Tricky problem. Opening RAW with Javascript. White balance problem.

Hi all. Hopefully someone can help with this - its a tricky one.
I've been using a javascript to send RAW and DNG files to Photoshop CS5 for automatic processing. The script opens the files directly into PS, apparently bypassing Adobe Camera Raw. It always renders the photos with the ACR default settings which can be set in either ACR on Lightroom. The standard Adobe settings are WB (As Shot), Brightness (+50), Contrast (+25).
My problem is that it ignores any changes I have made to the RAW files in ACR. So if I want to use a custom white balance, its not possible to use the javascript. The script ignores the 'custom' white balance and resets it to 'As Shot'.
I've tried changing the default values in ACR but the options are As Shot, or a set Kelvin preset such as Tungsten, Sunlight etc. Nothing helps.
Is it possible for the script to be mindful of the custom adjustments - especially subtle changes to WB - that I have made in ACR?
The script is below...
var stacks = app.document.stacks;
var stackCount = stacks.length;
for(var s = 0;s<stackCount;s++){
      var stackFiles = getStackFiles( stacks[s] );
      if(stackFiles.length> 1){
           var bt = new BridgeTalk;
           bt.target = "photoshop";
           var myScript = ("var ftn = " + psRemote.toSource() + "; ftn("+stackFiles.toSource()+");");
           bt.body = myScript;
           bt.onResult = function( inBT ) {myReturnValue(inBT.body); }
           bt.send(500);
function getStackFiles( stack ){
      var files = new Array();
      for( var f = 0; f<stack.thumbnails.length;f++){
           files.push(stack.thumbnails[f].spec);
      return files;
function myReturnValue(str){
      res = str;
function psRemote(stackFiles){
      var loadLayersFromScript = true;
      var strPresets = localize ("$$$/ApplicationPresetsFolder/Presets=Presets");
      var strScripts = localize ("$$$/PSBI/Automate/ImageProcessor/Photoshop/Scripts=Scripts");
      var strFile2Stack = "Load Files into Stack.jsx";
      var ipFilePath = app.path + "/" + strPresets + "/" + strScripts + "/" + strFile2Stack;
      var ipFile = new File (ipFilePath);
      $.evalFile( ipFile );
      loadLayers.intoStack(stackFiles);
      app.doAction ('My Action');
      var saveFile = new File('~/desktop/'+(new Date().getTime().toString())+'.psd');
      app.activeDocument.saveAs(saveFile);
      app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);

Paul,
this script do perfectly what i need... But unfortunately not in Bridge CS6 :-(
I use Windows7 64 and CS6. When I run the script from the Extended Script Toolkit, everything works great.
Then I saved the script in the Bridge folder "startup scripts". At the start of Bridge I get the following error message:
"Error in C: \ Users \ ... \ AppData \ Roaming \ Adobe \ Bridge CS6 \ Startup
Scripts \ Stack Batch.jsx
Line 1: var = app.document.stacks stacks;
undefined is not an object "
Bridge and then starts the script is not enabled.
Thanks for any help

  • Can't open raw with lumix gx1 elements 9

    Hi Group,
    Windows 7, Elements 9   Panasonic lumix gx1
    I tried acr 6.5 but it won't open the lumix raw files.  One site I found said that this camera needs 6.6 but that update failed.  I don't won't to update to elements 10 as I see no reason to do this.  Does anyone know what or if it's possible to get these files to open in Elements 9?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    I finally downloaded the coverter.  I refuse to buy Elements 10 when there is nothing new that I need.  Maybe 11 when I see what it does but I doubt it.  The coverter works just fine. Michael

    Actually, the problem is that Adobe seems to be wanting to force their users into purchasing otherwise unnecessary upgrades.  I, too, use Elements 9, and it does everything I need...except read the RAW files from my new GX-1. Yes, I can download the DNG converter (and I have), but that adds an extra, and unnecessary, step to processing.  Adobe's reputation for not respecting their customers isn't unwarranted.

  • Having problem opening files with gradients in CS2

    When I try to open an illustrator 9 file from CS2, I get "An unknown error has occurred." message. I believe this may be a CS2 problem because when I checked further, I discovered that only AI 9 files where the gradient feature was used were affected. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi Sjmitc, I followed Barbara's instructions about only about 24 hours ago and since then my files have been opening perfectly.  I tried it again before replying to you and they are still opening fine.
    I did have to go through my files a couple of times to find all the Elements preferences, but the solution is working fine so far.  I will let you know if I have any further problems.  It is maddening when it happens, so I hope you can fix yours.

    Henwen, Is this solution still working for you? I tried this same solution on mine a few days ago and had no luck. However, it actually let me open files this afternoon then when I went back in later today, it was doing the disappearing act again.

  • Problem opening files with Mac OS Mavericks and Elements

    I have recently installed Mac OS 10.9.x Mavericks.  Since this I have had problems opening files in Elements 11.  I upgraded to Elements 12, blindly hoping the problem would fix itself, however it hasn't.   When I try to open a file the Finder window pops up then disappears immediately.  Occasionally it will stay open until I scroll down but then closes.   I keep the files on an external drive but the drive is working with all other applications, so I don't think it is that.  If anyone has had a similar problem and has any ideas I would be grateful as the program is unusable for now.  Thanks very much in anticipation

  • ACR 3.7 White Balance Problem

    I have just installed Photoshop Lightbox 1.0 on my Windows (XP SP2) PC. After importing a few hundred adjusted DNG files into this software, I noticed that many of the images had severe (thankfully easily spotted) pinkish colour casts indicating a serious white point shift. Viewing the same images in Bridge using ACR 3.X (3.2?) revealed no problems. Now I am a bit confused here. Lightbox claims to use ACR 3.7, which is supposed to be a shared resource with Photoshop. However my version of Photoshop CS2 indicated it was using an earlier version. Anyway, I then upgraded my ACR plugin to v3.7 and low and behold the same problem appeared in Bridge / ACR 3.7.
    The problem does not affect all images. It seems, though I am not sure, that it is only those images where the white balance had been set to a custom value that are affected. Other settings: exposure, contrast etc, seem to be unaffected. It is possible to fix the problem in the Bridge + Photoshop + ACR 3.7 environment using the previously saved "fixed" images as references. However the problem remains in Lightroom, presumably because the RAW adjustments are stored separately, and is not so easily fixed, as it does not seem to be possible to have two different images side by side while carrying out fine white-point adjustments.
    Anyway, to cut to the chase, I am quite furious that this could have happened at all, as it raises serious questions about the backward compatibility of the software and/or the ability of RAW (DNG) files to preserve adjustment information securely against changes in the software environment. What has occurred should be impossible, but evidently is not. Maybe these digital negatives are not so safe after all.
    Anybody got any idea what went wrong and how to fix it? Is there a way to reset Lightroom to the externally applied RAW adjustments?

    Actually the product I am talking about is ACR 3.7, which is common to Photoshop CS2, Bridge and Lightroom. The Read Me! notes accompanying my installation of Lightroom clearly states that it uses ACR 3.7 (and that upgrading ACR 3.7 in Photoshop would be necessary to ensure consistency, which I have done). The reference to Lightroom was important, as unlike the Photoshop ACR, in my setup, Lightroom does not store the adjustment settings in sidecar XMP files, or, in the case of DNG files, within the files themselves. The problem manifested itself inside Lightroom first, and then, only after I upgraded Photoshop to ACR 3.7, did the problem occur within Bridge and Photoshop. This clearly demonstrates that the problem is ACR 3.7, and not some feature of Lightroom. [It might help therefore, if, in future, you forgot I mentioned Lightroom.]
    To answer your next question, the DNG files were created in my camera (Pentax K10D firmware v1.0 & v1.1). ACR defaults are as out of the box except that sharpening is set to be applied in preview only. Data are "written to XMP" rather than a database.
    The auto settings may have changed. However, the fault, when it occurs, is a major, and very obvious, shift of white point, not the sort of thing one would expect from a tweaking of the default/auto settings. Anyway it is only adjusted whitepoint settings, not auto ones, that have changed.
    I cannot be sure that the problem is specific to DNG, though I suspect it probably is. My older PEF (Pentax RAW) files are unaffected.
    I do not think it is acceptable that changes to software should cause changes to the rendering of an image, particularly where that rendering may have been created by careful adjustment. This is a fundamental issue of backward compatibility.

  • Problem opening Raw Files In PS Elements 10

    Hi I just installed PS Elements 10 on a new laptop, I can not open my Raw files, no problem with the jpegs but can not open Raw, I use this software on my old laptop and desk top with no problem, Windows 7 is on all 3 computers, What do I need to do to fix this and be able to open the Raw. Also note I notice that I have a blue check mark on my jpeg files and I have a Red X on my Raw files which I never had on my other two computers.

    You might try downloading the 6.7 update from here and installing that:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5383
    If that fails, what does the error message say?
    (there should be some numbers in the failed message that represent an error code)

  • Photo Merge using RAW files - does white balance matter?

    I'm using a Canon 5dII and create RAW files to be merged - both stitched and for HDR.  In other words, if I bracket 3 (0, +2, -2)  I'll do the bracket 3 times, once for the left, middle and right parts of the scene and will have 9 RAW images.  I'm asking the question because as I pan I may be moving from sun to shade.  If I use auto white balance, I'm concerned that the 3 stitched sections may have a different WB set (e.g. sun and shade).  If PS5 doesn't use the WB tag, then it is immaterial.  If it does use the WB tag would it use the same setting for all 3 parts of the stitched scene.  I could of course manually set the WB for each series of 9, but would prefer not to if it is not necessary and continue to use AWB as I now do.
    THANKS!  I know my question is not specific to Macintosh - If this should be directed to another forum please let me know.

    If I am visuallizing what you are asking correctly, yes it does matter. In my
    exspirence the way I have had the most success doing what you are doing is
    to merge all your image that are -2 stop into a pano. Save
    as a high-res TIFF 16-bit or higher. Repeat the process
    for the following 2 stop and then merge your TIFFs to
    and HDR. Something I always to before
    Photomerging is  to use Camera Raw get the setting of exposure and what not exactl
    y how you what them copy those setting and paste to all the following images that are included in
    that photomerge, that helps to take care or variation
    s that can happen with exposure doing panos, it more often then not has a
    real nice outcome.

  • Photoshop Elements 6 won't open RAW with XMP file.

    Hi,
    I searched for an answer but, could not find an answer.
    I edited a RAW file with Photoshop Elements 6 (mac). I saved the file and closed the program. Next day I fire up PSE6 and open the same RAW file; the file is unedited. How can I open the RAW file with the edits I made the day before? I see the xmp file in finder.
    I'm still on the trial version. Camera is a Canon 50D. I can open and edit the RAW with out problem. When I start PSE6 Adobe update fails and gives me the options: Ignore,Relaunch,Send report to Apple.
    After that PSE opens for me
    Help me Obi Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.
    Thanks.

    Are you hitting the save button? That is creating a DNG file someplace. If you just want to save your edits, that should happen automatically when you click Open or Done. If it doesn't, try going to your username>preferences folder and deleting the Adobe Camera Raw preferences.

  • Images look different with same white balance

    Hey folks,
    Just ran some tests between a Nikon D300 and a Nikon D7000. I pulled both images into Lightroom 3.4 (PC), and matched the white balance using the White Balance Selector tool and a WhiBal card in a test image. And even though they now have the same white balance, the colors are distinctly different. How is this possible? (The same image shot with a D200 looks nearly identical to the D300.) Examples:
    D7000
    D300
    All other specs the same:
    Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 @50mm
    1/80 @ f/5.6, ISO 200
    RAW
    Color space: AdobeRGB
    Picture Control setting: SD (standard)
    Custom white balance from WhiBal card, matched in Lightroom 3.4: 5200, +38
    I need to be able to shoot with multiple bodies and sync them so I don't have to adjust the batches separately.
    Thanks in advance

    WB is not the only factor involved in how colour is created in a digital image. The WB just sets the colour temperature. How the colour is created is effected by many other factors, hence calibration profiles. By calibrating the sensor you can produce a standardised response for a particular individual sensor. You could then carefully match this with a different sensor. However there will always be subtle differences. It would be far easier when requiring a particular shoot to have exactly the same look, to use one camera and one lens to achieve it.
    When making a film,  directors, such as Hitchcock, would insist on not only using the same film stock, from the same batch, but in the case of Vertigo even had the same water source used for all processing to achieve the look he was after.

    How can i open the xml file in a new tab with javascript??

    As a short term workaround, you could package it with Firefox on the USB flash drive to work around the tendency of the installed Firefox to look to its own profile folder.

  • Problem opening photos with camera raw 7.1 with Photoshop CS6

    I am using Windows 7 32 bit system with 4GB ram and graphics accelerator.
    I have Photoshop CS5.1 installed in the same system at it works perfectly.
    What happens is when I use the B+W function, I get an error message saying that I have not enough ram.
    After that, when I open the next photo with Camera Raw, the raw image will not open.
    I have already maximised the Ram that Photoshop can use to 1.7GB and there is more than enough space in my scratch disk.
    Anyone can tell me what the problem is?

    Hi Noel,
    Thanks for your reply.
    Just to clarify.
    I applied B+W layer adjustment on my photos.  It is part of an automated set of actions which I apply to all my photos.  I adjust the B&W layer to 50% overlay.  When I click on the B&W adjustment layer, there is an error message that tells me I have not enough ram. Once that happens, when I open the next photo in raw, I don't see the new photo but only the frame of the camera raw though which I see my photoshop desktop.
    It doesn't occur with the first few photos.  But by the 3rd or 4th it happens.
    I will adjust it to 50% and see what happens.

  • White Balance problem with an ACER X203w Lcd - Late 2004 G5, 10.4.11 OS

    I'm not sure if my video card is going or I have flipped into an alternate viewing mode by mistake. Been running an ACER X203w Lcd display with my G5 OS 10.4.11 for a few months, last night the screen went wonky and now displays everything as if it were a negative (like film negative).
    I have run the Coloursync
    Searching for profiles...
    Checking 927 profiles...
    Verify done - no problems found.
    I have run the Disk Utility, no problems found.
    I have deleted the acer profile on my system and downloaded a replacement version from Acer... still have the problem.
    Any clues people?

    I tell ya, I had no clue what I did that day running my fingers over the keyboard because my system froze. That cured my problem. Thank you so much!!!

  • Newbie with problems opening RAW files.

    I am new to using RAW files.  I started by following the instructions to download and install the new RAW plug-in for my CS2 version of photoshop.  When I open CS2 and choose bridge, I can see the thumbnail of the NEF file, but when I right click to open, there is no option for me to open as RAW file.  If I double left click to open it tells me it cannot open because it is the wrong type of file.
    Photoshop CS2 Ver 9.0
    Raw Plug-in Ver 3.7
    Camera Nikon D5000

    Unfortunately, ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) 3.7 doesn't support RAW files from Nikon D5000.
    Support for Nikon D5000 RAW was added in ACR 5.4. But, again, sorry to say you cannot install ACR5.4 for Photoshop CS2.
    Your best bet is to try a DNG converter that you can find in your Nikon Camera Applications CD and convert your pictures.

  • Problem opening RAW files in Elements 11

    I have installed Photoshop Elements 11. When I try to open .NEF raw files they do not show in the File-Open dialog box. NEF is not shown as a option in the filetype drop down in File-Open.
    I am running Windows XP SP3.
    Is there something wrong with the installation or does it need a plugin?

    OK, Adobe spent most of the day trying to fix this problem, and didn't. PSE11 was reinstalled and patches which weren't relevent were installed and failed. Although my PC meets all the spec for Photoshop Elements 11, it just will not show Camera Raw under Help....plug-ins, or show NEF files in File....Open, or the Camera Raw file extensions in the File ...Open...File Types. The guy gave up but didn't tell me that he would escalate although I tried to suggest it.
    So, no Camera Raw for me I'm afraid nless I use my ancient slow laptop.
    Does anyone have an email address for escalations n Adobe ?
