Too many duplicates in library

Hello,
The duplicate list says there are over 200 duplicates in my library.  I have already deleted some of them through windows explorer.  Is there a way to refresh the itunes library so the deleted items don't show up in the duplicate list any ore.  Any other option besides clicking 2000 times to remove them 1 by 1, or deleting the entire library and starting over?  Thanks you any help you can give!  Kathleen

Apple's official advice on duplicates is as above... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls, such as lost ratings or playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • IPhoto 09 has way too many duplicates

I did not import twice, but iPhoto seems to be creating duplicates of many of my photos, and I am not sure why. I am not editing them, so that rules out iPhoto keeping a copy of the original and modified. Is there any way I can stop iPhoto from randomly duplicating photos? And is there a way I can remove those duplicates without searching for each and every one?

1 - iPhoto does not "randomly" make duplicates
2 - where are you seeing these - are they n the iPhoto window?
3 - if you are using the finder (or the all images smart folder) to see them then you (and this in not advised) may be seeing modified versions that are created because you have auto rotate photos selected on your camera - to stop this change the option on the camera
4 - if you are seeing them using the finder do not delete them or modify them in any way - you will corrupt your iPhoto library - and they are not duplicates - they are different in some way

  • Merging 2 libraries, too many duplicates...

Hey all, I'm trying to add my boyfriends iTunes to my computer so we don't have to keep going back and forth... he has a lot of songs I already have... I want to delete the duplicates from itunes... but I want to be able to keep track of them so I can put them back in his playlists later... He's got... quite a few songs... I'm not sure how this can easily be done...
I'm extremely obsessive about keeping things organized... if I had the time I'd go through, use shazam, and correctly name all 33,000 songs... but it's just not reasonable... I need something that I can eradicate duplicates quickly and still maintain his playlists...
If anyone can help me out and maybe give me an idea... that would be incredibly awesome!

Thats a really good question I would also like to know the answer to that. Not to hijack the thread, but is there a way to have 2 libraries share 1 song (or many songs) but not all of the songs? SOunds like that may be what the issue is any way.

  • The Wife has WAY too many duplicate songs in iTunes. How to get rid of them?

    Hello All,
We bought new computers in April and the Wife is still trying to work out the kinks. Not sure if it's Music Match or iCloud or something else but at least half of the songs listed in iTunes are duplicates. It would take her forever to delete these. First, is there a untility or App that could take care of this task for her? Second, why did this happen and how do I prevent it from happening again?
Given time to reflect, I am thinking buying either Music Match and/or iCloud (if one or both of these is the cause of the trouble) was a mistake in that it really f-ed up both our playlists (over half the playlists on MY new laptop are from her computer-Can't.Stand.More.80s.Playlists.) and song lists. We have two very divergent music libraries and had NO need to start mixing them up. Yet cross-polinate they did to both the wife's and my near-daily annoyance. All we really needed was the 2T Airport and time machine. Which we have.
    Thanks.

  • Have too many duplicates?

I've crashed my computer a couple times in the past, and luckily I've always been able to get on one last time to back everything up.  I often wind up with a back up of a back up of a back up... and have mutiple copies of the same song.  I know iTunes has a way to see duplicated, but I have enough music like the beatles where there are multiple, unique versions of the same song, it get to be a hassle.
I highly suggest getting Duplicate Cleaner (http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/duplicate-cleaner).  Since iTunes will save copies as songname#, it will number the copies and it becomes difficult to find them because they have different file names.  This program allows you to search files that have the same size within the same folder (like the music folder).
This isn't a spam post, just a genuine recommendation from someone who gets some annoying unique problems from my particular iTunes set up and the way I back up

I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background.
See also this User Tip for an effective backup strategy.

  • Too many duplicate files in time machine

How do I remove duplicate movie files from time machine

How do I remove duplicate movie files from time machine
What do you mean by duplicate?
Time Machine will keep 1 copy of a unique file and then us hardlinks in all the incremental backups to the single original.  A new file will not be put into Time Machine unless it is moved to a new location or the file in a given location has changed.
Please explain what you mean by duplicate.

  • Too many "duplicate" catalogs - how to clean them up

I have PSE5 operating in Windows XP. For the reasons I will try to explain below, I am awash with numerous copys, versions, etc of catalogs. What I want to do is to safely get rid of those catalogs I don't need/want and end up with only one catalog, which I want to call My Catalog. Obviously I want this catalog to be for the right images and all the up-to-date info about tags, tag palettes, for these images. Once this is done I want to do a backup.
I am almost clueless about PSE5's catalog functionality, e.g. are Save As catalogs linked, will deleting one catalog corrupt the one I want to keep, etc.?. Therefore, I'm very concerned that I will lose all or some of the info, that I have created in PSE5 over the years, when I try to clean up the mess I have made.
Since Adobe tech. support won't help - Adobe no longer supports PSE5, the manuls treat catalogs superficially, and I couldn't find any relative info. in the PSE forum, I am apealing to forum members for any assistance and guidance they can give.
Here's a reasonably complete explanation how I got where I am.
In anticipation of downloading the trial version of PSE8, I created what I thought was a backup of the catalog in PSE5 (I don't remember how I did this). I named this new creation My CatalogBU. But, now think that I only duplicated the original catalog.
I installed PSE8, and I assume it converted the catalog from PSE5. I did not uninstall PSE5.
I gave PSE8 a try, adding a number of images, which I tagged using the tag palette that came over from PSE5. At that point, I had to deal with a project of a large old collection of slides. So, I reverted to using PSE5- familiarity with PSE5 and uncertainty about what was to be gained with PSE8. I did not uninstall PSE8, so now I had two versions of PSE and a number of catalogs, with different info and locations.
I decided against upgrading, so I uninstalled PSE8 - since it was the trial version, tech. support could not give me assistance with managing the catalogs that were created.
I had the idea I would clean up the mess on my own, but before doing so I copied catalogs from the C:\ drive to my external F:\ drive. I also did a backup of one of the catalogs to the F;\ drive. I later realized that I had the older version of the catalog opened in the Organizer, so this backup is of dubious value.
When I thought about moving, renaming and deleting catalogs, I felt uncertain that I was up to the task. So, that is why I have appealed to the forum members for help.

Thanks for your comment. Since I posted my problem, I have spent considerable time learning how Adobe's Catalog function works. I found good advice and information at the forum elementsvillage.com.
The principal insight I have gained is that each Catalog is a separate entity. For whatever reason, I was concerned that deleting one Catalog would impact another catalog. With this matter cleared up, I worked out a strategy to cleanup and reorganize my catalogs. Hopefully others will benefit from my hardwon knowledge and will not be so intimidated, as I was. I feared that I would destroy all my efforts to tag photos, etc. because of doing something wrong working with catalogs.
What follows is the method I used:
    01. Use MS's search function to identify all catalogs, what they cover and where they are located.
In my case, only one catalog was current and up-to-date. The others could be safely deleted.
    02. Open PSE5 with the correct catalog.
    03. In the Organizer, right click in the tree window, and click on Show All Files.
    04. Highlight all images.
    05. Click on File>Write Tags and Properties Info., to insert their tags to each image. These steps (03-05) protect against loss of this data, by imbedding it with the image's metadata.
    06. Using a third party software burning program, create backup files to disks, for ALL catalogs found (as a temporary precaution).
    07. Using a third party software burning program backup the photos, preferably to an external hard drive (EHD).
    08. Create a Restore Point using MS operating system (another temporary precaution).
    09. Run an Adobe backup: File>Backup Catalog to the EHD, for just the good catalog.
    10. At the locations found from Step 01, delete each of the unwanted catalogs, but do not delete any of their path structures.
    11. If the good catalog is not in the location you want it to be, use drag & drop to relocate it to the desired location (most likely to Adobe's default location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalogs.)
    12. Double click on the catalog icon. This opens Adobe with this catalog in the Organizer. Verify that everything is OK.
    13. If you want to change the catalog's name, have it open in the Organizer.
    14. File>Catalog>Save As.Browse to the location selected in Step 11. Enter the new name in the File Name field.
    15. Now there will be two catalogs at the location, one with the original name, and one with the new name. Before deleting the original catalog, open Adobe with the new catalog and verify everything is OK. If it is, delete the original catalog.
    16. Create a new folder on the EHD for Adobe catalog backups. Backup the new catalog to this folder, using Adobe's backup function.
    17. When you are comfortable that the cleanup is sound, delete the temporary backups done at Step 06. and Step 09. I suggest running PSE5 for several weeks before doing the deletes.
I Hope this works for whoever is facing the same catalog issues I faced.
As an aside based on the many questions, doubts, and fears people have about destroying their catalog(s), I think it would be a real service if Adobe would research forums, theirs, elementsvillage, etc. and prepare an in-depth tech. support document addressing the many issues about catalogs, beginning with a thorough expalanation about how they function and do not function, etc.

  • How do I open a library book on a recently acquired Samsung Nook?  I get "too many activations" error. I have an active adobe digital editions and my other devices work fine.  Custumer Support was unable to get the new device activated.

I have a library book on the bookshelf of a newly acquired Samsung Nook but I cannot open it.  My other devices work fine but I cannot activate the new unit.  I get a "too many activations" error message.  Customer Services say I have a valid license but they deemed my problem to be a technical issue and referred me to the forum.  Thanks

Step 1 - by trial and error...
So far, I have been able to create physical files containing MP3 and JPG on the NAS using the Windows XP systems to copy from shared locations on the Vista and Win7 boxes.  This process has been aided by the use of a 600 GB SATA 2 capable hard drive enclosure.  I first attach to Win 7 or Win Vista and reboot to see the local drive spaces formatted on the portable device.  Then I copy files from the user's private directories to the public drive space.  When the portable drive is wired to an XP box, I can use Windows to move the files from the portable device to the NAS without any of the more advanced file attributes being copied to the NAS.  Once the files are on the NAS, I can add the new folder(s) to iTunes on any of the computers and voila, the data becomes sharable via iTunes.  So far, this works for anything that I have completely purchased, or for MP3's I made from the AIC files created when I purchased alblums via iTunes.
I have three huge boxes full of vynl records I've accumulated.  The ones that I've successfully digitized via a turntable attached to the sound card on one of my computers and third party software, have found their way to the NAS after being imported into iTunes and using it to bring down available album art work.  In general I've been reasonably well pleased with the sound quality of digital MP3 files created this way, but the software I've been using sometimes has serious problems automatically separating individual songs from the album tracks and re-converting "one at a time" isn't very efficient.

Just upgraded and iPhoto said it has to upgrade library but keeps freezing. Have tried it too many times now and I need those photos ASAP  HELP!!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    Sharon-
    Good idea.
    Back up first.
I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.
