Traffic Manager versus Azure Load Balancer

Hi All,
We have an MVC5 app which we are planning to host either as an Azure Web App or Azure Web Role. The queries that we have is pertaining to load balancing of the same as follows:
1. When we spawn multiple instances of Web Apps or WebRoles, does Azure Load Balancer automatically kick in?
2. If the above case is true, then when is the need for the Traffic Manager? Is it used when instances are spanning across multiple regions?
3. Will Azure load balancer suffice my requirement if I am hosting my app only in a single region?
Regards, Saurabh

Hi Saurabh,
No, you would have to manually configure an Azure Load Balanced Set for Load Balancing purposes. You could refer this link for details on how to configure a Load Balanced Set:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/azure/dn655055.aspx
Yes, Traffic Manager allows you to control distribution of traffic to Cloud Services, Websites across different Data Centres.
If you are hosting your app within a Cloud Service, Azure Load Balancer should suffice for your requirement.
You could refer the following link for details on various load balancing methods for Azure Infrastructure Services:

I need two VMs to implement MySQL Cluster in Windows Azure. VMs allow configure endpoint load balance set for Mysql, but I did not find tcp protocol in Traffic Manager. Does it provide this service for database

    Hi,
Traffic Manager works on the DNS level and routes traffic between public endpoints that sit behind a common DNS name. So you can't use this for your scenario.
    However, You can implement
load balancing for VMs in another way.

  • Best Practice while configuring Traffic Manager for Azure Website

    Hi Team,
I want to understand What is the best practice while we configure traffic manager for Azure website.
To give you the base, Here let me explain my requirement. I have one website which 40% target audiences would be East US, while  40% would be UK and rest 20% would be from Asia-pacific.
Now, What I want is Failover + Performance based Traffic Manager Configuration.
    My thinking:
    1) we need to create 1 website with 2 instances in each region (east us, east asia, west us for an example). so, total 3 deployment of website. (give region based url for the website)
    2) create traffic manager based on performance and add 3 of those instances. that would become website-tmonperformance
    3) create traffic manager based on failover and add 3 of those instances. that would become website-tmonfailover
    4) create traffic manager and ?? don't know the criteria but add both above traffic manager here and take your final url for end user.
I am not sure (1) this may be the right approach or not (2) if this is right, in the 4th step which criteria we should select while creating final traffic manager round-robin/ performance/ failover?
after all these if use try to access site from US.. traffic manager will divert that to US Data-Centre or it will wait for failover and till that it will be served from east-asia if in configuration, east-asia is my 1st instance?
    Regards, Brijesh Shah

    Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for your quick reply. actually question is bit different. Let me explain you different way.
I was asking for recommendation from Azure Traffic Manager team. whether my understanding is correct or not.We want Performance with Failover.
So, One azure website we have: take an example todoapp. I deployed that in 3 different region. now, I want to have performance based routing as well as failover based routing. but obviously I can't give two URL to my end user. so, at the top of that I will
require one more traffic manager. So,
step 1: I will create one traffic manager with performance criteria named: TMForPerformance.trafficmanager.com where I will add all those 3 instances (all are from different region so, it want create any issue.)
step 2: I will create one more traffic manager with failover criteria named: TMForFailover.trafficmanager.com where I will add all those 3 instances (all are from different region so, it want create any issue.)
step 3: I will create one final traffic manager with performance criteria named: todoapp.trafficmanager.com where I will add these two traffic manager instead of 3 different region's website.
Question 1) Is it correct structure if we want to achieve Performance with Failover or Is there any better solution?
Question 2) in step 3, what criteria we should select? performance/ round robin/ failover

  • Azure Load Balancer - Query for VMs in rotation or removed from rotationq

From what I can tell, there is no way to know if any of the VMs configured as part of a Load-Balanced Set has been taken out of rotation. I see a PS script to set the Azure Load Balancer Endpoint -
Set-AzureLoadBalancedEndpoint.  But there is no way from what I can tell via
PS or in the Portal to notify or alert me when a VM is no longer part of the LB Set due to some issue. What is the roadmap to make this available via a PS Script, Azure Portal, or via SCOM?

  • How to setup Traffic Manager with Azure API Management

    Hello-
I have been trying to configure traffic manager as a Failover mechanism for Azure API Management (not sure if this is the correct terminology).
The gist is this: I have configured Azure API management to point to a set of Web API's hosted in a Cloud Service. I would like to use Traffic Manager as a Failover mechanism to route requests to a different data center, should the primary service becomes
unresponsive or goes into a degraded state.
When going through the portal, there is no selection that is available to configure API Management/Web API: the selections are Cloud Service and Web apps.
I've also looked into th Powershell Add-AzureTrafficManagerProfile using the -Type ["Any"] option with same result - it adds the endpoint but it is in a "Degraded" state.
I need to understand the correct way to accomplish this - I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong.

    Hi Shaun,
For most Traffic Manager applications, endpoint health is probed in the same way on each endpoint.  That's why Traffic Manager profiles have endpoint monitoring settings configured at the profile level, not the endpoint level.
It appears your case is an exception--you need to configure a different monitoring path for each of your endpoints.  To do this, you should use
'nested' Traffic Manager profiles.  Create a child profile for each endpoint (with endpoint monitoring settings particular to that endpoint) and then join them in a parent profile.  Endpoint health will propagate up from child to parent and should
give the behaviour you're looking for.
There's no downside: We bill only for the actual monitored endpoints and actual queries received (so no extra costs), and the parent-child link will be unwound within the Traffic Manager name servers (so no extra latency).

  • Load balancing in Azure PaaS

    Hi all,
I'm new to Azure and while our long term goal is to move our entire system into Azure, we have a small feature we'd like to try implementing first so that our infrastructure will be a sort of hybrid model for now. Basically I want to have a WebRole running
a WCF endpoint that reads and writes to a queue. One caller external to my system will call the API to drop off work.  My existing system using another method in the API to query for this work that's been dropped off. Pretty simple.
My question is about load balancing. If I were using an F5 or some other hardware based load balancer I'd throw that in front of the Web Roles setup in a round robin configuration and be done with it. if I had 4 instances of the web role and my services
were polling once a second (assuming I have few instances of the polling service running in my existing infrastructure) I'd pick the work up in a second or two. This is perfectly acceptable performance for this process.  However, my understanding
is Azure load balancing uses a hash algorithm that works like IP Affinity in a standard load balancer.... this won't work for obvious reasons.... what pattern should I be following for this work?  Also note, I'd like to have this geo-distributed as well.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi,
Perhaps, you could use Azure Traffic Manager.
Azure Traffic Manager allows you to control the distribution of user traffic to your specified endpoints, which can include Azure cloud services, websites, and other endpoints. Traffic Manager works by applying an intelligent policy engine to Domain Name
System (DNS) queries for the domain names of your Internet resources. Your Azure cloud services or websites can be running in different datacenters across the world.

  • Azure Cloud Service Scaling - do I have to configure a Load Balancer?

I'm a little bit confused by how scaling in Azure works. I'm using a Cloud Service and have 2 web roles running a PHP application. I can RDP on both machines and both applications run great on each machine. Also I don't have any problems calling the staging
    URL.
But I can't figure out if I configure scaling so that 2 machines run always, if I have to configure a load balancer somehow. Or is this already done for me?
In Azure VM's I had to create a load-balanced set endpoint for an endpoint, but what about cloud services?
And how is this done in the XML configuration file for my service? What if I don't do it?

    Hi,
Scaling is affected by core usage. Larger role instances or Virtual Machines use more cores. You can only scale an application within the limit of cores for your subscription. For example, if your subscription has a limit of twenty cores
and you run an application with two medium sized Virtual Machines (a total of four cores), you can only scale up other cloud service deployments in your subscription by sixteen cores. All Virtual Machines in an availability set that are used in scaling an
application must be the same size.
Windows Azure supports load balance for cloud services and standard websites, we just need to set instance count to more than 1 to enable load balance. For virtual machines, it needs to set up manually.
Please refer this link for Load Balance a Virtual Machine:
    http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/manage/windows/common-tasks/how-to-load-balance-virtual-machines/

Auto scale lets you set scaling limits and scheduling goals to ensure you are always getting optimal performance

  • How to load balance Agents across multiple Oracle Management Servers?

    Hi everyone
We have the 2 OMS servers in our OEM environment. We would like to set up our management agents to load balance over these 2 servers...Or if not load balance then at least set up the agents so they can access either/or OMS.
I've looked through the documentation and in google, but can't seem to find the answer.
Can someone point me towards the documentation please
    Thanks
    R

OMS is just an appserver with a repository. You can load balance the appservers with an F5. You can load balance the repository with RAC.
So ... your options for load balancing and resilience are :-
    1. one agent on each server, multiple OMS appservers load balanced, one RAC database (with dataguard standby)
    2. two agents per server, two appservers, two repositories.
Both architectures work. Option 1 offers the best load balancing and resilience.

  • Windows Network Load Balancing (WNLB) in Azure VM

Is WLNB supported in Azure VM?  If you have to use DHCP, how would you assign an IP (VIP) through the WNLB manager?

    Apology.
    Here is my take.
    1) I am assuming you will be running Azure VM in this case since you are bound to use Windows NLB. Then probably you want to set up Virtual Network. - This will ensure that the IP addresses that is assigned to each VM doesn't change.
    2) It really depends on what is your usage is for to use Windows NLB, but the price compared to using Traffic Manager in Azure is way lower than running a VM that is hosting Windows NLB.
Just my 2 cents and I would love to hear your feedback.
    Cheers.

  • Do we need to manually deploy the application at all region if we want to use Traffic Manager

    Hi Team,
I am little confused before I want to start work on Azure Traffic Manager.
Actually I have one site at East US. now I want to use Traffic Manager. so, I probably need to deploy the site on different region. take an example we deploy on East Asia and West US.
Now, we have same site deployment at 3 region. we can setup traffic manager based on loan balance/ round robin/ failover.
But the question here is Do we need to deploy the same site at all 3 region manually (one-by-one).
Through Visual Studio or FTP, we need to keep that deployment whenever we keep updating the site? Support we have little complex scenario where we create 3 traffic managers based on their each type (like load balance, round robin and failover) at top we
have 1 traffic manager where we have these 3 configured. each of these might have site in 3 different region then probably we will have around 1 same site at-least around 9 region.
So, whenever we have any changes, we need redeploy that on each region one by one?
    Regards, Brijesh Shah

    Hi Brij,
Traffic Manager is separate from the underlying sites.  So yes, you will need to manage the deployment of those sites separately from Traffic Manager.  How easy or difficult that is depends on what kind of site you are using (PaaS?  IaaS?
Websites?) and how it is architected (is there a back-end database?)
Traffic Manager supports the ability to enable/disable endpoints, which allows you to easily divert traffic away from a particular site whilst it is being updated.

  • Internal end points load balancing

I have a cloud service with a web role of 4 instances, having 2 internal end points. I found that for internal end points azure load balancing is not supported. My question here is how to configure my own load balancer for my web role instances and
if scale up happens based on CPU utilization can those scales instances included in my own load balancer. is auto scaling can be detected by my own load balancer.

What do you mean by 'your own load balancer' ? are you pointing to the Azure traffic manager?
If you have configured the auto scaling on your cloud service and if it is kicked in, azure load balancer will consider newly added / deleted role instances automatically.

  • Load Balancing with BigIP / SSL question

I have an oddball question. We're load balancing ColdFusion
MX7 across 3 servers using a BigIP load balancing server. We
decided to go the hardware approach and it has been great except
    for one small configuration issue.
We use a mix of SSL and non SSL pages, prior to the switch
from a single server to a load balanced setup I used to script that
would determine if a page that was supposed to be SSL had the
variable CGI.HTTPS turned on or off. If it was off, the page would
redirect back to itself with the SSL turned on.
The problem we have is that we followed BigIP's instruction
to secure the load balancing hardware instead of the three servers
running behind it. So what happens is that the traffic goes to the
load balancer port 441, but then the calls from the load balancer
to the individual servers is port 80. So even if a page is called
as HTTPS://... the coldfusion server says that CGI.HTTPS is "off"
since the traffic is port 80.
This isn't much of a problem, our SSL pages are linked as
HTTPS:// and the only problem would actually arise if someone was
to type in the URL and call it as HTTP rather than HTTPS.
My questions is this, does anyone know of a way that I can
detect if the page should be HTTPS and is not without changing our
configuration and putting SSL certificates on each individual
    server?

    Hey,
Well the load balancing with the BigIP device is really very
    amazing. I think
what i liked most was swapping out servers when their lease
    was up, through the
BigIP manager I just stopped all traffic to a server, shut it
    down, plugged in
the new one and turned traffic back on. It was really very
    easy.
The SSL stuff still gives me a headache to think about. but
    I should mention I
no longer work where I was, plus now I'm all .net C# but
    that's a different
    story.
I think if I was going to do this all again I would not have
    secured the bigIP
unit. It was nice to buy one SSL cert for all the servers I
    attached rather
than one per server, but getting the SSL sites to work
    properly was a headache.
We also use windows file replication where now I would go
    with like a pair of
Dell MD1000's mirrored for storage and just have tons of ram
    and cpu on the
front end units. Depends what you want to spend I guess. I
    think the bigIP unit
we bought was like 20 grand, i think they are cheaper now
    though.
    Hope I helped.

  • SAP GLM Print Request - Load Balancing of WWI server

    Hi GLM Experts,
I am using new GLM + module that generates labels based on Print Requests. I am unable to understand how I can load balance the WWI services when there are multiple label printing requests.
In GLM + we associate a WWI to a Print Station and which can then be associated with a printer. So in the configuration we are tying up a printer a WWI.
Also during label printing, if the scenario uses print request module, then the use need to select a print station and printer. What happens if the WWI related to the print station is down?
For example I have two services in WWI server GENPC1 and GENPC2. I created WWII and WWI2 as two print stations. I will associate my printer PRNWWI to both the print stations WWI1 and WWI2.
During label printing if the user picks and WWI1 and Printer PDNWWI and if the GENPC1 WWI server assocaited with print status WWI1 is busy and down I want WWI GENPC2 to generate the label?
How to setup the above load balancing or fall back? Please let me know.
    Thanks
    Pugal

    Dear Pugal
we are not using GLM + and I am not sure about the technqiue used there to handle load balancing. Regarding general WWI setup I assume you know this Note: EH&S: Availability and performance of WWI and Expert servers
On the top there is a further SAP Note abvailable which might be of interest. This is referenced here:
    http://de.scribd.com/doc/191576739/011000358700000861002013-e
May be check OSS note: 1958655; OSS Note 1155294 is more related to normal WWI stuff; but may be check it as well. May be 1934253 might help better
    May be this might help.
    C.B.
PS: may be check as well: consolut - EHS_MD_140_01 - EH&S-Management-Server einrichten
The load balancing of synchron WWi servers is donein the "RFC" layer, therefore you have no inffluence here, for asynchron WWI servers you can do a lot to manage the WWI load balancing by using "exits" etc.

  • Internal load balancer for ADFS, Web Application Proxy join problem

    Hello,
we deployed 2 x ADFS (2012 R2) behind a internal Azure load balancer.
In front are two WAP servers, which should be joined to the ADFS farm based on the internal load balancer IP.
Unfortunately the WAPs fail to join and sometimes after 5 tries it works. The problem is (based on the event logs) that the ADFS Servers dont trust the WAP certificate.
It seems, that during the join process the ADFS internal load balancer does not stick to one ADFS server. If we join the WAP directly (without the ILB) to one of the ADFS servers, everything works fine.
As soon as we try to join via the ADFS internal load balancer IP, the abover occurs.
Did anyone experience the same problems? How does the internal load balancer distribute the requests? Seems to be not sticky at all.
    Thanks for any Feedback,

  • 2 ISP load balancing and redundancy

    Hello!!
Our small company has about 40 branches spreaded within city. Branches are connected by optic wire supplied by our ISP. So in ISP our branches are located in one VLAN. From every branch we created VPN tunnel to our server room in central office. Central office is like a cetner point. If optic wire fails to central office, there would no VPN tunnels and no network to all branches. Moreover, all the traffice goes through central office.
Now we decided to pave one more optic line to our central office. And that will increase bandwidth and redundancy.
Private network topology: There are no default gateways and ip-addresses. For examle, at first branch I will plug computer directly into media converter and at the second branch plug another computer to the media converter. After that this two computers became in one network. And can assign any ip addresses to them.
What I have: our firewall do enough work, don't want to overload it. But we have some free ports in our new cisco 3750. The question is how to do load balancing and redundanccy? Can it do load balancing according to traffic? And how load balance incoming traffic? For example, connection was established from branche's router, how this router will choose through which line make connection? By the way, at all branches we use noisy cisco
    3700 series routers.

Sorry for upping 1 year old threat.
We talked to our Network Provider. They said "these two cables are coming from two different places, so there is no way to use etherchannel. You must use active-standby solution."
Relying on STP we just put two cables into 3750 stack. But with default STP settings, connection was very unstable, many packet losses and disconnections. So we found easy solution with "flex links", making one interface backup of the other. And only now I recognized that this is not a failover solution. Because, if network beyond media converter will down, link from media converter to switch would still up.
What could I do to make our L2 WAN redundant? Are there any additional STP settings.
