Transaction log usage grows due to replication even if I don't use replication at all

Hi
The transaction log usage keeps growing a lot on my user database since few days back. the database is in full recovery model and I do transaction log backups every 10 minutes. The DB was part of Database Mirroring but I removed it. The usage was controlled
for many years by the backups but something happened that is messing up the transaction log
this is DBCC OPENTRAN
Transaction information for database 'MyDB'.
Replicated Transaction Information:
        Oldest distributed LSN     : (0:0:0)
        Oldest non-distributed LSN : (1450911:6823:1)
DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.
log_reuse_wait_desc reports REPLICATION
the funny thing is that I am not using replication at all. I am using CDC.
To reduce the transaction log usage I run below statement every day since the problem started
EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL,
    @numtrans = 0, @time = 0, @reset = 1
Any idea what should I do to solve this problem and be back on a normal situation?
BTW, The server is SQL 2012 (11.0.2383)

CDC uses the replication log reader agent and if you manually ran sp_repldone like that you lost information in your CDC capture.  If the capture job can't keep up with the workload or is not running for CDC, you would have the exact problems you describe.
If you execute sp_repldone like that, you might as well disable CDC.

  • Transactional log file grow

    hello,
how we will solve the problem in this scenario,
    1) I configured mirroring
2)my mirror database is full & not available to take any more transactions from principle
    3) so, that transaction log is growing up in principle.

Have you ever done a trx log backup on the principle?
No, I have not done trx log backup on the principle.
ok I will take log backup
then  I can see that mirroring is paused or suspended ,I can resume mirroring .
what would happen if there is no space in mirror database?
whether I need to reconfigure my mirroring by dropping mirror database or else can I add any disk space to mirror database?

Since I can not log in bug report page, not even getting an error message, I'll write all my issues with ios8 here... I have an iphone 4S and I did the last update. Now I am in trouble.
    1. When I move the "sound on/off" button, I get it buzzing 10 times before the setting is changed and I can do anything else, just not reacting to the round button on screen touches.
    2. Impossible to copy text from most websites into notes.
    3. Impossible to delete an email account in settings.
    4. Uses up the battery twice as fast as before. I have "update apps" setting turned off, just reading a couple of mails, making a couple of photos and open maps apps twice a day, and the battery is dead well before the evening.
    5. Got extremely slow, and it was getting slower and slower with every system update.
I'm sure I forgot something... But well, that already a lot.

Well, actually number 3 in my list is not true any more, I just tried to delete my account 15 times, then I've written my post, then half an hour later my Settings finally updated my accounts list. Whohoo
I did not try restoring it yet, thank you for the link!

  • HT3576 I can't tweet from the notification center, even if I don't use an emoji!

I just got the iphone 5 last week and not once have I been able to tweet using the notification center. I upgraded from the 4s so I know how to use it, and I've gotten really used to using it rather than having to open the app and go in and wait for it to load. But every time I try to tweet it says "Tweet cannot be sent because the connection to twitter has failed" I uninstalled Twitter and reinstalled it and relogged in, turned everything off then on again and it's still not working.
Anyone else know how to fix this? And don't say "hit try again over and over" because eventually it stops trying and the tweet actually doesn't send, it just lets you think it does.

Hi Donis, and a warm welcome to the forums!
However when holding down the C key the computer still boots off the HD.
Is Firmware password protection in Mac OS X setup...

The disk I am using is marked Power Mac G4 Mac OS version 10.2, however the read me file said it should work for the powerbook.

The patch Matt is tracking has been issued, but Beta has not been rebuilt since the patch landed. You can get the patch for testing at https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/2014-10-23-03-02-02-comm-central/thunderbird-36.0a1.en-US.win32.installer.exe which is a nightly development build. Make sure you backup your THunderbird profile data before using it.

  • HT1229 Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD? Will it work the same way after moving onto an external HDD? do I then need to have the external connected at all times, even when I don't use iPhoto?

I have a macbook pro, but the amount of pictures I have now exceeds 500GB
I want to have all the pictures in iPhoto, so I could see them and edit them in iPhoto.
Which means... I need the iPhoto file folder in an external HDD to use iPhoto that way.
Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD?
Will it work the same way, as if the iPhoto folder is on the internal drive?

    yes
    yes
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Exchange 2010 SP3, RU5 - Massive Transaction Log File Generation

    Hey All,
I am trying to figure out why 1 of our databases is generating 30k Log Files a day! The other one is generating 20K log files a day. The database does not grow in size as the log files are generated, the problem is log file generation.
I've tried running through some of the various solutions out there, reviewed message tracking logs, rpc client access logs, IIS Logs - all of which show important info, but none of which actually provide the answers.
I Stopped the following services to see if that would affect the log file generation in any way, and it has not!
    MS Exchange Transport
    Mail Submission
    IIS (Site Stopped in IIS)
    Mailbox Assistants
    Content Indexing Service
With the above services stopped, I still see dozens (or more) log files generated in under 10 minutes, I also checked mailbox size reports (top 10) and found that several users mailboxes were generating item count increases for one user of
about 300, size increases for one user of about 150Mb (over the whole day).
I am not sure what else to check here? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Robert
    Robert

Hmm - this sounds like an device is chewing up the logs.
If you use log parser studio, are there any stand out devices in terms of the # of hits?
And for the ExMon was that logged over a period of time?  The default 60 second window normally misses a lof of stuff.  Just curious!
    Cheers,

    Rhoerick,
Thanks for the response. When checking the logs the highest number of hits were the (Source) Load Balancers, Port 25 VIP. The problem i was experience was the following:
    1) I kept expecting the log file generation to drop to an acceptable rate of 10~20 MB Per Minute (Max). We have a large environment and use the exchange sevrers as the mail relays for the hated Nagios monitoring environment
    2) We didn't have our enterprise monitoring system watching SMTP traffic, this is  being resolved.
    3) I needed to look closer at the SMTP transport database counters, logs, log files and focus less on the database log generation, i did do some of that but not enough of that.
    4) My troubleshooting kept getting thrown off due to the monitoring notifications seeming to be sent out in batches (or something similar) stopping the transport service for 10 ~ 15 minutes several times seemed to finally "stop the transactions logs
from growing at a psychotic rate".
    5) I am re-running my data captures now that i have told the "Nagios Team" to quit killing the exchange servers, with their notifications, sometimes as much as 100+ of the same notifications for the same servers, issues. so far at a quick glance
the log file generation seems to have dropped by about 30%.
Question: What would be the best counters to review in order to "Put it all together"? Also note: our Server roles are split, MBX and CAS/HT.

NO..log files are incremental and connected. If any log file is missing you cannot restore  to point which comes after backup which is lost or damaged.Like u miss 3 AM trn log backup now even if you have 6,9,12 AM trn log backups its of no use .

  • Very high transaction log file growth

    Hello
Running Exchange 2010 sp2 in a two node DAG configuration.  Just recently i have noticed a very high transaction log file growth for one database. The transaction logs are growing so quickly that i have had to turn on circular logging in order to prevent
the log lun from filling up and causing the database to dismount. I have tried several things to try find out what is causing this issue. At first i thought this could be happening because of virus, an Active Sync user, a users outlook client, or our salesforce
integration, howerver when i used exmon, i could not see any unusual high user activity, also when i looked at the itemcount for all mailboxes in the particular database that is experiencing the high transaction log file growth, i could not see any mailboxes
with unusual high item count, below is the command i ran to determine this, i ran this command sever times. I also looked at the message tracking log files, and again could see no indication of a message loop or unusual high message traffic for a
particlar day. I also followed this guide hopping that it would allow me to see inside the transaction log files, but it didnt produce anything that would help me understand the cause of this issue. When i ran the below tool againts the transaction log files,

I am starting to run out of ideas on how to figure out what is causing the log file build up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have users with iPhones or Smart Phones using ActiveSync then one of the quickest ways to see if this is the issue is to have users shot those phones off to see if the problem is resolved.  If it is one or more iPhones then perhaps look at
what IOS they are on and get them to update to the latest version or adjust the ActiveSync connection timeout.  NOTE: There was an issue where iPhones caused runaway transactions logs and I believe it was resolved with IOS 4.0.1
There was also a problem with the MS CRM client awhile back so if you are using that check out this link.

I would also deploy some tracking methods to see if you can hone in on the culprits, i.e. If you want to see if the problem is coming from an internal Device/Machine you can use one of the following
    MS USER MONITOR:

And this is a great article as well

Also check out ExMon since you can use it to confirm which mailbox is unusually active , and then take the appropriate action.

  • Transaction logs after large mailbox archive?

    Hi all,
I've recently run a large mailbox archive on our mailbox database and I'm concerned about the transaction log files that will be produced.
Some info: We run a single Exchange server on Windows Server 2008, on a single hard disk. The system is run on VMWare with a full Exchange-aware backup run every night. Database file is currently 194GB with about 90GB whitespace.
I archived 20GB worth of email from a mailbox. My problem is that the hard disk with the database and log files on it only has 12GB of free space, so when the Recoverable Items folder is cleared 2 weeks later, is there going to be 20GB of transaction logs
with nowhere to go? Will I have to organise some additional storage to give the log files some room?
    Appreciate any help.

    Hi,
I notice that there only 12 GB free disk in your mailbox server, it may be too small.
Exchange will not generate much more transaction log when delete Recoverable Items, however it also not delete previous transaction log. Meanwhile, Exchange will generate new log when mail flow and move message to archive database, the size of transaction log
only grow. Therefore, I recommend to add additional disk or full backup for your database on schedule to truncated some unrequired logs.
Here’s the article about Mailbox Server Storage Design, for your reference:

  • How to TRUNCATE transaction log of a SQL Server database?

    Hello All,
I hav installed BW 3.5 on Windows / MS SQL database.
Now my transaction log is growing very high in my Quality & Production server. Please guide me how can i truncate its size.
In PRD currently log size has reached 140 GB.
Wat shd i do system is becoming too slow.
    Regards & Thanks,
    Ankita.

    Ankita,
Do you backup your transaction logs?  That should be standard practice in a production enivorment at the least.  The backup should remove the data and shrink the file, or remove enough data for you to manually shrink it.
A large transaction log will not slow down your system.  It is a file that is only appended to and has no real bearing on the speed of the database (unless its on the same physical disk and there is I/O contention not related to size).
Depending your your BI implentation a 140 GB log file is not out of the ordinary, but it needs to be managed with backups and administration.
    Daniel,
If you backup the transaction file to tape, set the target size to 60 GBs, and run the DBCC Shrinkfile statement provided above you can decrease the size of your log file without data loss and without compromising your backup strategy.
There is no single prerequisite for truncating a log.  It is a last resort if there is no other option and a backup is impossible.  It should be avoided whenever possible because you destroy your recovery chain.

  • Transaction Logs Troubleshooting

    Hi,
I have recently deployed a brand new Exchange 2013 scenario for a customer and the exchange system is working well but I have found the transaction logs are growing at an extra ordinary rate and I'm struggling to troubleshoot the issue.
There are two Exchange servers in this deployment with a WAN connection between the two locations. I have also setup a DAG with a copy of the database at both locations.
The Mail flow is good users are using the system.
This issue only applies to one of the Exchange servers where the transaction logs are being created at about 1 every 5 seconds. There are only about 12 Mailboxes in each location so I see no reason for so many transactions taking place.
I have tried to locate whats causing the issue and have tried to use ExMon but this doesnt appear to work with Exchange 2013. The only bit of useful information I have found was to use this:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/01/31/a-script-to-troubleshoot-issues-with-exchange-activesync.aspx
where it did show there was one particular Android device that had a very high Hit count. I have asked the user to disable the device's email for the time being while I investigate further but the transaction logs are still growing.
From the same results I also see the Healthmailbox's have high hit numbers.
The script also has a line with some 55000 hits but its user is blank. What is this likely to be?
Is there a tool I can use to help me identify whats causing these logs to grow so fast?
I have installed some backup software to run every night that helps reduce the logs and also enable circular logging which I understand will help prevent running out of space on the drive.
    Would really appreciate some guidance.
    Thanks
    Bill

Do you have  any third party software AV installed on Exchange mailbox servers. If so can you disable them for a while or set exclusions for Exchange files on them.
Check the queue and see if there are any emails stuck in the queue
Just run below command to check if there are any large emails with attachment stuck in any of the users mailbox which might cause the issue
    get-mailbox -ResultSize Unlimited| Get-MailboxFolderStatistics -folderscope Outbox | Sort-Object Foldersize -Descending | select-object identity,name,foldertype,itemsinfolder,@{Name="FolderSize MB";expression={$_.folderSize.toMB()}} | export-csv OutboxItems.csv
In your case most likely  any third party AV might be causing this. Just disable third party AV if any and check.

  • Transactional log grows abnormally to 160GB

    Dear All
I am new to SQL database . Im my production server transactional log grow upto 160GB and only 7 GB left in the file system
Like dont want to add the any space in the file system and we have everyday full backup schedule.
Is there any permanent solution. I want to take the proactive action before my database hang.
Is also check the note 421644.

    Hi Tarik!
Probably the fact that your TLOG is so high is because you did not back it up at all in the beginning or you just did not back it up for some time. This does not mean that its allocated space is full, and in fact, if you defined a proper backup policy you can shrink it to a more reasonable value as explained in SAP note 363018 (section E.b ).
Now, in order to avoid having it grown so much again is to ensure that you perform TLOG backups regularly (the frequency depends on your business needs, you should take your own conclusions depending on your system activity); check the autogrow settings just in case a single grow means a huge increase (imagine you set 120 GB!).
In case that you have any problems still e.g. because the TLOG grows even though you back it up regularly, you can check if there is a open transaction that prevents it to be backed up, as you already know note 421644.
    Good luck!
