Transaction halts when inserting Blobs

Hi everyone,
I have a transaction which includes inserting 5 records into a table, which has a Blob column. I'm trying to insert pdf files in that column.
The tables are in an oracle 10g database.
When i execute this transaction via my J2EE application, which uses Hibernate for persistence, the system halts when i try to commit the transaction.
I've checked rollback segment size and that doesn't seem to be the problem.
When i run the same transaction in PL/SQL, connecting with the same oracle user, the transaction runs and commits in less than one second.
Do you guys think this could be a problem with my oracle instance? When i query V$Lock, there are 15 locks related to that session. one of type TX and 14 of type TM.

When i execute this transaction via my J2EE application, which uses Hibernate
for persistence, the system halts when i try to commit the transaction.
When i run the same transaction in PL/SQL, connecting with the same
oracle user, the transaction runs and commits in less than one second.
Do you guys think this could be a problem with my oracle instance? let me get this straight. You say it works when you use PL/SQL but doesn't work when you use Hibernate and you are asking if the problem is with Oracle? Why on earth would you think that the problem might lie in the bit which you say does work (i.e. Oracle) rather than the bit which doesn't work (i.e. Hibernate).
Cheers, APC

  • Connection reset when inserting file to BLOB column

    Friends,
    When inserting a file to a BLOB clomun and the file is more than 1KB, I receive the following message: java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Connection reset
    The code is this:
    int fileLength = (int)file.length();
    System.out.println("File length: "+fileLength);
    int cod = (int)(Math.random() * 1000);
    String sql = "INSERT INTO BLOB_TABLE VALUES(?,?)";
    try {
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(file);
    PreparedStatement pstmt = connection.prepareStatement(sql);
    pstmt.setInt(1, cod);
    pstmt.setBinaryStream(2, fis, fileLength);
    pstmt.executeUpdate();
    System.out.println("File insert sucess!");
    connection.close();
    Does anybody know what this can be? My database is oracle.
    Thanks!

    When you create objects on the database they are stored in the data dictionary by default in UPPER case.
    So in this line:
    src_loc bfile := bfilename('example_lob_dir', 'example.gif'); -- source location
    you need to reference the name of the directory object in upper case. e.g.
    src_loc bfile := bfilename('EXAMPLE_LOB_DIR', 'example.gif'); -- source location
    ;)

  • SQLite3 and BlobsI am having trouble learning how insert blobs into SQLite

    I am having trouble learning how insert blobs into SQLite for the iphone. Is there a way to insert a blob into sqlite3 from the command line? I know it was possible with sql using
    INSERT INTO temponly(name , pic) values( 'velan',
    load_file('e:/mysql/images/Click.gif')) ;
    but I don't think load_file is supported on sqlite.
    Also, I need to insert the blobs from my iphone app. I saw a C program called eatblob.c which goes through the following just to INSERT a blob into sqlite
    1. read the jpeg image file into memory , doing appropriate malloc based on size
    2. prepare an sqlite statement with ? values
    3. bind the malloc'd memory to the ?
    4. execute an sqlite step
    etc. etc. etc....
    This is quite a bit of work just to do an INSERT ???
    The reason I'm doing this is my iphone app has a lot of tiny (20x20) images that get downloaded to the phone periodically from the server. Plus, there are a number of images that come loaded with the application. I was going to save all of these in SQLite. So, I need the command line tool to load up the initial images that come with the app, then I need code to download the images from the server and load them into the database. Of course, reading them out is necessary!
    Please help if you can!? Its late..and I'm blurry eyed from googling SQLIte3 blobs...

    Thank you for your quick reply Liam! You know, I checked the web forms list when I got that error message and the form isn't there. I was having trouble the other day when another of my forms kept getting deleted.
    Sorry if this is a stupid question (I'm a BC newbie) but I want to be sure so I can get this project finished... The proper workflow would be to create this form myself in Web Forms then insert it into the Registration - Buy template using the modules toolbox?
    Thanks to you I may get this done on time still... if my PayPal set up works

    can any one help me?
    Regards,
    Ramya.S

    If u want to put commit on trigger use pragma
    autonomous_transaction.what it does,it leave the main
    transaction and commit the second transaction.Which can lead to logic problems and corruption of your business data if not used extremely carefully.
    If you start transaction 1 and during that write some other data as transaction 2 using autonomous transactions and then subsequently find that there is an error or some reason not to commit transaction 1 then you cannot automatically roll back transaction 2 and would have to take care of it manually.
    I see too many occurences of developers using autonomous transaction all over the place just because they want to get the data written to the database and then they're wondering why there is so much clutter in their data and the database integrity is poor from a business/logical point of view. The first thing any good design includes is a knowledge of the business transactions and when data should be committed and what the implications of using autonomous transactions are.

  • Inserting Blob over db link issue

    Hi,
    We have a customer who has a db link which links from a 9.2.0.5.0 oracle database to a 10.2.0.2.0 oracle database. We also have the exact same setup here internally (9.2.0.5.0 -> 10.2.0.2.0). The issue is that when we try to do a SELECT FROM table (INSERT INTO table@dblink); on our customers system the row is inserted correctly apart from one column which is of type BLOB. No errors are raised but the content of the BLOB field is always empty, all other fields are inserted correctly.
    When we try the same thing on our system internally, the BLOB inserts across the db link fine. To add further complication on both our system and our customers system we can successfully select blob content from the 10g database to the 9i database with no problems.
    It appears that the problem is only when inserting from the 9i database to the
    10g database, and only on our customers system. We cannot replicate this issue.
    This has always worked on our system, we have only ever had brief intermittent
    success with their system and we don't know why.
    Has anyone had similar experiences or problems when using dblinks and blobs?
    Does anyone know if we can enable debug/trace in a way such that it will capture the unsuccessful BLOB insert?
    Could there potentially be any additional contributing factors, or operating system/network related influences that are preventing the BLOB data from being inserted?
    If anybody has any relevant answers to any of these questions we would really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lee.

    Hi, could anyone help me with this?

  • Inserting BLOBs Programmatically

    Is it possible to insert BLOBs programmatically?
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/jdbc2dot0/inserting.html
    has details on this, but it appears to be at odds with the "empty_blob()" mechanism used by oracle, which requires an explicit insert statement.
    Thanks,
    Sanjay

    Although jdbc can't immediately see how the Blob/Clob needs to be implemented the database implementors should. The sequence should be as you suggest: create a new blob, write the data to it then store the OID in the database with a PreparedStatement.
    Because the Blob needs to be database implementation specific new Blobs should be created from the Connection object. In the typical case writing to the Blob should write straight to the database. Copying block values from one record to another should just involve copying the OID.
    As I read the Blob class description it should mean that the actual data isn't moved to or from the client unless you open a stream on it.
    Looking at the postgres implementation source it's pretty crude, in fact whereas retrieving a blob works as I suggested; no reads from the database until you open the stream, when you write the blob back to the database it's creating a new OID every time. I'd assumed it would retrieve the OID from the Blob you passed to PreparedStatment.setBlob actually it creates a new OID and copies the data byte by byte (icky).
    Looks, in fact, as if I can create a fake Blob with nothing but a getBinaryStream method.
    setBinaryStream/setAsciiStream doesn't work properly because it seems to decide whether the field is a blob purely based on the implementation version of postgres, without regard for the field type. (I suppose you can't judge the field type in a PreparedStatement).

  • PDF Size is huge when inserting an image on every page

    Hello,
    I've got a little problem when inserting an image in a crystal report and then exporting it to PDF.
    We're using Crystal Report XI and we've designed the report with a sub-report that gets an image from a database field and put this image on every page of the report (it's just a logo for every page).
    This image is a JPEG file with 32KB size.
    The exported report is about 1000 pages and we're dealing with an issue because of that. Sometimes the report won't generate giving a OutOfMemory Exception (altough we've defined MinHeap/MaxHeap to 512M).
    We also find this curious :
    - A generated pdf report with the image on every page totals 100MB size (we would expect something like 32KB*100pages=32000KB/1024KB=31.25MB ?) : Depending on the number of pages, could give OutOfMemoryError.
    - A generated pdf report without the image on every page totals 1.8MB size. : No OutOfMemoryError problem here.
    Do you know of any way to optimize this, reducing the pdf size and ?
    Thank you very much.
    Eduardo Andrade (GEDI, S.A.)

    Hello Ted Ueda,
    Thank you for your answer, I was suspecting that...
    Since this is an obvious problem, do you know if there is another way of including an image in the report in a more efficient way ? For instance, include the image, only on the first page and on the rest of the pages just include a link to that image?
    I've searched in here : https://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/x/JwBmBQ , but did not find anything close to this...
    Thank you.
    Best Regards,

    Hello Durga,
    from the error what I understood is lt_key_values is a sorted table and you are trying append a new line to it. Incase of sorted table you need to use the INSERT statement and not the APPEND statement.
    INSERT lw_key_value INTO table lt_key_values.

  • Literal too long when inserting 4000 chars to long or clob

    How to avoid getting the 'literal too long' error when inserting a string >4000 chars to a long or clob field?

    A string literal can only be 4000 characters. To insert into a LOB, you need to use the dbms_lob package.

    You should report this in a service request on http://metalink.oracle.com.
    It is a shame that you put all the effort here to describe your problem, but on the other hand you can now also copy & paste the question to Oracle Support.
    Because you are using 10.2.0.3; I am guessing that you have a valid service contract...

  • HT1567 Itunes 10.6.1.7 is not recognising an Audio CD when inserted in the drive. This means I connot import any CD's. What could be wrong?

    iTunes 10.6.1.7 is not recognising an audio CD when inserted in the drive. This means that I cannot import CD's. It used to work but since installing other software iTunes does not see the audio CD and will not open the drive when "eject disc" is selected from the controls menu.

    Check the drive letter of your CD drive.  iTunes doesn't seem to work properly with CD drives if they are mapped to the letters A or B.  Use Disk Management tool in windows to change to a different letter and this will fix it (if this is the cause!).
