Trouble Printing Pages Document

I have created a two page, Pages document, I used one of the templates for a news letter. It has text and 15 pictures imported from my photos in iphoto.
When I print lower quality draft versions it works fine. But when i want a high quality print, the printer stops near the bottom of the first printed page and just stalls. Whats going on?
Here is what I have
Slot loading iMac, 400 MHz Power PC G3, 512 ram memory (1slot)
128 GB internal hard drive, Mac OS X 10.4.8
Pages version 1.0.2 ( 2 page document w/ 15 pctures & text, size 8.3 MB)
Printer Canon Pixma iP 1500 ( Installed latest driver from Canon last night)
Most of the pictures are pretty small, 1-1/2" x 2", would it be better to reduce the image MB size by using iPhoto to export it as a smaller size version, and replace the images in my document to make the overall document size smaller?

I've had the same problem.
Try this for printing:
- in print dialogue go to Paper Handling and set to 'scale document to paper size A4' (or whatever size you are using)
And try this for e-mailing:
- open print dialogue window, in the bottom left corner click on PDF and 'Save as Postscript'
- you get a huge PS file. Open it with Acrobat (or Preview) and you will get a compact PDF file which is good for e-mailing or printing.
If you have a full version of Acrobat there is also and option 'Reduce file size'.
I struggled a lot while trying to find a way to create mailable files from Pages. The three step solution (Pages-PostScript-PDF) seems to work best.
I've published several articles on this at

Hope this helps,

DO NOT USE PREVIEW TO FILL OUT PDF FORMS, IT WILL DESTROY PDF FILES. Sorry, but I had to shout here to prevent damage to your PDF files.
Here is one of the symptoms when you fill out a PDF form with Preview: If you save it and return it to the author, they will not be able to see the text that you've added to form fields - unless they click on a field, which will reveal the contents of just that field. You can recover from this problem, but Preview will also remove other field types, and will actually rewrite your complete PDF while ignoring what it does not understand. Take a look at this blog post for more information about the damage that Preview will cause: Preview.app - Killer of PDF Files

  • Trouble emailing pages document

I'm using pages/08 and I'm having trouble emailing documents as attachments. They're small files - like one page of text only, and I've had trouble with this in the past. I generally end up not using pages and going back to appleworks and emailing as a pdf that way. Does anyone know anything about why it's so problematic to email from iwork?
    Thank you.
    Bob

A Pages document is actually a package, a special kind of folder that appears as a single file, but isn't. You can't e-mail a folder which is why many mail clients balk. Apple Mail will automatically zip a folder, other e-mail clients don't, especially web-based e-mail. In the Finder, Control- or right-click on the Pages document & choose Create Archive… (Tiger) or Compress… (Leopard) from the contextual menu. You will now have a zipped Pages document that you can attach to your e-mail & send.

  • Printing Pages Document

I want to print a 40 page Pages document. I go to print, select 'all', but when the printer (HP 6100 Series) starts up, it just spits out one page after another, very quickly, w/nothing on them.
    Any Clues

Do other applications do this? If you print to PDF using the Print dialog, is the resulting PDF file blank? If not, when you print this file, do the pages come out correctly?

  • Trouble opening Pages documents

Help! I can't open any of my Pages documents. I get this message: The required index.xml file is missing. I don't use the Cloud. Anyone know what's causing this? I'm not using an I-Pad or anything. I just started having this problem on my Mavericks computer this evening. I understand how to move Pages '08 documents to '09 and then to the current version. This is actually not happening with those documents alone. It's happening even with new documents I create in the current version of Pages. I've wasted hours and hours on two documents I now cannot open!

Thanks for the help and feedback, folks! VikingOSX, your answer was completely over my head, but I tried replacing (pages) with (.docx) and in the process realized what my problem was. I had created a new pages document in Pages 5.2.2 and saved it. Then when I tried to open it later, I had the Pages '09 application already open, and that application couldn't read it. I closed Pages '08, '09, and the newest version, then changed the ending back to (.pages) and double clicked on the document. It automatically opened using 5.2.2.
So, short story is, if I create something in my newest version, I have to make sure all old versions of the application are closed, otherwise they'll try to open my document and give me the message that it needs an xml file.
VikingOSX, thanks for making me walk through a process that eventually led to the answer, even if it wasn't exactly the answer you provided! MUCH APPRECIATED. YOU SAVED ME HOURS OF WORK.

  • Trouble printing converted document - no "Shink Oversized Pages" option in Word

    Hi gurus
I have a document which was originally created in Word, apparently to print as A2.  I now have it in PDF format only.  It prints fine in A4 size due to the selection Shink Oversized Pages defaulting on in Adobe Reader.
Of course, I need to edit the document, so I converted it to Word.  I now have problems printing, as there is apparently no such equivalent option and I have to either resize everything (not feasible - it would be quicker to create the document from scratch) or save back to PDF then print from PDF rather than Word.
There must be an easier way?  Can't the PDF conversion/export software be set to A4?
    Thanks
    Lynton

If the conversion software exported as A4, Word would reflow the layout in the same way it would when you do Page Setup in Word - the layout would be utterly destroyed. What ExportPDF won't do is shrink as it exports to A4. (Perhaps a useful option, but certainly not what everyone would want or need).
You could always reconvert your Word back to PDF for printing.

  • I have an iPad 3 and when trying to print Pages documents from EpsoniPrint there is a border, how can I get it to print normal without sending it to my Mac?

I have both quickoffice and pages on my iPad, and when I try to print from either of those through EpsoniPrint they don't print "normal".  And pages prints with a border around it.  How can I adjust that or is there a better app for printing via wireless?  I have an epson 510, so it's wireless capable but not AirPrint.

If you have a Mac I would recommend that your install Printopia. Here is a link to it:
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia/
With Printopia, any printer that you can connect to your Mac will appear on your iPad as long as they are on the same wi-fi network. Try Printopia to see if that border goes away. Good luck!

  • Trouble printing HTML document

On http://technet.oracle.com/oramag/webcolumns/2003/techarticles/clevenger_jumpstart2.html, there is no 'print' button or print friendly version of this Article. Trying to print this fine Article by Robert Clevenger results in the right margin (and words) being chopped off. If there was a frame that could be printed or if a user could hit an available 'print' button to eliminate the clutter on the left and top-hand sides, that would be a big help.

  • I'm having trouble printing pages from Adobe Digital Editions

So earlier, I made the authorization to print the whole ebook.
Upon my making this authorization, my computer was slow.
I cancelled the command, figuring that Adobe Digital Editions would let me try again.
Now it says I can only print 4 pages.
    This program is really dumb.
How do I gain more pages available to print for the same ebook?

interesting, check your settings first and make sure cables are connected properly (I know it sound obvious!) then try an app like hp eprint or print n share

  • My MG5220 won't print an original 3 page document from rear tray.

I have only recently had trouble printing original documents from rear tray.  I have completed maintenance ( cleaning), checked paper media, etc.  I have checked page set-up, etc.  I think I am overlooking something that is obvious but I can't see the forest for the trees.  Please advise.  Thanks!

    Hi Kashmie,
To try and resolve the issue, with a flashlight or other bright light, please check the paper feed area of the printer and verify that there are no paper jams or obstructions in the printer that may be causing the paper not to feed.  Once this has been done, please look inside of the printer where the inks are located and ensure that there are no obstructions in there that may be causing the print head not to move freely.  Next, please remove and reseat all of the ink tanks in the printer.  Once all of these steps have been performed, if you still experience difficulty, please call or email us at one of the methods on the Contact Us page for further assistance.

  • Is it possible to save my pages documents as editable PDF's?

I start a new semester (college) in two weeks. I was wondering this partly because one of my professors (from last semester) had a lot of trouble sending pages documents to people who have PC's.
How do I save a pages document as a PDF and not as a ".doc"?
    Thanks!

one of my professors (from last semester) had a lot of trouble sending pages documents to people who have PC's. How do I save a pages document as a PDF and not as a ".doc"?
Microsoft Word was introduced for Macintosh in 1984. The file format of Microsoft Word is application-dependent, that is, both the author and the audience must acquire the selfsame application in order to see shared files. This is true also of Aldus PageMaker (introduced 1985), QuarkXPress (introduced 1987) and any of a very, very long list of file formats specific to one and only one application.
It became clear to all concerned in 1989-1990 that problems would be produced by interchange of digital documents, if there were no conversion from application-dependent archival file formats into application-independent archival file formats. It also became clear to all concerned that there would be two kinds of application-independent archival file formats.
When laser imaging was introduced, developers of laser imaging systems for photographic preparation of the printing surface introduced preparatory-phase page markup languages which are content-oriented and production-phase page description languages which are appearance-oriented. Initially, both were tied to the make and model of laser imaging system.
Page markup languages for a make and model of laser imaging system (essentially the command syntax for the laser imagesetter) meant that if you coded/tagged for one make and model of laser imagesetter, you could not repurpose what you had coded/tagged for another make and model of laser imagesetter. Clearly, this was uneconomical.
This realisation led to SGML Standard Generalised Markup Language under the governance of the International Standards Organisation. SGML is not perfect, among other things it can let you have what are essentially private characters and if porous memory serves it can let you have several coded character sets simultaneously which is undesirable in a content-oriented format.
The same sort of problem was posed by page description languages the first of which was the command syntax for the raster image processor that ran the Monotype Lasercomp introduced in 1976. Page description languages introduce an x-y coordinate design space that is mapped onto an x-y coordinate user space which is the address space of the raster image processor.
Page descriptions that depended on the command syntax for a make and model of laser imagesetter posed problems for portability and page description languages under corporate governance clustered around the companies in the United States that targetted the market for graphic information processing commonly called desktop publishing.
Hewlett-Packard Printer Command Language was introduced into this market in May 1984 when the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet made it to market, driving a wedge between the IBM Personal Computer and the IBM line of non-impact printers. Xerox Interpress made it from the laboratory into the market with the initial documentation of the model in 1985.
Adobe PostScript and Xerox Interpress are along almost all dimensions the same model, developed by some of the same people. Adobe PostScript made it to market through a contract entered into in late 1984 between CEO Steven Jobs of Apple Computer, CEO Dr Wolfgang K u m m e r of Linotype, and CEO Dr John Warnock of Adobe Systems.
Adobe PostScript and Xerox Interpress both support multiple coded character sets simultaneously, although Xerox Interpress favours XCCS Xerox Coded Character Set which is the conceptual precursor of Unicode. Xerox Interpress in addition has a default metric coordinate system and strict page-independent structure that Adobe PostScript does not have.
At the Seybold Conference on Computer Publishing in September 1989, Dr John Warnock stated that the aim was to be able to send a page description around the world. In order to do this, first, the page-dependent structuring of Adobe PostScript had to be converted into a page-indendent structuring principle suited for drawing pages in any order on the digital graphic display.
But neither Adobe PostScript nor Xerox Interpress, being appearance-oriented page descriptions, had a strong concept of a standard coded character set that structured the imaging process. Adobe PostScript is in fact a strategy to overcome drawing on a digital device with small coded character sets containing incompatible constituencies of character codes.
The Adobe PostScript rasteriser deals with glyph names and not with character codes and some sort of solution had to be sought so that source character information could be synthesised in converting page-dependent PostScript into the page-independent page description model of what in June 1993 was introduced as Portable Document Format version 1.0.
This solution is to try to use font-independent glyph identifiers as glyph names so that the conversion from Adobe PostScript to Adobe Portable Document Format carries forward a clue about the source character information. There is no concept in PDF of page text, as if the source character information were contained in the page description.
This is the core of the commercial conflict between Adobe Systems which is trying to preserve its market share for the Adobe Portable Document Format, and to introduce Adobe PDFXML as a more serviceable and more sustainable solution for computerised full phrase cataloguing, and on the other hand Microsoft XPS XML Paper Specification which does indeed have a concept of page text for computerised full phrase cataloguing.

  • How do I convert pages documents into a pdf format?

Many of the poster layouts do not save well as a ".doc" document.  The formating gets all screwy.  I have only the "pages" option or the ".doc" option for files under the "save as" dropdown.  No professional printing services in my area offer the ability to print pages documents.  They all recommended converting them to pdf.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks, Joe.

In OSX you can print anything to pdf ( see PDF button at bottom left of print dialog).
Pages also exports to pdf Menu > File > Export > PDF
However be aware that OSX will convert any transparent objects to low res 72 dpi bitmaps which are not suitable for commercial printers. Also it takes quite a bit of work to ensure that text is not in cmyk.

  • HP printer no longer prints Pages docs

My HP deskjet 5650 printer suddenly stopped printing Pages documents this afternoon after completing only 8 pages of a 10 page run. The printer does, however, print from other programs such as Preview, my Mac mail program, Appleworks, etc. So this problem seems specifically related to Pages. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled HP driver V 3.3.3 (Universal Binary), as the Software Update recommends. This still does not solve the problem. I've rebooted and turned the printer on and off, and even installed HP driver version 2.7.1 which is specifically for the Max OS X, but nothing seems to work. Any solutions?

It turns out that my HP printer DOES reproduce Pages '08 documents imported from Appleworks, but for some reason, it will not print 2 pages of the 10 page document I was trying to print. I looked at the embedded marks and other aspects of the document, but cannot find anything that makes them different and unprintable in Pages.

  • Unable to open an '08 Pages document

Up until today I had no trouble opening Pages documents submitted to Blackboard, the college academic suite. I could open them, and return them with annotations for correction. But this semester one student with Pages '08 had difficulty, because being unaware of the student's version of Pages, I would return the annotated document saved as Pages '09, and the student was unable to open it. In Pages '09 there is no notification that a Pages '08 document is being opened.
Now the student submits Pages '08 documents in a way that I cannot open them at all. If I attempt to open the student document with Pages '08, this message appears:
+You need a newer version of Pages to open this document.+
I tried opening the same student document with Pages '09 and this message appears:
+The document "---- .pages" could not be read. The document does not have a valid format.+
Opening the student document's Information window, Pages '09 (version 4.0.3) is the default application. Under "more info" the "where from" details are as follows:

Does anyone have an idea what I need to do?

I notice you say you have something on iOS 7.1 which does not work with Pages '08.
    Peter
As I recall, the dropdown menu had no option for os 10.6.8. The sending computer works on os 10.7.5 and the receiving computer operates on 10.6.8. Both iMacs. The Pages app was downloaded from the same CD some time ago. The CD purchase was for three computers and has worked well until recently. No recent upgrades. Are the OSystems above compatible?  Frank

  • I am having trouble printing multi-page documents on my Epson printer. 13" Macbook Pro, Adobe InDesign, Epson WF-7520

I have a multi-page document and I want to print some of the pages, double-sided, to check my work. I can't seem to get the interface to recognise that I want to print a specific range of pages, so it will print just one page [no double-sided] or, I assume, it will print the WHOLE LOT [not good at this stage!] HEEEELLLLPPP!!
To explain, the dialogue box which opens when you hit Command+P has an option of 'Pages' or 'Range' but 'Range' gives you only two options:  All Pages or A4V. If I click the 'Printer' button I get another dialogue box with more options and from there I can choose to print 'All' or 'Pages' . . . and you change 1 to 1 to say, 1 to 3 for example. There is also an option to print double-sided. But nothing seems to be working and as soon as you finish with this second dialogue box it seems to forget every parameter you choose there. The summary page on the first dialogue box also seems suspiciously sketchy on details of what, exactly, it is about to print. By the way I have installed the latest driver set from Apple for this printer. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Thank you so much Eric. I did what you said. I still had the same result, but finally [somehow] I ended up clicking on something which doesn't even look clickable - this is a tiny set of back- and forward arrows in the 'Range' option. Using this feature seems pretty hit-and-miss but I persevered and was able to get it to accept my parameters, i.e. "1 - 2" in range. You have to go into the second ["Printer"] dialogue box each and every time you print, to enable two-sided printing. At last I was able to get it to print pages 1 and 2 of my three-page document. Now maybe I can test-print pages from my 108 page tome! Fingers crossed . . .
