Timer differences across different computers
I have constructed a timer:
Timer timer = new Timer(1,this);and it works fine on most computers I have tried it on (they were all XP), but I am working on it on a new computer (vista 64-bit) and the timer goes way too fast so that i had to make the speed 15. Is this normal or is there something I can do to help this without making two versions of the program?
Most likely your XP box can't respond in 1ms, but your other box can. The XP box is probably responding in closer to 10 ms, which tends to be the clock resoultion on most PCs. I bet on the old computer, if you try 10 or 15, you won't really see a slowdown.
But creating a new timer every 1 or 15 ms. sounds wrong.

Best way to manage date/time variables across different timezones
I have an application that relies heavily on time accuracy. At the moment everything is fine, but soon the system will service customers across multiple timezones. The default behavior of the Date class is to show dates related to the current timezone, is there an easy way (setting) to override this behaviour? The system should show the time entered regardless of the timezone it was entered on.
I use CF 8 for the back-end, and MySQL 5.1 to store data. The front-end is Flex 3/Air 2.
I have looked everywhere, and things like saving dates as strings, or long ints, but if possible, I'd like to find a solution that does not involve dramatic changes to my database/code.Thanks for your reply, UbuntuPenguin,
Your explanation is correct and what I'm trying to find out is an easy way to override that behaviour.
As an example of what the issue is, let's say an event was entered here, in Toronto,ON, at 3pm, if a customer in Arizona sees the time, he/she will call us immediately to inform us that the event it's supposed to happen at 3pm, and not at 12pm (time that they see with the different timezone).
As far as I've seen, the "best" way to approach this issue is by using the transient tag during data transfer and compensate for the time difference in the client timezone vs the selected "system" timezone using getters/setters, but that implies storing the wrong date/time and locking the system into one timezone, and it's just a hack that may bring undesirable consequences in the future. -
How to calculate the % of time difference between different state

The below query returns the follwoign outptut. I need to calculate the % of time period that a specific state ( state ex: open or closed or all report )exists.
I have to find the time difference between the 2 states . How could I do that ?
The first row shows null for the previous state . How could get actual previous state for the first row?

The column 'PREVIOUS_STATE' shows the state before the current state. .In the table in 2nd row in previous_state column there is state_id = 1 (open)which is the state before 'all report state' -
Firefox 9.01 hangs for minutes at a time on three different computers.
I upgraded all three of my machines to 9.01. All XP service pack 3. Before, if there was a stall in the data flow, I could access the other tabs or do other tasks.
Now if the modem hangs, I get a "not responding" from Firefox, which might last for 5 minutes.
I started watching my DSL modem, and realized that the data light was not blinking at all.
It was as though Firefox was not even pinging for data.
For a while, then the modem would go quiet and it would hang again.
I ran visualtrace to see where the blockage was, and as soon as I started the trace, the modem started downloading data, but Firefox does not see it.
The trace shows no blockages.
I used to open 4 or 5 tabs at once in the morning, and read them as they download.
Now, the browser is stalled until they all download, and that might take a long time, because no data is flowing.
If I click on the close button, the browser closes instantly, with no warning about closing tabs.
When I reopen it, it treats the close as a crash and give me the option of which tabs to try to reopen.
I am using Kaspersky but disabling it does not help.
I'm sure you will find the bug soon, and I will keep checking for updates.
I downloaded Chrome to have something to use while I waited, but saw a place where I could download version 8,X of Firefox. I will revert back to it at my office because I need a usable browser. I will try to limp along with 9 on my two personal machines, unless it takes too long.
I have the copy of 8.X on a thumb drive just in case.

I cannot reset my photo stream. The error message "cannot connect to servers" comes up. I have the same problem with syncing contact conflicts. I have logged in on three different computer & networks on three different occasions. What's the deal?

Can anyone tell me the step-by-step instructions for how to Sync my itunes music between two different computer.... one Mac at work and a second at home. I want to bring over all my work music onto my home Mac, some of which is the same but much of it is different.
Are you able to connect the two computers in any way? For instance is the work computer a laptop that you can bring home and network with your personal one? I have a desktop game machine and a laptop I use primarily for school work and web browsing. Currently, I simply add music to one computer, then remember to add it to another. Is there some program or iTunes extension out there to keep the two libraries perfectly synchronized (including album art)? I'm really picky about having my album art set up perfectly...
Thins which are NOT Options
1. Network drive. I don't always have access to the big desktop via network (when I'm at home, in the car, on the road somewhere else).
2. External drive. I don't want to have to tote an external around. I do have a program to fix an external's drive letter (USB Drive Letter Manager, freeware), but I usually leave the external plugged into my desktop for extra storage.
3. iTunes sharing. Same issue as network drive, no guaranteed access.
Am I doomed to have to keep syncing manually? If there are programs out there, I am not necessarily averse to a commercial (i.e. paid) solution, but freeware (NOT Demoware) is preferred.There are a few utilities that can help you sync iTunes across different computers. Time Machine: Backup folder changing size when connected to different computers
Can someone please help me wrap my head around why the size of my Time Machine backup folder changes when connected to different computers? I tried to be as thorough as possible. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.
I made a backup of my one laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) before installing Mavericks. The backup folder size is 258.56 GB and it is on a 1TB WD external. There are no other computers backed up in this folder.
Last night, I tried to copy the backup folder to another 1TB WD external and ran into the “you can’t do that” message. After some researching, I came across articles explaining how Time Machine handles HDs and, in order for me to copy my backup folder, the drive I want to copy the folder to needs to have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected.
Okay, so here is my situation: I have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected and journaling is correct on the drive I want to copy the backup folder to. So I can continue working on my laptop, I want to use a different computer to copy the backup folder from one HD to the other. The problem I’m having is each computer I own is showing me a different backup folder size O.o.
(1) The computer I want to use – a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 (non intel) – is showing a backup folder size of 592.7 MB, but the HD shows there is 258 GB being used. When I drag copy, I only get a 592.7 MB backup folder. For some reason, the backup folder is the only folder acting this way. I compared other folders from the same and different externals and all the sizes match up perfectly no matter the computer they were connected to. How is this possible?
(2) My second option - Mac Pro (early 2009) running 10.9.4 – is showing a 256.15 GB backup folder size. Very close, but not 258.56 GB.
(3) My last option is to use the computer I’m trying to stay away from, the MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. This is the computer I backed up and is showing me the correct folder size = 258.56GB. As I mentioned, I'd like to work on my laptop while copying the backup folder using one of my other computers.
I am able to drag and drop from each computer, but the folder size depends on the computer I’m using. I don’t understand why I can't do a simple drag and drop of a 258 GB folder.
Many thanks!!The directory files that you are seeing are not real. They are links to the actual backup files that are stored in a hidden directory on the drive. If you were to look at the same drive on a pc, you would see the folders and you would a list files that are in the folders but the files would all be 0 byte files and Windows will tell you the file is empty because there is nothing there but a link which Windows does not understand.
So the point is you can't just copy the backupd files. The best solution that I know of (and maybe someone else will chime in) for copying them is to mirror the drive with something like Carbon Copy or some other program.

I accientally synced my iPhone to 2 different computers. Now my older apps are on one computer and new apps are on another. Every time I try to sync all apps on one computer it takes the other apps of and just syncs what is on that computer - Help please
I cannot for the life of me figure this out.What you need to do is connect your phone to iTunes but do not click sync. Go to File at the top and click transfer purchases from phone, that'll put all your apps into iTunes. When it's done transferring, locate your phone on the sidebar and click it. Then find the apps option above the picture of your iphone, you can select which apps you want or don't want on your phone. After selecting your apps then you can sync. Once you do this you should never have your problem anymore.

my iphone 3gs keeps showing the screen with the connect to itunes display, and I've restored it multiple times on different computers, but everytime it finishes restoring, it shows the display again and the computer says it needs to be restored. can anybody help me with this?
it was saying error code 1, i tried the things it said but none of it worked. now it is not showing an error code at all, it just keeps saying it needs to be restored.

I have tried restoring the ipod on different computers, one Vista, and one 7. On both, the restore process seems to complete just as it should, until the point where it says "your IPOD will now restart and will appear in listed devices. This IPOD never restarts. The Apple logo just stays on for approximately 30 seconds and then the screen turns off for five or ten seconds and the logo comes back on, over and over for approximately forty five minutes or so, Occasionally the "connect to USB" will come back on, but that is rare. When that does happen, the I-Tunes recognizes it again as an IPOD that needs to complete the restore process. VERRRRRY AGGRAVATING!!!
Time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. It appears you have a hardware problem.

Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.

I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB. Right now it seems to back up my users all day long. I set their time machine interval to every 5 hours but it still runs all day long and is very slow. Server is on a new Mac Server mini.
AFAIK, there is no user limit.. it is simply a question of the network load. AFP is a fairly clean protocol.. but TM is not.. it does a lot of testing of the backup.. infact your setting of 5hour gap could well make it worse.
I would sort out the clients that are doing 100GB backups to a different backup location.. no matter how fast your network.. 100GB takes time to backup.. and over wireless forever.. it will never end.
I guess some of these clients are on wireless?? I would separate the TM of wireless to those that are wired. No more than 4 or 5 wireless clients to a target device. Otherwise you are saturating your network with backup data. And use 5ghz.. so close by.. it is much faster than 2.4ghz and you will get much better transfer rates.
