TIPS/Help--Vocal Mixes

I am having a horrible time trying to tame my vocals. I am using Shure SM7 with Apogee Duet into iMac 24". I have all my levels crazy low, I'm recording at like -18db to -12 db. In that range, I'm leaving tons of headroom. I usually apply compression with the Logic Compressor, but I am having bad results. I have to apply a crapload of compression to tame the louder parts, There is such a crazy amount of dynamic range that it is hard to mix. I know I can keep my voice in check volume wise to help those real loud parts from being so loud, but it affects my delivery if I try to do that. I just want to deliver it how ever I want, loud, quiet whatever, and be able to do some post processing to bring all the levels together. I turn the volume up so that the quiet parts are loud enough, and then I have to compress the **** out of the audio to keep the loud parts from being too much. Also, a big problem seems to be the highs on my voice cutting through real bad, Like in the 2.5-5 range. It sounds real harsh and shrill at times, which I try to compress out, cuz it seems louder but it's just the EQ levels, so I drop the EQ in that range, but then my **** is too muffled, I hate mixing.

Multipressor is another good option (though it's easy to get lost if you're inexperienced). Dynamic EQ is another... You may also want to take a look at Waves Vocal rider if automation drives you crazy!

It's always good to try as many mics as you can, but I see no reason why you shouldn't obtain good results with an SM7B & Duet... especially if you're doing hip hop. Make sure you're using a mic stand though (it's common not to in hip hop!) & maybe try suspending the mic from above (Jay-Z style). Also pay some attention to the acoustics of where you're placing the mic; try & avoid dead center of a room, & corners of a room. (Hanging a heavy blanket behind the vocalist can also help).
I think perhaps you're confusing windshields with pop shields. Pop shields are more commonly used with condenser mics, but as I said, I've found benefits with dynamic mics. Pop shields are designed to tame heavy bursts of air from certain syllables (most commonly 'p's & 't's). They basically clip on to your mic stand, about 6" in front of the mic. They're inexpensive, but you can make your own (many people just used a coat-hanger & pair of nylon stockings, but there's some more elegant solutions below).

  • Follow Up...Vocal Mixing Approach

I've been kicking around possibilities in a different thread with some very helpful people
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2386425&tstart=0
Now, I'd like to implement what AT THIS POINT, I think may be my best way to approach the issue of getting my vocal mixes good.
First, I am going to go back to using my mic the way I had in previous recordings. That is, using the large windshield that came with my SM7, that helped with a lot of plosives etc. Also, I will apply the bass roll off and NOT the presence boost. Presence boost seemed to give too harsh highs. I can EQ later if need be. Flat will be easier to start with. As far as pre tracking, this is about all i can do, since I know my recording levels and all are good, and i don't have any other equipment besides the SM7 and the DUET.
Next, I would like to know y'alls take on "NORMALIZE". I usually have not ever normalized my vocal tracks. The last one I had issues with a lot, I actually DID normalize, So, perhaps I WON'T in the future. I'm gonna open up a meter for monitoring. Prolly the Multimeter. I'm going to go in and for the sake of time, only do some manual edits to the volume envelope for the REAL bad guys, those that stand out clearly in my ears. Maybe do a quick check for anything that is REAL quiet too, boost that a little manually. Problem is I don't know how much to boost or lower. Can I see with the meter what the overall average db is, and see if I have a loud part that hits, say -6db and the average is around -12db, so I'd just lower that part by 6db?? and vice versa for quieter parts.
Now, the fader is controlled by the volume envelope so if I do automation I will lose control of the fader for my levels, so should I insert GAIN plug or just use an output gain on one of the inserts I'm gonna use anyways. Either way, at this point I will set the relative levels. Just a quick setting to start off with.
Now I believe I can apply this plugin

    Thanks Ericksimon!!
Looks like a nice tool, similar to what I was looking for but not too cumbersome. I have not gotten a chance to try it out or see how to use it properly.
So at this point, I think I should have a really steady volume level going on.
Now I am not sure about the whole compression thing. I have come across several options. First though, do I want to do any EQing at this point??? before I add compression or after?? There are two points I would want to use EQ, one is to tame any out of control frequencies and 2 would be to shape the overall tone of the vocal. I suppose I could EQ for any bad frequencies first, then do compression and whatnot, then EQ at the end to slightly shape the sound if need be.
Anyways, compression. The Multipressor worries me a bit. I've used it with nice results on instruments and sampled audio, but not on vocals. Also, the downward expansion looks cool. I don't usually have any problem with too much noise, but I guess that's a problem i just never knew I had!!! I just try to track with as little gain as possible while still achieving a usable recording level. Then I get increase the gain later without having a lot of noise on the recorded track. Also, the multipressor would address my Highs in my voice jumping out at times. If I could just compress the Highs and not so much the lower frequencies. That might give me better results than JUST compression the whole spectrum equally.
The OTHER option, maybe, would be to use the DeEsser. I can compress a specific frequency range, but I don't think it has multiple bands. So, I couldn't really get any compression going on for the other bands. But I was thinking about the DeEsser in tandom with a Noise Gate instead of the Mulitpressor. This may be a little easier, but I think I might want to have a full spectrum compression, but be able to compress certain "trouble" frequencies more or less.
So I think I should be done at this point as far as levels and all that go, perhaps if I was to use EQ to color my track a bit, but that is gonna fall in with applying REverb and Delay or whatever else I want to add flavor. WHICH IS A WHOLE nother thread. After mixing about 13 tracks in logic now, I still can't find a setting that I'm comfortable with for my voice. Every recording seems different so every time i have to do something quite different. And every time i feel like it's the first time!!!
Anyways, how does my approach at this point look??
Holy crap,.....I didn't realize I had written that much. My god, If anyone replies you are truly a saint.

    Never do it. Absolutely pointless.
I think if it doesn't hurt anything I WILL because I think it helps me when doing manual edits so that I have a point of reference that is somewhat consistent throughout multiple audio regions
Now, the fader is controlled by the volume envelope so if I do automation I will lose control of the fader for my levels,
This is a good point - in general, send the output of a channel to a bus/aux channel. You can now automate one, and use the fader on the other to offset the levels - doesn't really matter which, although I prefer to automate the channel fader to smooth out the signal before hitting the aux wher the compressor is.
I am not real familiar with aux channels, I've tried using them but didn't understand the send amounts and how it was affecting the signal. If I put the send amount at 100 does 100% of the signal get passed to the fader then. So in your example, I would definitiely want to set at 100. As of now I simply used the gain control on the compressor or whatever plugin was last in the chain, I think that should not be any different in the sound....
The Multipressor worries me a bit. I've used it with nice results on instruments and sampled audio, but not on vocals
I wouldn't use it unless there is a definite reason to use it. At this point, you don't sound sure why you are using, and thus are unlikely to use it effectively. So don't over-complicate and use something simpler - there are plenty of good sounding compressors around, if you don't like Logic's.
well what I did is looked at the problem frequencies that I had corrective EQ'd and made that one band,,,,from say 700-1200, then made the other two bands as 0-700 and 1200-18000 or whatever. I didn't touch the low band, but I applied compression slightly different for each one of the other bands. I think it turned out much better than I expected, but I really don't know that I needed much compression anyways......the manual automation, rider plug and EQing had the signal going to the compressor pretty good already. It's amazing how much better a compressor sounds when the signal coming in isn't pure garbage!!!
I just try to track with as little gain as possible while still achieving a usable recording level.
What levels do you record at?
I believe the settings on my Duet are at about 56-58 usually when I record. This puts the input signal usually bouncing around between -24 to -12 db. I heard that was a good range and leaves lots of headroom. I use Ind. Monitoring level to crank it up so I can record at this level, otherwise it's too quiet to hear over the beat. I like to perform with lots of volume. These settings seem to work well, and NO i don't have a noise problem. Actually after alll the compression and everything was said and done. The "silent" parts between phrases or words were actually pretty much dead silent. So that seems to tell me my gainstaging is correct?
Also, the multipressor would address my Highs in my voice jumping out at times. If I could just compress the Highs and not so much the lower frequencies. That might give me better results than JUST compression the whole spectrum equally.
Maybe, but I still think it's overcomplicating things, although it's hard to say without knowing the recordings. if you have particular sections which are harsh, the common technique employed by the big guys is to split the vocal ("mult") into multiple channels for the appropriate parts, so you can EQ and treat the parts separately. Some producers will even go so far as to automate or mult individual syllables in a vocal phrase, although that is extreme.
yeah, haha, It already took something like 4 hours last night to do what I did. I broke down and manually automated nearly every phrase/syllable in the song!!! Boy, that was work. But, the results were quite apparent. Even taming the out of control stuff, it gave life to the stuff that used to get kind of lost in the mix. I been reading the manual to get some easier shortcuts and stuff for editing automation, so that should cut some time a bit. Also, I'm not gonna be recording much more backing tracks I don't think. If I do, I will probably just copy the automation from the first "Lead" track to the backing track. I have gotten a little more comfortable using reverb to help fatten up my vocals.
So I used manual automation edits. Rider Plugin. Corrective EQing. Multipressor. "Color" Eqing. And Finally SilverVerb.
Sounded much better than before. And really I only spent about an hour or 2 more than what I had originally spent battling with plugins that couldn't correct a bad input. So good in good out and you know the rest. And like I said. I accidentally erased most of the automation I did, then saved then quit. Didn't realize I did that. Oh well. I'm learning

  • Vocal Mixing/Editing Techniques Q's (Chopped N Screwed)

Does anyone know where a good tutorial is for 'Chopped N Skrewed' effects/hooks and such.
Also, I haven't really been interested in Vocal Recordings on Logic, being I used to pay for Studio Time, and would pay people to mix my vocals...BUT can anyone steer me in a good direction on how to, or where to learn some basic tools in vocal mixing. (going to start doing everything myself)
There is this very basic vocal effect that is used in Rap sometimes where the last word of the bar is slowed down, or the bass is dropped, I provided a link...can anyone help me on that effect?
:35 - :42 is the first time the effect is used.

In Logic 9, there is a new feature called "Convert to Sampler Track".
This is now an automated process that uses an audio region, or transient information to automatically create a sampler instrument, placing each "slice" of audio onto a new MIDI key within Logic's sampler (i.e. a separate audio event is triggered on each key from your MIDI keyboard).
Look at this link, scroll down to "Production Tools", and watch the "Convert to Sampler Instrument" video.
    http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/whats-new/
A drum loop is used in the example, but this could easily work for a vocal passage as well.
And once your vocals are split out word for word in the sampler, you are free to "re-play" the vocal words in any order you want, or play a word from your keyboard in a stuttered effect, etc...

  • Help with mixing my first song in Logic Pro X

    Hi everyone,
I am a newbie with regards to Logic Pro X but I feel I am finally in position to mix my first song and I just wondered if anyone had any tips on how I can go about mixing my very first song?
Step-by-Step instructions would be perfect. As this would allow me to learn in a structured way. It would also be helpful if you could give me a brief definition of each effect for example EQ, Reverb, Compression etc and what they are used for in the mixing process.
I would also love to know what volume levels other users use for each specific track when mixing a song.
What volume levels do you use for these tracks/instruments when mixing?
    1) Lead Vocals
    2) Background Vocals
    3) Drums
    4) Synthesizer Chords
    5) Synthesizer Riffs
    6) Strings
    7) Horns
    8) Guitars Riffs
    9) Guitar Solo`s
    10) Percussion
And lastly I would love to know with regards to the 10 different instruments above how I should pan these individual items/tracks? I have heard so much about Panning vocals to the left side and right side for example but I am unsure why musicians do this or what effect it is supposed to have?
    Many thanks.

    As octopi mentions...
There is no "magic bullet" here. Everyone has their own way of doing this... mixing is truly an art, like painting, you choose the canvas or medium (sidewalk, building...etc.) and you choose you subject, and colors, brushes, palette knife... give everyone the same tools and subject and you will have as many individual paintings as participants... and when you think about it, isn't that what you want?  There are rules and there are no rules, only when you fully understand this paradox will you have reached mixing nirvana, grasshopper.
You are correct, fundamentals first. If someone tells you to set a compressor with certain settings... you won't know why those settings were chosen. Take the times to learn the basics.. for effects you want to first learn Equalization, Compression and Reverb.
In your listing you didn't mention Bass.
Traditionally, a mix starts with mixing Drums and Bass.. be careful not to get them as loud as possible, you will need headroom as you add instruments. Traditionally, every instrument in a mix needs to have it's own space, this is done with panning and equalization. If you have a solid bass part.. you don't want the guitar chords to have so much bass they conflict with the bass instrument.

  • Help: Yamaha mixing console and GB

I normally use audio interfaces such as apogee's duet so that I don't have to manually control anything and can get straight to recording vocals adjusting gb's presets as i go along to find a sound i like. Well my apogee had a manufacturers melt down and is off for repairs so i'm left replacing it with a yamaha mg102c mixing console i've never used before. Having never actually set up a mixer to work on my macbook I toyed around with it and set it up problem is I have to control the highs mids and lows from the mixer which powers my mic and the sound i'm getting is less than desirable..very flat and lifeless even when the artist is recording vocals with a great deal of emotion being put forth. So i really need your help in maintaining my sanity.
I'm using the headphone line out to the input on the mixer and the line in to bridge the mixer back into the macbook. should i be recording vocals on stereo 1/2 (line input) with monitor on? The 2tr on the mixer is pressed to monitor because i'm getting troubling sounds when its set to stereo. also should i be or should i not be using the compressor on the mixer?
Any help would help, or if you have the mixer sharing your set up would be great.

I'm using the headphone line out to the input on the mixer and the line in to bridge the mixer back into the macbook.
Why are you sending the Mac's sound back to the mixer?
should i be recording vocals on stereo 1/2 (line input) with monitor on?
Since a mic is generally a mono source, you should record mono (unless you added some fancy stereo effect at the mixing console already).

  • IPod screen black, not recognized and i've tried all the tips, help...

    Hi!
Today i tried to update the OS and Itunes as well. While the download and progress bar doing just fine, and the apple logo on my ipod showing nice progress bar until about 8 percent before finish...
There's error message on itunes something like failed to back up.
And it's dead. Black screen, i tried the tips here from hold the sleep/wake button, home button while connecting, restart computer, and reinstalling itunes.
When i plug the ipod to my computer, it always said USB not recognized, malfunctioned( i tried multiple USB port). And Itunes do nothing, no restore window, etc.
Some idea what should i do would be nice. It was a present bought from another country, and now i used it in Japan. So i dunno if the support still work here.

You're probably going to have to drive the phone to Waterloo.
Here's the situation: You bought the phone from Amazon which has a 90-day exchange warranty. That's mistake #1. Then you registered  the phone for service on Telus' network but the phone wasn't purchased from them so they won't honor any warranty claims (which is their right because they didn't make any money from your purchase of the phone from them). You're in a catch-22 situation. There's really nothing I can advise you to do except buy your next phone from the carrier with which you have monthly service.
Not much help but that's how I see it. Perhaps others can enlighten me with a different point of view. Cheers.

This is something that's bugged me for a few versions and I'm sure someone has a tip for this.
When I use Shape Layer tool, I get a solid color with a vector mask. The tool always makes a new layer every time I use the tool. So to get around that, I draw my shapes (one per layer) and then use the Path Selection Tool and cut and paste between Shape Layer layers.
How can I draw another shape on a currently selected Vector Mask? (I want to build compound Pathfinder-like shapes)

Yes, press the shift key to add to the current shape layer (vector mask).

    Hi There

(see 8 seconds in on the imagespot video)
My scenario is I need to portray a network of nodes that are all interlinked (and possibly increasing in number, network links and nodes flourishing from spawn points of other nodes portraying that the network is an infinite expandable entity).
Could anyone suggest how I'd create this, point me to tutorials, or let me know what the actual term for that kind of linked kinetic motion is?
The important thing I suppose is how I manage the workflow efficiently. There must be a more effective way than animating 50+ nodes individually, also how would I best tie the network links that connect the nodes (as in the example) so that they follow the nodes wherever they are (this motion can be random).
    Any help appreciated

  • Tool tip help very easy one i know.

I know this will be a simple one for everyone, but I have googled the heck out of this and must be googleing the wrong terms or something. How or where in dreamweaver do you put in your tool tips? When people hover over a image or a link and the tool tip pops up. I can't seem to find out where to put this information. And is it very important for SEO?
    Thanks

You can also add it in the Tag Inspector under Attributes.
As far as SEO goes, they're not very important due to the ease of "cramming" or filling attributes with keywords that may or may not have anything to do with the actual content of the page. For the same reason, the keywords meta tag is completely ignored by most Search Engines.
The most important thing in SEO is relevant, keyword rich html text content.

  • Snare tips help. please read...

hey i was wondering if you guys knew how to make those crazy snare rolls that you hear in a lot of Dance/Techno music. you know in a lot of music like cascada and stuff they have those snares hitting like a million times a second, how do they do that?

    Hello nicholas,
please clarify the type of result you want to get:
...a fast series of single snare hits?
...a sound that sounds like hitting multiple snares at the same beat?
...snare "rolls" like they do for example in a circus before the final stunt to create an atmosphere of suspense and tension.
Well: Small snare rolls are provided with many drum kits. Just load the EXS with the Factory Rock Kit and test some drums: There are at least two snare rolls, one longer on the a0 and one shot on the d#1.
A fast series of single snare hits can be done by looking at the piano roll, zooming in and creating many very short MIDI Events. You could, for example, use 1/32 or 1/64 Notes instead of the standard 1/16.
Good luck and welcome to the board.

  • I need help getting my RSS feed compaitble with Itunes...Im almost there.

Can someone help me with my code for itunes. Unfortunately I use rapidweaver to podcast and I have read there are a few things Rapidweaver leaves out when publishing the site so itunes does not accept the feed. My RSS feed works and can be subscribed manually though Itunes or with software. Im thinking im using spaces or it looks like I need to number my tracks for my podcast(which sounds odd but, I know itunes is finicky with spaces, symbols etc)
thank you so much for the help...after I get my podcast set in Itunes I will be a happy camper!
here is what the validation suggest from the free validator:
    Congratulations!

From the FeedValidator report the feed is basically OK for iTunes. There are several occasions where 'content:encoded' sections (following immediately on 'guid' tags) should be enclosed in
    <description>...</description>
tags: however all this will be ignored by iTunes anyway and only applies to other readers. The 'potentially dangerous content' referred to by FeedValidator is within the 'content:encoded' tags and so isn't relevant to iTunes. They are referring to an inline css style, and I don't know whether this might cause a problem elsewhere.
You should really have a language tag, e.g.
    <language>en-us</language>
(you have a dc:language tag but that's for a different system). This should be placed in the top section, before the first 'item' tag.
It's advisable to have an 'itunes:explicit' tag for each 'item' -
<itunes:explicit>yes IF CONTAINS ADULT MATERIAL, OTHERWISE no</itunes:explicit>
it's not compulsory if you have no adult material, but you must have a 'yes' if you do.
You can check your feed by subscribing in iTunes from the 'Advanced' menu - this has the same result as clicking the 'Subscribe' button on the Store page. If it works OK there you are ready to submit it.
