Torrents

Hi
I know this forum isn't exactly for this kind of question. But can anyone explain to me simple what torrents are? How it works? Or direct me to a place that explains it.
Cheers!
Jim

  • How many users on router? run torrent

I share my router and I have "off-peak" internet time 2am to 8am - I needed a script to see if I am the only user on-line so that my torrents don't suck up the other people's bandwidth...
    This works:
    #!/bin/bash
    # should torrent run?
    # using a router shared by a number of people
    # If I am the only user or it is off peak time (or other concerns) then decide whether to run torrent

QoS means Quality of Service.  Basically it reorders or delays packets depending on priority, so that time-sensitive packets always go first, and unimportant packets like bittorrent can be delayed until there is no other traffic being sent.  What I specifally was suggesting here is that your use it to lower the priority of bittorrent traffic, so that you can run it all the time but it only uses spare bandwidth that isn't being used by any other service.
The only catch most routers can only do QoS on inbound connections which is mainly helps latency and not download speeds.  However, if your router is running linux it may have that ability.  Also look for the 'tc' utility or maybe you can install trickle.
This thread has little bit more info.

  • Closed port for torrent with no iptables.rules

I have a home system with internet connection over a router. Firewall in the router seems to be disabled. I had installed guarddog and selected all the protocols that I need. There is no iptables in deamons line of rc.conf nor there is any iptables.rules files. There are 2 files in /etc/iptables, empty.rules and simple_firewall.rules. So, I wonder if any firewall is working at all in my system since guarddog is a frontend to iptables (i guess) and also is there any need for firewall since almost all the ports are closed.
Secondly, the main issue. I was using ktorrent and it was working fine until a few days ago. Now, bittorrent is not working. its not connecting at all. I tried deluge from community repo and tested the ports with http://www.deluge-torrent.org/test-port.php?port=6881 and it gave me this result:
TCP port 6881 closed on 121.247.200.189
UDP port 6881 open on 121.247.200.189
121.247.200.189 seems to be the ip of my isp as I got a dynamic one.
I am able to reach surf net but not able to download using bitorrent, however, both is possible in windows.
Taking clue from forum, i did nmap.
    nmap on my router

@madeye, first of all thanks a lot for such elaborate help.
I used utorrent in windows and u r very much right that it uses UPnP. In deluge (bt client on arch), UPnP was there but disabled (shaded). Hence, I tried running utorrent using wine and it gave a error message "Unable to map UPnP port' and is not able to connect. So, UPnP is not working in my box.
Then I tried as you suggested "iptables -L" and it gave me the following results.

That means iptables is not disabled and that firewall rules are setup by guarddog.
I removed guarding using "pacman -Rns guarddog" and rebooted. Still get the same results with utorrent and "iptables -L" and also the port test shows tcp 6881 is still closed.
Removed iptables and now bt clients seems to be able to connect and it works; however, port test still shows tcp 6881 closed.

  • Cisco SA520 - Unable to block all torrents and Poor Performance

Hi, I have installed a Cisco SA520W Appliance at a Client who has about 40-50 PC's, the device has the latest firmware 2.1.7 and latest IPS signature (17) installed, the client is quite disappointed about the performance of the device as he believes Internet browsing access has slowed down substantially.
The main problem the client is encountering is that, he is unable to block Utorrent P2P software and this is not allowing him to retain Internet control from the SA520 appliance.
He had also commented on the fact that there does not appear to be a status monitor on IP usage of Internet access to pinpoint who at that time would be hogging up the bandwidth.
Any feedback, same encounters scenarios and possible fixes to the above issues would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Shawn

You might find this thread interesting regarding the router's performance with IPS turned on.  An SA540, and an access point, would yield slightly better performance.  That's what we use.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2022832?tstart=60
There are some older threads regarding the SA500 series router's ability to detect torrent activity.  You might want to dig them up and respond to them.  The Cisco folks were working diligently at optimizing the IPS engine's ability to detect different types of torrent activity.
There is no way to monitor Internet access usage at the individual IP level that I am aware of.  I suggest turning on network logging (to a syslog server as there will be a lot of data to capture) and monitor traffic that way.  Kiwi Syslog Server has a free version that your client could use.

Any time I try to down load something from Torrents an ad for MacKeeper pops up. It then doesn't let me down load it to my computer so I have neither MacKeeper nor anything from Torrents. It will not let me access the the client Transmission. How do I stop it from popping up and blocking my access to torrents?
    Thank you.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • How can I locate and delete torrent files from my mac

I recently deleted a bunch of old files from macbook air from a p2p website I use (vuze.com) when I checked back on my hdd it was still full, and loaded with 'other files' which I'm pretty sure are torrents. I'm wondering how I can find these files (because I can't seem to locate them with spotlight) and trash them? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For starters... you may already know this, but be sure to empty your trash.  You can use something like OmniDiskSweeper (free) to show where most of your space is being taken up.  It will list your folders/files in order of size.  This will generally make any folder which is excessively large show up right away:

  • I can no longer open torrent files with transmission without downloading them; I could do this easily before the most recent update, how do I make this right??

I tried to get a torrent file today, normally I tell firefox to open with transmission, today it wasn't an option. I tried to go to preferences and change it there but torrent files weren't even an option. Yesterday it worked fine, but after last nights update I can't get it to work at all.

Similar problem here. My Ical refuses to edit or delete events. Viewing is possible, though sometimes the whole screen turns grey. Adding new events from mail is still possible. The task-pane completely disappeared. My local apple technic-centre messed about with disk utility for a bit and than told me to reinstall leopard. I could of course do that, but it seems to me that reinstalling Leopard just to fix iCal events is a bit invasive.
I tried also tried removing everything, installing a new copy of iCal from the leopard-cd, software updates, all to no avail.
At the moment I'm open to all suggestions that do not include a complete leopard reinstall.

  • Disk error when downloading Vuze torrent

    Helloooo.
Twice now while downloading a Vuze torrent I get a note saying there's a disk reading error. This occurs at just about the half way stage.
On these downloads I have been downloading continuously. Is this significant?
Is there anything I can do?
I don't think I can download Transmission - 10.4 - (Many seem to enthuse about Transmission).
    Any thoughts from anyone?
    Thanks

How much free space is on the hard drive?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

    plz help

If you downloaded the correct version for your iPad model (and the different models have different ipsw files), then you should be able to navigate to it in iTunes by pressing and holding the shift key on Windows (command key on Mac) when clicking the Check For Updates button.

  • WRT54GS V6.0 Slow with Torrents running

    Hello,
    Current Config: WRT54GS  - V6.0  - Firmware Version: v1.52.0  (just updated)
    WAN info:
    All Manually assigned.
LAN - 1 static IP and 1 laptop on dhcp
    Issue:
Normal surfing and downloading is perfect, no issues on a 6MB WAN link. The only issue is when I start up a uTorrent program, then all pings and internet access either drops or goes very slow.
The load on the link is less then 1MB - so there is no issue with the torrent system hanging the link.
I believe the router is not closing open connections, or just is not able to handle the Torrent traffic AT ALL.
    Troubleshooting done so far:
==> Upgraded to latest firmware  (this HELPED, but did not solve issue - less ping drops with new firmware)
==> Tried torrents again WITHOUT ANY ROUTER, this worked pefect!!
==> Tried torrent on different port, same issue.
==> Tried torrent on both machines, no change (only I need to change the port rules on the router).
I do not think this is port forwarding related as I've the correct ports assigned to the torrent machine.
The issue only happens whilest any torrent program is open, it does not even need to be downloading or uploading!
I see a lot of related discussions on this issue on many web sites, but no one has offered an official solution. This is what I'm now requesting.
Router is less then 24hrs old, so I have the option to return it.
    Many Thanks,
    Joe Leavy
    Dublin

Just use DDWRT firmware and all of your issues with the WRT54G and WRT54GS will disappear.
My WRT54GS used to crash every 2 hours to 24 hours, having to Power cycle it every time. It will just loose connection to the internet and dropping Wireless connection. My WRTG4GS was upgraded to DDWRT third party firmware and has never dropped any connection since.
Too Bad linksys does not have a proper testing procedure for their firmware

  • Macbook air won't allow me to install any torrents, what do i do?

I have been trying to install uTorrent and my Macbook Air fails to install, what do i need to do?

Contact the Utorrent group about this.

  • How can I get Firefox to directly open a file (like a torrent) without saving it at all

It seems that up until about 3 months ago - I could get firefox to download a file and open it directly without saving it to any particular place. This is particulary useful for downloading say a torrent or, for that matter, any other file I wish to use within another program but do not need to save the file.
Now I have to download the file, chose where it will be saved, open the folder click on the file, and then delete the now un-needed file. A huge hassle.
I am sure I could do this until a few months ago. For some reason I cannot now.
    Please help

Make sure that the file has the .html file extension.
    That should be sufficient.
Windows hides some file extensions by default.
Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see file name without file extension.
You can see the real file type (file extension) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.

  • Suddenly can't connect to a single torrent tracker.

I'm not talking about peers/seeders or download speeds here, but the actual connection where I can see information about the particular torrent before downloading is even considered. I've never had a problem before, and usually download around 50GB a month. My internet connection is fine, my ports show they are open as usual. I've obviously approached my ISP about this, but just wondered if there was anything I might check that I haven't thought of, other than my ISP, that could possibly stop me connecting to the tracker?

I'm using Transmission, but I'd tried another app to see if it was that before posting. The thing is sig, it's suddenly just started working again. I suppose it could have been the ISP, but all they suggested was to reboot the router, which I'd already done. I have noticed recently that there can sometimes be a 30 second lag between opening the torrent and the info panel revealing the seeds/leechers, where usually it's instant. I didn't think anything of it knowing the nature of torrenting until just now. Could this be indicative of a modem fault in some way, and if so how would I test it? I'd assumed that internet traffic to the modem is the same - if it's working it's working.

  • What program should I use to open extension torrent?

I need to open programs with extension "Torrent".
I tried the free program u_torrent but I could not configure the ports for connection.
    Would anyone help me?
    Thank you.

Transmission 2.84 is easy to use.
Downloading torrents is an almost guaranteed way to cause problems on your computer from malware. Furthermore, most of what is downloaded by torrents is illegal.
