kind regards,

does this mean i need some custom mapping somewhere
cause now i cant access the application via
http://server:8086/XNS/
like i was b4Yes. Let me preface by saying, when you are learning how to configure a product, it is always best practice to read the documentation on the preduct's web page and provided by the product. For Tomcat 4, that is: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/Now, the particuar area that you do: You need to make a <Context ...> element for your app. Details of the context element can be found here:
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/config/context.htmlThe best thing to do is to create an XML file named XNS.xml file and place it in the webapps directory. This xml file will contain the <Context> element so you do not need to edit the server.xml. See this page for more details:
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/config/host.html#Automatic%20Application%20DeploymentThe XNS.xml you have may just look like this:
<Context path="/XNS" docBase="XNS"
debug="5" privileged="true" reloadable="true"/>Where path is the addition to the URL that uses the webapp:http://server:8086/XNS
The docBase is the location of the directory containing the files (relative to webapps, or an absolute location. /<TOMCAT_HOME>/webapps/XNS
at the moment i dont have a ROOT/WEb-INF/web.xml i renamed it so it not
recognized because if it is there i get no dir listing at all and nothing worksThen you have an error in the web.xml. Look through your <TOMCAT_HOME>/logs and read anything that has something written in it about the time that you try to start the server.
my classes are in TOMCAT_HOME/server/lib which is in the classpath
and like i said this setup is working on a unix server ??Try not to put things inside the server/lib. The documents say "This class loader (containing <TOMCAT_HOME>/server/lib) is initialized to include all classes and resources required to implement Tomcat 4 itself." Your classes are NOT needed to load Tomcat, so should not be placed there.
You should place them in your application's classpath: that is in <TOMCAT_HOME>/webapps/XNS/WEB-INF/lib or <TOMCAT_HOME>/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/lib depending on which context is using them (if both are using the JARs you have, put them in both places).
Again, read the documents at http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc thoroughly.

Placing the prefix before the URI as shown below works when deploying to Tomcat
<%@ taglib prefix="spring" uri="http://www.springframework.org/tags" %>
but does not work for OC4J.
For OC4J , placing the prefix after URI works , but will not work under Tomcat
<%@ taglib uri="http://www.springframework.org/tags" prefix="spring" %>
Any ideas?

but does not work for OC4J.It should not matter which one is placed first. If it does not work for OC4J, it should be, as my first thought, caused by some factors other than the order of attributes. Can you confirm that once if the uri and the prefix are switched in a single jsp file, then that jsp file will be working correctly? If so, what is version of your oc4j?
As far as I have tried on oc4j 10.1.3.0.0, there is no such problem. -
Taglib repeating in jsp page in TOMCAT. (Can this be Tag pool issue? )
Hi,
We have an application and it is running fine on one servlet container "ServletExec". We are migrating our application to Tomcat and some weird things happenned.
In one of my JSP pages say page " A ", I have included another small JSP say " B "which just created a table with one row and various columns.
Now the columns are created in a taglib. And I am using that taglib inside that page " B".
Now this is working fine in ServletExec.
But in tomcat when I refersh page A or come to this page dfrom some other page, there are multiple instance of tables from page B are rendered.
SO every time I refresh a new entry added to already existing table.
Can any one please help?
I looked in some documents and found that this may be because of some Tag pooling in Tomcat newer versions. Is that right?
If yes how can I remove this tag pooling in my taglib java class?
Any help is highly appreciated.
ThanksHi
try disabling the tag pooling and check the page.
To disable the tag pooling in Tomcat
make enablePooling = false for the jsp servlet declaration in
$TOMCAT_HOME/conf/web.xml

Help needed to run JSTL 1.1 in Tomcat 6.0.16
Hi All,Help needed to run JSTL 1.1 in Tomcat 6.0.16. I am trying to run the example given in http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html The example tries to connect to MySQL database from JSP using JSTL and JNDI Datasource.I am running the example using Eclipse 3.4.2 using Sysdeo plugin to start and stop Tomcat server from Eclipse IDE.
My web.xml file has <web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee" xmlns:web="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_2_5.xsd" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_2_5.xsd" id="WebApp_ID" version="2.5">
</web-app>
and test.jsp has proper taglib directives
<%@ taglib prefix="sql" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/sql" %>
<%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %>
I have placed the jstl.jar and standard.jarof the jakarta-taglibs-standard-1.1.2.zip under E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent\WEB-INF\lib directory also placedcontext.xml file under E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent\META-INF and the content of context.xml is as below
<Context path="/DBTest" docBase="DBTest"
debug="5" reloadable="true" crossContext="true">
<Resource name="jdbc/TestDB" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource"
maxActive="100" maxIdle="30" maxWait="10000"
username="deepa" password="mysql" driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"
url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/javatest?autoReconnect=true"/>
</Context>
Now while running the example, Eclipse creates one DBTest.xml file under C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0\conf\Catalina\localhost
which has the following line:
<Context path="/DBTest" reloadable="true" docBase="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest" workDir="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\work" />
I am getting the following error when running http://localhost/DBTest/WebContent/test.jsp

When running the same example, by creating a local server in Eclipse(creating new Server connection pointing to same Tomcat 6.0 installation) it runs fine without any error.Hi evnafets,
Wow, very helpful information, great insight into working of Eclipse. Thanks a lot.
I have one more question. I have a context.xml file under {color:#0000ff}E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent\META-INF{color} folder and that has the Resource element to connect to MySQL database:
{code{color:#000000}}{color}<Context path="/DBTest" docBase="DBTest" debug="5" reloadable="true" crossContext="true">

{color:#0000ff}url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/javatest?autoReconnect=true"/>{color}
{color:#0000ff}</Context>{color}As usual when running application in local Tomcat server of Eclipse, this data source works fine. But when I run the application on Tomcat, by starting Sysdeo plugin from Eclipse, the DBTest.xml file created in C:\Tomcat 6.0\conf\Catalina\localhost has the context entry as<Context path="/DBTest" reloadable="true" docBase="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\WebContent" workDir="E:\Deepa\workspace\DBTest\work">
</Context>The<Resource> element I have specified in the context.xml of \WebContent\META-INF folder is not taken into account by Tomcat and it gives the following error:May 21, 2009 5:20:04 AM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapperValve invoke

Problem with JNDI and JSP in Tomcat
Hi,
Basically, what I've done is to use the Tomcat administration web
application to create the DataSource, which looks like it populated the
server.xml (see below). I then try to access the testconn.jsp, and am
getting that "Name java:comp is not bound in this Context" error.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,

</Context>Hi,
First of all, you can find alot of information about this in the forum about jsp's.
I think a good thing to do is not to put your context tag directly into the server.xml file.
What you should do is create a context.xml file with the context-tag in it, and put it in the META-INF directory of your .war file. Upon deployment to tomcat5 this file will be extracted from the war, copied to the conf\enginename\hostname directory, and it will be renamed to contextName.xml.
I think you are developing directly into the webapps directory, and I believe you should avoid that and use the deployment feature of the manager web-app or you should use the deployertool from you ide or standalone ant.
anyway, for starters try to remove the context tag from the server.xml file as described above, and check out the jsp / jdbc forums for simular problems and answers.
good luck -

<!-- Defines a cluster for this node,
By defining this element, means that every manager will be changed.
So when running a cluster, only make sure that you have webapps in there
that need to be clustered and remove the other ones.
A cluster has the following parameters:
className = the fully qualified name of the cluster class
name = a descriptive name for your cluster, can be anything
debug = the debug level, higher means more output
mcastAddr = the multicast address, has to be the same for all the nodes
mcastPort = the multicast port, has to be the same for all the nodes
mcastBindAddr = bind the multicast socket to a specific address
mcastTTL = the multicast TTL if you want to limit your broadcast
mcastSoTimeout = the multicast readtimeout
mcastFrequency = the number of milliseconds in between sending a "I'm alive" heartbeat
mcastDropTime = the number a milliseconds before a node is considered "dead" if no heartbeat is received
tcpThreadCount = the number of threads to handle incoming replication requests, optimal would be the same amount of threads as nodes
tcpListenAddress = the listen address (bind address) for TCP cluster request on this host,
in case of multiple ethernet cards.
auto means that address becomes
InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostAddress()
tcpListenPort = the tcp listen port
tcpSelectorTimeout = the timeout (ms) for the Selector.select() method in case the OS
has a wakup bug in java.nio. Set to 0 for no timeout
printToScreen = true means that managers will also print to std.out
expireSessionsOnShutdown = true means that
useDirtyFlag = true means that we only replicate a session after setAttribute,removeAttribute has been called.
false means to replicate the session after each request.
false means that replication would work for the following piece of code:
<%
HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map");
map.put("key","value");
%>
replicationMode = can be either 'pooled', 'synchronous' or 'asynchronous'.
* Pooled means that the replication happens using several sockets in a synchronous way. Ie, the data gets replicated, then the request return. This is the same as the 'synchronous' setting except it uses a pool of sockets, hence it is multithreaded. This is the fastest and safest configuration. To use this, also increase the nr of tcp threads that you have dealing with replication.
* Synchronous means that the thread that executes the request, is also the
thread the replicates the data to the other nodes, and will not return until all
nodes have received the information.
* Asynchronous means that there is a specific 'sender' thread for each cluster node,
so the request thread will queue the replication request into a "smart" queue,
and then return to the client.
The "smart" queue is a queue where when a session is added to the queue, and the same session
already exists in the queue from a previous request, that session will be replaced
in the queue instead of replicating two requests. This almost never happens, unless there is a
large network delay.
-->
<!--
When configuring for clustering, you also add in a valve to catch all the requests
coming in, at the end of the request, the session may or may not be replicated.
A session is replicated if and only if all the conditions are met:
1. useDirtyFlag is true or setAttribute or removeAttribute has been called AND
2. a session exists (has been created)
3. the request is not trapped by the "filter" attribute
The filter attribute is to filter out requests that could not modify the session,
hence we don't replicate the session after the end of this request.
The filter is negative, ie, anything you put in the filter, you mean to filter out,
ie, no replication will be done on requests that match one of the filters.
The filter attribute is delimited by ;, so you can't escape out ; even if you wanted to.
filter=".*\.gif;.*\.js;" means that we will not replicate the session after requests with the URI
ending with .gif and .js are intercepted.
The deployer element can be used to deploy apps cluster wide.
Currently the deployment only deploys/undeploys to working members in the cluster
so no WARs are copied upons startup of a broken node.
The deployer watches a directory (watchDir) for WAR files when watchEnabled="true"
When a new war file is added the war gets deployed to the local instance,
and then deployed to the other instances in the cluster.
When a war file is deleted from the watchDir the war is undeployed locally
and cluster wide

could anyone tell me what the problem may be???
Note: When I configure my application on the Tomcat 5.5 and java 1.5 then it runs fine. But the problem arises when I compile my code on the java 1.4 and run on the Tomcat 5.0
Thanks in advance!!I am sorry that I forgot to tell you that I am running a struts application. Struts 1.1

Taglib: class not found in jar-file
I've got the following problem:
I whant to deploy a taglib to tomcat 5.0.25.
If I point to the jsp which uses the taglib I got the following error:
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to read TLD "META-INF/taglib.tld" from JAR file "file:/C:/Programme/Apache Software Foundation/Tomcat 5.0/webapps/taglibtest/WEB-INF/lib/gsa_prod3_db_taglib.jar": org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Failed to load or instantiate TagExtraInfo class: ch.gsa.prodass3.taglib.TagAddAttributeTEI
If I copy the taglib.tld out of the jar-file into WEB-INF and do the mapping in web.xml, I get this error:
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Failed to load or instantiate TagExtraInfo class: ch.gsa.prodass3.taglib.TagAddAttributeTEI
root cause
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: ch.gsa.prodass3.taglib.TagAddAttributeTEI
It seems like none of the files in the jar-file could be loaded.
Has anybody an idea?
Help would be very appreceated!
Greetings, Jonas1 - double check the class is in the jar file, in that path, and is spelt correctly
2 - restart Tomcat
3 - check the contents of the tld file - particularly the extra-info tag and class name for it. -

im using tomcat 5.0. I added all jar files...plz help me...Did you "Enable AppXRay" on the project?
In order to work with Workshop the project needs to be marked as web application.
If your project is already in workspace, then right click and select "Enable AppXRay" FYI: Workshop identifies web resources inside web-root of an application. A web-root of an application is the folder containing WEB-INF directory.
Ex:
- C:\MyProject\WEB-INF\web.xml - in this case MyProject itself will be web-root
- C:\MyProject\site\WEB-INF\web.xml - in this case site can be web-root
Once the project is enabled with AppXRay, you open JSP/XML files in Workshop Editor (with Design/Source, Design & Source tabs).
NOTE: Switch to Workshop perspective (Window > Open Perspective > other > Workshop)to see the default views. The jsp/xml files from AppXplorer view are by default opened in Workshop Editor.
As I mentioned earlier the following settings should be checked for live "AppXRay" synchronization:
- Window > Preferences > General > Workspace – make sure “Build automatically†is checked
- Project > Properties > Builders – make sure “Workshop AppXRay Builder†is present and should be checked -

I have trolled many forum posts and mailing list threads. I'm sure this question has been asked thousands of times (in fact I've read answers and tried to implement but come up short every time).
Q: How do you make fmt: message work with multiple bundle files?
I have simple test page test.jsp that includes a taglibs fragment. The page attempts to localize a key from a Messages bundle. I get the following as output:
???shoop???
This JSP has been deployed on Tomcat 5.5.23 and Tomcat 6.0.13 with the same result.
I have configured the web.xml many different ways, but currently it's per the 2.4 servlet spec. I have jstl-1.2.jar located in WEB-INF/lib. This is the only webapp library included my deployment. The rest is "vanilla" Tomcat.
I'm including the contents of the important files below.
What could be wrong?
test.jsp
<%@ include file="/taglibs.jsp" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

------------------Hi all -
evnafets continues to grow his collection of platinum stars. :)
The trick was to set basename in fmt:setBundle to i18n.Messages.Messages. It's not clear from the tag's javadoc, but it appears that the convention is
path.to.bundledirectory.bundledefaultfilenamelessdotpropertiesextension
So, for me
since I have the following deployment structure
WEB-INF/classes/i18n/Messages
Messages.properties
Messages_en.properties
Messages_de.properties
I had to specify
<fmt:setBundle basename="i18n.Messages.Messages" var="msgBundle" />
<p><fmt:message key="shoop" bundle="${msgBundle}" /></p>
to finally see
shoop
If I add
<fmt:setLocale value="de" /> before all that
I get
der shoop-a-loop
Ha ha!
I would mention that it is not necessary to add the localizationContext in web.xml. It's a convenience if you don't want to specify the default bundle in your JSPs. You cannot define more than one bundle in your web.xml.
I am working with a webapp that has many different bundles, so I'll incurthe overhead of specifying bundle basenames and vars.
Thanks! -
Error using IO taglib in BEA 8.1
Hello,
I am integrating a web application into BEA 8.1 and everything seems to be getting
worked out except for 1 thing. In one of my JSP pages I use the Jakarta io taglib
to send a SOAP message. When I try to run this JSP page I get the following error:
WARNING: ERROR: Caughtjava.io.FileNotFoundException: Response: '500: Internal
Se
rver Error' for url: 'http://[the ip]:8080/axis/services/vkb-resourcemgmt'
java.io.FileNotFoundException: Response: '500: Internal Server Error' for url:

at org.apache.taglibs.io.URLTag.doEndTag(URLTag.java:181)

The problem is not with the URL being a bad one but there is some internal conflict
between BEA and the taglib itself. I don't have problems when my web application
runs outside of BEA (just in Tomcat).
Thoughts??
Thanks - Peter

Looks like the URL is returning a 500 Internal Server Error which implies an
exception on the server side. Does the other URL also reside on WebLogic? If
so you might want to look at the server log and see if there is something
going on

Eclipse as a development environment with Jakarta Tomcat - Need help!!
Hello:
Subject: Eclipse as a development environment with Jakarta Tomcat
I am setting up the new development environment for my application (project). Below are the components involved::
 Eclipse 3.1
 myEclipse - EnterpriseWorkbenchInstaller_4.0GA_E3.1
 jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28 (Application Server)
 Sysdeo Eclipse Tomcat Launcher plugin - tomcatPluginV31beta
 SDK 1.4.2_08
 Microsoft XP sp2 operating system
I have no issue with creation of project structure in eclipse IDE, compilation, and deployment, but there are some exception upon running the application.
My project folder structure as follows:
MyApplication/
src/
Conf/
Web/
classes
taglib
lib
web.xml
 my application has few dependent projects, therefore I copied all the dependent projects final compiled classes (jars) to lib folder.
 I set all necessary classpath according to tomcat documentation.
 I created MyApplication.xml file under D:\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28\conf\Catalina\localhost\ folder with the below context
<Context path="/MyApplication " docBase="D:/xx/xxx/dev/src/ MyApplication/web" debug="0" reloadable="true" />
 I dont get any exception during compilation and deployment process.
 I would greatly appreciate if you could give me a tips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taglib problem : can't parse DTD ?
Hi,
I'm running Tomcat 4.0.1.
I'm trying to use the custom tags, but the tomcat server outputs an XML parsing error : 'Element type "tlibversion" must be declared'.
It looks like tomcat is unable to read the DTD of my tld file (if I change the DTD url, nothing changes)...
Here is my tld file :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>
<!DOCTYPE taglib
PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD JSP Tag Library 1.2//EN"
"http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-jsptaglibrary_1_2.dtd">
<taglib>
<tlibversion>1.0</tlibversion>
<jspversion>1.2</jspversion>
<shortname>first</shortname>
<uri></uri>
<info>A simple tab library for the examples</info>
<tag>
<name>hello</name>
<tagclass>tags.CheckAddMessageTag</tagclass>
<bodycontent>empty</bodycontent>
<info>Say Hi</info>
</tag>
</taglib>
Thank you for your help...
Xavier BugaudI think the issue is that your tld specifies the 1.2 DTD but then gives the 1.1 tag names such as "tlibversion" and "jspversion" instead of "tlib-version", "jsp-version". Either use the 1.1 DTD or change the tag names.
