Trackpad's button woes

My button has been giving double clicks in a sporadic fashion for some time. However, it has really gone haywire in the past few days. It got so bad that no only did it clicked 2 times whenever it was pressed, but it locked in after a click. It was so bad, I couldn't use the computer any more, and had to add an external mouse.
I got it usable again, but not as it should. I followed the recommendations in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1171691&tstart=120, but still double clicks. It appears that Apple over engineered the button a bit, and probably used a cheaper switch than it should be. I guess they assumed it would never get dirty being upside down.
I added a small padding between the switch and the mounting, which gives a little more distance you have to press. However, the button doesn't work evenly now, but it helps a bit. I would also had like to add a small capacitor in parallel with the switch, but I don't have the dexterity nor equipment to do it.
In case any one has any ideas on how to get a workable button, please keep in mind I have reseted the pram, the nvram, the power manager, and have even tried a virgin system. So there is no doubt it is the button. Since this goes into software, it would be great if Apple could prevent a double clicking if these are within 100-250 ms(?). Also the control panel does nothing, since it allows to select the max time between the two clicks, not the minimum.

Tried cleaning it with some alcohol, and that seemed to have helped. After confirming that everything was working, I removed the spacers and it is back to how it used to be.

  • Loud Click when I press the right half of my trackpad mouse button

    Hello,
I have been using a macbook for the past year, and just recently I get a very load metal on metal click or crunching noise when I press the right side of my trackpad mouse button. I have removed the battery and looked behind to see the trackpad assembly and when I press on the corresponding side of the assembly it also make the same clack or click or bad noise. When I do the same to the opposite side there is no noise. My guess is that there is a spring on that side that has come undone, am I right? If so how do I fix it? I bought my laptop in the US, but right now and for the next few months I am living in Norway (no apple stores) is there a place where I can bring it to in order to get warrentied service? Will apple mail me the part? It ought to be fairly easy to fix. Thanks

I also had a trackpad 'click' problem ...my complete topcase had to be replaced. Although there may not be an 'Apple Store' in Norway, I'm sure there are Apple certified dealers there that can complete the repair. Here's a list of contact numbers...
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html
The repair itself (top case) should only take a few hours.

  • Squeaky Trackpad and Button

I have a new 14" iBook and when I use the trackpad and button, it kinda makes a squeaky noise. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it normal?

    Hey man,
I just wanted to let you know that I do indeed have the same problem with my 14" iBook.
I'm not sure on this, but I think this affects all iBook 14" models. At least it seems that way anyways.
I have just got used to the squeakyness, but to be quite honest I prefer not to use the trackpad anyways. I'd rather use a 2 button mouse anyday (Even though the 2 finger scrolling is cool)!

  • How to configure trackpad physical buttons in Mountain Lion

    Hi,
I've just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion on my iMac.
In Snow Leopard you could configure specific actions (e.g. to launch an application) to the two physical buttons in the lower left and right corners of the Magic Trackpad.  This was configured in System Preferences -> Trackpad, as far as I can remember.
I can't seem to find where these buttons can be configured in Mountain Lion.  I would have thought that it would still be under System Preferences -> Trackpad, but maybe it's moved elsewhere.
Would be grateful if someone could shed some light.
Worse still, perhaps the buttons are no longer usable with Mountain Lion—can anyone confirm or deny this?
    Thanks for the help.
    Ken.

Thanks guys, but my original post should have been clearer.  Can I configure the trackpad buttons in Mountain Lion in the same manner as in Snow Leopard without relying on third party software?
I mean, I could configure the buttons in Snow Leopard without third party software; now, all I've changed is the operating system, and it seems I can't configure the buttons.
Either I'm looking in the wrong place in System Preferences or Mountain Lion doesn't allow you to configure these buttons.  That's essentially what I'm asking.
I'd rather not rely on further pieces of software (to do something that was available in an earlier version of OSX).

  • Trackpad with buttons from the new E/T/W 450/550 to E/T/W 440/540

    Hello,
i was looking at the new 550 450 series and saw that Lenovo had returned to the old trackpoint buttons.
Also i've notised for the short time i was able to take the quick look that the size of the new trackpad + buttons is the same as the trackpad in the 540 series.
Also noticed that they didn't changed the keyboard, so the buttons are not connected to the keyboard as in the old ThinkPads, instead they're one module with the touchpad.
So i was wondering if i buy it as a spare part would i be able to install it.
Does anyone knows what are the exact sizes, what is the connection cable and etc.

    Yeah i found it on Ebay it says that it's compatible with E431 E440 E445 E531 E540 E455.
    And it's 65 $...
Do you have any idea who is the manifacturer of those... again Synaptics ?
So as for the driver problems, here is what is written on the page in Ebay:
"If you use for E431 E440 E445 E531 E540 E455, pleaes uninstall the touchpad driver and restart, then update touchpad drive(UltraNav n10gx25w) , go to the control panel--the mouse--thinkpad(The function of the set you need) , or contact us."
Do you know any other place from where we can buy an "accepting" drivers module ?
    Thank you!

  • Suggestion for trackpad "virtual button" area.  PLEASE!

Thank you for fixing the "clicks not registering" issue.
I have another problem that is quite frustrating, coming from a previous macbook pro. I am used to the two finger right click and often when I'm highlighting text I'm using one finger to move the mouse, the other to "click" and guess what? It right clicks. ANNOYANCE. Sure, I can only use one finger and click-highlight-drag but it's not natural to me. It's rahter annoying since I use my THUMB to move the mouse (as most users I imagine) and not my index finger so it's kind of inconvenient.
Another problem is that when I'm moving my mouse cursor and I want to click a button (let's say, a submit button or a hyperlink) I use my other finger to "click" the link and woops, the trackpad thinks i moved the cursor a bit. Minor annoyance when clicking on a large button, but major annoyance when clicking on a tiny hyperlink.
Here's my proposed solution that should be software implementable that will satisfy your loyal users who are still used to having a dedicated button:
Make an adjustable deadzone on the trackpad for acting as a mousebutton. Make it so we can choose a section of the trackapd to act as a button and only a button. Make it so that it won't move the curosr if I rest my finger on there.
It'd be so easy ( i imagine ) for you to implement as an option for your users. Just gimmie my mouse button back!

  • Trackpad/Trackpoint buttons momentarily disabled on keyboard keypress.

My trackpoint buttons are disabled for a second or so if I use the keyboard. This is not and issue with the trackpad/trackpoint movement itself.

    Hi Mookid,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that trackpoint doesn’t work when you use the keyboard.
Try this. Open up the charms bar, go to "Settings", and then click "Change PC Settings". Within "PC Settings", click "PC and devices". Click "Mouse and touchpad", and under the header "Touchpad" using the dropdown menu, select "No delay”!
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,

  • Trackpad center button problem

    Hi all,
I have a t420, less than a year of use.  Everything was working fine.  Suddenly, I was unable to use the trackpad and the trackball correctly.  It's like the central button to be pressed all the time.  Of course, physically that's not the case.  When that happens, all the other buttons are barely responsive.  I think it's not a driver issue because I have the same problem while I'm using my laptop in Windows and Linux.  I had to disable the track point in order to work.  If I enable it again, the problem arises instantly.
Is it possible that my problem to be a hardware issue?  I can't understand why it's happening this.  I take care extremely well about my laptop.

Take it to your locak Apple store and they will give you another one, I had the same problem.

  • Software based trackpad/mouse button issue

I have been experiencing a recurring issue with my the trackpad on my macbook when trying to select the "Close" icon in the tops of windows, and also when pressing confirm/ok buttons within system setting changes.
Basically when trying to click on the icon with either a tap on the trackpad of by using the mouse button, the "click" will not register. I can click and select other windows and icons on the screen, just not the close or confirm buttons. The only to rectify this is to click into another window, and then come back into the one that I wish to interact with.
Has anyone had the same issue and knows of a fix?

I am experiencing the same thing.
It seems what is needing to happen is for the 'mouse's state' to be emptied or resetted when onRelease or onReleaseOutside of an osx app button.
This is so annoying as it happens with some macs (like mine) and not others. In my case, I click on the red X and it does nothing. I click again and it minimizes. So bloody annoying.
I am using the keyboard more frequently now to close my apps, but I shouldn't have to. It's ridiculous.
Also it's happening with minimized items in the dock.
If I have a series of minimized items and I click on them in a row to restore them all, it will only restore the first one (or every other one) I click on and then I have to refresh my 'mouse state' by clicking on something else and then going back to the dock to restore (and I loop this procedure).
I tried this on the mac pros in the store, and it doesn't seem to be an issue.

  • 'Loose' trackpad / mouse button ?

Ok, I am realizing I am whining (no pun intended ) - and all in large I love my MacBook.
But I keep noticing the mouse button, while working fine, feels very loose, can be depressed just on one side, has a bit of a gap. I checked a few macbooks in the store today, and all the buttons are 'tight' and don't have any play (i.e. unlike mine which has a bit of play before it hits the microswitch).
Other than being a bit annoying - is this something I can go to the Apple store with? Since the button is' working' - I assume they'll charge for a repair? Also, is my button really that unique?! Are all yours 'stiff and tight' (like the old powerbook ones) ?!
Thanks for your opinions in advance
    dan

I have the exact same loose button problem with my Macbook - though I have to say the button is very responsive (seems they might have tried to lift it slightly in order to give it more tactile feedback, as people have been complaining of "mush" buttons). I tried to live with it but it is quite annoying since that button is used so often. Also my left side creaks when you carry the laptop or apply some pressure (as the side goes slightly in and out). I was thinking I might be being too anal about a creaking side and loose button and should live with it...
I have already replaced new Macbooks for a completely broken (unresponsive) trackpad, chip in plastic above keyboard including strange black blemishes/spots on plastic that can't be cleaned. All of them have some degree of "lift" issues on the left side too, but mine was so minor that it didn't bother me. Of course, the risk of returning is always getting an even worse one. So far, none have exhibited mooing, whining, or dead pixels.
It is very frustrating to hear people complaing of the same issues, but on a positive note, the Apple Store has been extremely kind and happy to make any returns and the process has been extremely speedy and no-hassle. Also, even with these hickups, I absolutely love this machine and in my opinion it is the best laptop out there. I just wish they spent more time on quality control.

  • Magic Trackpad Stuck Button

The power button in the magic trackpad is stuck and i can't turn on. Is there a way that i can get it out (fix it)?

I hate to say it, but it was only a temporary fix. Things so went back to the crazy selecting everything. I read some more, cleaned the MT with Windex even, but nothing helped. It must be faulty design or buggy software. I hope it's the latter and that it's fixed soon.

  • Trackpad and Button

I have a quick question. I have had my MacBook since June of 2007 and I am experiencing issues with my trackpad button. It appears to be loose and makes a loud clicking noise even when tapped lightly. Anyone have any bits of advise on what I should do to get it fixed? Thanks.

I had the same problem with mine. I had to have the topcase replaced ...it took no time at all. You'll need to see an apple tech, and of course reproduce the problem for them.

  • Right button woes with mighty mouse

I have found that the right button on my mighty mouse quite frankly isnt very good. The mouse only detects i have clicked the right button when my left finger is completely lifted off the left mouse button, if it is merely resting on the left hand button, then the mouse detects a left mouse click when in fact it is my right (or middle) finger doing the pressing.!!
Most annoying...it may sound minor, but retraining my left finger to lift up whilst my right is pushing down is proving very tricky indeed!!!
Any ideas??? Any kind of firmware update or anything??
    Anyone??

    Hello, Ben,
This forum is for older, pre-PowerMac G3 Apple hardware, and so probably not the best place for you to get help with your issue. I'd suggest you ask in the MacBook Pro forum and see if someone can offer a suggestion there. It's possible that you just have a defective mouse.
    Good luck.

  • Trackpad mouse-button click

My mouse button on my MacBook has broken on the right side. You have to push it really hard for it to work. Now the left side of it is getting where it does always respond the first time I click it. And sometimes i click once and it double-clicks on its own. Do I need to send it in for service or what, I have the 3 year protection plan. Will it be fixed for free because I have that?

Send it in. Your machine is under warranty so you can get it fixed for free.
I know some people with this problem have just bent the underside of the button or something like that to fix this but why risk this or put up with the problem if its under warranty.
