'Loose' trackpad / mouse button ?

Ok, I am realizing I am whining (no pun intended ) - and all in large I love my MacBook.
But I keep noticing the mouse button, while working fine, feels very loose, can be depressed just on one side, has a bit of a gap. I checked a few macbooks in the store today, and all the buttons are 'tight' and don't have any play (i.e. unlike mine which has a bit of play before it hits the microswitch).
Other than being a bit annoying - is this something I can go to the Apple store with? Since the button is' working' - I assume they'll charge for a repair? Also, is my button really that unique?! Are all yours 'stiff and tight' (like the old powerbook ones) ?!
Thanks for your opinions in advance
dan

I have the exact same loose button problem with my Macbook - though I have to say the button is very responsive (seems they might have tried to lift it slightly in order to give it more tactile feedback, as people have been complaining of "mush" buttons). I tried to live with it but it is quite annoying since that button is used so often. Also my left side creaks when you carry the laptop or apply some pressure (as the side goes slightly in and out). I was thinking I might be being too anal about a creaking side and loose button and should live with it...
I have already replaced new Macbooks for a completely broken (unresponsive) trackpad, chip in plastic above keyboard including strange black blemishes/spots on plastic that can't be cleaned. All of them have some degree of "lift" issues on the left side too, but mine was so minor that it didn't bother me. Of course, the risk of returning is always getting an even worse one. So far, none have exhibited mooing, whining, or dead pixels.
It is very frustrating to hear people complaing of the same issues, but on a positive note, the Apple Store has been extremely kind and happy to make any returns and the process has been extremely speedy and no-hassle. Also, even with these hickups, I absolutely love this machine and in my opinion it is the best laptop out there. I just wish they spent more time on quality control.

  • Loud Click when I press the right half of my trackpad mouse button

    Hello,
I have been using a macbook for the past year, and just recently I get a very load metal on metal click or crunching noise when I press the right side of my trackpad mouse button. I have removed the battery and looked behind to see the trackpad assembly and when I press on the corresponding side of the assembly it also make the same clack or click or bad noise. When I do the same to the opposite side there is no noise. My guess is that there is a spring on that side that has come undone, am I right? If so how do I fix it? I bought my laptop in the US, but right now and for the next few months I am living in Norway (no apple stores) is there a place where I can bring it to in order to get warrentied service? Will apple mail me the part? It ought to be fairly easy to fix. Thanks

I also had a trackpad 'click' problem ...my complete topcase had to be replaced. Although there may not be an 'Apple Store' in Norway, I'm sure there are Apple certified dealers there that can complete the repair. Here's a list of contact numbers...
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html
The repair itself (top case) should only take a few hours.

  • Software based trackpad/mouse button issue

I have been experiencing a recurring issue with my the trackpad on my macbook when trying to select the "Close" icon in the tops of windows, and also when pressing confirm/ok buttons within system setting changes.
Basically when trying to click on the icon with either a tap on the trackpad of by using the mouse button, the "click" will not register. I can click and select other windows and icons on the screen, just not the close or confirm buttons. The only to rectify this is to click into another window, and then come back into the one that I wish to interact with.
Has anyone had the same issue and knows of a fix?

I am experiencing the same thing.
It seems what is needing to happen is for the 'mouse's state' to be emptied or resetted when onRelease or onReleaseOutside of an osx app button.
This is so annoying as it happens with some macs (like mine) and not others. In my case, I click on the red X and it does nothing. I click again and it minimizes. So bloody annoying.
I am using the keyboard more frequently now to close my apps, but I shouldn't have to. It's ridiculous.
Also it's happening with minimized items in the dock.
If I have a series of minimized items and I click on them in a row to restore them all, it will only restore the first one (or every other one) I click on and then I have to refresh my 'mouse state' by clicking on something else and then going back to the dock to restore (and I loop this procedure).
I tried this on the mac pros in the store, and it doesn't seem to be an issue.

  • Trackpad mouse-button click

My mouse button on my MacBook has broken on the right side. You have to push it really hard for it to work. Now the left side of it is getting where it does always respond the first time I click it. And sometimes i click once and it double-clicks on its own. Do I need to send it in for service or what, I have the 3 year protection plan. Will it be fixed for free because I have that?

Send it in. Your machine is under warranty so you can get it fixed for free.
I know some people with this problem have just bent the underside of the button or something like that to fix this but why risk this or put up with the problem if its under warranty.

  • My palm rest clicks the trackpad mouse button!

Every time I put any pressure on the right palm rest above the optical drive on my 15" MBP C2D (with where the meaty part of my thumb would naturally rest), the aluminum flexes and clicks my mouse button. It's starting to bother me with random clicks when I least expect them.
Furthermore, if I press down on the right side of the palm rest near the right arrow key, there's a noise/feeling similar to how your shoes feel on a sticky, soda covered floor.
Does anyone else have this fit and finish issue?

No, although this does sometimes happen. Contact AppleCare and explain your situation and most likely you'll get it fixed.

  • Why don't my mouse button/trackpad work?

    Hello!
I've been enjoying my MacBook Pro since 2006, and while I had no intention of replacing it anytime soon, something just came up that's driving me crazy:
My mouse button abruptly stopped working three days ago. Mechanically it doesn't feel as though there's anything wrong with it; it clicks as normal. But the MacBook just refuses to acknowledge it's there. What's really weird is, when I plug a USB mouse in and use that, the trackpad acts like it normally would: moving around the pointer, scrolling when I use two fingers, etc. The only indication anything is wrong with it: it highlights everything I drag the pointer over.
However, if the USB mouse is unplugged, the trackpad does one-finger scrolling and highlights everything on the screen.
I'm hoping this isn't something mechanical, because I'm out-of-warranty and can't afford the high costs of repairs (I thought I had AppleCare still, but apparently not). Has anyone else encountered this issue, and is there any way I can fix it? I use my computer on the go a lot and can't stand carrying around a separate mouse.
    Thanks!

    Bard-kun,
    A couple of thoughts.
Firstly you might want to check that your battery hasn't started going "bad" and swollen, as this can cause a variety of trackpad and button issues.
Secondly, I'd try a PRAM reset (Shut down. Then hold down "command option P R" while starting up. Keep the keys depressed until the chimes have sounded at least twice).
Next, if the above doesn't fix it, I'd try an SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964).
If none of this does the job, then you could try heading to the "preferences" folder in the "Library" folder in your "Home" folder and deleting "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and restarting. Doing this may change other related customised settings however.
Have you installed any third party mouse or keyboard software? If so it would be worth trying removing or disabling it.
If none of the above resolve the issue then I'd be suspecting a hardware issue.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Right mouse button with the trackpad

I read that on the 17 inch MBP there's an option to imitate the right mouse button by clicking when having two fingers on the trackpad (instead of Ctrl-click). Can anybody say whether this is something unique to 17 inch MBP hardware or whether we can also get it to work on the 15.4 inch MBP's?

    Hello,
I asked this yesterday in another thread. Can someone
with a new 17" please check and see what version of
OSX you have. Is it 10.4.6? Or maybe 10.4.7 which we
could see in an update soon.
Apple will not have updated the OS revision number for the newer systems.
What they do, is update the "Build" of the OS version.
For example, when the iMac G5 came out, there was a custom "Build" version released with that machine (only on that machine).
Then, when the second version and 3rd versions were released, they again released custom build revisions for those machines.
These custom "builds" are essentially the latest OS available with a couple of tweaks to enable new features unique to that machine.
So, what they would see is a different "Build" number than the build number on the 15-inch systems.
This number can be found by clicking on "About this Mac" in the Apple Menu. Then, click once on the "Version 10.4.6" line where it is displayed in the box. The "Version 10.4.6" line will then change to a line that reads "Build XXXXX". On my Mac Mini with the retail 10.4.6 installed, it says "Build 8I127".
Clicking on the build number will then display your computer's serial number. Clicking on the serial number will then switch back to displaying Version 10.4.6.
This Build number will likely be different on machines released after 10.4.6 was available to reflect customizations to 10.4.6 that are unique to that machine.
Keep in mind that the build number also changes with each update to OS 10.4.x that you install using software update. So, this build number will only be helpful if you check it before any updates are applied.

  • My trackpad button is not as responsive as my mouse button...

My MacBook Pro's trackpad button is getting not as responsive as my Apple mouse button and I wonder if this is indeed a hardware problem...

My original battery and the additional one I bought as the MBP shipped both died a few months ago probably because of build-up of heat at the bottom enclosure as a result of prolonged use as desktop replacement. The three new batteries I now have are taken care of according Apple's guidelines on calibrating batteries and prolonging battery life. I believe they are OK. But there is just this time lag between when I press the trackpad button and a response is shown on screen. Nothing of the sort happens when I use my wireless Mighty Mouse. I really wonder if something went wrong with the trackpad button...

  • Mouse buttons and keyboard randomly stop responding on secondary display

    Hey,
I'm facing this weird problem after a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard:
In about half of the cases I'm switching to application windows on a secondary/external display the mouse buttons and Macbook keyboard are unresponsive. I have to keep clicking/pressing for some time or have to switch between applications to get them working, until they'll fail again after some time.
I tested it with two different external displays with VGA and DVI adapter, different screen resolutions, I tested the mouse and mouse software, both keyboard and mouse work fine with the same applications moved to the primary laptop screen, trackpad works fine too.
This occurred after the upgrade to Snow Leopard on a 2008 unibody Macbook. Updates to 10.6.2 didn't solve the problem.
I'd be happy if anyone could help me with this issue.
    Thanks

You do not provide the full model number but if it is an AMD processor you are seeing the start of video issues that plague that series. The freeze is caused by bad video memory which is a part of the video card in turn part of the motherboard. I have been getting a high percentage of people who do not respond back to posts so I am not going to write everything about your issue; it could be a book. I am happy to help further if you have any questions. There are some repair options but at the end of the day, you might want to consider a new laptop.

  • HP Mini- left mouse button is broken. warrany?

I bought an HP Mini about six months ago, and I have recently been having trouble with my left mouse button. You see, my left mouse button is loose, wiggly, and does not respond as well as it used to. IT is also not raised as high as it is supposed to be. My right mouse button, on the other hand, works like a charm. I think the metal contact inside the electronic button might be bent and might need replacement. Is this covered in my warranty? I haven't abused it or anything. I recall that I have at least a one year warranty.
Also: do I have to send it in to HP, or is the store authorized to fix it? If I need to send it to HP, I would do so in July.
My model is HP Mini 110-1118CA. I bought it from a Futureshop in western Canada.

    Hello LAHPUser,
I understand at times the left click button the touchpad will stop functioning.
Because this issue is sporadic and doesn't happen all the time we will try our best to correct the issue.
First thing let’s see what driver version you have for your touchpad. Access your device manager if your not sure how to get there click on this link,  once there go down to the section mice and other pointing devices. Expand that section then right click on synaptics touchpad, then left click on properties. You should get a window that comes up click on the driver tab and see what it says regarding driver version.
After that task click on this link which will take you to the most recent driver update and if the driver is older than what you see on the webpage install that driver.
Let me know what you get.
    Thanks
Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
Clicking the 'Accept as Solution' button is a way to let others know which steps helped solve the problem!

  • Powerbook G4 mouse button won't work

My wife has a titanium powerbook g4 and she has been having problems with the mouse button on the laptop.  You have to push it just right to get it to work, if you are lucky.  I wasn't sure if I could clean the button or if anyone has had this issue and had to replace it.
    Thanks for any info.

Try this - Reset the trackpad by placing your entire palm directly onto the whole trackpad for 3 to 4 seconds, and then remove your hand from the trackpad in one smooth motion.

  • Disable middle mouse button paste, but keep other functions

    Hello everybody,
I am proud to own a Thinkpad USB-Keyboard with a TrackPoint, attachted to a UltraBase with a x201 on it. But this keyboard has a little problem. When I want to scroll with the middle button and the TrackPoint it first pastes the content of the Clipboard and for example in firefox another page is loaded if there was a link in the clipboard. This does not happen on the Keyboard of the laptop, but only on the USB-Keyboard. And because I don't use the paste-feature anyway I tried to remove it by remapping the mouse buttons in .Xmodmap like this:
    "pointer = 1 2 3 4 ~"
    to
    "pointer = 1 0 3 4 ~",
but this only kept the scrolling function and disabled not only the pasting, but also the other functions like closing tabs.
I would like to ask you how it is possible to disable the middle mouse-button-paste-feature but to keep all the other middle-mouse-button related functions, like closing tab, open hyperlinks in new tabs and of course scrolling with the TrackPoint.
It would also be great if someone knows a solution for the misbehavior of the Thinkpad USB-Keyboard.
    Thank you very much

  • Suggestion for trackpad "virtual button" area.  PLEASE!

Thank you for fixing the "clicks not registering" issue.
I have another problem that is quite frustrating, coming from a previous macbook pro. I am used to the two finger right click and often when I'm highlighting text I'm using one finger to move the mouse, the other to "click" and guess what? It right clicks. ANNOYANCE. Sure, I can only use one finger and click-highlight-drag but it's not natural to me. It's rahter annoying since I use my THUMB to move the mouse (as most users I imagine) and not my index finger so it's kind of inconvenient.
Another problem is that when I'm moving my mouse cursor and I want to click a button (let's say, a submit button or a hyperlink) I use my other finger to "click" the link and woops, the trackpad thinks i moved the cursor a bit. Minor annoyance when clicking on a large button, but major annoyance when clicking on a tiny hyperlink.
Here's my proposed solution that should be software implementable that will satisfy your loyal users who are still used to having a dedicated button:
Make an adjustable deadzone on the trackpad for acting as a mousebutton. Make it so we can choose a section of the trackapd to act as a button and only a button. Make it so that it won't move the curosr if I rest my finger on there.
It'd be so easy ( i imagine ) for you to implement as an option for your users. Just gimmie my mouse button back!
