Tip for PrP editors cutting Red

Red Cine-X Pro is great for one lights and more. PrP users benefit by not needing to CC Red clips while cutting, which reduces need for lots of horsepower. Its so good "Storm" made by The Foundry (a competing product) has been discontinued. And its FREE!

That's good to know. Thanks for sharing.

  • Help for Avid Editor: Cutting In defaults to Canvas

When I cut into a timeline from the Preview window, FCP automatically jumps to the Canvas(Record) window, so that I have to hit Q to switch back to Preview window to keep watching dailies.
Is there an option to leave the focus/control in the Preview window? (what Avid does).
It is only 1 extra keystroke, but it's one keystroke I have to hit thousands of times a day.
It could be easily solved with a check box in the preferences somewhere. (Feature request if it isn't already there)

Don't know how much this helps, but by default the "Q" key toggles between the canvas and the viewer. That may be a quicker way than clicking.

  • Transition treasure box for PrP (soon)

There have been several discussions recently regarding the lack of good transitions for PrP. As a working editor I need a variety of tools just in case that marketing video or music video needs a different kind of transition just to spice things up. The Avid DS excelled at this by using a node structure to allow you to mix and match every filter in the box to create something unique and different when that need arose (i.e. clients asking  for it).
I spent my share of Google time researching this and all I found was limited and weak (in the sense of programming controls).
Well, last Friday I stumbled upon a product that I prematurely dismissed many months ago. Boy was I wrong.
Boris Red will soon release Red 5 for Mac (64 bits). It does many things I dont need since After Effects is my go to motion graphics software. But it does one major thing that I see as an answer to the prayers of editors like me... it allows you to make customized transitions or to use their vast library and alter as needed. It has lots of things from Continuum as well as the AE library know as Final Effects complete. You can stack them, matte them, blend them as you choose. The degree of control rivals that of Sapphire and Avid DS. It renders fast and gives PrP editors more choices when they want it. It should be released soon. I now feel like I have what I need to make just about every client happy. I tend to do more commercial, marketing and corporate communication projects which tend to need a little more glitz then narratives or docs. I feel like I have discovered a real treasure.

That's good to know. Thanks for sharing.

  • Quick Tips For Speed Your Digital Publishing WorkFlow

I think that we have a great problem with our Digital Publishing Workflow's speed . I talk about, for example, of set up State Objets Sliedshows for multiple page, and I mean, there are another similar examples about that. Do you know if does exist more tips for speed our workflow in InDesign for Digital Publishing Output?
    Thanks a lot!
    Sorry for my bad english.
    Bye!
    Marco Toscano

Muito abrigado my friend!  Seriously thanks a million, but I was curious to know about my situation regarding replacing my first shot multiple times... In another words there's a clip already in the storyline which won't allow me to replace edit since it just moves out of the way.  Would you just go back into the browser and add the original selection to the first clip?  Because I kept having to move my connected music and solid I just gave up and would wait until the end to add the music and solid (I add the solid to give the background a different color when I want to create the letterbox effect).
I just watched a music video tutorial where someone created a 3 minute solid, made like a hundred cuts with the blade tool and manually dragged each clip from his browser to replace from start for each of those cuts in the solid...
What is your workflow for music-based edits?  Do you place the song in the primary story line and use the video as connected clips?  Do you use a solid or gap clip and dissect it with cuts and replace the segments with clips? I really hate not being able to add markers to the timeline and must make those marks on a clip/generator/music track of some kind.  Also if you have a project that has the same settings with fps, crop size, solid as a background is there a way to make template so I don't have to do that each and every time?
    Thanks again my friend!!!

  • What's the best Mac for running Final Cut Pro X?

Title says it all. What's the best Mac for running Final Cut Pro X? I'm not looking to make a feature length hollywood film. But I'd like to be able to edit video without lag.

Yes. Begin with the fastest processor / graphics card / and as much RAM as you can afford. (As all three will become obsolete over time.)
I started from scratch. I have a 27-inch iMac with a 3.4 G Intel Core i7. (currently the fastest processor for an iMac) I also ordered the best graphics card--AMD Ratheon HD. I ordered 16G of RAM, but recently added more RAM to equal 24G. (OWC makes good after-market RAM for iMACs.)
Last, I ordered a flash drive / SATA hard drive combo.  (250G on flash / ITB on SATA). The OS and all of my applications run off the flash drive. (for fast start up!)
I put all of my media and FCP projects onto the SATA hard drive.
Now, I had the option to order a 2TB SATA. But, I realized I can always buy more external storage as I edit more and more projects. ALSO! FCPX is GREAT when it comes to editing projects on external drives! I can segregate an entire project and its media files onto a removeable drive. I simply launch FCPX, plug in the drive and--poof!--I'm ready to edit. It sees the project and the media right away. When I'm done editing, I can then send this drive to another editor (also using FCPX) or attach it to my MacBook if I want to edit the same project in the field.
This has worked for me. I wish you luck.

  • Any tips for novel writing in Pages?

I am determined to finish my next novel in Pages. I can't take the weight of Word any more. Does anyone have any tips for using Pages in this way, producing a manuscript that will probably run to 130k words in the end? I have tried everything in this field on OS X, from Mellel to Nisus, Ulysses and Copywrite, and I think Pages suits me best.
What I have discovered so far...
    Good points
    Reliability
    Ease of use
    Speed
The fantastic search and I think unique show search feature which is now my primary way of navigating the manuscript.
    Could be better
    No keyboard shortcuts for styles
It's simpler to number chapters manually than mess around with lists
The word count is awkward to get at
No outlining or easy navigation by chapters
Occasionally I get red underline spelling errors for words that are spelled correctly. This goes away if I right click and may be due to hyphenation though that is turned off for the document.
    G5 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Bodsham,
I started my novel with Nisus, switched to CopyWrite, then wrote the bulk of it with Pages. All in all, using Pages was a terrific experience. But the use of a word processor for a novelist is a very, very personal and subjective thing.
Things a novelist might like about Pages
    - What you see on the screen is beautiful -- Pages renders text extremely well
    - The system for defining styles is excellent. When I first fired up Pages 1.0, it took me 15 minutes to make a complete manuscript template, including headers
    - It's very stable. Unlike Nisus, which was a nightmare (adding blank pages and weird indents all through the document), Pages behaves itself very well
    - Plays nice with Word. I'm able to open and export Word docs very successfully
    - Brilliant search feature; provides a list of word occurances, then lets you click on them
    - Bookmark feature lets you easily jump from chapter to chapter
Things a novelist might not like about Pages
    - A few people report a typing lag. If you experience it, it's a significant problem
    - Bookmarks, while excellent, won't permanently sort alphabetically -- only numerically. Every time I open my document, my bookmarked list of chapters is sorted incorrectly. Not a big deal; just a minor annoyance
    - Very mouse-intensive program. Not a huge issue for a novelist since we mostly just hit a carriage return; not a lot of styles in a text-based manuscript
    - Gobbles up a lot of screen real estate. In order to have various inspectors and panes open, it's good to have a larger monitor, otherwise you'll find things sitting on top of your text
I'm sure there are many more strengths and weaknesses, but that'll get you started. By the way, you can download Devon Technologies' excellent and free Word Services that'll add a lot of very useful features (including word count) to your services menu. Get it at http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/index.html

  • Any Tips for editing Live Event 2 camera shoot?

I need to quickly edit a 2 DV camera recording of a live multi-scene performance (duration of 90 minutes), with audio additionally recorded on a good quality remote mic.
I have used FCE for some time, but not for several months. I have managed to forget many of the lessons learnt through trial and error, as well as by reading Tom wolsky's FCE Editing Workshop! So shortcut tips would be very helpful.
I am also using FCE 3.5 for the first time after my upgrade.
    1
I want to make a safety copy of the synced rushes, as well as keeping the original camera sound recording as a back-up guide track.
    2
I am worried about making sure I am working with Master clips, so that when I edit I don't mess up any of the source material. I am a little confused.
    3
I would appreciate anyone with any suggestions or tips for the best edit process, and any warnings or other guidance. Speed is of essence. (ie there is no budget).
    4
I am considering making separate sequences for each scene (14 scenes in all of varying length and complexity). Is this advisable rather than creating one programme length sequence?
    5
I am considering making the audio into one mono track for simplicity, as the auditorium acoustics have "mixed up" the sound, with little stereo separation. Should I then duplicate the track to build the sound quality at the end?
Any other general Tips always welcome.
Thank you in advance. I appreciate all the unsung contributors to this group.
    Freesh

I am a pretty good source for basic sound info - you can email me if you like
    [email protected]
you are right about the link - I am sorry - i checked the website before I typed the link in too! A blond moment
A low shelf filter - as included in FCE and soundtrack cuts the bottom off a soundmix. 20hz is a low frequency - not many speaker systems can reproduce this frequency, and most speaker systems can't even get to 40hz - even you high fi system or speakers which say they may be able too present sound for 20hz to 20khz - well unless you have spent an aweful lot of money and have a sub bass speaker the size of a car probably may only go down to 40hz, and the production of any 20hz sounds is more likely a feeling - a psychoacousticc effect. The thing about cutting off the bass is that practically it can make the recording sound less muddy, and you can make the recording sound louder. Most recordings for CD play have the bass started to roll of pretty heavily at 40hz and nothing present at 20hz... theirs this thing called narquist theory which talks about frequency responce - but it is this math heavy thing - so basically cut out a good amount of the sub bass. A low shelf filter does this and If you want to be conservative cut below 20hz, and if you want to be real give it a good cut below 35hz.
Now I was sure that their was a mac version of that monofilter that I saw on the web page - I have a PC and do most of my audio work on a PC as that is what I have used the most. If you can get the mono filter work it will make the bottom end sound much better - more natural - less clicky and perhaps abnoxious.... those of us who like trip hop are always striving to get a nice warm bass that represents itself well on a range of speakers. something smooth - it is a bit of a trick - monofilter is one of those tricks.
If you put the bass in mono (below 250hz ish) and keep the phase right speakers find it easier to work with the signal. Also stereo bass is not something that translates well on speakers... Bass tends to just flood the room where as the more mid and trebbly sounds give the audio a feeling of distance and space and left and right. The monofilter has a bass compression/limiting and phase correction built itno it, and implimented on a slider called 'trim'. Listen to your recording on good speakers and probably just bring the trim down a touch (my guess)... as complex as it sounds the monofilter is very easy to use, and is super clever. Now I thought that nugen had a mac audio unit plugin - that is a pity if they don't and kind of makes my advice seem irelevant unless you are prepared to download an application that can use VST's.
    Amy
be careful using an eq as most eq's disrupt the phase of the signal and can reek havok on live recordings. but do give it a low shelf filter at least below -20 but probably below -40 to -80 for practicalitys sake
This is a bit over my head, I am afraid. Do you know a source of basic info for sound recording to help explain such things? It could be a book or an online resource?
lol, what i meant was 20hz or 40 too 80hz - their is a low shelf filter in soundtrack that works well - I am talking about cutting off the low frequency bits of the recording here. Nugen audio has a little pdf that comes out with the monofilter talking about bass signals... I know it is geared towards music and perhaps music that you want to have a nice bass feel - however it translates to the real world too - You will be suprised at how great your audio will sound if you cut off a chunk of the sub bass, and put the low bass in mono.
then you could look at exciting the signal - but that is another story....

  • Starting a documentary, using PPro for the 1st time, any pro tips for workflow?

I'm a documentary director and editor that is making the big switch for my next project.  For some background, I'm coming from the world of FCP 7 working with p2 DVCpro footage off a Panasonic HPX camera,  multiple editors who each have separate systems with duplicates of media to work from, and usually finish using Color, outputting to HDCAM (SR if necessary).
For the new project the two editors will be working on Mac Pro Towers, OS 10.6.8, Dual Core 3Ghz Intel, 9GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5770. The towers were bought in late 2007, so we can't upgrade to Mountain Lion because our chipset is barely outdated.
We will be shooting the entirety of the doc on c300s, and eventually c100s.
One of the main attractions for our switch is that the c300 footage drops in Premiere natively, and we will not need to duplicate our storage space to create 422 Pro Res clips.
Is this a mistake?  Does the long GOP format of the canon's mpeg format prove too incompatible for multiclipping, logging, cutting, and then color correct?
What do I need to do to ensure that each editor can open each other's project files as seamlessly as possible? How do we avoid waiting for the audio to load in each time we pass project files back and forth?
Because logging and organization are so important to us with the amount of footage we use, are there any bugs I should know of that delete markers or screw up the sync of multiclips?
Thanks in advance for the advice and discussing topics that I'm sure have been covered here many times before.
I look forward to all of your thoughts.
    Best,
    Clay

    Try doing a hard reset on the phone;
    1. Hold Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time;
    2. Wait for the Apple logo to appear (ignore the slide to Power Off option)
    3. Let go of the buttons when you see Apple on the screen
    4. Allow iPhone to reboot; and try to open the apps again.
If that doesn't work; you will have to try a restore in iTunes; and then sync the apps back the phone after the restore.

  • Tips for a workflow program

    Hi all!
As always I post here when I feel I need a good advice. Today at work my boss told some of us that we need some kind of workflow editor, since all of our projects to date are requiring it and he would like to "automatize" some of the process.
As of now, all the workflow is done through databases. For example in any web app first we make a login form and based in the user/pass decide what components appear at the menu or what page gets displayed next.
What we want to do is a system to define the workflow for different users, so roles could be created and every role can have different workflows through the assets (in this case web pages only). Once all the paths have been laid out, based in your current role the system would validate your request of a given page.
I started to google around for clues in order to get an idea of such a system and came up with Enhydra Shark workflow server. Looking the documentation it seems it's similar of what we need. It would be great to deploy such a tool since it's pure Java, open source and it has a graphical workflow editor written in java also.
The problem is that it seems something like overkill for the problem we are trying to solve. Our needs only include permissions of different people accesing a web app which is currently done with databases.
Does our problem justify the deployment of a tool like Shark server? could a simple app be done in like 3 or 4 days to address our needs (with 3 ppl working on it) ?? Do you have any ideas of how such a system would work ??
Thanks a lot for any pointers on these questions.
btw the url for Enhydra Shark server is: http://shark.objectweb.org/

    Lynda,
are there any tips for a beginner?
First tip is to forget that you are a beginner. This will allow you to:
Start imagining your first site and looking round at other sites in a relaxed way to decide how you wish it to appear and work (so you and the visitors are happy), how you can make it unique (so it will stand out and be (re)visited (by) more).
When you have a strong image of your first site, you may start working on it and decide the tools to serve that purpose, without having been trapped unnecessarily in what you have seen elsewhere and in the predominant uses and seeming limitations of the tools.
I hope this is not too far out.
Padding/Margin are just minor tools to adapt to the overall size/size of the contents, in other words, whether you work from the element boundary in/out (in the former case it only takes up its own space as specified, in the latter it takes up its own space and the margin.

  • Tips for DPS publishing for display on ipad & widescreen TVs

Im looking into the use of ipad as a presentation controller, for connection to an HD TV (using HDMI?, apple TV? ideas?) for display.
At the moment Ive designed folios horizontal at 768x1024 for ipad screen but should I instead be designing them at 1080 tall since the TV display for my audience is the priority?
If I do that what happens to the ipad screen during display? does it cut off the edges? or squeeze to fit? or does it display at all?
Ideally I would like the TV screen to display my folio full screen (without any black bars) but still be able to control, swipe and control interactivity from the ipad.
Anyone have experience and tips for setting this up?
    thanks

This question is related to AirPlay, not dps.
When you mirror your iPad to an apple tv the output is always the same in 4:3 aspect ratio. This is for anything: the home screen, the web, games, magazines. Only videos might play in full screen on the apple tv.

    lGraphic.setBackground(Color.RED);
    lGraphic.clearRect((int) lx, (int) ly, (int) lw + 1, (int) lh + 1);

so now i want to set a tool tip for this lGraphic Object.
can any body please post answer for this proble.
if you will post in advance it will help me a lot.

so now i want to set a tool tip for this lGraphic Object.Your concepts are all wrong. Read the API for java.awt.Graphics and try to understand that a Graphics object is akin to a paintbrush: it has methods to draw whatever is to be drawn. The painting is not the brush, the brush does the painting.
To obtain a custom tooltip at certain locations within a JComponent, I think the easiest way is to override getToolTipText(MouseEvent me). The method can return null for locations where a tooltip is not to be shown.

  • Since backing up my iPad air and installing IOS 8.1.2 the screen doesn't move between landscape or portrait when I turn it. Any tips for getting it to do so?

Since backing up my iPad air and installing IOS 8.1.2 the screen only shows the portrait view and won't change to landscape view when I turn the device. Any tips for getting back both views?

If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that didn't work, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the control center and the lock icon is in the row of icons at the top all the way to the right.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the button

  • I have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

i have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

You just need a powered hub.. if you already use one then fine.
Plug in just about any external hard disk will work fine. Format has to be readable by the TC.. ie fat32.. or much better HFS+.. plug it into a Mac to prepare the drive.
Pick whatever size suits.. nowadays 2TB are most economical.
WD, Seagate have goobled up all the minor players.. so pick one.
Whatever suits your budget and asthetics.
NOTE.. The USB on the TC is fine for printers.. IMHO it is the wrong way to go with USB disks.. use the internal disk of the TC.. USB is less than half the native speed plugged into a Mac.. TC to USB is slow.. far slower than internal drive.. or using external drive as external.

  • Tips for blue screen (BSOD) errors with Windows Vista and Intel Turbo Memory on X61/X61s

Important note: The symptoms and solutions described below address only a small subset of the possible causes for blue screen errors, aka BSOD.
This information can help address blue screen errors specifically
related to Turbo Memory, but may not solve errors related to other
issues. Please read through the instructions completely, make sure they
apply to your system, and after attempting the solutions please post
back with your feedback for the community.
Some users may experience random blue screen errors with ThinkPad
systems running Windows Vista with Intel Turbo Memory hardware. These
blue screens may occur during normal usage on the system or they may
occur when booting into Windows Vista. Blue screens related to the
Intel Turbo Memory hardware may reference a stop code of 8086 with
    memory address locations of {0, 0, 0, 0}.
There are two main steps that you can take to help resolve blue screen issues related to Intel Turbo Memory.
Step 1: Update Intel Turbo Memory Driver
If the driver version is before version 1.0.1.1004-7.0.3.1001, please
    update to this version.
To determine what version of the Intel Turbo Memory driver is installed:
    1.    Click Start, then click Control Panel.
    2.    Click System and Maintenance.
    3.    Click System.
    4.    Click Device Manager.
    5.    Expand the Storage controllers category.
    6.    Double-click Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip.
    7.    Click the Driver tab. Then you will see the driver version (for example, 1.0.1.1004).
The new driver and installation instructions can be found here.
Note: The Intel Matrix Storage Driver is updated with this package.
    Step 2: BIOS version
If your BIOS version is older than those listed below, please update to the version listed.
How to check your BIOS version:
    Turn off the system.
    Turn on the system.
While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
    The
BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor
password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the
    password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
    Turn off the system.
    System BIOS versions:
    ThinkPad X61 or X61s - BIOS version 1.06 (7NET25WW)
    Please
remember that these updates do not solve every possible system blue
screen, but they do resolve several problems related to the Intel Turbo
    Memory driver.

    Dear Tim,
First off, many thanks for the tips for resolving BSOD with Vista + Turbo Memory on X61.  I've been suffering from this BSOD for countless times since I bought in my X61 7673-CW9 in April 2008.
Even prior to having the pleasure to visit this wonderful forum, I followed both steps as indicated, and updated my Intel Turbo Memory driver to 1.5.0.1013 and my BIOS to 7NETB4WW (2.14).  However, the BSOD recurrs.
For the past two months, I've recovered my system to factory default settings using Rescue and Recovery for over twenty times, each time with the latest Intel Turbo Memory driver and BIOS.  Notwithstanding that, BSOD recurrs.
During these painful experiences, I tried two options: 1) making my X61 up-to-date by using System Update and Windows Update (including Vista SP1 or excluding Vista SP1); 2) keeping my X61 the status as factory default (i.e. without updating through either System Update or Windows Update (the automatic/scheduled update function of both is turned off)).  In either case, BSOD recurrs.
I'm 100% positive that the BSOD does not arise from any hardware or software/firmware I install.  I never install any hardware (e.g. RAM).  And, it is not caused by any software/firmware I install: the clear and unequivocal evidence is that at one time,I encountered BSOD while having restored back to factory setting and booting for the first time.
I live in Taiwan, and I seldom heard this BSOD here.  All of my friends (as most of Taiwan residents) using X61 operate in Traditional Chinese environment, whereas I operate in English environment.  In Taiwan, when booting for the first time after purchase/recovery, the Windows Vista Business system provides for lanuage choice (Traditional Chinese or English), and, once chosen, the language cannot be altered later on (unless, of course, the system is restored back to factory default settings).
My system specs are the same as the day I purchased it and are listed below (as I'm not sure if my machine type X61 7673-CW9 is applicable outside Taiwan):
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.4GHz
    Memory: 1.00 G.B.
    System: Windows Vista Business (32-bit)
    Hard Drive: 160 G.B. @ 7,200 r.p.m.
And, of course, with Intel Turbo Memory 1 G.B.
I contacted the Lenovo support staff here in Taiwan for countless times, but they seem to be clueless.  I learned that some friends at this forum downgraded their OS back to Windows XP, but I chose not to.  The reason is simple: my purchase price for X61 7673-CW9 includes the Intel Turbo Memory, which cannot function under Windows XP (at least so far).
Therefore, I just wish to share my experience here and perhaps I can get some advice from you and other friends here.  Any advice will be tremendously and enormously appreciated.
