Trouble reconnecting to file server

Our OS X 10.3 computers connect to a file server through Appletalk. When the OSX computers lose connection to the server (usually because of a server restart, or some other maintenance issue), I cannot reconnect to the server shares without first restarting OSX.
Specifically, after losing the connection, I am able to log in to the server and mount the shares to the desktop, but if I try to open the shares, I get a message about the alias being invalid.
This is not an issue with OS X 10.4.
Can anyone suggest a workaround or fix for this (other than restarting)?
thanks.

Just an update on this, in case anyone is able to help. I had to edit /etc/pam.d/smtp and change passwdcolumn to passwordcolumn and I think I've made progress. I now get the following error shown in /var/log/auth.log.
Oct 5 09:31:51 localhost saslauthd[23430]: pam_mysql - MySQL error(You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'FROM mailbox WHERE username = '[email protected]'' at line 1)
Now, the syntax in /etc/postfix/virtual_mailbox_maps.cf is as follows:
query = SELECT maildir FROM mailbox WHERE username='%s'
I'm not sure what the error with this is, though, because if I manually run the query it returns exactly what I would expect.
mysql> SELECT maildir FROM mailbox WHERE username='[email protected]';
+---------------------+
| maildir |
+---------------------+
| [email protected]/ |
+---------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
The maildir for the user exists under /home/vmail, so I don't see it as being a problem there, but the query looks correct. I've compared this with the same query from other guides and it's the same, so it should work, shouldn't it? Again, any help would be appreciated. I've searched around for others experiencing the problem but not come up with anything. I've checked the table and all the columns are there.

  • Having trouble reconnecting render files

    Hi-
I recently had to move a project from one hard drive to another, and although all the files are relatively in the same hierarchy (only the drive itself has changed) when I load the project in it shows almost the entire timeline needing rendering, both audio and video. When they were on the original drive, the entire project was rendered and it was completely done. Now when I look in my audio render folder and it seems that the render files are all split up in three separate project files... as time went on I would "save as" in order to have permanent backups, so maybe FCP is "confused" as to which of those subfolders each audio render file is in. The video render folder is similar, spread out in two different subfolders. So it looks like my render files are split among two folders in video render, and three folders in audio render. FCP never had any trouble with this arrangement before, keeping track fine.
When I select "reconnect" from the menu, "render files" is ghosted... it won't even let me select it. Am I really going to have to re-render everything to get my project back just because the files were moved to another drive?
Or could I try putting all the render files in one drive (move them up a level and out of the subdividing folders). Would that help FCP "find" them to reconnect with them? I'd backup the entire render file folders first in case it didn't work.
    Thanks!
    Leslie Bell

I'd not change project file names mid stream... it's really best to backup OFF the computer too. A USB flash drive works really well for this... When you change project names, and capture or render, the files get put into new folders named the same as the new project file's name... sort of messy.
You can put a flash drive in a USB port, and each day, just drag your project file to it, replacing the old... that way no matter what happens to your computer, the project file will not be affected.

  • Having trouble saving tiff files to server

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble saving tiff files to our server (a mac pro running OSX 10.5.7 client not server). I get the error message 'could not save "filename" because write access was not granted. The disk in question is set to ignore permissions and the other 3 Macs on the network have no problems.
Bizarrely this only seems to happen when saving as a Tiff file, I can save as JPEG without issue! The file will usually save after a few attempts, sometimes six or seven save as' are needed.
This problem comes and goes, but at the moment its pretty bad.
This is becomming very frustrating as Tiff is our prefered format and we work as a team so have to save to the server.
    Any ideas?

Just to expand on Buko's correct ansswer, this is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

I'm being shown an error pop-up message periodically saying "There was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type 'file:' are not supported." I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and at no time am I actually having trouble connecting to the server, but this message continues to pop-up several times a day at random intervals. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or is my computer just having a glitch? Other than that, and a mildly sticking caps lock button, it's working perfectly.
    Thank you!

Alright it didn't solve it. Any other suggestions?
I haven't suggested a solution yet. I want to know whether you still get the messages while Time Machine is disabled. Do you? If so, try any or all of the solutions proposed in this thread:

  • SBS 2008 - Windows 8.1+ clients trouble accessing file server shares

I have now upgraded 1 Windows 8 machine to Windows 8.1, and also clean installed another with Win 8.1 update 1 today, and both machines have trouble accessing the SBS2008 file server shares by UNC. If I browse by IP address of the server it seems to work
flawlessly. The odd thing is that it's sporadic. So if I browse in explorer to "\\*netbiosname*\share" the Win8.1 machine will sometimes be able to access the share, and other times it will fail with a "network unable to reach location etc.."
error. When it does work, it can take up to 5-10 minutes while explorer is frozen before the share is accessed. We're running quite a few Windows 8 machines without a problem, but it seems to be a specific problem with 8.1. Any idea?

This doesn't seem to fix this specific problem. I had a few days of "luck", but now it's back. I just upgraded another co-workers machine to Win8.1 and he advised me that he's been having the same problem even with the above fix applied. His issue
is when opening an office document that's located on the file server using location "\\servername\filename.xlsx", it takes a very long time (minutes) to open the excel file. This was happening to me as well, and if I tried to browse the network during
this period, Windows Explorer would sometimes give me path not found, and unspecified error. I will try and capture a screen of the error when it occurs. Any ideas??
edit: I have also noticed an unresponsive Windows Explorer for a few seconds to a minute over the last few days, which is a pretty good indicator that it's still happening on my machine.
The odd thing is, if I use the IP address of the file server, everything is fine. I changed all of my links to use the IP since October when Win8.1 was released to combat this problem, and only changed them back to the server name for testing since I want
to start deploying Win8.1 to others in the office. Unless I can fix this bug, they'll have to be stuck on Win8.
    Thanks,

  • Error when running reports: "File Server needs to be re-initialized"

    Hi.
This error "File Server needs to be re-initialized" appears when our users try to run reports on 11.5.10. EBS.
There is also a message box that appears and reads:
"A error occurred while attempting to establish a conection to Application File Server. There may be a network configuration problem, or the TNS listener may not be running."
This is a problem in our test environment. We recently ran autoconfig on the test side.
I have checked Metalink and also wider google search.
Perhaps we have an issue with the tnsnames files? Well, I verified this and the tnsnames in production and test, and they are the same.
    Perhaps a listener.ora file issue?
"The issue is caused by the variables APPLFSTT and APPLFSWD is not being set properly in the <8.0.6_ORACLE_HOME> listener.ora file. " (Note 263654.1)
I am trying to verify the meaning of the following (in listener):
    ( SID_DESC = ( SID_NAME = FNDFS )
    ( ORACLE_HOME = /oracli2/oracle/testora/8.0.6 )
    ,APPLFSTT=
    TEST_BALANCE;TEST;PROD_806_BALANCE;TEST_FO;TEST_806_BALANCE;PROD_FO,APPLFSWD=/or
    acli2/oracle/testappl/admin;/oracli2/oracle/testcomn/temp;/oracli2/oracle/testco
    mn/html/oam/nonUix/launchMode/restricted' )
In the APPLFSTT entry, should there be any mention of "PROD" ? Shouldnt this all be changed to TEST?
Also, comparing this to the PROD listener, the order of APPLFSTT is different:
    TEST: APPLFSTT=
    TEST_BALANCE;TEST;PROD_806_BALANCE;TEST_FO;TEST_806_BALANCE
    PROD:APPLFSTT=
    PROD_806_BALANCE;PROD;PROD_BALANCE;PROD_FO,
I have made a copy of our listener in TEst, so I can edit the existing one. Trouble is, not sure if I even should try to edit it!
    Any suggestions, much appreciated.

Yes thanks for that. Metalink has informed me to do the same, basically.
But I am in the middle of a cloning, so I will finish that then run autoconfig once again.
I already ran Autoconfig on both source and target, so will do again once this process is over.
    Cheers.

  • Server 2012 File Server Cluster Shadow Copies Disappear Some Time After Failover

    Hello,
I've seen similar questions posted on here before however I have yet to find a solution that worked for us so I'm adding my process in hopes someone can point out where I went wrong.
The problem: After failover, shadow copies are only available for a short time on the secondary server.  Before the task to create new shadow copies happens the shadow copies are deleted.  Failing back shows them missing on the primary server as
    well when this happens.
We have a 2 node (hereafter server1 and server2) cluster with a quorum disk.  There are 8 disk resources which are mapped to the cluster via iScsi.  4 of these disks are setup as storage and the other 4 are currently set up as shadow copy volumes
    for their respective storage volume.
Previously we weren't using separate shadow copy volumes and seeing the same issue described in the topic title.  I followed two other topics on here that seemed close and then setup the separate shadow copy volumes however it has yet to alleviate the
issue.  These are the two other topics :
    Topic 1: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ba0d2568-53ac-4523-a49e-4e453d14627f/failover-cluster-server-file-server-role-is-clustered-shadow-copies-do-not-seem-to-travel-to?forum=winserverClustering
    Topic 2: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/c884c31b-a50e-4c9d-96f3-119e347a61e8/shadow-copies-missing-after-failover-on-2008-r2-cluster
After reading both of those topics I did the following:
    1) Add the 4 new volumes to the cluster for shadow copies
    2) Made each storage volume dependent on it's shadow copy volume in FCM
    3) Went to the currently active node directly and opened up "My Computer", I then went to the properties of each storage volume and set up shadow copies to go to the respective shadow copy volume drive letter with correct size for spacing, etc.
    4) I then went back to FCM and right clicked on the corresponding storage volume and choose "Configure Shadow Copy" and set the schedule for 12:00 noon and 5:00 PM.
    5) I noticed that on the nodes the task was created and that the task would failover between the nodes and appeared correct.
    6) Everything appears to failover correctly, all volumes come up, drive letters are same, shadow copy storage settings are the same, and 4 scheduled tasks for shadow copy appear on the current node after failover.
Thinking everything was setup according to best practice I did some testing by changing file contents throughout the day making sure that previous versions were created as scheduled on server1.  I then rebooted Server1 to simulate failure.  Server2
picked up the role within about 10 seconds and files were avaiable.  I checked and I could still see previous versions for the files after failover that were created on server1.  Unfortunately that didn't last as the next day before noon I was going
to make more changes to files to ensure that not only could we see the shadow copies that were created when Server1 owned the file server role but also that the copies created on Server2 would be seen on failback.  I was disappointed to discover that
the shadow copies were all gone and failing back didn't produce them either.
Does anyone have any insight into this issue?  I must be missing a switch somewhere or perhaps this isn't even possible with our cluster type based on this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc779378%28v=ws.10%29.aspx
Now here's an interesting part, shadow copies on 1 of our 4 volumes have been retained from both nodes through the testing, but I can't figure out what makes it different though I do suspect that perhaps the "Disk#s" in computer management / disk
management perhaps need to be the same between servers?  For example, on server 1 the disk #s for cluster volume 1 might be "Disk4" but on server 2 the same volume might be called "Disk7", however I think that operations like this
and shadow copy are based on the disk GUID and perhaps this shouldn't matter.
Edit, checked on the disk numbers, I see no correlation between what I'm seeing in shadow copy and what is happening to the numbers.  All other items, quotas, etc fail and work correctly despite these diffs:
    Disk Numbers on Server 1:
Format: "shadow/storerelation volume = Disk Number"
    aHome storage1 =   16
    aShared storage2 = 09
    sHome storage3 =   01
    sShared storage4 = 04
    aHome shadow1 =   10
    aShared shadow2 = 11
    sHome shadow3 =   02
    sShared shadow4 = 05
    Disk numbers on Server 2:
    aHome storage1 = 16 (SAME)
    aShared storage2 = 04 (DIFF)
    sHome storage3 = 05 (DIFF)
    sShared storage4 = 08 (DIFF)
    aHome shadow1 = 10 (SAME)
    aShared shadow2 = 11 (SAME)
    sHome shadow3 = 06 (DIFF)
    sShared shadow4 = 09 (DIFF)
Thanks in advance for your assistance/guidance on this matter!

    Hello Alex,
Thank you for your reply.  I will go through your questions in order as best I can, though I'm not the backup expert here.
    1) "Did you see any event ID when the VSS fail?
please offer us more information about your environment, such as what type backup you are using the soft ware based or hard ware VSS device."
I saw a number of events on inspection.  Interestingly enough, the event ID 60 issues did not occur on the drive where shadow copies did remain after the two reboots.  I'm putting my event notes in a code block to try to preserve formatting/readability.
I've written down events from both server 1 and 2 in this code block, documenting the first reboot causing the role to move to server 2 and then the second reboot going back to server 1:

We are using Symantec NetBackup.  The client agent is installed on both server1 and 2.  We're backing them up based on the complete drive letter for each storage volume (this makes recovery easier).  I believe this is what you would call "software
based VSS".  We don't have the infrastructure/setup to do hardware based snapshots.  The drives reside on a compellent san mapped to the cluster via iScsi.

  • Unable to access UNC path on 2012 R2 file server with ABE enabled

    Brief Description:
We have granted access to people via a domain local group on a folder on a file server that is three levels deep from the share, i.e. \\servercluster\share\folder1\folder2\folder3, where folder3 is where the group is granted Read & Execute
access.  The share has Access-Based Enumeration (ABE) enabled and the Everyone group has Full Control share permissions.  We also use DFS, so the path for that is \\domain\dfsrootname\folderfororganization\share\folder1\folder2\folder3.  People
in the aforementioned group only have access to folder3, its subfolders, and files.  They do not have any access to folder2 or any of the other folders higher in the tree at all.  Also, consider that folder3 contains a subfolder folder4, which is
    simply inheriting permissions.
What we have found is that clients running Windows 7 SP1 have strange access issues when attempting to access the folder via either the DFS or cluster name UNC paths.
Detailed Testing Results Accessing Folder3 Directly:
NOTE:  "UNC path" in the following test results means either the DFS or the cluster name share path.  The results are the same regardless which path is used.
1 - Enter UNC path without trailing backslash in Windows Explorer's address bar:
Windows Explorer seems to do nothing for about 30 seconds and then displays the following error:
    "Windows cannot access <UNC path>
Check the spelling of the name.  Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network.  To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose."
2 - Enter UNC path with trailing backslash in Windows Explorer's address bar:
The same error encountered in #1 is displayed immediately.
3 - Enter UNC path with or without trailing backslash but contained in double quotes in Windows Explorer's address bar:
Internet Explorer opens and displays the error:
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
4 - Enter UNC path without trailing backslash in Run dialog box:
    An error message immediately appears:
    "<UNC path>
The specified path does not exist.
Check the path and then try again."
5 - Enter UNC path with trailing backslash in Run dialog box:
    Same as #4.
6 - Enter UNC path without trailing backslash but contained in double quotes in Run dialog box:
    Same as #4.
7 - Enter UNC path with trailing backslash and contained in double quotes in Run dialog box:
Windows Explorer opens the correct UNC path location and displays the folder contents.  This is the expected behavior for all of these attempts.
8 - Create Shortcut to UNC path by performing #7 and then dragging the folder icon in Windows Explorer's address bar to either to the desktop or the Favorites section, and then attempt to access the folder via
    the shortcut.
    Same as #7.
9 - Attempt to create a shortcut to the UNC path using the New Shortcut wizard:
Unable to successfully create the shortcut, regardless if you add a backslash at the end or enclose the path in double qutoes.  When you press Next after entering the UNC path, you receive the following error:
"The file <UNC path> cannot be found."
10 - Disable ABE on the share and repeat all tests:
All tests with ABE disabled on the share have the same result as #7.  There is no issue whatsoever accessing the desired folder when ABE is disabled.
    Other Notable Behaviors:
If the aforementioned folder (folder3) contains one or more subfolders (e.g. folder4), you are able to access those subfolders via UNC path directly and then go up one level to folder3 without issue, even when ABE is enabled.  You just cannot access
folder3 directly via UNC path unless you attempt to access it via the method used in #7 above or a successfully created shortcut.
Adding a user account directly to the folder3 ACL rather than using group membership makes no difference.
If access is granted to folder4 instead of folder3 (the fourth folder deep rather than the third), accessing folder4 directly via UNC path is not an issue regardless of ABE status or attempted access method.
Windows 8 and 8.1 clients have no trouble directly accessing the folder's UNC path via any method.  The unusual, undesirable behavior seen in Windows 7 is non-existent on Windows 8.x clients.
    Systems Involved:
    Client:  Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x86
Server:  Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard in cluster
    Other Details About the Systems:
Both the client and the file server cluster are in the domain AD DS domain.
The client and the file server cluster are in different subnets.
There is no firewall or other packet inspection or compression service/device in between the client and server (not even Windows Firewall).
    Question:
Is there a way to fix this behavior with Windows 7 clients and ABE enabled on the share so that it works correctly without forcing the clients or server to use SMBv1 or disabling ABE on the shares?

    7-Zip 9.20
    Adobe Flash Player 13 ActiveX
    Cisco WebEx Meetings
    Java 7 Update 51
It should be noted that I can't repeat the behavior on my test machine again today after some changes were made in our environment.
Today, I found that someone had modified permissions on the folder to give the group my test account was a member of rights to traverse the folder hierarchy from the root of the share.  Additionally, in testing something with FIPS mode, I ended up reverting
my virtual machine to an older snapshot.
After removing the extra permissions that weren't present when I was doing my testing and reverting to the older snapshot, I  am not having issues accessing the real equivalent of folder3 directly in Windows Explorer via DFS UNC path or creating a shortcut
    with the New Shortcut wizard.
Things have been fundamentally changed and I cannot repeat the behavior on this particular folder.  I will see if I can recreate the same situation on another folder.

  • Help me Decide on OpenBSD or Solaris as my web and file server please

    Hi
    5 questions
i have been using OpenBSD as my Web and file server for a while now
    and FreeBSD as my Desktop
i decided on OpenBSD as my Server because of its Security
    1) But now i hear Solaris is the most Secure OS pn the Planet? is this true
    And which is real Unix?
i seem to always have trouble with things such as PHP on OpenBSD
Most of my pages run as *.html but i also have a forum which uses PHP 4
But all my PHP pages come up blank..
i am always encountering errors using PHP
    2) If i Switch to Solaris will it b even harder to use or
is it precompiled with PHP 4 and higher when i install Apache
    3) Also what about cgi and the ability to use *.htaccess files should i use them
    4) Also i i still would like to generate SSH keys ssh-keygen
is that possible?Forcing the user to login using only a key and
    not a password on SSH
    5) Does Solaris have any Linux compatibility as well?as FreeBSD has
Concider me a newbie even though i use to post on this forum once before
i am always experimenting trying new things out

Either will work just fine. Since you're asking in the Sun forums, you should receive more Solaris replies of course! :-)
The weak point in your setup (as far as security goes) would be the use of PHP either way...

  • Replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 files server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished

I am wanting to replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 file server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished.  For the moment I just need some "high level" guidance, little details can be worked out once I know
which direction I will go.  I was considering that DFS might be a way to help get through the process although when finished the 2012R2 Files server will be by itself with no other file server planned at this time.  DFS can stay installed for maybe
future purposes but clearly I wouldn't need the DFS Replication with only one machine.
Here's a few details of the environment....
    1.  DC's are 2012R2 but it is still 2003 DFL because the old 2003 DCs are still present.  But likely they will be gone and the DFL elevated before I start on the File Server project
    2. Nearly all machines in the facility have a shortcut on the "All Users" Desktop that points to the existing old File Server.  Editing or replacing that shortcut would be a major pain,...hence why I want to keep the same machine name at least,
and maybe the same IP if not too much trouble.  This way the existing shortcut would continue to work with the new 2012R2 File Server.  The UNC path represented in that shortcut is also configured into one or more of our major business applications,
futher emphasizing the need to keep the UNC path the same throughout the process.
    3. The facility runs 24/7/365 but is "light" on weekends.  The political environment is such that there is little to no tolerance for any down time at all.
    4. Would DFS (based from the 2012R2 machine) be a good tool to get where I need to go?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi Sharon,
I've done some more reading and have a few new ideas to run past you....
Yes regular DFS wouldn't help and the Namespace would still be different than how it was with just the old server. However I was thinking DFS Replication could replace the purpose of RoboCopy and it would keep the two locations "in sync" until I was ready
to flip over to the new server.  DFS Rep can exist independently of a DFS Namespace, so a Namespace is not even needed. It needs a minimum of 2003R2 for the "later & better" DFS Rep but I believe 2003 can do an "in place" upgrade to 2003R2, so I would upgrade
the old server to 2003R2 first.  As long as the DFS Rep on 2012R2 and 2003R2 will properly interact I think that will work.
Thanks for the reg info on the Shares.  I'm debating if editing that would reg file would really be much better than manually creating the Shares on the new server while the DFS Replication was doing its job.  I'll probably export that Key as a
safety move whether I use it or not.
Once the DFS Rep is fully in sync and the Shares are in place on the new server, I figure I would then:
    1. Remove the DFS Replication Object (optionally remove DFS Services completely)
    2. Rename the old File Server to something else and set it to DHCP
    3. Rename the new File Server to the name I want to use and give it the IP the old server had.
    How does that sound?

  • Apple Support said OSX Server could not be used as a file server only

    Hi There,
We bought OSX server thinking it would be easier than MS Small Business Server 2003 to setup, administer and maintain, as well as be more compatible with our mac studio.
The simple setup we would like is:
    - A file server for our Mac studio (7x macs)
    - A "My Documents" style redirect to backup email from the client machines
    - Some sort of secondary backup to a HD on the server (primary Backup is already taken care of)
We're using a single 1.8ghz G5 box as the hardware
After a lot of trouble with the documentation and the setup example in the manual, I called Apple Tech Support.
I was told in no uncertain terms that if we didn't have a fully qualified domain name on the server (and all the services needed to run it), then I could not configure the server as a simple File Server with a My Documents redirect and that Apple could not support me. - IS THIS TRUE?
I am not a network/IT/PC guy, I'm a graphic designer, but I've found the installation and setup of MS Small Business Server to be much easier than OSX so far (despite the MS documentation).
Any help or direction would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

    Hello,
If you need to just setup a FileServer then you do not need OpenDirectory or DNS. You just need AFP and Windows File Sharing turned on.
You can create a windows workgroup and setup shares in WorkGroup Manager using the internal users and groups database.
When the windows clients boot up you could set up a persistent mapping of a volume which would contain your email data. You would use a \\192.168.x.x type connection from the RUN menu.
It sounds like you could do with some more help on how best to use the server. I rekon you would be better off not having a simple fileserver (though it would work!) and make use of the extra functions availiable in the server software. On OS 10.4 server you can create a Windows Domain Controller that would allow all your PC home directories to be stored on the server, this will ensure that the Desktop, My Documents and anything elese the user stores in their profile will be safe and backed up on the server. You can also do this for the the Macs, in fact you can set it up so you can loggon to any PC in the office and your user information, desktop wallpaper and other settings follow you, if you were to then logon to a Mac you would have your documents follow you around the office. This works great for people hot-desking and using different types of computer.
I don't understand why you were advised to have a fully-qualified domain. When I have setup OpenDirectory and Windows Domain Controllers with DNS and LDAP etc I have just made up a domain name on the DNS server like "mycompany.net" and call the server "server.mycompany.net" and printers "epson.mycompany.net". The only problem with this is because if you were to use a domain name that is registerd on the internet then your computers would have trouble resolving that name, so don't use "apple.com" or "google.com".
    Good luck,
    David

2)node manager is running on both machines
3)An admin server myserver on the local machine at port 7001
4)In the admin tree under Machines a new machine is created 'Machine1' with Node manager Listen Address: 172.17.2.201
              5) The managed server 'BEAServerMan1 ' instance is created with listen Address 172.17.2.201 and port 7705. This Server is assigened to Machine1. The server also belongs to a cluster 'Cluster1' where the 172.17.2.201:7705 is part of the Cluster Address.

  • I'm having trouble with Snow Leopard server disconnecting.

I'm having trouble with Snow Leopard server disconnecting. Recently upgraded my laptops to latest MacBook Pro OSX Lion, but everything has been fine since December until now. I did just add a 2TB Drive to the set-up (OWC Mercury Elite AL-Pro) in a Daisy chain of 2 other 2TB drives and a 3TB Drive that had been working perfectly up until now. I was able to use it yesterday, but now it has gone haywire and I lose connections while working on files or saving files. Have to restart server and it works for a while, but then drops off. Could Server be corrupt?

  • Windows 7 'File server' disconnects when XP machine connects to network

    Hi guys,
We have a small office setup here, we have two Windows 7 machines, three Windows XP machines and one Windows 7 machine that acts as a fileserver (folder sharing and an SVN repository).
Every morning, I turn up to work, turn on my Windows 7 machine and the system works fine, but, as soon as one of my collegues turn up and boot up their Windows XP machines, the fileserver disconnects. The only way to get the fileserver up and running is
to restart it, this is obviously tedious and irritating. It only happens when an XP machine connects to the network and not when a Windows 7 machine connects.
Does anybody have an experience with this sort of issue or have an suggestions to resolve it?
    Thanks, Simon.

Firstly, I am a Tier III Computer Technician/Software Programmer/Network Engineer who has been working on MS OS' since DOS3.
Secondly, Someone named Alex Zhaozx gets the ID10T award as he marked this as a solution. Alex... How is posting a MS OS license a resolve?
There is no resolution posted here.
For understanding, all references to Windows 7 will be marked as TRAP7 in the following info. After reading, you will understand why.
The other major note Simon has not mentioned, is that when the "disconnect" happens, all Windows XP machines can still interface with each other over the network perfectly (accessing each others Shares and drive mappings with zero network connection
issues). The TRAP7 machines can interface will all facets of each of the TRAP7 and Windows XP computers on the network with zero connection issues. It appears MS has placed a condition or timer to cause the disconnect to XP on introduction to the network. Simon
is slightly incorrect is his statement this only happens when a XP machine is booted, as it happens on all connection methods (whether it be wake from sleep and attempt to reconnect or access TRAP7 share/drive, idle computer attempting to access TRAP7 share/drive,
Windows XP computer attempting to access files on the TRAP7 file server for the first time, after each have been up and running independently (on the network) perfectly for hours...
We have a larger scope than Simon with 45 machines and 17 of them being Windows XP, the others are TRAP7 (32 and 64 bit varied) with 1 on Vista (The beginning of the end for MS OS').
I have been searching all MS sites and the other techie sites for a resolve and there has not been one "valid" resolution to this problem they have caused. Or was is my fault for using Windows 7 on a near perfect network?
C'mon maaaan. (intended for Bill Gates) Get this resolved or get out of the OS game, there are so many better OS's out there. Stop TRYING to DO things and start DOING them the right instead.
Belief: This is an issue caused by MS with full intention of forcing everyone to fully convert all at once because they are not getting the money they used to, as the global economy is now whacked. You notice... They have never stepped up to say anything
in this post. They just quickly made an attempt to brush this under the carpet.
BTW Alex Z: When you are ready to step up and get involved, let me know. I will get you any technical information you need to get this resolved.

  • We're having trouble connecting to the server

    HI,
We install SharePoint 2013 on Azure and were using it from clients via vpn connection to our Azure virtual Net.
When trying to edit or add office document from the client  we get this error: "we're having trouble connecting to the server..."
sometimes will get the "document is locked ..." which is typical for a document which is still locked by office , I guess its all related to some connection failure from the office client.
    Thanks

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you failed to edit or add office document from the client.
Usually a file is locked when a particular user has ‘checked out’ the file for editing purposes. A write lock is created so that no other user can edit this file simultaneously.
There can be numerous reasons for this such as:
             1.    System crashes while the file is still open.
             2.    File has been closed unexpectedly.
             3.    Check in was not successful.
             4.    Network connection is lost while file is still open.
In most of the cases, the write lock still exist for the file so its gives an editing error.
To resolve the issue, you follow the steps in the article as below:
SharePoint error: File is locked for editing by ‘domain\username' : SharePoint Tutorial #6
