Time Machine Setup Questions

Hey all, I am looking to upgrade my Time Machine setup and was looking for some tips.  Here's my current setup:
I had two (now three - see below) external drives: a 320GB WD drive that currently houses all of my family's iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie data as well as a few extraneous videos.  We also have a second 1TB WD drive that currently has time machine backups from the iMac on it.  Time Machine is also set up to back up the 320GB WD to the 1TB drive in addition to the iMac.  Both drives are connected to our family iMac (Mid 2007).
The problem is that our 320GB WD that has all of our data is full.  So, we bought a new 3TB (!!) Seagate USB3 drive.  I am planning to have this drive be a backup drive for the iMac, our media (more on that in a moment), and two other computers (our 13-inch rMBP and my home-built mac (if you know what I mean)).  This site suggested that I create partitions for each Mac that I back up.  So I formatted the drive with three partitions: 2TB for the iMac and the media drive connected to it, 300GB for my MacBoook, and 700GB for the third Mac.  BTW, I am planning to switch to using the 1TB WD drive that I currently use for backups as the new media drive, and retiring the 320GB WD.
I tried carrying the plan through, but I came across a few issues.  First, I would like to keep the 930GB of backups that I currently have on the 1TB and move them to a new 2TB partition on my new 3TB drive.  First, Finder refused to copy the backups.backupdb folder entirely, but I fixed this by reformatting the Seagate as a case-sensitive volume. Then, when I tried to do the copy it first just had the stripey progress bar for an hour at least saying "preparing to copy x number of items" and that number gradually went up.  I left the computer running with Caffeine overnight, but it got stuck somewhere in the copy and I couldn't kickstart it again.  Should I just abandon my old backups?  930GB is a lot of data to copy, but I don't see why it would get hung up somewhere.  Maybe that was a sign that I should just start fresh with this new drive.  Speaking of which, if I do start afresh, how can I get Time Machine to not format my drive as case sensitive?  I've never used case sensitivity before (except when TM automatically formatted my last drive as such) and don't want it on my backups.  Lastly, I still have the daunting task of copying all my data from the 320GB drive to the 1TB one.  Should I just select all and copy, or should I use a tool like Carbon Copy Cloner?  Additionally, would hooking both drives up to my rMBP speed up the copy?  I'm just copying from USB2 to USB2.  Does this sound like a good plan?

You propose to partition the 3GB this way ...
1 - iMac TM + media --> 2TB partition
2 - MB TM --> 300GB partition
3 - other Mac TM --> 700GB partition
That seems to abandon the use of any of the existing HDs. Why not do a partitioning this way?
3TB HD
1 - iMac TM --> 2TB partition (by itself rather than shared with media)
2 - other Mac TM --> 1TB partition (rather than a 700GB partition)
A - MB TM --> 320GB HD (rather than in a 300GB partition)
B - media backup --> 1TB HD (rather than in co-storage on a 2TB partition)
As to abandoning old TM backups ... To what extent do you believe that any of the prior backup files will be required in the future? To what extent can you pull those files separately from the TM backup and then archive them separately? IOW, to what extent can you look at your existing TM backup and say ... uh ... this is just old stuff that I will never need to (or have time to) see again or ... OH! ... this old file needs to be kept for the rest of eternity?
Unfortunately, I cannot speak for the process of copying an existing TM backup to a new drive, let alone partitioning with/without case sensitivity.

  • No "OPTIONS" box in Time Machine setup window

    just finished setting uo a Time Capsule as a WDS remote, for the time with a PB on its wired ethernet. added an external USB disk to the TC for trial.
    TC and external disk show up correctly on PB and networked machines. external disk ca be used to stream video over the wired ethernet. too slow over 11g
    slide the switch, confirm the TC drive as a backup disk, enter yr password, then after a few minutes "error - no backup volume has been selected, open system preferences" (thats where i came from)
    interesting is that the "options" button has now disappeared from the Time Machine setup menu, and the slider doesn't go back anymore.
    can somebody gimme some guidance pls? thks.

    Apple has never fully committed support of the Time Machine/Airport Extreme combination.  I have a Airport Extreme 6th gen that supposedly supports the Time Machine, (page 13 of the installation manual).  After a year of experience I have concluded that it does not work - period.  If you have any critical data on your system(s) I would recommend that you use a dedicated backup/recovery product like Carbon Copy Cloner.

    I'm trying to configure Time Machine for the first time. I open Time Machine preferences and slide the slider to ON. Because no backup disk is selected, a window pops up where possible drives are to be listed. The Time Machine instructions say this...

    You see a list of every available disk that can be used to store backups, including internal hard disks (except for your startup disk), most external disks, and any Time Capsule devices set up for use with Time Machine. If you have partitioned a disk, the partitions are listed.
    I do not see a list of any available disks, not even the internal hard disk on my computer. I only have two button options--Setup Time Capsule or Cancel.
    When I click Setup Time Capsule it opens my Airport Utility and takes me to the setup page for my Airport Extreme. Why? My Airport Extreme Base Station is already setup and running. How do I get drives to appear in the Time Machine setup window?

    My two external drives are connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station via USB. My tower is connected to the Base Station via Ethernet. My internal drive is, of course, internal and is supposed to show and it's not. Here's their formats...
    Internal Drive - Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    My two external drives don't seem to show up in Disk Utility. In Finder the format shows as...
    External Drive 1 - SMB (FAT)
    External Drive 2 - Has two partitions (rather, 1 partition and two volumes) both of which are listed as Apple Share.
    I just re-read your note. I connected External Drive 1 directly to the tower and Time Machine spoke right up and asked if I wanted to use the drive for backing up. The format then appeared in Disk Utility as MS-DOS (FAT32).
    - It would appear the drive must be directly connected to the tower to be used by Time Machine. Is this true?
    - Why does my internal drive not appear as the Apple Help file says it should?
    - I may have to purchase another external hard drive. If so, is there a particular format it should be in for use with Time Machine?

  • Drives not mounting from old time machine setup

    Hello all.
    I had a time machine setup on a Lacie big disk 2 tb drive through firewire, but when i unplugged it (ejecting first) the plugged it back up in would not mount again.
    I have done all the possible tests to diagnose the issue, new cable different port, different port type even a different disk drive. however it still wont mount. the drives will mount in a normal macbook but not in the xserve. my xserve is a 9g55 running 10.5.6 OSX server
    The disk however will show up in the system information under the appropriate connection type..
    Any ideas?? i have restarted the server multiple times now

    Did you try a different FW port on the XServe? Have you tried connecting via USB to see if the drive show up?
    Have you tried resetting the PMU?

  • Larger scale Time Machine setup, really bad performance

    Hi,
    we have 2 Intel XServes running OS X Server 10.5.2 with 2 XServe RAID setups, each with 5,2TB capacity. The first server now contains about 2TB data and we would like to try and use the second one as a Time Machine backup destination using AFP. The initial backup is still running after 10 days, and that backup is only 429GB. I've got a couple of questions:
    - Somehow I seriously doubt even Apple ever tried a Time Machine backup like this, but has anyone ever tried something like this?
    - The backup is running really slowly, only 300KB/s or something. The link between these servers is 1GBit. Is there anyway we can speed this up?
    - What would be the best alternative for using Time Machine? It would be nice if we could offer the same functionality (e.g. retaining multiple versions of the same file for a period of time).

    From what I can gather, TM is not intended for the type of use you expect out of it. That being said, what I suggest you do is test the throughput between your two Xservs. Create a 5GB file (which is a reasonable size for this test) on one of the Macs, then use a terminal window with the timer command to cp that file from its home volume to a volume on the other Xserve. You will see exactly how long the file takes to copy. If the copy is very slow, then it is unrealistic to expect TM to be faster, but you may be able to do things to improve your network throughput.
    For an alternative, probably your best bet is EMC's Retrospect.

  • Restoring from a time machine backup question

    Hi!
    I have done several time machine restores before (every occassion has been restoring to a fresh install of the OS) and have had no problems. But i have a question about what will happen in the following situation:
    I plan to install Lion on my mac which has 2 hard drives: 1 has the OS, apps, and media cache; and the other just has raw footage and project files.  My Time Machine disk backs up BOTH hard drives.  What I am going to do is erase my OS hard drive and do a fresh install of Lion and then restore all my data and files to it using Time Machine (I always do a fresh install when changing OS because it eliminates problems and works fine when restoring from Time Machine). But my question is: what Time Machine will do about the secondary hard drive when it is restoring since I am not going to erase it? and the Time Machine has a back up of it.
    Since I have done it before, I know what options Time Machine gives you when restoring, but they are irrelivent to this issue since I have files on both hard drives.

    Do you mean use Setup Assistant when your Mac boots up to transfer everything but OSX (via this window)?:
    (That's the Snow Leopard version;  the Lion version is a bit different.)
    If so, that will transfer only from the backups of the OSX partition.  Time Machine keeps the backups for each drive/partition separate, and only presents the ones with OSX on them here.

    Such problems are fairly unusual.  Most folks do just fine by simply upgrading "in place."
    And unless you bought a Lion OSX USB thumb drive, or have another Snow Leopard bootable volume, you'll have a problem:  you must use Snow Leopard to download Lion from the App Store, so you can't erase the drive first.  

  • Snow Leopard Time Machine process question/possible problem

    For starters I want to say that I am not dealing with my own machine, but a friend's, so there's some missing information. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Ok, so my best friend bought a 15" MBP thru me during my short time as an Apple retail employee, which is how I got called in to "fix" it, although I'm still better with PCs than Macs. Anyway, it was purchased around December 2010, has at least Snow Leopard, intel i5 processor, 500 GB HD, not sure if 5000 or 7200 rpm, 4GB RAM. A day or so ago it started acting "weird" he says, like when closing google chrome the color wheel spun forever and took forever to close, and from then on every program acted the same; took forever to open and close. He said it was like there was some major process running in the background that was just using up all of the RAM and processor, leaving him with nothing to use for anything else. He shut it down and restarted it several times, but it acted the same. Sometimes he'd even have to force power it down. He then decided to do a wipe and restore with Time Machine. Thanks to google images I know for sure that he went thru all the bs with selecting what exactly to do, what restore to use, and where to install it, and that the transfer screen with the finder-to-fnder-like image and the progress bar appeared and completed fully before it automatically restarted itself. White screen with Apple logo appeared, he heard the boot up chime/BONG/WALL-E noise before the spinner wheel came up under the logo, which is where it stands now.
    The only question/concern is that it has been here for 10 hours, literally. Now the spinner is STILL spinning, that has not frozen that either of us are aware of, but both of us being so new to Macs we are completely unsure if it's ok. I did some online research and I've seen where people have had their macs freeze on boot up, but they usually don't chime; or it took like 14 hours to do the entire restore process, but they were significantly older and slower machines. Like I said, this could be status quo for this process, but I honestly do not know that. Feel free to just say "depending on the amount it's restoring, it could very well take that long, be patient" if that's the honest truth. I'm looking for verification.
    PS - his time machine backup is on an external USB hard drive, which is plugged in, and it's from November as he forgets to plug it in, but he has like photoshop and aperture, takes lots of pictures (yes we know those since November are gone), and honestly is on his MBP so much the only way I can think to describe it is that he literally uses it like a cheap whore.

    delete all drivers using the correct un-indtstall software, re-instalthe mac softeware and in stalll. GO TO SYSTEM PREFS, and select the printer and add the printer to the left side for install
    , then select that partictular printer.

  • Time Machine Restore Question

    Hi,
    I need to restore my Macbook Pro from my Time Machine backup as I cannot boot (gets stuck on the Apple screen with the wheel spinning and Disk Verify and Repair both fail). My questions is......if I do that will my bootcamp partition, which works perfectly, remain in place or will it be deleted / removed.

  • Just bought a 3TB Firewire Drive for Time Machine, a Question About Mixing Files or Paritioning

    I have two internal HDs, one 1.5TB spinning drive and a 60GB SSD for the OS and apps. Externally I have 2-1TB FW drives that I use for media files & other data. I would like to use the 3TB as my failsafe TM backup, but I wonder if 2TB is enough in the short term? I know TM backups get big, but I'm hoping by just backing up the internals and using Crashplan for all I could quickly recover from a HD disaster locally.
    Here's my question, is there any downside to mixing Time Machine backups and "regular" files (docs, media, emails) on the same Time Machine drive or would I be better served partitioning this drive 2/1? Is there any advantage to partitioning to keep TM on its own parition?
    And do you think that 2TB is sufficient for say the next 6-months to 1-year to hold 1.56TB of data?

    There's no way to predict how long it will take to fill up a TM volume. That depends on your usage pattern. If you have large files that change often, it will fill up a lot faster than it will if you have only small files that change often.
    The surest way to fill up a TM volume quickly is to back up the virtual disk files created by virtualization software such as VMware. Those files should be excluded from TM backup, and their contents should be backed up from within the guest OS, using tools native to that OS.
    When the volume does fill up, snapshots will be deleted to make room for new ones, oldest first. Files still on the source volumes will never be deleted.
    People on this site often give the advice that the size of the TM volume should be at least some particular multiple of the size of the source volumes, such as 2 or 3. I don't know what evidence that advice is based on, if any. It seems completely arbitrary to me.

    Hi There, Macbook newbie here, got my macbook for xmas and I am totally converted.
    I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of how to set up a 'system restore' type of thing similiar to the windows system restore via time machine.
    Do I need to connect to an external hard drive for this?
    External hard drive question, are there special 'mac' external hard drives or could I just pick anyone up eg seagate/freecom etc?
    Anti virus question: which software would you recommend for Anti virus?
    Appreciate any help and looking forward to making them most of my new mac!

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    In addition to the info offered by Jolly Giant, Time Machine is rather different from the system restore feature of Windoze.
    First, a bit of terminology: +Time Machine+ is the software built-in to recent Macs that does backups and restores. It can back up to an internal HD, an external HD, or a +Time Capsule,+ which is a piece of Apple hardware that combines a wireless router and hard drive.
    Technically, this forum is for +Time Capsules;+ there are separate forums in the Leopard and Snow Leopard sections for +Time Machine.+
    Time Machine backs-up +*your entire system+* -- OSX, apps, configuration, users, settings, preferences, data, etc. It also keeps previous versions of things you've changed or deleted (so it needs more space than what's used on your system).
    You can then easily browse the backups and restore selected items, if you've deleted or changed them in error, or they somehow got corrupted.
    Or, if something goes terribly wrong, you can also restore your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup, even if that's a previous version of OSX. That's the procedure Jolly Giant referred you to in the FAQ Tip.

  • Aperture 3.0.2 Time Machine Backup Question

    So I recently imported my entire iPhoto Library into aperture and chose to have everything in the Aperture Library not referencing from the iPhoto Library. Either way everything went great and I'm loving it. My question has to do with when I recently backed up in Time Machine. I noticed the Time Machine backup file size was about 9gb lower then the one on my internal drive? Anyone know the reason for this? iPhoto never had any file size issues when backing up. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong here and if there was a way to get some drive space back that would be great as well.

    One other thing I noticed right away was after importing my iPhoto Library over to the Aperture Library file the file size of my Aperture Library was about 8gb larger...which is a pretty considerable difference. Anyone know why this is?

  • Migration assistant from Time Machine - more questions

    I have recently used Time Machine with Migration Assistant to transfer account information from an old iMac I am decommissioning. At first, I decided to simply transfer account information documents, and not any programs. However, after completing the Migration, I tried to use it again to copy across programs. However, the second time I used it, the Assistant did not recognize the Time Machine backup for the old iMac (even though the sparsebundle exists). Furthermore, when the older iMac began its Time Machine 'cycle' (eg, it has not been fully shut down yet), it did not recognize this bundle either, and created a new TM backup.
    Can anyone help? I am most concerned with ensuring I have what I need on my new computer. But also would not want to have to get rid of the old sparsebundle, as it might contain information I need in the future.

    Have you run any backups of the new Mac? If so, how did you answer the "Re-use" prompt, per #B5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    It sounds like you did, and selected "re-use." If so, that may be the problem. The old sparse bundle was "converted" to belong to the new Mac, so all the new backups belong to it.
    That would also explain why backing-up the old Mac started a new sparse bundle -- the old one is now associated with the new Mac, not the old one.
    Migration Assistant uses the last backup from the sparse bundle you select; you can't pick and choose which one you want.
    Your best bet may be to use the +*Browse . . .+* option, per #17 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). See if you can find the last backup of the old Mac. If so, you should be able to selectively restore from it. You'll need to restore to an "alternate location;" see #15 in Troubleshooting.

  • Time machine space questions, not the same as Activity Monitor

    I am new here and kindly ask your thoughts on what I am seeing.
    I have a 13" MacBook Pro early 2011 with OS 10.7.5
    Earlier this year I tried an upgrade to a new OS and experienced a failure that required me to make a visit to the Apple store.
    I believe they reinstalled the OS and if I remember correctly I just did a recovery with the Time Machine backup I had.
    While that backup was not very recent, yea OK I get that was stupid, what was odd was that not all my files were backed up.
    I lost a significant number of files from April 2013 until the time of the failure in 2014, for reasons I have no clue as to why.
    My Time Machine does not have any excluded files as far as I can tell.
    So my first question is:  Can anyone help me understand what may have happened and how to counter that?
    Then yesterday I decided to invest in a new backup external drive.
    During the process of setting it up and doing the 1st Time Machine backup on that, I noticed the following:
    In Activity Monitor under the "Disk Usage" tab shows the Macintosh HD as using 258 of 319 GB, and then selecting my user name it shows using 578 of 639 GB.
    When I did the backup with Time Machine it backed up approximately 250GB.
    I thought Time Machine backed up the entire HD.
    What is the difference between the Macintosh HD space and the user space in terms of usage and total?
    Should I be worried or visiting the Apple store again?

    OK, done.
    I created a text.txt document containing the words "Version 0". I saved it to the Desktop, closed it and selected "Back Up Now" from the Finder.
    Waited for that to complete, opened the test.txt document again, modified it by adding the words "Version 1", saved it, closed it and selected "Back Up Now" again.
    Repeated that twice more, so the end result was a Text.txt containing the words "Version 0", "Version 1", "Version 2", and "Version 3".
    I expect that I should now have three versions from which to choose to restore, all from different times, plus the latest one still on the Desktop.
    Creation and backups now complete, so the next step was restoration:
    From the Finder, I used "Enter Time Machine" and verified that I had four different recent times from which to choose. I chose the original text.txt document and elected to "keep both files". It restored the original, which I opened and verified it contained nothing but the text "Version 0".
    I repeated this for the subsequent version. I opened that one and confirmed it contained the words "Version 1".
    I repeated this for the subsequent version. Now I have three restored text.txt documents, plus the one on the Desktop.
    I opened all four text.txt documents and stacked them as shown in the following screenshot:
    Conclusion, no surprises that I can determine.
    Is this what you had in mind, or was there something I did that was different from what you need?

  • Time Machine newb questions.

    Pardon me if any (or all) of this has been asked and answered, and if there is a online resource that addresses all of this, please let me know, as I wasn't able to find one.
    1.) When I first plug in a Windows formatted USB hard drive, will it still ask if I want to use it for Time Machine, and if I say yes, does it reformat it for me?
    2.) When using a USB hard drive for Time Machine backup on a MacBook Pro, it won't be plugged in ALL the time, but I'll plug it in when I can, at least every other day. I know Time Machine does hourly backups, but in this case it won't be able to. Does it just start once I plug the drive in, and do hourly backups as long as the drive is plugged in? Then if I unplug it, does it just peaceful wait for the drive to be there again to continue backing up?
    3.) I believe the answer to this one is yes, and I've seen some info on it. But I wanted to double check. Can I use my Time Machine drive to do a full system and software restore if I should either a.) have my int. drive die, or b.) replace the drive myself? I know there is software like SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner that do a more direct method of this, but can this also be done with the Time Machine drive in combination with your Mac Install DVD?

    Yes. That will erase it. We recommend formatting it yourself, though. See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

    Yup.

    Yes. Just be careful to eject the drive before unplugging it. If you don't, OSX won't be able to "close out" the disk properly, and your backups might be corrupted.

  • Time Machine setup with my Belkin N1 Vision

    Hi, I purchased my first iMac (love it!) after being a Windows person forever. I have a home office setup with an Dell XPS One & my new iMac. Both are working perfectly with my Belkin N1 Vision router +(via direct ethernet connection, although both can access the wireless connection as well)+. I purchased the Time Capsule so that I can use it within my network (in partcular with the Time Machine for my iMac). I do NOT want to use the Time Capsule as a wireless network (+I like my Belkin too much and it is super strong within my home)+.
    I plugged it directly to the ethernet port open on my Belkin to the Internet Wan port back of the Time Capsule. But no matter what I do, I can't see the Capsule on either computer. I have reset the Capsule several times and even reset my router a couple times. The Capsule appears to be working fine with a nice bright green glow. Can anyone help me or suggest something to get it working and or reconnized within my network? Have I connected it properly? I appricate any advice & keep in my I am a newbie with Apple OS +(expert with Windows)+. I am going to take the Capsule back otherwise, but I really wanted this to work! Thanks!!

    On the screen of the Vision, can you scroll to the Devices pane? Are you seeing an IP address being issued for the TC you have connected?
    From another angle, have you tried using only the Time Capsule and checking if the computers can see it then? Simply pull the plug on your Vision for a minute and try to connect to a wireless network (preferably not a neighbor, but that of your TC). The TC may be trying to host a DHCP server and is getting blocked by the Vision.
    On a side note, having a Vision router and knowing someone with a TC, I believe the TC has better range than Belkin's product.
