore them from Time Machine. The method is described here:

Where are your backups? If they're on a USB drive, or a Time Capsule, you should be able to use +Setup Assistant+ on first boot. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum).

  • Time Machine "on the cheap."

I'm using the secondary drive in a PowerMac 2.0 (10.5.4 Server) as a 'Time Capsule.' To maximize throughput, I'd like to back up via Ethernet (GigE vs. 802.11g).
I've configured correctly; I can 'see' the designated drive, mount it and even begin a backup. On the server, I can see the .sparsebundle file created and increasing in size until failure... the size immediate reduces to roughly 8MB and Time Machine generates the following error:
    Time Machine Error
The backup disk image could not be created.
What am I missing/messing up here?
    thanks!
    Phoop out.

Probably a silly question, but what format is the Hard Drive on the server (the one that is being backed up to?)

  • Time Machine "missing" 2nd HD

I have a new mac mini server - which has 2 1TB drives.
Time machine is dutifully backing up the first drive (the system drive),
but when I go into Time Machine to check on the backup of the 2nd
    drive - it's not there.
I checked the Time Machine Preferences - the 2nd drive is not being
    excluded.
The backups are being written to an external 3TB firewire drive.
One thing I have done differently is to adjust the mount point of
the 2nd drive; I wanted it mounted on /local to become an NFS
server for our office, so I have this set-up in /etc/fstab:
    /dev/disk1s2 "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2" hfs noauto
    /dev/disk1s2 /local hfs auto
When I enter Time Machine; the finder shows "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2"
but there are no back-ups associated with it.
The finder does *not* show anything for /local (neither does the normal
    finder.)
Is there a way to get Time Machine to specifically "include" (instead of "exclude")
as it seems to have just gone missing...  I've stumbled around on the
various Time Machine web sites without any good answer...
      - Thanks -

I visited the Pondini faq at:
      http://pondini.org/TM/32.html
(topic #32 appears to be the one pertinent here.)
It indicates that I can view back-ups from the second volume by
simply clicking that volume while in Time Machine.
So - I enter Time Machine, the volume is currently connected,
I click on it in the Time Machine finder window... and all it
will give me is a "now" view.  There are no "past" views
for any data from the 2nd volume.
How can I be sure Time Machine is actually backing up my 2nd volume?
How can I restore data from that backup?

  • Does Time Machine backup the Applications folder?

Hi everyone. I'm backing up my MBP with Time Machine with the intention of formatting and reinstalling ML. It's completed it's first backup, however the backup is 133GB and in Disk Utility it says I've used 220GB on my hard drive? What's happened to that 87GB? I've noticed also that on the Time Machine disk, the Applications folder is nowhere to be seen.... Has it backed up my applications? Why has it missed out 87GB of stuff? Thanks

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply.
Yes I've checked all that, applications is not in the exclude list, and the "used" value in disk utility is vastly different...
If you look at the number of files/folders on the Time Machine, it's almost half....

  • I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. suggestions to complete backup please?

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • How do I retrieve iphoto library from Time Machine when the Mac doesn't have enough memory

Is there a way to retrieve (or view) specific photos from iphoto library when it resides in Time Machine? The iphoto library file is much bigger than the free space available on the Mac; erasing unneeded files may not free up enough space if the library must be restored as one entire transfer. It would be easier if I could restore only pieces of it. Is there a way to do this?

Not from Time Machine which is backing up only a file, not its individual contents. Either you restore iPhoto Library or not.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
      5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Can both an intel and a PPC mac use time machine on the same TC?

I just got a TC and have successfully used time machine with a MBP. I was about to install Leopard on my PPC eMac in order to use time machine on the TC but I wondered if they could both use the TC hard drive as it is currently formatted.
As I recall, intel macs use journaled GUID and PPC machines use another format.
    Am I deluded?

I don't think there is a problem, and I believe others have reported in these forums that they're doing it.
There is a lot of confusion in this area compounded by a number of people who say that some of the Apple KB articles are wrong/misleading.
But in this case it's more a case of it doesn't matter - here is why.....
The Time Capsule disk comes formatted, you can erase the disk via the Airport Utility. That's the closest you can come to formatting and you don't have options - so it does whatever it needs to do to get it right.
The machines being backed up don't access the Time Capsule's disk(s) directly as they do on a locally attached disk. They do it via AFP network disk protocol and the Time Capsule disk is in effect insulated from the machine being backed up.
(As an aside, it's because of this - the differences in what can be done over AFP - that the Time Capsule stores the backups in a different file format)
If you add a USB attached drive to the Time Capsule you can also erase it with the Airport Utility as above. In my case, I've attached a USB drive to my Time Capsule. I never had the Time Capsule erase it, but before attaching it I attached it locally and formatted it GUID and HFSJ and it work just fine when attached to the Time Capsule. Does it have to be formatted that way - I don't know - all I know is in this one case what I did works which doesn't prove it has to be that way.

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.
