Timed introduction of text
At the beginning of an article, I'm trying to get an image to appear, followed by two headlines which appear one after the other - so the image appears, then a second later headline 1 and then a second after that headline 2. I can nearly get it working by creating an multi-state object and then setting the timing delay between each state. Only problem is that when the next element appears, the old one disappears. Well, I just tried it myself, just to be sure.
I created a multistate object with three states using the Object States panel. There, I was able to set which object state goes first, which next and which last. Then, with my MSO selected I have chosen "Slideshow" in Overlay Creator Panel, where I set the following options: Auto Play - yes, Delay 0.5 (I wanted the effect to start 0.5 sec. after entering the page), Interval 2 sec. and also Play 1 time. Finally I set Crossfade to 1 second.
Now, under those settings you have 2 tickboxes: Loop, and Stop at last Image. If you tick Stop at last Image, you'll get what you wanted.
Stop at last Image will work also if instead of Auto Play you set Tap to Play/Pause.

I would read each line of the text file into an array where the elements of the array are a cluster.
Each cluster would be comprised of an U16, an array with 8 elements of U16, and a second array with 8 elements that are boolean.
Autoindex the array of clusters with a FOR loop. Inside the FOR loop, you would unbundle the cluster to get to the information that you would need. -
Why can't I use iBooks Text Books across devices?
iBooks 2 is incredible with its introduction of Text Books, as is the ability for anyone with a Mac to start developing texts via iBooks Author. This has revolutionary potential written all over it.
BUT, just one thing Apple:
Why in the last year have you pushed so hard to integrate/sync devices via the Cloud, only to introduce a phenomenal tool like the Text Books which can only be used on one device, the iPad, and almost blatantly makes no intention to talk to other devices?
I have invested in the whole Apple product line. I am invested in the ecosystem entirely. Why can I not start reading/note taking from my Biology Text in class on my iPad, continue skimming it from where I left off on my iPhone while going home on the train, and finally pull up the Text Book in iBooks on my Macbook (complete with my notes from the day) where I ultimately want to cut and paste my noted text to be used as quotes in a term paper I am composing in Pages (and what if Pages even talked to iBooks and auto formatted a Bibliography based on the text I have dragged and dropped)? As a student this scenario is not only very forseeable, but neccessary if I am to go over to a digital book format.
Why is this not possible? Should I honestly believe it is the result of poor planning, or rather a strategy to boost iPad sales by making Text Books explicit to the iPad?
After all, in a parallel analogy to the above, Apple ecosystem users can currently: start a film on their iPad, pick up where they left off on their iPhone, and then ultimately finish the film on their Mac or Apple TV. I can even start a normal book on my iPad and leave a bookmark, which I can later pick up on my iPhone. This is awesome and exemplifies the consideration and rigorous thought that I have grown to expect Apple to put in to their products. The devices talk to each other and "it just works." But is apple really allowing all of this, except when it comes to TEXTBOOKS, which is an educational tool?
If the digital Text Books are really going to do so much to revolutionize education, then shouldn't Text Books be available across ALL devices and to all people who ALREADY own iOS/OSX devices in order to reach its maximum potential for influencing a change in education? If these tools are really so revolutionary and represent a paradigm shift, then they will speak for themselves and schools will naturally get on board and dole out the money for the class sets of iPads.
Please Apple, I switched over for a reason. Mostly due to your philosophies and ability to make things that "just work". Don't sell out here. Not allowing Text Books to be accessed across devices does not have the markings of a "paradigm shift in the dark ages of education", but instead reeks of a slick marketing scam by the most successful company in the world to pump tax money out of education budgets into the overflowing pockets of Apple. Shame on you. That is not giving to education, that is taking.
Make good and develop TextBooks to work across ALL iOS/OSX devices, please.

A teacher/studentMy understanding is that you can use the Cloud on any device you want but only one at a time. Just as you can install the Creative Collections on as many computers as you wish but it can only be activated on two at a time but which is not really true since you can only use one of them at a time anyway.
I think the wording about this should change.
For insance I travel and may or may not wish to lug a laptop with me. It is my understanding that I can when raveling log into the CC download m apps and use them on any computer capable of running the apps and work away, But since I am logged in at a different location on a different device it will only work on that device.
And this is the way it shoulkd work because say you travel and your laptop is lost or stolen then you should be able to still use your apps and also stop them from working on the lost computer by logging in somewhere else.
This is the way Iunderstand the advantages of the Cloud. It is designed to be flexible and not inhibiting.
Now on the other had if I ahsd an assistant that I want to use these apps then it makes sense to purchase a license for them as well.
It is one license for one user as it should be but that user can access it where ever they need it.
That is my understanding. -
How do I change the timing in a title effect?
I am using the "Dramatic" text generator that creates text boxes that fly onto the screen. I love the look but need to change the timing of the text boxes to coincide with the V/O. Is this possible or just yet ANOTHER failure of FCP X?
OK, forget my last post. Now that I rebooted and my (worthless) Magic Mouse will allow me to right click again, I can see that right clicking does the trick. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

Extending the display duration of text
What property controls the duration a text will be displayed. Currently, I have a 10 second animation, and after adding the text it disappeared after 3 seconds. I have chosen a LiveType font (Iglow) and when I changed the direction property to Ping-Pong (in LiveFont Timing section), the text displayed for longer - which makes sense to me. The first character of a two character Logo disappeared at 5 seconds, and the second character disappeared at 6 seconds
This logo is for gardening segments, so what I'd like to have, is to have the logo appear, animate (rotation), and then have a flock of birds fly overhead, drop a special "package", where the XXX hits the logo causing it to tilt. Rain comes, sun comes out, and the plant grows - which lifts up the tilted end of the logo restoring it to horizontal position.
I have the birds flying overhead, dropping their special package, while the logo appears,rotates, and would have been hit by the bird dropping, but the text disappears from view.
I imagine this is a fairly simple thing, but have missed it when walking thru the properties, and even though I have some effect on the life of the text when I change the Direction property to Ping-Pong I don't really want to change the Direction property.
I'm using Motion 4, but suspect Motion 3 works the same in this particular areaPatrick Sheffield wrote:

LifeFonts are just animations and you'll generally want them to freeze after they've drawn themselves on...

I see, now, I can adjust the "hold Last" property in the LiveFont timing and it controls when the text disappears - as I think Mark Spencer is suggesting.
Is there another way to accomplish, or is this what you are suggesting as well? -
Photos won't show in movie....

I am creating a new movie. As part of it I want to use some photos/jpegs at certain places. I have inserted them into the project browser no problem, and they show there as expected. I can edit them etc with Inspector no problem also.
However, when I play/view the project, some of the photos do not appear. Instead the screen holds an image of the last clip in the sequence, and then switches to the next once the playhead (red line) has passed over the photo. The transitions on either side of the photo also seem to be 'not seen'.
This doesnt happen for all the images I have used, but I cant find any difference in the properties etc of the ones that do work and the ones that don't, although I could easily be missing something!
The images being used are in iPhoto and they are definitely there (i.e. the media isnt missing).
Can anybody suggest what the problem may be??
I am using iMovie 11 (9.0.4) and my OS is Lion.

IanThe background is a combination of items: Slice Lower Third; Eccentric; Conglobe; and Seriset. It also includes an introduction of text. I'm still having trouble rendering it and coming up with "An error occurred while trying to add a frame to the new movie (-1309)" and it won't render.
I "Save"d photo as livetype without any extension listed. The "export movie" option is grayed out. I'm thinking this is the problem.
Any ideas or thoughts on fixing? -
Preview Highlight "Garbage" characters
I have a fairly strange issue.
I am using Mac BookPro 15 Retina, OS X 10.9.4 (latest update check 16.Jul.14), using Preview app version 7.0 (826.4).
I use Preview for reading all my PDF'es. And I highlight the text, underline, draw speech bubbles, arrows, boxes, etc
I have no problem so far but except one single PDF which is not behaving well.
The issue is this :
I click on View > Highlight and Notes to open up the left-hand side pane (in Preview)
I highlight some text and immediately the left-hand side pane will show the page number and the first few words of the text that I highlight plus the time stamp
This is fine at the beginning
But after using it for a while (which I do not know the exact timing), the highlighted text on the left hand pane start to show garbage character
Not ALL the text I highlight from now onward are garbage, some are still readable text, some are garbage. And there is no fix pattern. I will not know if it is good or bad until I highlighted on it
I did some text, copy the text out to TextEditor, and it show garbage as well, trying to change the font (at TextEditor) does not help too
Bring that PDF to another Mac has the same result
So I download that PDF from the source again and highlight the same text to prove that it is not "corrupted" at source. It is confirm that the text was readable when it is downloaded. But the PDF that I have been modifying results in garbage when I highlighted it and paste to TextEditor.
I have tried to re-download the PDF at least twice and I am still facing the same issue
I ran Font Book app and did a quick check and do not find anything that is invalid. Though I don't really know how to use Font Book app to troubleshoot for this matter.
The above 2 screen shots refer to the same passage in the "bad" PDF. You notice that the second image show the text is not garbage but when you highlight the entire paragraph, it become "corrupted"
The above image shows what happen if I copy and paste to TextEditor.
The frustrating part with this issue is that it only happen to this PDF and the problem occur after using for "some time".

I don't know if you already solved the problem but I came accross with the same issue and found a quick fix. First there are many threads with this topic as old as from 2007. In any case, it seems it has something to do with embeded fonts, and is nearly impossible to fix that. Although there is somebody proposing to save it as TIFF and then using OCR to recognize the text and put together all those TIFF generated pages. I did try that fix once but it was time consuming and I gave up. Anyway, today I just found a fix based on that recommendation. This one gets the TIFF in the same application without having to save different files. These are the steps.
1. Open the file with PdfPen (http://smilesoftware.com/PDFpen/index.html). I have the pro version but the free version also has OCR.
2. Go to File>Save as...
3. Select: Format>TIFF (print, 300dpi)
4. Save. It will save a file with the same name but TIFF
5. Open that file with PdfPen
6. Select the first page of the document in the left side of the window and press command+A to select all the pages
Ok, this is a bit tricky, just follow me
7. Go to Help and type OCR, there will apper "OCR Page" and "OCR Document"
8. Move your mouse to "OCR Document" and an arrow will show you where to go. Go there while it is saying "OCR Dcoument" and click
9. Wait depending on the size of the document
10. Go to File>Save as... Choose PDF (it will be already selected) Save and enjoy!
Now you can open the file in Preview and select text and copy it.
This may seem a long process but its not. I just wanted to be descriptive. Just be carefull in step 7. I do not why but when I go directly to Edit> it only appears OCR Page. That is why I went through Help>OCR... anyway, you got the idea...

Best practice for breaking a book

I'm making a long technical manual in InDesign, and am facing the issue of how and when breaking it into separate ID Documents collected into an ID Book. In the past, I've never used ID for manuals longer than 40 pages, where I had no problems with the document size. My latest manual was broken this way:
- Front cover
- Front matter/Safety
- ToC
- Main Text
- Back cover
With this longer manual, I will have to split the Main Text into separate parts. My preference would be to avoid excessive fragmentation, to make exporting for translators or other use less time consuming. Also, having less Documents in the Book would make mass replacement (Find/Replace > All Documents) much easier.
So, at the moment I would avoid breaking by chapter, but going for major sections, like in this schema:
- Front cover
- Front matter/Safety
- ToC
- Main Text / Introduction
- Main Text / Basic tasks
- Main Text / Less basic tasks
- Main Text / More or less advanced tasks
- Main Text / Absolutely advanced tasks
- Main Text / Stay away from these tasks
- Main Text / Appendix
- Index
- Back cover
Do you see any issue in breaking into sections instead of separate chapters?

PaoloWhile going on with this work, I would say that it is important to find a balance between a document too big, and too many chapters in a book. A big document will be more difficult to navigate, and will be slower to use. Too many chapters will make changing condition status change and other mass operation slower.
Also, be careful not to create cross-references before breaking the book in separate chapters. There is no apparent way of automatically relinking broken references, that have to be entered again by hand.

Transitions in Photoshop Elements 9
I'm using Photoshop Elements 9 to create a slideshow. I created a simple slideshow in Photoshop and then exported to Premiere Elements to do some additional editing and add audio. To some of the slides I've added text. However, the transitions don't apply to any of the added text. I've used "fade" and "dip to black"...and with both, these transitions don't work with the text, only the photo itself. Thus, the transitions look jerky with the photos fading...but not the text. Looks very poor. Am I doing something wrong or is it a problem of the program? Is there a work-around?
1- I think you might receive a better answer if you ask (about your problem with the transitions timing on the text added to the photos) in the Premiere Elements forum.
2- Since I can't give you a direct answer- I am suggesting a workaround which would require that you redo most of the work of creating this slide show.
Instead of adding text during the slide show creation process, you would make a copy of the photo file for each photo that you are using in this slideshow -- then for each photo use the TEXT Tool of the Photoshop Elements Editor to add the words to each of the copy photo files. Then make the slide show again using the "copy photo file with the text on the photo" for each image where you use added text.
I know my workaround is a significant amount of work. I definitely recommend experimenting with only a few photos to verify that you can get your desired result. You need to take these tests to whatever will be the media format of your slideshow playback.
If the ultimate destination ofr this slideshow video will be a DVD disc, I recommend using a read/write DVD while you are testing and then using a DVD-R for the final result. -
Hi everyone. I make videos that have quite a lot of titling in them -- for a 3-minute video, there might be 4 or 5 text slides, plus a title slide and some end credits.
In terms of ease of editing -- lots of times I want to go back and fiddle with the appearance and timing of the text slides -- would you advise that I make each text item a separate LiveType project, and then import these LiveType projects one-by-one into FCE, placing them individually into the timeline? The other option is to make one LiveType project, using my rough cut video as a background and creating all of the titles in one LiveType project (with big gaps between).
The main issue is that I'd like to set up a workflow that is most painless in terms of editing the title durations and moving them around. I'm new to FCE -- switching over from Vegas -- and have to relearn my habits.

JPThanks, Michel. That was my inclination, especially if I'm going to be revising the timing a lot -- the other way would seem to involve a lot of reimporting the FCE background movie into LiveType. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't overlooking something.

Problem arises when I try to parse / transform the result xml-file. When using oraxsl-command (tried parsers 2.0.2.6 and 2.0.2.9) line or my own code I get error: XML-0221 :(fatal-error)Invalid char in text.
If I open the previously created xml-file and hit space or any other key anywhere in the document and save it again, the second parsing/transformation is succesful. So the problem don't seem to be in the created xml, but somewhere else?!
How can I get the transformations to work?

After installation of OS X 10.8, Mac still restarts in OS X 10.7.
So i installed OS X 10.8 in order to upgrade my MBP 2011 from OS X 10.7. Installation completed, aparently. Then the installer asked to restart the system. So i did. Then it just restarts into to same old 10.7 Lion like nothing ever changed. No error messages. Nothing. What am i missing?

My iPhone4 has 3G but Safari won't load any data, why is this?
My iPhone4 works fine in some places, but whenever I'm in the house and have 3G, safari won't load. I just get a message saying 'safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding' can anyone help me fix this?
Thank youI'm getting the "server stopped responding" error on apps that use 3G (Words with Friends, My Xbox Live, etc) as well as in Safari. Anything that uses the 3G network is timing out. Texts work flawlessly, and emails do arrive and send, though it's very slow.
I spoke with a representative at AT&T. She said there were no reports of tower outages or issues in my area (Dallas, Texas). She had me restore the factory defaults on the network settings, remove and reinstall the SIM card, reset my phone, turn 3G off and back on again, empty the cache and data in Safari, and some other things. None of it fixed it.
If I turn off 3G, and only use the Edge network or WiFi, everything works just fine. But 3G is broken, and has been for me since yesterday
Would love to hear if anyone else has any ideas. -
Page Counter Variable & Captivate 4
Hello - I can't get a simple page counter variable to work that I snagged from Captain Captivate. When I click to preview, the project will not show. I’ve tried F4 and F12, it will not preview the project. When I click F3, it shows the variable text. I’ve downloaded his sample file, this will not preview either. When I delete the variable the previews work. Any ideas on how to solve this problem or is there another option for creating a simple page counter?

You are talking about a slide number? There is a system variable cpInfoCurrentSlide that gives you that number. To have it on all the slides:
insert a Text Caption on the first slide, in which you insert this system variable, you can add other text as well
change the timing of this Text caption to 'for rest of project'
preview: you will have the slide number on each slide.

I have installed DAQmx 8.5 and have been reading the help
and scanning the samples to try and figure these things out.
Specifically MeasAngularPositionBufferedCont_ExtClk, after calling
and getting help, I was finally able to get this sample to work.
In my application, I have my own counter object that I
instantiate and each of the four has its own task, CIChannel and reader. When a
channel is selected, the task is configured, the channel added, the task timing
configured and the task started, when the object is unselected, I dispose of
the task and channel. In my gui I have a timer event and if that channel has
been selected, then I call its getcurrentvalue method, which calls the reader
to get value asynchronously and pumps it to a textbox. This same type of scheme
worked for me with the AIChannels, but trying to get counter angular position,
all I am able to get is error -200284 pretty consistently.
I have matched all my criteria to the working sample, but am
unable to get a value returned. Better yet, after I start my app, even if I don’t
enable one of my channel objects, I can no longer run the sample application.
I have found that after I run my application I can use the
original application (which is using the DAQ Legacy) and initiate a read and
then close the original application and everything is reset aka I can
successfully run the sample application again.
QUESTIONS:
Is there a way to test the start trigger to determine that it
is configured correctly?
I have the task set up for external timing and the clock
works on the sample how can I verify this is working in code?
Any idea of why I would have to go into the original
application in order to get the sample to work again?
Any know of other vb code examples that might relate that
you could point me to?

Is there a way to test the start trigger to determine that it is configured correctly? - Where are you using a start trigger? - I didn't see a mention of it in your description. When troubleshooting triggers I ussually end up checking 3 things. First, I confirm that my physical trigger source is outputting a TTL signal. Second, in Max I do count events on the PFI line I have the signal connected to in order to confirm my connections. Third, I try a simple example - if it will trigger in the example, then it will trigger in my code as long as the call is made with the same settings and configurations.
I have the task set up for external timing and the clock works on the sample how can I verify this is working in code? I would start with the first two steps from above. In your case, PFI39 is an actual enoder signal if I recall correctly. With the error that you receive, -200284, one of the causes of that is when there is not external clock signal (do a quick search on ni.com for "200284" and check out the first link) - is your encoder moving when you take these readings? If there is no clock signal present, then the task will not latch in values. One good way to work around this is to use another one of your counters to generate a pulse train and use that output as a clock signal instead of PFI 39. Also, if you just want to grab single values, you don't have to do a buffered acquisition - you can figure timing for "on demand" and not have to woory about clocked values. Either method should work.
Any idea of why I would have to go into the original application in order to get the sample to work again? That ones a little tougher. If somehow you are leaving the task in an undefined state (not stopping and clearing) it can cause some issues with the next iteration. You may want to try reseting the device at the beginning of your program.
Any know of other vb code examples that might relate that you could point me to? I think you're already looking at a good shipping example, you may want to try modifying that before trying different setups in your application.
