Tomcat 4 to 5.5.16 upgrade

hello again! there are some jar files in tomcat 4 which are not in tomcat 5. i found some with direct replacement like the servlet.jar which is servlet-api.jar in the newer version. how about the other jar files from tomcat 4 with no direct replacement? can they simply be copied? thank you.\\

I wouldn't try messing around with the default JARs that come with the Tomcat installation. Inventory exactly what external JARs your application needs, and put them in the WEB-INF/lib directory of your web-app.
The only time I've ever found it necessary to change the JAR files in common/lib is when WEB-INF/lib contains JARs which are already in common/lib. In this case, either remove the offending JAR from common/lib, or from WEB-INF/lib.
If you're bound to particular versions of a JAR because of the way your code is written, I'd move the Tomcat JARs out of common/lib and leave your WEB-INF/lib intact. However, that's only a temporary solution; best is to update your application to use the versions of the JARs that Tomcat is installed with. (Mostly it's just the jakarta-commons stuff that's affected, but I'm sure there's others)

  • Unable to resolve Apache-Tomcat after 5.0.2 Upgrade / Content Server Install

    I recently upgraded from 5.0.1 to 5.0.2. With 5.0.1, I was able to resolve to http://<apache-tomcat.domain.com>:8080 as well as http://<apache-tomcat.domain.com>:8080/ptcsand http://<apache-tomcat.domain.com>:8080/ptcs/diagnosticsTest.jsp. However, after upgrading to 5.0.2, I am unable to resolve to any of these URLs. The 'Content Server' admin. folder shows up within the admin. ui and all necessary objects are there. Other than the upgrade, no other changes were made to the server. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Did you upgrade to Tomcat 4.1.27LE version ?

  • Tomcat 4.1 Configuration after upgrading Java SDK

    Hi
    I have an existing Tomcat 4.1 installation which runs on Java 2 SDK 1.4.1_01. I've upgraded the SDK to 1.4.2_08. However, I can't seem to get the Tomcat 4.1 Windows service to start with the new SDK.
    What do I have to do to ensure that the Tomcat 4.1 Windows service runs with the new SDK? Do I have to reinstall Tomcat 4.1 or is there some configuration I can change?
    Thanks for the help :)
    Regards,
    Lily

    I've set the JAVA_HOME to the new JDK installation.
    However it seems that the Apache Tomcat 4.1 windows service is looking for the old JDK installation, hence the windows service is unable to start.

  • Changing JVM in Tomcat 4.1

    Does anyone know how to change which JVM Tomcat uses? I do not have Tomcat installed as a service, and I have changed the JAVA_HOME environment variable to point to SDK 1.4 (instead of SDK 1.3) but if I start the Tomcat manager, it still says it is using 1.3. And my Web applications behave as if they are using 1.3. Help!
    /Arthur

    Check your startup.bat script.
    Chances are it has encoded the path to your JVM in there.
    You have 1.3 and 1.4 Java both installed on your system?
    I know I had trouble doing it - I ended up reinstalling Tomcat to convince it to upgrade.
    Good luck,

  • Remove c:out tag

    Hello
    I am using tomcat 5.0
    In my jsp file, I have to type like this
    Name: <c:out value="${myVariable}"/>I know that I can have something like
    Name: ${myVariable}In the top of jsp, I have
    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" %>How I can remove <c:out ...... />
    Thanks

    Well you open the file in your favorite editor, find the line with the <c:out> you don't want, highlight the first part of it (up to the ${, and hit the key labelled "delete", then highlight the tail part of it,  (from } to the end) and press delete again.
    Or you could use a tool to do a global search and replace.
    But seriously - why do it? What does it hurt? What could it break?
    The <c:out> tag escapes html characters for you, so you ARE changing the functionality of the application by doing this.
    Actually taking a closer look, you are using JSTL1.0 (from the URI)
    If you have a JSP2.0 compatible container (eg Tomcat 5 + ) you should just upgrade to JSTL1.1
    - replace standard.jar and jstl.jar
    - change your import line to <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %> (note the subtle addition of /jsp)
    - upgrade the declaration in web.xml to register that it is 2.4, rather than 2.3 (using the new xml schema syntax)

    you shouldn't need to specify the taglib stuff in
    web.xml, but you do need to make sure the URI matches
    the version of the JSTL you are using.
    For JSTL 1.0 (Tomcat <5), you would use the URI you
    have (http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core), but for JSTL
    1.1 (Tomcat 5+), use http://java.sun.com/jstl/core
    instead.
    that should do it.....er... you have those URIs around the wrong way:
    1.0 = http://java.sun.com/jstl/core (JSP1.2)
    1.1 = http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core (JSP2.0 container = Tomcat 5)
    When it was upgraded to 1.1 it was more closely integrated with JSP - and is actually part of the JSP2.0 spec. Hence the addition of the /jsp/ to the path.
    You do have standard.jar and jstl.jar sitting in your web-inf/lib directory don't you?

  • Caculate the license for Small web application

    Hi,
    I am usimg MS product to develop appliction . And now i am interest in JSF. However, the license's caculation seems very complicate and there is no good development tools.
    In MS product like C#, I just buy the development tools only. It included the license for MSDE. And the Web server is free. It is very simple. It is easy to migrage from MSDE to SQL Server when needed.
    How about the JAVA environment ?
    Sun Java Studio Creator + Tomcat + MySQL ??
    How to caculate the license ? There seems some hidden license free for production environment. How can I develop an application in test environment only ?
    I perfer the environment is :
    Sun Java Studio Creator + Tomcat + MSDE
    So I can upgrade to SQL if needed for long run.
    Any idea ?
    Thanks
    Wilson

    Sun Java Studio Creator comes bundled with Sun Appserver (for deployment) and pointbase (database) for development.
    i.e Sun Java Studio Creator + Sun Appserver + Pointbase
    Once the web application is developed you have the option to deploy to any J2EE compliant Application server such as
    Tomcat
    Websphere
    Weblogic
    JBoss
    etc ..
    Similarly you can use any database such as
    Oracle
    MS SQL server
    Sybase
    MySQL
    etc ...
    as long as you have the proper JDBC driver (which most vendors provide).
    The web application devloped by JSC is J2EE standard based. So there is no hidden fee involved to deploy to any other J2EE compliant Appserver or to use any standard Database that has proper JDBC driver.

  • New error with upgrade jboss/tomcat: "Connection handle has been closed and is unusable"

    Hi,
    This error suddenly appeared when we upgraded from jboss3/tomcat5.0 to jboss4.2/tomcat5.5.
    here's the usecase:
    1) User clicks on report link
    2) Crystal reports web componnent displays screen to fill in report parameters.
    3) user enters parameters and clicks submit
    4) System throws Exception
    The same reports worked fine with jboss 3.2.6/tomcat 5.0. We haven't touched anything in this realm.
    Log Excerpt:
    09:42:18,842 INFO  [datasource] Openning rowset
    09:42:18,904 ERROR [reportdefinition] com.crystaldecisions.reports.queryengine.driverImpl.m: JDBC Error: Connection handle has been closed and is unusable

    com.crystaldecisions.reports.reportdefinition.datainterface.g: JDBC Error: Connection handle has been closed and is unusable
         at com.crystaldecisions.reports.reportdefinition.datainterface.d.a(Unknown Source)
    To try to narrow down the problem, I've updated the jdbc configuration to
         <track-statements>true</track-statements>
    here's a recap:
    This Boolean element specifies whether to check for unclosed statements when a connection is returned to the pool. If it is true, a warning message is issued for each unclosed statement. If the log4j category org.jboss.resource.adapter.jdbc.WrappedConnection has trace level enabled, a stack trace of the connection close call is logged as well. This is a debug feature that can be turned off in production.
    Interestingly enough, this error appears slightly upstream:
    (CachedConnectionManager.java:526) - Closing a connection for you.  Please close them yourself: org.jboss.resource.adapter.jdbc.WrappedConnection@c76003

    So the question arises:
    1) Is the jboss datasource overly/aggressively closing result sets?
    2) or is there a coding error in CRXIR2?
    thanks,
    bill

    <p>
    OK. I found the problem along with a workaround.
    </p>
    <p>
    <strong>The problem:</strong>
    </p>
    <p>
    a programming practice clashes with a new jboss 'safety check'.
    </p>
    <p>
    <strong>Programming practice:</strong>
    </p>
    <p>
    crystal reports gets a database connection in one jsp page, then tries to use it on another jsp/servlet
    </p>
    <p>
    <strong>Jboss safety check:</strong>
    Jboss/tomcat new comes configured out-of-the-box with a 'cached connection
    manager', which
    </p>
    <p>
    "Check[s] for unclosed connections and transaction terminated checks in servlets/jsps."
    </p>
    <p>
    <strong> Summary</strong>
    </p>
    <p>
    In short, if a servlet/jsp ends and it leaves a database connection open, Jboss will automatically close it.
    </p>
    <p>
    </p>
    <p>
    <strong>Workaround:</strong><br />
    Comment out two entries in these two files:
    </p>
    <p>
    1) conf/jboss4/pe/deploy/jboss-web.deployer/server.xml
    </p>
    <p>
    2) conf/jboss4/pe/deploy/jboss-web.deployer/META-INF/jboss-service.xml
    </p>
    <p>
    The two entries:
    </p>
    <p>
    </p>
    <p>
    1)
    </p>
    <p>
                 <Valve className="org.jboss.web.tomcat.service.jca.CachedConnectionValve"<br />
                    cachedConnectionManagerObjectName="jboss.jca:service=CachedConnectionManager"<br />
                    transactionManagerObjectName="jboss:service=TransactionManager" /><br />
    </p>
    <p>
    2)
    </p>
    <p>
          <depends>jboss.jca:service=CachedConnectionManager</depends><br />
    </p>
    <p>
    </p>
    <p>
    <strong>Comments on the workaround</strong>
    </p>

    The 'cached connection manager' basically makes sure that the application cleans up after bad programmers. It seems most helpful in development, load testing, or trouble shooting.

    In production,  you can likely  comment them out with minimal

  • How to upgrade Tomcat from 5.5 to 6.0 on BusinessObjects XI 3.1 SP5

    Hi,
    I have recently installed BOE Enterprise XI 3.1 SP5 on SLES11.
    Tomcat 5.5 has been installed as part of the Installation.
    JVM 1.5 was also installed.
    Now since Tomcat 5 is in End of Life support, hence it has been marked as a security risk by the scans performed.
    I need to upgrade Tomcat from 5.5 to 6.0.
    I am looking for relevant documentation as I couldn't find any official guide for it.
    Can someone help me out here with the official documentation on tomcat upgrade.
    Regards,
    Puneet

    Dear Puneet,
    Here are the steps to upgrade from Tomcatxx to Tomcat yy:
    The below steps are for upgrading default 5.5.20 tomcat to a higher
    incremental release of tomcat.
    This method is not intended in an upgrade from default 5.5.20 to a major
    release version such as tomcat 6 or 7.
    Stop the Tomcat
    Run the script ./tomcatshutdown.sh in bobje directory.
    Rename bobje/Tomcat to tomcat_bak.Command: mv bobje/Tomcat
    tomcat_bak
    Download tomcat 5.5.xx core tgz file from Apache website to bobje/tomcat and
    extract using the command: tar -xvf tgz filename
    Create new folder apache-tomcat-5.5.xx.Command:mkdir apache-tomcat-5.5.xx
    Rename folder apache-tomcat-5.5.xx to Tomcat55 using the move command
    Go to the deployment directory which is one level above bobje.
    Run the script ./wdeploy.sh tomcat55 deployall
    Message:"Build Successful"
    Run the script ./tomcatstartup.sh to start the Tomcat.

  • Jsp import package error after upgrading to jdk1.4.2_08 and tomcat 5.0

    I am trying to upgrade the jdk and tomcat from 1.3/3.3 to 1.4/5.0.
    My jsp imports worked fine prior to the upgrade, but now I get the following:
    Jun 6, 2005 10:01:17 AM org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler generateClass

    The package in the import statement "import com.adware.print.database.inquire.*" actually has no classes in it. The classes are contained in "import com.adware.print.database.inquire.controller.*". If I change the import statement everything works. The problem is that I have 100s of jsps. If there is a work-around outside of changing the import statements, that would be best.
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

    do you know what url is being looked up? the message is complaining that the url is starting with the string "an]", which seems pretty bogus.

  • Upgrade Tomcat From 4.1 To 5.5

    I've got a Solaris 10 (8/07) installation that has come with Tomcat 4.1 as a default. We are in the process or writing our own web service that will use Tomcat. However I've been told by our developer that I must upgrade Tomcat to the latest (5.5.29 I think). Can someone tell me how to do this. Is there an option to upgrade automatically via the web or do i have to follow a distinct upgrade step by step path?
    TIA.

    You have posted your question in the wrong forum.
    none-the-less --- you seem to need to upgrade to a specific version of tomcat, the latest 5.x.
    You should download the version you need from http://tomcat.apache.org/
    wget http://apache.cyberuse.com/tomcat/tomcat-5/v5.5.29/bin/apache-tomcat-5.5.29.tar.gz
    cd /your/install/directory
    unpack it with "tar zxvf apache-tomcat-5.5.29.tar.gz"
    That is it for installation.
    You will have to configure it, which you will have to figure out on your own, ask for help from your developer, or post your questions to a tomcat forum, or subscribe to tomcat-users mail list <[email protected]>

    HttpConnector[8082] Starting background thread

    Solved it. I ran into this problem too, and had to look all over the place to find the solution.
    In the end it's a matter of binning your current JBuilder project and starting a new one with the same files. For some reason JBuilder5 hates switching Tomcat installations within projects. From there it seems to ignore changes to your web.xml, and insists on yu_hung's error.
    Switch it all into a new project with Tomcat 4 as its default server, and it becomes happy again.
    Hope that helps!

    What is the

    I moved my war file into my new Tomcat 4.0.4 webapps directory
    since I
    need to upgrade in order to use some 'other' tags and I'm
    receiving
    the following stacktrace when I try to hit the first page in my
    application....
    Any ideas as to why this is occurring?
    StackTrace Below:
    Application Error
