Timing of Text

When adding text to an image it continues to show up in the next image, how do I change the timing or length of the text so that it stay just on the image that i added it to? Thanks

I am not a Sceneline workspace oriented person, but here is my take on what you seek.
Do your adjustment for scene and title durations at the level of the horizontal blue bar under the monitor in Sceneline.
Note that I have the first scene selected and its file is shown above in the blue bar (CIMG230.JPG).
Notice the gray tabs at the beginning and end (bottom left, bottom right) and the timecode 00;00;00;00 underneath the blue bar  (left corner).
Move the gray tabs according to increase the duration of the clip. For the first one, just move the right gray clip in to decrease and out to increase the duration of the clip that is selected and showing in the blue bar.
Once you created a title, it will also be found in that bar area as a purple bar when you click the title on screen. Same idea of increasing decreasing duration with those gray tabs.
What the lines in the blue bar, showing the lines where on scene cuts off and another begins.
You can also delete the title by right clicking the purple Title and selecting Delete.
Remember that Edit Menu/Preferences/General and Still Image Default Duration there set the duration for your stills as well as titles.
Please review and then let me know if the details need to be fine tuned.
Thanks.

  • Timing of text box will not appear.  My text boxes stop working on slide 5 and they will not work for the remainder of the slide show.

Timing of text box not working.  I get the first few slides to work and then on slide 5 my text boxes will not appear.  And they do not appear for the rest of the slide show.   Help anyone.

Text caption is timed to appear at 2 seconds, but you have a click box at 0sec. Its duration is very short, which means that I cannot see if there is a pause. I suspect this click box is pausing at the end of its timeline, which is at 0.3secs and the Text caption at 2 seconds will not appear before the user has clicked on that click box. The timeline is the core of Captivate, learn at least how to read it.

If you want the green text caption 'Click on...' to appear right at the beginning of the slide, you have to check its Timing accordion: set it to start at 0 secs instead of 2 secs and extend its duration to the 'rest of the slide'.
I don't know what is in the Group. That group and the HIghlight box will disappear at 3 seconds. Or maybe the action that is triggered by the Clickbox is different from 'Continue'?

  • Timing of text, etc

Okay, have been teaching myself Motion and am wondering why I'm regularly running into timing issues.
    Example 1: Text
I have created a number of text layers in my project and set the timing of some bullet points separately as I used separate layers for them. I had them set to appear 2 seconds apart and to disappear at the same time. This all worked fine until I decided to change the time later on. I did this, but now for some reason Bullet Point 2 appears first, followed by bullet points 1 & 2 at the same time and bullet point 4 last. Why is this happening? I have checked the timing properties of all of them, as well as of the groups they're in. I've even changed the order of the layers, but this made no difference. Everything looks okay...but something's amiss?
    Example 2: Timing in general
Sometimes when I try to change the timing of a layer in the Properties it won't allow me to change it (but why?). I can then change it manually by dragging the slider in the Mini Timeline, but I can't get the slider to go exactly to the individual frame I want. (Is there way to do this?) But usually once I've manually changed it in the slider, I can then go back to the timing properties to change it exactly. Why is this happening? I can't seem to work out the pattern here?
    Thanks for any help!
    Kindest regards,
    Joe.

The beauty of the Timeline is that you can see the relationships between multiple objects whereas the mini timeline is contextual and only shows what is selected.
In this simple example you can see why a text object may not be visible in the canvas even though it shows up at the proper frame and duration in the mini timeline.
Notice that the Group it resides in doesn't extend long enough to contain the "missing" text object. This is an easy situation to find yourself in and it is easy to spot in the Timeline.
Re: your second question, I find it easiest to select the object either in the canvas, layers list or timeline, go to the exact frame you want it to begin and hit " i ". This sets the inpoint of the object at that frame. You can then either do the same for the outpoint by going to your end frame and hitting " o ", or using the inspector and typing in the duration.
You can also drag the end point in the mini timeline or timeline where you'll be shown durration as you drag it in a little tool tip.
Just remember, if you've manipulated the Group like it was in the first picture, you won't see the object in the Canvas until you fix it.

  • Standard for Timing a Text Animation

Hi all, we are struggling with how long to leave a "build,"
or rolling display of text instructions on the screen. It seems
like the Captivate default, when you add a Text box, is about 6
seconds.... does anybody know if there are published guidelines
about how long to leave something on the screen so it doesn't
"FLASH BY," but also doesn't poke along and lose interest?
That said, if I am saying 3 different instructions on one
slide (they change), and have another .30 seconds of fade in/out
time, having a slide stay on screen for 22 or 23 seconds is not
    outrageous, yes??? Thanks.

A good rule of thumb is to set slide time to something short,
like the default 3-4 seconds, then let text-captions or audio
change that time. The way to allow text-captions to set your time
for you is simply to open the "Project" menu and select "Calculate
Caption Timing"; the caption timing will then expand from that 3-4
second default to accommodate the amount of text you have entered
    in the Text-caption.
The audio will always determine slide time, in that the slide
will automatically be expanded to accommodate the length of your
voice-over audio for the slide ... a prime reason why voice over
audio should always be added to the slide, not the objects on the
    slide.
    Thanks - hope this helps.
    EDIT:
P.S. Yes it is outrageous to have a slide run 22 seconds or
    more -
    unless,
unless, the text captions and/or audio
require that amount of time to properly display. If that is
the case, then whatever time, whether 24 seconds or 45 seconds, is
reasonable in the context of events and objects you have placed on
the slide. Does that make sense to you?

  • Text moves when I don't want it to.

I've been putting text in an HDV project with no animation at all and when it is rendered in FCP it moves slightly on the first frame. Usually it fixes itself when I re-render but this time it keeps doing it. Does anyone know how to fix this.
    Vince

And it is costing me money.< </div>
Apple never promised you'd get rich using their software. Motion has many inexcusable quirks but many of us in the motion graphics business have found ways to get around them. Many techniques have been assembled over a long decade of using After Effects or slogging through Apple's lies and broken promises in Motion's earlier versions.
I have no idea what you're building but you might be able to stop spending time and money trying to make everything work in a single project:
Use your main comp as a reference system for timing your text effects and then create your text elements as a separate composition. Nest them together in Motion or bring them into FCP.
Breaking complex projects into separate elements saves tons of processing time and makes revisions fairly easy.

  • Passing dialog text to a shell script command

Hi. Newbie here. I got a good book, will learn this sooner or later.
But right now, I got a problem I can't figure out
I'd like to display a dialog box that requests some text. I'd then like to use that text as the variable for a shell commmand.
Let's say for instance that I want to prompt for the asset tag number of the machine and want the result to end up in the ARD Info 1 field. I've got the first and third line, just don't know how to "place" the captured text:
display dialog "What is this Mac's assett tag number?" default answer ""
do shell script "defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktop Text1 <resultfrom_dialoghere>"
    Anyone?
    Darrin

    You use text returned of:
dialog reply n : Reply record for the ‘display dialog’ command
    properties
button returned (Unicode text, r/o) : name of button chosen (empty if ‘giving up after’ was supplied and dialog timed out)
text returned (Unicode text, r/o) : text entered (present only if ‘default answer’ was supplied)
gave up (boolean, r/o) : Did the dialog time out? (present only if ‘giving up after’ was supplied)
    ex:
set _result to text returned of (display dialog "What is this Mac's assett tag number?" default answer "")
do shell script "defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktop Text1 " & quoted form of _result

  • Help with photos in banner

Can you help me with this problem as I cant seem to work
around it. I have imported three small photos into a banner and
they fade in and out timed to text. Thing is, they move, ie they
seem to pixel jump when they animate. Does anyone know how I stop
this and what I mean by this please?

Sounds like your keyframes may not be sharing identical
coordinates within your tweening. Click each keyframe (for each
photo) and check to see if the X and Y numbers in your Info Panel
change. If they do, change each photo's numbers to match.

  • DVD Studio Pro translated subtitle files (Spanish) - which format?

I have an option to receive one of the following subtitle file formats from a subtitler/translator for DVD Studio Pro:
    - Spruce Text .stl file (text-based file, it will have font size information but you can edit if necessary; color is not specified – you can edit on your end)
    - .stl navigation file with TIFFs or BMP files – the .stl file will contain time code information for each of the TIFFS or BMP (bitmaps). You will not be able to edit the text, font, color, etc. since the TIFFS or BMP files are set graphic images.
    Which is the best path?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Chris,
Both are good or bad - it depends on what you intend to do.
With the text files you're way more flexible, but the quality of the subtitles is a bit below rendered titles and some fonts do either not work with DVDSP or kerning is not that nice. Rendered titles text can't be changed easily except they are 'Layered TIFFs'.
I always would go the text route as it takes less space and is more flexible.
In any case you should have a good subtitle editor as a change of timing or text is no real fun within DVDSP.
I do have an app called TitleExchange which allows to use subtitles both with FCP and DVDSP and you can use FCP to make new timing, text changes, font changes, size changes and view that real time and then send it to DVDSP as an STL text file.
But there are other apps out there which can do something similar.
    Hope this helps

  • Best codec/practice/software for importing Screen Demo Video

    Hello!
I have access to Snagit 8, Microsoft Media Encoder, and Flash
    8. What I'd like to do is use these three programs to capture on
screen interaction with websites via Explorer, import it into Flash
8 and add text and interactivity.
Obviously, I'm trying to do what Captivate was designed to
do, but due to my position outside of a certain department, I am
not allowed to access Captivate (ah, corporate politics).
So, I can capture uncompressed video using Snagit 8 and then
import it into Flash, embedding it into the timeline. I embedding
the video compromises the quality a bit, but it's much easier to
get the timing of text and graphics to the video if it's embedded.
Is there a certain codec available to one of these two
programs that Flash would like more? Is there a certain codec that
Captivate uses to create such crisp video? Would anyone be willing
to share that with me? I would totally go out and get Captivate if
    the boss would let me...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Using Speech Analysis to create subtitles

Does anyone know if its possible to take the results of a Speech Analysis transcription in Premiere Pro and export it as a Subtitle file to be used in Encore?
Mainly, I'm thinking of two possible uses for the Speech Analysis function, that I can use in our workflow.
    1) Creating subtitles with the click of a button.  We have a script for our video, which is narration only - with the help of a reference script, Speech Analysis reproduces the script nearly 100%, and now has timing associated with each word.  Is there any way to take this timing and turn it into something that is useful for subtitle purposes?
    2) Creating a transcription for clients.  If we had an interview, and - without a script - did a Speech Analysis, [which I imagine would have varying amounts of success, but may be good enough] - how can we export that analysis, with some timing for reference, for the client to use.

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this thread is really about the accuracy of the speech-to-text process, but because Frank_xrx asked, I thought I might give my own answer. I've been working with this workflow for the last four weeks now, and have finally decided that it is not possible to do serious work with the tools as they are at the moment.
All the comments from Adobe about the quality of the voice-recording affecting the accuracy of the text analysis are true, but, as others have noted, when your sound-track has spontaneous speech you cannot always separate one voice from the background, nor have recording-studio quality all the time. In such cases the text that is produced will simply not be accurate enough to use, whether you have attached an accurate script or not. Also, this speech analysis process does not like long pauses between speakers (e.g. if you have any action in your video, this will really mess up the timing of text that is produced).
However, above and beyond all this, the main flaw in the whole process, from my point of view, is that even with a word-perfect script typed into Story, attached to video clips in On Location, and then "speech-analyzed" in Premiere... if the resulting text has omissions or mistakes, there is almost nothing you can do to edit them. OK, I know there is an editing facility but it is a sham. If you add missing words into the text, then these words appear in the text, but they never get a time stamp, so they never appear in the exported xml-file, and they can never be used to "go to" a particular point in the video. If, like me, you want to find out where and how many times certain words are used in your video, then none of these newly added words will be found! Also, if you look closely, you'll find that you cannot add anything before the first word of the analyzed text that is produced in Premiere, nor can you add anything after the last word of that text. It is just not possible (right click on the first and last words to see the greyed out items). I've had several instances where the first speaker in a scene is completely missed out of the analyzed text, and also, in my experience, the analysis process always (i.e. always) misses off the last word in each scene, regardless of sound-track quality or the attachment of a full script. When these things happen this is a major problem for me. For me, the feature of searching for and playing back individual words or phrases in a video was the main attraction of the Production Premium Suite; this was why I bought it. I'm trying to produce spoken and visual "concordances", as a step up from the text-only versions now available (sorry if that's a bit esoteric).
I know that a lot of editing can be done to the analyzed text if you use After Effects. And this is great if you want to show subtitles. But anything you add, or change in AE is still beyond the reach of the xml files exported by Premiere or Encore, so, again, no changes you make in AE will be searchable (or findable) in the final video. There is another route to producing a text-searchable video, which involves putting physical cue points into the video whilst in AE, and then writing a Flash program to use those cue points, instead of using the xml-file data. I haven't tried that yet, as I kept on hoping that the (frequently) advertised speech-to-text workflow would actually work. But after four, increasingly frustrating weeks I've given up on it, simply because I can't get even a small proof-of-concept project to work exactly as advertised. Starting a serious project, with the current tools, would be unwise.
I realize that there must be work-arounds for some of the problems, but at the price of this suite (even more expensive for those of us who don't live in the US), I feel that things should work as advertised. This is not Version 1.0 from a start up company.
So, I hope this wasn't too verbose. I have specific requirements of the speech-to-text workflow which I've tried to explain above. If your requirements are not the same, then maybe you can get away with the work-arounds.. and... this thread was originally about subtitles, and there is some hope for those, using AE. I thought I'd still write this, though, as I need a bit of an outlet for all these weeks of frustration :o)

  • Easy ? could not figure this one

I bought an AE template stretched it from the 5 seconds it is to the 16 seconds I needed Well first I stretched to 13 sec played around with it and then to 16 sec.
Now the Final Renders are not stretched to import into Prem Pro..
So I import the Scene file instead.
Funny thing here. I timed the text with the beats of the music, looks good in text edit area, then click over to view in the Scene tab and the music is stretched and not at the same speed.
So I removed music figuring the stretch messed with it. Added a new Mp3 track (Same tune) to the Scene (Drag and drop) same deal. The tempo is slowed down. In Scene tab but good in
    the Text tab/editor
Text and Mp3 look, and are timed right..Under text edit tab, then I pop over to scene tab to see the whole compilation out of time?
I removed the Mp3 and then imported into Prem Pro figuring I could just add the Mp3 there, as there is an overlap or transition for my movie and the title anyways....
Yet, the exported scene is still outta wack or not in sync with music. After adding the music I timed it to in AE.... The Text edit area and the Mp3 in AE are previewing as in sync but
not in the Scene tab of AE nor in Prem Pro's timeline.
Another ? is the Final Renders that come with an AE template 720 or 1080 are those just rendered scene files re-imported into AE? Funny how when I make an adjustment to the text it shows the changes in the rendered 720 and 1080 file it came with although the 1080 file dropped the extra 3 seconds I added to the time line I ultimately needed as I had originally stretched it only to 13 sec but found 16 fit better. I tried to Render and re-import but got an error so I skipped that and then went on to just use the scene file in PP...
    Thoughts?

More helpful would be a shot of the template with all layers and all keyframes exposed. Just select all layers in the template and press u.
If you want to simply nest your template in another comp don't use time stretch. Set the comp settings to 16 seconds then click on the nested comp and select Layer>Time>enable time remapping and drag the last keyframe generated to the end of the time line. Now things should be the right length. I can't guarantee however that the animation will be smooth because I don't know what's in the template comp.
On your timeline showing 1080, that's only the name of the active composition. There's no way of telling what the comp settings are unless you show us the comp settings or select the comp in the Project Panel so we can see the comp info.
If I were going to use a template for a project I would follow these steps:
Open the template and immideatly save the project under a different name.
Open up the comps and the pre-comps and check the comp settings using Cmnd/Ctrl + k
Adjust the duration of the comps to suit my requirements.
Make sure the comp size matches my output requirements. If not use File>Scripts>Scale Composition to change the comp size to my project specifications. (total time so far is about 5 minutes)
Start with the Final or Main comp, with all layers or none of the layers selected press the U key to reveal all keyframes.
With the keyframes visible start at the bottom right corner of the timeline and marquis select all visible keyframes in the composition. They all should be yellow.
I'd then select the last keyframe in the stack and hold down the Alt/Option key and drag the farthest right keyframe to the new end point for the animation. This will uniformly scale the timing of all the animation. If the layers do not extend to the last keyframe then I'd go to the last keyframe for each layer and set a new out point.
Repeat the process for the pre-comps. and run a quick 1/4 rez or less ram preview to check timing.
If everything is OK I've now spent 10, maybe 15 minutes on the project. If there are problems I'd look for them and fix them. I've never seen a template that was so complex that other change timing problems couldn't be fixed with a click or two.
Now, and only now, would I replace the place holders with my footage and type, make the color adjustments, and finalize the project for render.
The whole process may take about 15 to 20 minutes for most templates. The techniques for making timing adjustments for keyframes are documented in the help files. You can find the reference by typing editing keyframes in the Help Search Field. You will find this info.
Here's what a timeline looks like just before I click on the bottom right keyframe and Alt/Option drag it to a new ending time.

  • How can I create Airport Departures Board using Motion 5 ?

I'd like to create an Airport Departures Board using Motion 5. Can anybody give any advice please ?
    Tks

    mmm.... yeah....
Got Motion 4? A couple of the LiveFonts in M4 or LiveType can create that effect easily, but all that is gone in Motion 5.
In Motion 5, you have to basically fake it.
I'd like to offer this approach as the easiest to implement.
Add a Camera (switch project to 3D).
Create a line of text. (In the inspector, Text > Format > Advanced Formatting, check All Caps and set All Caps size to 100%)
Pick a Monospace font (Monaco, Courier, Andale, Menlo - or find and install one that looks more like you want.)
To the line of text, add Behaviors > Text Energetic > Flip In (you can work on Flip out afterwards - same basic steps)
To the Behavior, use the Parameter > Remove button to remove Face > Blur and Outline > Blur (or just set both to 0%)
Twirl down the Rotation and set the X Rotation to -360 (instead of the default 360 - it's flipping the wrong direction for what you want)
[Optional: Parameter > Add  >  Format > Character Offset -- set it to about 6 -- this will "randomize" the characters as they animate "in"]
Set the playhead to about half way through the animation so you can see some flipping characters
Go to the Text > Layout pane in the inspector
Under Behavior Controls, Anchor Point - click on the Position disclosure triangle and adjust the Y value up until the flipping characters line up to the midpoint of the character.
    Play.
With the Flip In behavior selected in the Layers list, adjust the end point to adjust the speed (optional).
You can combine this with Flip Out and timing other text overlaid at the same location to create in/out transitions between texts (old text Flips Out while new text Flips In...).
Build a background to create the "board" with outlines and shading. Line up the texts in space so that they just overlay the background graphic (use Position > Z parameter or set up the graphics to be just below the text in the layer list. In a 3D project, the letters will rotate "through" the solid background.)
At this point, I'll have to leave the rest up to you.  You'll be going for an optical illusion basically. If it animates quickly enough, I doubt most people would notice the difference.

  • Marker Keys Expression, how about the last key

Hi, if you have dabbled in expressions you probably have already found how nifty the expression
thisLayer.marker.nearestKey(time);   is. I first used it to put XMP metadata on the screen.
I also tend to use it for changing text instead of the source property since it's easy to see the text,
where it's at and so forth.
I've read the manual, but haven't found anything like:
    thisLayer.marker.lastKey(time);
What I would like is for whatever property I am using from the last keyframe to remain the value until it reaches
    the next keyframe.
Anyone know how that might be done?

Mylenium, You and your site have been more than helpful to me. It's people like you that make any community worth it's while.
Adobe should put a larger than life statue of you in the center of San Jose, or at least give you like free vacations to hawaii or something :-)
If you are ever in my neck of the woods I'm buying
I have a project I am supposed to turn over to other studios so they can use it as a template. Rather than have them dig around through layers to change titles and stuff, I am putting all the keyframes into a configuration composition and having all the other layers take their cues from it.  Never tried to do anything like that before but it's actually looking like a nice solution and an easy way to set up timing and text through all the compositions just by opening one and editing. I think the extra work and the extra expressions will pay off as the project gets used over and over.
Again Thanks, can't wait to get into the studio monday and try this out.

  • Text Caption Timing Options Changing after an Edit

I am trying to highlight a matrix in four seperate slides. I
made my text caption box and highlight box on one slide and copied
and pasted for the next three. When I went in to edit the text in
the 3 copied captions, the timing options changed on me. For
example, on one I set the timing to 10 seconds and when I tested I
realized it was showing for only about 3. I have no idea why this
changed. I found an old post from someone and the suggestion was to
uncheck some "calculate timing" box. I am using Captivate 3 and
have found no such box to uncheck. Any help would be wonderful!
    Thanks,
    Kim

Hi Kim and welcome to our community
Click the Project menu and see if you have a check mark
beside the option "Calculate Caption Timing". I'm guessing you do.
DE-select it and the timing should be left alone.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Using Adobe Captivate 6, how can I replicate the PPt text animations wherein I can float in timed?

Using Adobe Captivate version 6.0, I want to be able to do what I always could in PowerPoint - in a bulleted list, cause each bullet to float (or other animation) into place, establish a timing for each line.

To do this in Captivate, you need each bullet to be a separate text caption. You can then apply fly-in effects and time them to coincide with the voiceover.  There's no way to make the bullets fly separately in if they are all in the same text caption.
