To Interact With Printer

hi people
i want to interact with printer . My Problem is i have given the .exe file tht does the job of prining the .pdf files.. i neeed to check weather the printer is working properly and i have to handle the excpetion tht comes from the printer.. can we implement this...
this is urgent ....

Let me see if I have the correct spin on what you want to do...
You have an exe that you have to hand a PDF off to from your Java applicatons.
You need to check if the printer is working.
If the printer is not working you need to handle the exception that it will return.
Since you have an EXE i will assume you are in windows....
You'll need to check the printer first to see if it works and handle the appropriate exceptions, then I will assume also (my crystal ball is vague this morning) that you will be calling the exe with a cmd and using a command line argument for the PDF and once the print is done, the exe will terminate.
If not then you will have to build an OLE/DDE interface in JNI depending on what your EXE will support.
Can you implement this? I don't know, post some of your code and let's see where you have problems and be specific with questions... other wise if you are looking for someone to code it for you... then contact one of your local consulting firms, I'm sure they can get if for you.

    The 'Winmail.dat' problem has been extensively covered in these forums, I would search for that (a Google search works well) and unfortunately I have not seen the pdf print problem before, but assuming the software is current and functions normally (other than the pdf print problem) I have no suggestion other than the obvious (but time consuming) re-installation of Office.

  • How to print a pdf without user interaction (With C#)

    My boss assigned me a task that to get the ImagePreview of 1st page of PDF.
    My thought is to print the 1st page of PDF to file(virtual print to file), and get the image source, but there comes the problem:
    How can print a pdf without user interaction(With C#),question are these:
    1. I can use the ShellExcute but cannot assign the destination of output file.
    2. User interface is unwanted, I don't want show anyone the Acrobat Reader interface who click the file just want to get a preview.
    3. No place to put those parameters in.
    This problem confused me a lot of days, I wish someone can give some hints.
    Thank you very much!
    (Maybe you will tell me to use Acrobat SDK, please don't, I'm afraid we cannot afford that)

    This is the first step. There are many documents, but start with the

    A PDX is a search database to allow you to do fast searching in
    Acrobat.

    >About the relationship between Adobe Reader and Acrobat, as far as I know is that, the previous one is just the reading tool for PDF document, instead, Acrobat can modify and resave the PDF doc. Is it right?
    Effectively, yes. But the Acrobat SDK is mainly for working with
    Acrobat. It's very important to keep this clear, since you have said
    you only have the free Reader, so 95% of what is in the SDK cannot
    work for you.

    Simply, there is no point asking these questions, yet, because you
    have not started on the documentation.
    But let's continue in the SDK forum, where I have posed what seems to
    be a very important question about why print to file at all.

  • Interacting with perl through java.

    I'm trying to do something with Java that I haven't managed to do until now. I'm trying to interact with a perl process giving him input and reading output.
    I have a perl module that has several functions and the idea is to launch a process in a java program with the following line :
    perl -e 'while(<STDIN>) { eval $_ ; }'
    and then give the process the necessary input and the read the given output.
    For instance with the above line you can do the following:
    [user@host ~]$ perl -e 'while(<STDIN>) { eval $_ ; }'
    print "Hello World\n";
    Hello World
    Here is the code I'm using:
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    public class ExecProgram {
    private static Runtime runtime;
    private static Process process;
    public static void main(String[] args) {
         runtime = Runtime.getRuntime();
         try {
         process = runtime.exec("/usr/bin/perl -e 'while(<STDIN>) { eval $_ ; }'");
              process = runtime.exec(cmd);
         } catch (IOException e) {
              System.err.println("Error executing process");
         PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(process.getOutputStream());
         String commandLine = "print \"Hello World\n\"";
         out.println(commandLine);
         BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(process.getInputStream()));
         try {
         String line;
         while ((line = in.readLine()) != null)
              System.out.println("Output: "+line);
         } catch (IOException e) {
         System.err.println("Error reading output");
    As you can see I'm using Runtime class to interact with the process but nothing happens if replace the exec line with:
    process = runtime.exec("ls");
    I can see in the output the listing of the current directory.
    Have you ever tried something like this? Is this the correct way for doing this?

    Have you ever tried something like this? I have. Here's a rough sample:
        public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
            String[] cmd = new String[]{
                "/usr/bin/perl",
                "-e",

            final Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
            new Thread(){
                public void run(){
                    try{
                        BufferedReader r = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
                        for(String line; (line = r.readLine()) != null; System.out.println("ProcessOUT:: "+line));
                    catch (Throwable t){

                    catch (Throwable t){
    //                    t.printStackTrace();
            }.start();
            new Thread(){
                public void run(){
                    try{
                        OutputStream out = p.getOutputStream();
                        for(int ii = 0; ii < commands.length; ii++){
                            System.err.println("Sending command: "+commands[ii]);
                            out.write(commands[ii].getBytes());
                            out.write('\n');
                            out.flush();
                    catch (Throwable t){

  • Interacting with Powershell from Java

    Hi,
    I'm trying to run a Java application which creates a new powershell process on startup and then later on interacts with it multiple times. Calling powershell.exe and have it execute a single command and return the output works fine for me. The problem arises if I don't want the powershell process to immediately finish/exit but to stay open so I can write to its outputStream and receive results back from the inputStream.
    String input = "dir";
    String[] commandList = {"powershell.exe", "-Command", "dir"};
    ProcessBuilder pb = new ProcessBuilder(commandList);
    Process p = pb.start();
    if(input != null) {
    PrintWriter writer = new PrintWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(new BufferedOutputStream(p.getOutputStream())), true);
    writer.println(input);
    writer.flush();
    writer.close();
    //p.getOutputStream().close();
    Gobbler outGobbler = new Gobbler(p.getInputStream());
    Gobbler errGobbler = new Gobbler(p.getErrorStream());
    Thread outThread = new Thread(outGobbler);
    Thread errThread = new Thread(errGobbler);
    outThread.start();
    errThread.start();
    System.out.println("Waiting for the Gobbler threads to join...");
    outThread.join();
    errThread.join();
    System.out.println("Waiting for the process to exit...");
    int exitVal = p.waitFor();
    System.out.println("\n****************************");
    System.out.println("Command: " + "cmd.exe /c dir");
    System.out.println("Exit Value = " + exitVal);
    List<String> output = outGobbler.getOuput();
    input = "";
    for(String o: output) {
    input += o;
    System.out.println("Final Output:");
    System.out.println(input);
    This code returns the result of the "dir" command from a powershell - fine. But as you can see, I'm trying to run a second "dir" command using
    PrintWriter writer = new PrintWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(new BufferedOutputStream(p.getOutputStream())), true);
    writer.println(input);
    writer.flush();
    This has no effect whatsoever - no second dir output is shown when I run my code. I've also experimented with a powershell.exe option to open the powershell but not close it immediately:
    String[] commandList = {"powershell.exe", "-NoExit", "-Command", "dir"};
    But then my code hangs, meaning the Gobbler's who consume the process's inputStream don't read anything - strangely enough: they don't even read the first line - there must be at least some output....
    I've also tried to close the process's outputStream after writing the second "dir" command to it - didn't change anything.
    But when I initially call the cmd.exe using the /k (keep open) switch:
    String[] commandList = {"cmd.exe", "/k", "dir"};
    I can then still write to that outputstream and invoke the second "dir" command and get the output of both "dir" commands from the inputstream fo that process.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kurt

    .... but this rather problem of powershell, not the java code
    I have not a clue how to force powershell to flush
    it's output stream after each command.

  • Interacting with Web pages

    We have developed a J2EE application (jsp, struts, ejbs, etc.) and now have a requirement to interact with hardware at the client's site. The application needs to interact with printers, check readers and DL readers. Can a JWS application interact with the web pages?
    For example, when a check is scanned, can the information be displayed on the web page? Additionally, we need to be able to print on both sides of the check. If I tell the application to print, can it respond back to the web application when it is done so the check can be flipped over and printed on the other side?

    Java WebStart is "just" a deployment mechanism. An application deployed through JWS can do anything a regular Java application can do (provided it has the appriopriate permissions). This includes talking to whatever kind of server you can think of.
    If staying within the sandbox is an issue for your app, you should take a look at the JNLP API, which allows you to do some "safe" things (like printing) on the user's system through interaction with the user. The advantage of staying within the sandbox is not having to sign your app and not having to ask the user for elevated permissions.

  • Interacting with Operating System

    Does anyone know if Java has the ability to interact with the OS to filter print jobs and IO operations initiated from other applications?
    I need to write an application that acts as as a filter to prevent Netscape from printing and/or saving files.
    Thanks

    No, Java doesn't do things like that, that are specific to the operating system. You would be far better off to use a low-level language specific to the operating system you have in mind.

  • How do modems interact with efax and ccl scripts to receive calls in 10.5?

    I want to do two things:
    1) alter the modem init string used for faxing and receiving calls, and
    2) alter the RING string to detect and respond to other modem responses during the answer process
    The machine in question is a PowerBook G4 with an Apple Internal Modem (V.92) running Leopard 10.5.1.
    In searching, it seems that Leoard is using efax as its base fax app. I have located the efax plist in the LaunchDaemons folder. It sends the 'answer' command via the 'fax' app to the 'efax' app. This command is an argument key in the plist.
    Now, how do I change the modem init string that is used for the purpose of faxing? Also, how do the modem CCL files interact with this whole process - or do they?
    Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. I'm either just googling for the wrong things or there aren't many people looking for this information? Most likely the former...

    Well, I'm starting to feel like I've got a little blog going on here, since I'm only answering myself - but for anyone else who may someday seek this information, here is a little more:
    In Leopard, when you set up the fax in System Preferences/Printers and Fax, it enables an efax plist used by an application called 'launchd'. When your computer boots up, if that plist is indicated as enabled (using a key within the plist), launchd starts up the 'fax' script with parameters matching what is entered in the fax setup in System Preferences. This script starts up the 'efax' application, which runs continuously in the background, waiting for a call to come in.
    The plists involved are:
    Library\Preferences\com.apple.print.FaxPrefs.plist -- which contains the actual fax preferences, like phone number and number of rings for example, that are ultimately provided to efax.
    System\Library\LaunchDaemons\com.apple.efax.plist -- which is the one used by launchd to start the fax script, and which contains the arguments and path to that script.
    efax does not use the CCL scripts; instead, those seem to be used by the Internet Connection modem selection, as I mentioned previously.
    efax runs in the background constantly. If it were to crash for some reason, launchd would automatically start it up again - unless the fax functionality is turned off in System Preferences, in which case the efax application would be 'turned off', and would no longer run in the background.
    There is a 'lock' feature in efax, which is supposed to temporarily suspend efax while other apps use the modem. So, my next question is whether I can somehow leave the Internet Connect functionality running, exiting when I get the result I want, which would then allow efax to come on up and answer the phone.
    Alright, I'm going to admit it - I'm trying to find a way to make Distinctive Ring work with efax. The PowerBook G4 internal modem can sense Distinctive Ring with a +VDR=n,n value added to the initialization string. Once this is added to the init string, the modem will return the amount of time the ringer is on or off, with values like DRON=8 and DROF=40, as well as the normal RING. Using a CCL script, I can look for those values coming in from the modem instead of the usual RING value. (As far as I can tell, I cannot do this with efax directly without changing the actual source code. The RING value it looks for is hard-coded.) So, the question becomes how to transfer control from the Internet Connect to efax, and can I do so soon enough for it to be able to answer the phone before my AT&T CallNotes does?
    More to come (if someone else doesn't answer my question before I do

  • Unable To Communicate With Printer HP Officejet Pro 8600 (Network)

    I recently purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8600. One morning a couple weeks ago I tried to print something and I received a prompt saying "Unable to Communicate with Printer (Network)". I turned off the printer and turned it back on which did not help, I then turned off my wireless network, turned it back on and still nothing. I finally figured out that I first have to turn off the printer, then turn off my wireless router wait thirty seconds, turn the router back on and the turn the printer back on. After these steps my printer was working. The next morning the same thing happened "Unable to Communicate with Printer (Network)" and I've been replaying Groundhog's Day ever since.
    Please help!

    Hello msheehy-
    I would like to help you with this issue. It sounds like the router is changing the ip address of the printer. This could be caused by a couple reasons. (ip lease time, power loss to the router) I would recommend looking at the following link. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03781399&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4323648&tmp...
    I think if you would set a static ip address in the printer EWS you would better off. I hope this helps.

    I am able to connect to my Mac Mini on Back to My Mac through iCloud but the keyboard/trackpad on the MBAir or MBP with which I access does not register on the Mini.  So I can see the screen but cannot interact with it. Mini works accessing MBP/Air and I can use Mini to input data or interact with screens of those computers.

    Regarding your first question about bookmarks, I think you discovered the answer in when you pressed the address bar. The second tab there has your bookmarks.
    As for the keyboard, I'm not sure why your Firefox is reacting so slowly; mine seems to show keyboards even when I don't want them. If you have accumulated a lot of history, perhaps that's an issue?
    Did you use any third party software to move your Firefox data from internal memory to the storage card?

  • HP Officejet Pro 8100 unable to communicate with printer, but still prints

    Hello,
    I have an Officejet Pro 8100 connected to a Windows XP SP3 computer via USB.
    When installing  I downloaded the latest drivers off the HP webiste and followed the instructions for installing the printer and connecting via USB.  While installing I only installed the basic print driver.
    The printer appeared to install correctly.
    When printing (test page, or from other programs such as Word or Excell), the printer will actually print the requested document, however, an error box will pop up saying "Unable to communicate with printer".  The only option on the error box is the cancel the current print job.
    Before cancelling the print job, even though the printer actually printed the document, I can still see the document in the print queue until I click the "Cancel" button on the error box.
    I have deleted the printer, uninstalled and reinstalled twice, but the issue persists.
    Any ideas?

    Hi aconway,
    I hate to hear you are having issues.  This could be caused by a port issue, bad USB cable/hub/switch connection, or possibly a spooler or driver issue.  Click Here to run the print and scan doctor (select OS, then click the + sign beside utility diagnostic tools, click the download button next to print and scan doctor). If you would like to learn more about your product, Click Here.
    Suggestions:
    1. Run the print and scan doctor to identify any port issues
    2. Connect unit directly to PC with new USB cable that meets specifications(no longer than 4-6ft).
    3. Remove any hubs or switches if being used.
    Hope this helps!

  • I am using Firefox 11 and I am unable to print web pages. I can print PDFs ok. I tried to open the prefs.js file to delete anything that starts with print and I get an error message.

    I cannot print web pages. I've tried the solutions suggested like deleting anything that starts with print in the prefs.js file but I get an error message: Script: c:\users\rick\appdata\roading\mozilla\firefox\profiles\iviwh5c1.default\prefs.js
    line: 1
    Char: 1
    Error: invalid character
    code: 800A03F6
    Source: Microsoft JScript compilation error

    When editing '''prefs.js''' you need to use a simple text editor program. WinXP Notepad messes up the line formatting of prefs.js, so I use Wordpad - but you need to save the edited file in a Text-Only format (Wordpad asks about that when you go to save the edited file). I never used Win7, so I don't know if that version of Notepad messes with the line formatting of prefs.js or not.
    Another thing - make sure '''''"Hide extensions for known file types"''''' is de-delected in Windows file / folder options > view -> advanced settings. Otherwise Windows may add a .txt file extension that you won't be able to see, and that will break that file in Firefox. '''prefs.js.txt''' won't be recognized by Firefox, when is expecting to find '''''prefs.js''''' .
