Time taken to truncate table

Hi,
We use Oracle 9.2.0.8.
There is a table whose size is almost 30GB.
Considering there are no locks and just one index string on this table, is there a way to estimate the time taken to truncate this table?
I need to plan this activity. Does anybody can give me any idea about time based on old experiences?
Thanks in advance,
Fer

Seconds... (if there are no locks).
Truncate is an operation on data dictionary metadata. Oracle will free all extents exept the first one and will mark all blocks in the first extent as unused. No data blocks are "formatted" or "cleared". (If you open your datafile in hex editior, you can still see contents of datablocks - names, addresses, phone numbers etc.).
If truncate does not complete in 15 seconds, you can start looking for locks.
You can also try:
LOCK TABLE my_30gig_tab IN EXCLUSIVE MODE;
before attempting TRUNCATE.
If there are locks on the table then your session will "hang" on LOCK TABLE statement (your session will wait, but it can take long time), but subsequent TRUNCATE should be fast.

    I have been asked to develop a report for "Report to display Average time taken for processing payments".
    Could any one guide me technically what are the different tables i need to take to generate the report. Treat this is very urgent. Pls provide sample code too....
    Thanks in advance....

    Given below is the set up for credit card payment processing:
    Set Up Credit Control Areas:
    Define Credit Control Area
    Transaction: OB45
    Tables: T014
    Action: Define a credit control area and its associated currency.  The Update Group should be ‘00012’.  This entry is required so the sales order will calculate the value to authorize
    Assign Company Code to Credit Control Area
    Transaction: OB38
    Tables: T001
    Action: Assign a default credit control area for each company code
    Define Permitted Credit Control Area for a Company

  • Delta Sync taking too much time on refreshing of tables

    Hi,
    I am working on Smart Service Manager 3.0. I have come across a scenario where the delta sync is taking too much time.
    It is required that if we update the stock quantity then the stock should be updated instantaneously.
    To do this we have to refresh 4 stock tables at every sync so that the updated quantity is reflected in the device.
    This is taking a lot of time (3 to 4 min) which is highly unacceptable from user perspective.
    Please could anyone suggest something so that  only those table get refreshed upon which the action is carried out.
    For eg: CTStock table should get refreshed only If i transfer a stock and get updated accordingly
    Not on any other scenario like the changing  status from accept to driving or any thing other than stocks.
    Thanks,
    Star

    Hi fiontan,
    Thanks a lot for the response!!!
    Yeah!! I kow it's a lotta code, but i thought it'd be more informative if the whole function was quoted.
    I'm in fact using the PrintWriter to wrap the BufferedWriter but am not using the print() method.
    Does it save any time by using the print() method??
    The place where the delay is occurring is the wile loop shown below:
                while(allitems.hasMoreElements()){
                String aRow = "";
                    XDItem item = (XDItem)allitems.nextElement();
                    for(int i =0 ; i < props.length; i++){
                         String value = item.getStringValue(props);
         if(value == null || value.equalsIgnoreCase("null"))
              value = "";
                             if(i == 0)
                                  aRow = value;
                             else
                                  aRow += ("\t" + value);
    startTime1 = System.currentTimeMillis();
    System.out.println("time here is--before-writing to buffer --out.flush() done: " +startTime1);
    bufferWrt.write(aRow.toCharArray());
    out.flush();//added by rosmon to check extra time taken for extraction//
    bufferWrt.flush();//added by rosmon to check extra time taken for extraction//
    bufferWrt.newLine();
    startTime2 = System.currentTimeMillis();
    System.out.println("time here is--after-writing to buffer : " +startTime2);
    What exactly happens is that after a few loops it just seems to sleep for around 20 seconds and then again starts off and ............it goes on till the records are done.
    Please do lemme know if you have any idea as to why this is happening !!!!! This bug is giving me the scare.
    thanks in advance

  • Use of truncating table

    Hi,
    I'm using some temporary load tables which are populated with bulk data daily & data is deleted after processing.
    During processing, I found that suddenly select statements became very slow inspite of very small data.
    Then I ran truncate command on the table & the select queries became faster as were before.
    Here I want to know the significance of running truncate on tables on a fixed time as there are tables in production which are being populated & deleted daily but never truncated.
    As truncate directly pulls down the water mark to 0, is there any option to do so using delete+commit?
    Thanks
    Deepak

    If you have temporary tables, you would generally want to declare them as GLOBAL TEMPORARY tables rather than declaring them as permanent tables. Life is generally much easier that way.
    If you do require permanent tables with transient data, you would need to use DDL to reset the high water mark, and TRUNCATE is the easiest option on that front. You may, however, be able to simply gather/ set statistics on the object that reflect the actual data volume to avoid any performance problems. Resetting the high water mark will only affect the performance of full table scans, but the CBO may choose full table scans less frequently if it has appropriate statistics on the table.

  • ORA-01502: Index or Partition is in unusable status. while truncating table

    Hi All,
    One of our Devlopers compalined that he is getting ORA-01502 : Index or partition is unusable status while truncating the a table in our Dataware house production database. He is using the following commands.
    Alter index <index_name> unusable;
    Truncate table <table_name> ;
    He is running a scripts to truncate each table and ecah time he is passing the table name as an input parameter to script. He is using same method to truncate four tables each having a BITMAP and a REGULAR index. For two tables every thing is working fine, but for other two tables the he is getting ORA-01502 for BITMAP indexes. It a weekly process and every week he is getting the same issue. I checkd the Index status, they are in valid status only.
    For a work around I have created a table with BITMAP and regular index in our dev database. made the indexes unusable, checked their status. I truncated the table. Importent thing here is the Indexes are becoming vaild when I truncate the table.
    I suspect that my devloper's Indexes were already in unusable status (before he use the command ALTER INDEX), when he truncated the table, oracle trying to validate the index and throwing the error ORA-01502 because the Indexes are in unusabel statsu for a while.
    I tried searching for the mechanism of truncate table command and its effect on Indexes. But I did not find any luck, no one is speaking about index when truncating the table. Can any one please help me????
    Sorry for lengthy post. Any help is greatly appriciated and I thank every one in advance.

  • Query Execution time - Elapsed time v Actual time taken

    Hi All,
    I have this scenario where I am querying a single table with the following results. It is a very heavy query in that there are multiple aggregate functions and multiple unions on it. Even if the query is written poorly (i doubt it is) why would the actual
    time taken to execute the query be much more than the statistics provided through the following commands?
    SET STATISTICS IO ON;
    SET STATISTICS TIME ON;
    Attached are the stats provided for the relevant query in question.
    Table '123456789_TEMP_DATA'. Scan count 178, logical reads 582048, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0.
    Table 'Worktable'. Scan count 0, logical reads 0, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0.
    SQL Server Execution Times:
       CPU time = 936 ms,  elapsed time = 967 ms.
    2014-01-06 17:36:41.383
    Now, although the CPU Time/Elapsed time shows that it takes less than a second, it actually takes more than 15 seconds to fetch the results. (This is the actual time that you get on the bottom bar of the Query pane as well.)
    What is the reason? Why is it that there is such a big discrepancy between the numbers? How can I improve this situation?
    Thanks!

    Yes. I am returning a huge number of rows to the client.
    The query is simply against a single table.
    Select
     'First Record',AVG(COLUMN1),STDEV(COLUMN1
    ),COUNT(COLUMN1)
    FROM [TABLE1] WHERE (SOME CONDITION)
    UNION ALL
    Select  'Second Record',AVG(COLUMN2),STDEV(COLUMN2),COUNT(COLUMN2) FROM [TABLE1]
    WHERE (SOME OTHER CONDITION)
    Imagine there are 178 records fetched in this manner with 178 UNIONs. The WHERE clause will always change for each SELECT statement.
    Now, the question is not so much about the query itself, but why the execution time is actually 15 seconds whilst the SQL STATISTICS show it to be 936ms (<1 second)
    Thanks!

  • Can grant truncate table permission to a user?

    Whether can grant  truncate table permission to a user separately.
    I know that the role db_ddladmin can do,but the create,alter and drop permissions will be granted the same time(These permissions are not what we want to
    grant to user).
    Is there any solution?
    Best regards!!
    If you haven't all the things you want,be grateful for the things you don't have that you didn't want.

    You can't grant truncate because for whatever reason, that permission doesn't exist.  What you can do is use a stored procedure and use EXECUTE AS OWNER to get around it.
    create database foo
    go
    create login foobar with password = 'alkdsfji9eorngv';
    go
    use foo
    go
    create user foobar from login foobar;
    go
    create table test(rowid int identity)
    go
    insert into test default values;
    go
    select * from test
    go
    create procedure dbo.truncate_test
    with execute as owner
    as
    truncate table test
    go
    grant execute on dbo.truncate_test to foobar
    go
    execute as login='foobar'
    execute dbo.truncate_test
    revert
    go
    select * from test
    go
    use master
    go
    drop database foo
    drop login foobar
    This keeps your database safe and allows you to grant execute on the truncate procedure to allow them to truncate the table.Jonathan Kehayias

  • Time taken in each section of Mapping

    Hi All,
    One of my mappings is taking a very long to execute in production db. Is there anyway/ any table which lets me view the times taken for each step in the mapping?
    I tried to use Debug mode by opening the mapping in OWB but the debug mode is a lot slower than the mapping itself when deployed - hence i am not able to know accurately where the actual problem might be.
    thanks.

    Hi
    The OWB browser has runtime reports that will let you see the steps and timings.
    There are a bunch of reports in the blog here on the runtime audit tables that you can use in SQLDeveloper, or just rip off the SQL;
    http://blogs.oracle.com/warehousebuilder/2010/10/owb_sql_reports_in_code_samples.html
    Download the zip, either use SQLDev with the reports or take the file OWBReports.xml and look at the SQL in it and use wherever.

  • Time taken for HANA System to become available after a System restart for continuing transaction (in ERP on HANA)

    Hi HANA Gurus,
    Would like to know in a normal system replication based HA for SoH, without memory preload, after an automatic failover to the second node,in how much time HANA becomes available for the SoH(ERP) users to continue transaction.  Consider an ideal scenario with  512 GB appliance , with allocation limit of 490GB approx., considering normal 90% of first 64gb and 97% of every further 64GB memory on the single host.  Also consider a used memory of say 128 GB(indicating database size and considering no custom configuration for specific  tables preload  .Consider the save point is every five minutes as default and committed transactions are written to the log.  Host is replicated to second node using HANA System replication and with HANA automatic failover option. This means on first node failure the HANA system will be restarted on second node and data will be loaded to the memory based on the last state in the other node. As I understand the save points are loaded, logs are applied and database become available for users, the lazy load continues etc. Kindly answer me if anyone knows by experience how much time it takes from the failure detection  to next state of the system becoming available for user to start updating for example a Sales Order. Also like to know more about this start-up process to understand it better(for example the last save points are done by saving the changed pages, so time taken to load the last savepoint pages to memory, then applying transactions from last save point (last 4 minutes for example  before failing over etc).  The purpose is to understand whether the failover time from Primary to standby takes similar time like a traditional db  (for example db2) or more due to memory load time in HANA. At the same time I am aware of other options available to reduce the RTO by using memory preload, cluster solutions from vendors , OS like SUSE etc.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi John
    My question is specific to a system failover  which is not replication with memory preload, where you require cluster software to do the failover. My question is in case of a automatic failover configuration using a standby node . For example gpfs / hana automatic failover option, where standby note starts hana, and  loads last savepoint , applies logs and then start lazy loading.

    Hi,

    Output of Days are should 0..
    You can add 1 to the result you are getting.
    or try this FM  SD_DATETIME_DIFFERENCE
    but pass 00:00:01 in Seconds for both starting time and end time

  • How we can store start time & end time taken by execution of scenerio?

    Hi
    i want to store starting time and ending time taken by executing of any scenerio and date also on which scenerio will be executed.
    plz assist me regards the same
    thanks

    when you say store , you want to capture in some file ,email or table.
    If table , you can have a small sql linking SNP_SESSION and SNP_SCEN and fetching the required detail accordingly.

  • How index affected by truncate table

    HI, all,
    I have a question about indexes in a table. If I truncate the table and reload data, do the indexes in the table still valid?
    From documentation:
    “a table is truncated, all associated indexes are also truncated.”
    What does that mean?
    Do I need to recreate index every time I truncate table?
    Thanks a lot.

    When you truncate a table, you are removing all the data from the table but leaving the structure of the table intact. Logically, the same thing must happen to the index-- all the index data must be removed (since there are no longer any entries in the table), but the structure of the index remains intact.

    No, it's just what it says: it truncates the index, just like it truncates the table. You do not have to recreate the table, nor the index.
    Truncating is deleting without the possibility of a rollback.
