Time Machine telling me I need a 2.5 million GB for a backup!

This is craziness. I had an issue where I lost my Admin Account after upgrading to Leopard and I was able to get it restored last night with help from this forum. When I woke up this morning I had the following error with Time Machine:
This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 2516584.0 GB but only 356.9 GB are available.
To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine.
So my hard drive is 250 GB and my back up drive is 500 GB. Anyone have any clue what is going on and how I can fix this?
Thanks!
Jeffrey Visgaitis

This is clearly an error and should be reported to Apple via their Feedback procedure. The 2516584.0 GB is somehow a weird arithmetic error in the TM software somewhere.

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

  • My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external disk for unknown reasons.  It would not accept my password and said the disk is read-only and damaged.  How can I copy my files to my Mac so I can repair it?

My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external drive for unknown reasons.  It began after a series of power outages (my equipment is protected by a surge protector with battery backup), and was shut down correctly.  Then it began by not recognizing my disk and my Time Machine password, although I am positive it was correct. I tried NUMEROUS times to get into it. It says the disk is damaged and needs to be erased and started over.  How can I back up my files on my Mac so I can do that? I have no other disk to back up to.  I found the files in a folder called "Backups.backupdb", and tried to copy them into a folder, but get the message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."  The "lost+found" folder did copy for me. Will I just have to lose 4 years of backups?

    Hi there,
I have the same issue. Usually hangs after 10K od sometimes after 18MB of backup file.
    Config: iTunes 10.4., Win 7 64bit, iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3
I tried all of these without success:
    - deleted backups via iTunes / Preferences
    - deleted backups from sync folder
    - created a new admin user and tried to sync
    - reinstalled iTunes
    - ran all Windows updates, restarted, reinstalled iTunes
    - ran iTunes / Diagnostics (says everything okay, only info which is strange: diag says I am not a admin user, which is not correct)
Nothing helped. Who can help. I hope someone from Apple can take care, as I seem not to be the only one. Actually iTunes is the worst part about iPhone. Hope with iOS 5 and Cloud sync to get rid of iTunes.
    Any hints welcome,
    Cheers,

I can't migrate from a time machine Back up. I select my TC and it says "some backups can't be opened. Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. It appears that some backups are already in use. If you don't see the backup you need, make sure it is not currently mounted by another machine and try again."

Read the section E about restore issues.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But you should be able to mount the sparsebundle and backup the major items if they are not damaged. You might also do a disk verify to see if the corruption can be repaired.
Have a look here also for restore of selected items.

  • I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine.  I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake  a back-up.  I have now switched of all screen savers.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

My time machine does not back up and giving me this error message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Amiel’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. Pls help.

Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category.

Time Machine options are not working. I am unable to schedule automatic backups.  The On-Off button is grayed out. I can perform a backup manually.

Thanks for responding.  I have an external disk with plenty of room.  It is used only for backup of my computer.  I get a backup by clicking on the Time Machine icon at the top of the page and select "Back Up Now."  When I click on Time Machine Preferences, there is a box labeled "Options" which allows me to exclude items from backup and notify after old backups are deleted.  There is no option to schedule a backup.  The "OFF/ON" box is gray.  For "Next Backup:" it says "Automatic backups off."  I would like to turn it on.

Let it alone. No one can tell how long it will take as that is a function of your data.

    >Step 1. Backup existing data using time machine.
Time Machine is nice, but you have very little in terms of ability to verify that your data is all backed up.      I find Time Machine is better for the occasional recovery of previously written data at specific times.  A good backup solution that survives an erase and install (there is no clean install in Mac OS X), is a clone, and preferably TWO clones.    See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Time Machine can work as good as a clone, and in fact I once had to rely on it because my hard drive died.  Thankfully it did recover everything.   But I had my clone just in case it didn't work.     Now I feel more comfortable since clones allow you to boot themselves, and thus prove all the important system information got saved, and not just the user data.
Clones are also easier to import with the migration assistant.

I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

No. TM has to look through your entire drive contents and copy them all. This will take some time.
Once the first backup is made, then subsequent backup will be much quicker, depending on how much data has changed since the last one.

  • What should i do i cant install time machine back up .I need urgent help please :(

Hey guys ! please help me tomorrow is my exam and I don't have my laptop for study . A while ago I needed windows on my mac and while installing it via boot-camp I somehow managed to wipe whole mac partition even recovery so I was left with only windows on my mac.
My Condition :- No recovery     PS. I have external recovery on my USB. I saved those files from internet recovery was tired of downloading 1GB every time to get into recovery. )
    No mac OS
    no recovery partition .
so now the problem is I always thought that I do have a time machine backup on my hard disk so ill just install it simple .
I tried internet recovery ... then got into recovery ... tried to install my time machine backup and it said .. [ ERROR CREATING RECOVERY PARTITION ]
I had the time machine backup of OSX mavericks .
when I tried the reinstall OSX option it said it will download mountain lion . I was like fine download it whatever .. i tried the download but every time I try it get stuck at a point with some error . (maybe cause of my slow internet )
I have reinstalled the windows 8.1 but I cant use X-CODE on it .
    what should I do
    I want my OSX backup
my friend have a ISO of Mavericks and mountain lion both will they help ?

    Recovery Partition Creator 3.8
Recovery Partition – Recreate Without Reinstalling
Recovery Partition – Recreate Without Reinstalling (Requires Installer)
When you go to Internet Recovery use Disk Utility to repair the drive and repair permissions. Then erase the partition, formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click the option button and select GUID. Then try to install the OS.

  • Clean Install of 10.8.2 Won't Recognize the BackUp Drive as a Valid Time Machine Drive. Applications Needs to be Restored

Hi, for some reason my clean installed 10.8.2, when I use the Migration Assitant won't recognize Time Machine [It's mounted alright (Firewire 800 with green icon with the Time Machine logo) Western Digital, My Book Studio model. I probably should have opted for Apple's significantly expensive Time Machine when it comes to integration and backup]. It would go into Time Machine but the Restore would be dimmed out. All the snapshots are from Mountain Lion; I'm wondering why it's not compatible. If I try to restore the Applications it won't let it. I've manually copied the Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Movies, Music files but I can't find the the Applications folder in that external backup drive to copy from or at least see what apps I've installed and reinstall them.
How do I go about at least viewing what apps are in my latest Time Machine snapshot so I can reinstall- a blessing in disguise coz' at least it'll be more streamlined. It's prudent, by God's grace that I have another USB external drive with Snow Leopard on it to run some apps I've used before doing the clean install (I had to erase and zero-out the hard drive for security because it's part of the Apple hardisk replacement program which I'm thankful for- AppleCare is worth it for very expensive gadgets like this late-2009 iMac. Reinstalling and putting things back to normal is a little tedious, thankfully there are other projects to be busy with while it copies and downloads updates).
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Does Time Machine by default exclude System and Applications Folder (I didn't click any option to exclude those I remembered)? How do I not exclude the Applications folder and System files this time around?
In Time-Travel view when I point it to the Applications folder, it switches to the Volumes folder and the Restore is dimmed. I wonder if it's incompatible because it's not Apple's Time Machine or it's a bug with Moutain Lion (the drive is backing up the new clean install of Mountain Lion now but when I test it, use Migration Assistant if I need to restore things again, it still doesn't see it as a Time Machine backup).
What could be the solution? Should I reinstall my applications again (I guess that's a blessing in disguise, now I can declutter)?
    Thank you.

  • Want to use Time Machine, what do I need to do?

Looking to free up space on my computer, heard about Time Machine, but, have no clue what it is or how to use it.  Do I really need to use it?

Time Machine makes incremental (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly) backups of your internal drive to an external drive. It should not be viewed as a way of saving space on your internal drive, but should be considered part of any backup scheme.
If you're running out of space on your internal drive I would recommend either getting an external drive on which to store data or upgrading your internal drive to a higher-capacity drive. I do recommend getting an external drive of at least 2-3x the size of your internal drive for a Time Machine backup, as well as an external drive using a 'clone' of your internal drive as additional backup.
While all of this (putting in a larger-capacity internal drive, investing in two external drive - one for a Time Machine backup and one for a clone) might sound expensive, drive prices have come down tremendously in the past couple of years and it's a measure of how important your data is to you: hard drives fail and it's best to have at least two backup schemes in place - I prefer Time Machine backups as well as clones. All my drives will never fail at once.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
