Translation and NLS in APEX

Following this post, by Joel - Re: Validating manually entered dates – I decided to open a new thread, to clarify this important issue a bit more.
"… I think the real problem is to solve the translation software defect."A generic solution is always the best one.
" There are translation strings used by the APEX engine which are not accessible to the end developer"I believe this is the heart of the problem. The reference you gave, about the report engine translatable string is great (http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31036_01/doc/appdev.22/b28550/global.htm#CHDJFHBD). I've tested it, and my pagination reports never looked better (not to mention all the time and energy I put to the JavaScript code, to bring it as close as possible to the current look). You need to allow access to ALL these kind of string/messages. This will be a giant step towards solving the translation software defects.
While on the subject, is there a dictionary view for these strings, or some SQL query that allow us to reveal the proper message names available already in the system?

Seriously, if the report engine strings are any indication, this mechanism is working just grate. It can be a very productive addition to the next version.

Bursting with translation and security attributes?

Hi folks,
I've been lurking on the forum for a while and despite not always finding a solution, existing threads normally pointed me in the right direction - so thanks :)
I'm working on EBS 11.5.10 with the latest Bi-Publisher 5.6.3 (5472959) and bursting (5968876) patches installed.
I have successfully done the following individual AR Invoice Bi-Publisher tasks:
1. translated an invoice RTF template by attaching an xliff file to the data definition,
2. applied security attributes to the template to restrict updates on the resulting PDF,
3. burst a custom AR invoice print and emailed the resultant pdf's.
The PDF generated by the combined Invoice print correctly applies the translation and security attributes; however when I run the "XML Publisher Report Bursting Program" to the XML file the resultant burst PDF's do not apply the translation or security attributes. I assume this a limitation of bursting control files? If so, is this on the list of future enhancements to Bi-Publisher?
Here's an example of my control file document entry, I have included locale and pdf-security entries - these don't cause an error but equally don't generate the desired result (p.s. I know I'm emailing on a PRI filter - it's just a test):

You would have happened to try applying the security stuff in the application for your template? Try that and see if the pdf properties get set.
If that doesn't work your left with two options:
1. create a java concurrent program and set the properties manually.
2. Log a tar.

Are you sure you don't have to create template config for the locale? i suspect that's why it's not applying the xliff translation. Also, your NLS_LANG needs to be set to FRENCH for the approriate template to be applied. If your logged-in as english your french format template will not be applied, neither will the translation. As an example you can query vl table and you'll only get american (us) but if you alter your session you'll get the translation for that language when your query the table.

try it out and see if that works. Note: This will only work if your session NLS_LANG is set to FRENCH.

11i General Ledger : Translation and Revaluation issue.

I'll post the problem as descriptively as i can.
* The client has an Equity account under the natural code of 7341. He has not defined the GL : Owner's Equity Translation rule.
* The currency rate table shows that the rate type used for this natural code is Period
* Functional currency is USD
In August 2006, the client had made an entry to this account to the value of AUD 24,713 which was converted at journal entry point to USD 18,977. The entry was subsequently reversed in September 2008 and the USD book shows a '0' balance after it, which is correct. Just before the reversal the balance was USD 21,332 (taking into account subsequent revaluations till Aug 2008)
Client performs monthly translations and revaluations. In August 2006, the entry was translated to LKR books with a value of LKR 1,929,634. After which monthly revaluations which happened in the functional currency books also got translated and hit the LKR books till September 2008.
The total USD reversal in USD books as stated earlier was USD 21,332. This comprised of an initial entry and subsequent revaluations that were translated LKR books at different historical rates. But the reversal was translated to LKR books only on the closing rate as at September 2008. Leaving a small LKR balance of just over 100k.
Is there anyway that the client can perform the translation in such a way that after the reversal the closing value of the LKR books is also '0'. Please note that he is not willing to change the classification of the account from Owner's Equity.

Instead of reversing the Original Journal, Pass a reversal entry nullifying the effect of the Original Entry.

Wait XML File Generation and Present in APEX

Hi All,
I need advice on how can I implement following -
I will be creating Input XML file using database procedure called from APEX, which will then go and executed the call using web services and create output XML file in one of the output directory. What I need help is -
1. Once execute the initial call, then I need to be keep looking for file under output directory. Once the file is generated then I can show it on APEX, but I would like to know how can I implement, so continuously watch the directory for the file and as soon as file generated pick that file and present on APEX and stop watching directory for file.
2. Also APEX will be used by many users concurrently, so how can I create and direct unique file for their own sessions, so myfile should not go to another user?

There are lots of thread on ingesting XML and generating XML in this forum. Have a read through some of them and you should get some ideas on where to start. In particular look for threads on rcreating elational views of XML documents and using the SQL/XML Operators

Export from Apex 3.2 and import to Apex 4.0

I apologize if this has been asked before (and I am sure it has).
We are about to move all our Apex/Oracle apps to a server where Apex 4.0 is installed. Our current Apex version is 3.2. My question is can we export from Apex 3.2 and import in Apex 4.0 and expect everything to work (assuming it all works fine in Apex 3.2 and all Oracle objects were moved properly to the new server , both servers have Oracle 11g).

I am having trouble finding "update application" under any of the utilities.
Also one of my applications gives me the following error when I try to import it from Apex 3.2. to 4.0

Edit templates and change the look and feel of apex UI

Hi Friends,
I am trying to change the look and feel of apex pages(change the alignment,color etc) and try to edit the template
of apex pages. Please give me links or tutorials that helps to accomplish this,

Hello Tj,
You can spend some time on how to create your own Template, but it comes down to design your site in html and then break it into pieces and change the Templates in APEX with that html.
In that html you use tags e.g. #BOX_BODY# to tell APEX where the forms and reports need to come.

I think the best method is to just try it. Sure we give a course on that too, so it's up to you if you need training on that or the doc/your tries are sufficient or not.
Once you know how things work you can do pretty much everything.

Usage of CGI environment variables SERVER_NAME and HTTP_HOST by APEX

Hi,
I have a question about the usage of the CGI environment variables SERVER_NAME/SERVER_PORT and HTTP_HOST by APEX.
When does it use which CGI environment variables when it is generating absolute URLs.
Based on the following thread about the online help (Re: Help does not show content it seems to use SERVER_NAME/SERVER_PORT. At least for the online help.
But based on my own tests some time ago about the flash charting at the following thread (Re: APEX Charts - Error XML Loading falied I investigated that at least flash charting is using HTTP_HOST to generate an absolute URL.
My question now is what is the logical difference between HTTP_HOST and SERVER_NAME and which of the URLs should be used when I want to generate absolute URLs in my application?
I would tend to use HTTP_HOST because it seems to be more logically. I would see SERVER_NAME more as just the name of the web-server, which doesn't have to be the URL the user enters in case a reverse proxy is used.

We use HTTP_HOST in most cases from what I can see. You may have also noted that HTTP_HOST may have :<port> appended to the hostname as well.

TO_NUMBER and NLS parameters......don't understand

I am trying to get my head around the use of format elements and NLS parameters with TO_NUMBER and TBH am at my wits end. So I'm going to start with something simple. I've never bothered or had to bother with the third parameter 'nls params' for NLS settings and now that I have I really regret it.
This works even though the '.' and ',' characters are not in their normal positions....
SQL> SELECT TO_NUMBER( '17.000,23', '999G999D99', 'nls_numeric_characters='',.'' ') FROM DUAL;
TO_NUMBER('17.000,23','999G999D99','NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS='',.''')
17000.2
So why is this version throwing up an error? (I should say all I've changed is the order of ',' and '.' in the string)

I apologise but when marking code in my spl*plus CLI and trying to paste here as 'SQL insert' lines ended up missing or wrapping or line spacing changing seconds later. I ended up with one line written over the other and the missing lines only being visible when highlighted!!!

Of course the order is important. How would you tell the meaning of each character if it wasn't?
First character is the decimal separator, and the second is the thousand separator.
Your first query is OK because the decimal separator used in the input string is '.' and the thousand separator is ',', which matches exactly the characters specified in the NLS parameter.
The second query failed for the opposite reason.

10.5.7 Translator and mds processes running at 100%

Hi,
Since 10.5.7 installation I've had a couple processes that decide to operate at high CPU load with no apparent cause. With no applications running I've had Translator and or mds operate at 100% CPU load, making most other operations impossible.
I am aware that mds is linked to Spotlight and placing my system disk into the Spotlight privacy list seems to temporarily solve the mds problem. However, the Translator issue is different. Once it starts drawing high CPU load it will not stop. I've tried to quit the process and it leads to a OS freeze. With or without trying to quit it, it leads to having to do a hard reset as soft resetting or shut down is also frozen.
I first installed 10.5.7 from software update. After seeing issues I tried other's suggestions to use the combo update. This seemed to work momentarily, until the same issues started popping up again. Anyone have similar issues? I don't think I'm the only one ... I hope!

Translator is linked to the Address Book and sync services with MobileMe... I've had it crashing since 10.5.5 Doesn't seem to actually do anything as all my data is synced correctly. Go figure! Here're a couple of lines from this morning's system log.

Right click with mouse in Word 2013 does not give the list with translate and synonyms etc

since i upgraded to windows 8.1 right click on words in word 2013 does not open the regular list where you can tap on synonyms and translate.
it does work if i touch the screen.
i moved to mouse mode but it does not help
can anyone help...

I have tested in my computer and it worked well.
Normally when we type a wrong spelling, right clicking the word does not give a list with translate and synonyms.
Check to make sure your spelling is right.
if the issue persists, Start Word in safe mode to check the issue:Hold "Ctrl" key and click into the program.
It is also recommended that you do a repair for your Office suites in
Control panel>Program and features>Office>Change>Repair

Google translation and navigation issue

I recently created a website for a lawyer. Instead of creating 2 sites (1 in english and 1 in German) we went the cheaper route and just used Google translation to keep it simple understanding it isn't a perfect translation. However, when it translates the there is a few tabs in the navigation that get screwed up. I suspect it is something in my design that I am missing. Can anyone tell why this would be happening?

To simplify things, you may wish to combine styles into one styles.css file.
Example, you have this embedded style in your HTML document between comment tags:

Why don't you consolidate the green code into your style.css like so?

And change the @import URL to a stylesheet link like this:

First of all, uninstall it with the uninstaller.
Then:
Install the ENGLISH version.
Change the language in the CC app to Korean.
Install the Korean version. (DON't uninstall the English version)
Change back the langauge in the CC app to English.
When your OS is running in English, InDesign will run in English with Korean functionality added, if your OS is running in Korean it will take the Korean User Interface, so let your OS run in English.
Every installer language will add needed plugins for the work with that language. E.g. If I install Hebrew, I get RTL functionality in German version, only if I would change the OS language it would change the language of InDesign, InDesign takes always as UI language the language of the OS if available, if not (in your case you have uninstalled English before), it takes any version which is available in the order of languages specified in the OS.
If you need to run your program in a different language than the OS but you have installed it in the language of the OS it becomes more difficult. You would have to use some system tools which are able to force a program to open with a different language. Most of those tools are freeware.
