Trouble selecting objects pages 5

Productivity killer.
Part 1:  The program:
Working in pages 5.2, I have created multiple text and shape objects.  The shape objects (thin non filled rectangles) are IMPOSSIBLE to select.  Only by the remotest of chance do I ever get one. The cursor remains an I-beam text insertion cursor.  The 'drag from the margin' trick of Pages 09 doesn't apply.  If I click and drag anywhere on the page all objects become higlighted in blue, but still not selectable - and it is ALL of them, not any particular one.
Almost impossible to use.  Very, very frustrated.
Part 2:  This support discussion.
Apple has rolled all pages versions into one thread here.  So it is very, very difficult to narrow a search.  Pages 5 is a completely different program.  NONE of the tips for such idiosynchratic behaviours in 09 apply here - yet any general search yields mostly posts from 2006-2010.
Any help/feedback would be most welcome.
ADVthanksANCE.

Zoom in and click on the edge as picas suggests. It is possible you have clicked into the shapes and chaged them to text boxes, so it is trying to select internal text. Annoying, but part of the design.
Apple never separates the versions into different forums. So no luck there and searching on problems is pretty random at the best of times.

  • Trouble selecting and moving objects near text in Adobe Illustrator? Try this.

    It's been 4 years since I left Corel DRAW for Adobe Illustrator. One thing I could never get used to is the crazy way text has an impenetrable invisible sheet over it making it hard to select objects near or behind it.
    With Corel DRAW I was used to be able to select text by simply clicking on the visible area of the text. Selecting stuff behind the text by clicking between letters or right next to a decender was never a problem. But Illustrator is a different story.
    Tonight I finally found a way to make selecting text in Illustrator behave more like Corel DRAW.
    I wrote it up here: http://www.johnstanowski.com/blog/trouble-selecting-and-moving-objects-near-text-in-adobe- illustrator-try-this/
    Just thought I'd share!

    It's not spam, but thanks for assuming.
    I was up really late writing that blog post. Posting a link was the quickest way to share and be able to go to bed.
    Plus it's rather lengthy. I thought that would be rude to use an Adobe forum for my articles.
    If you saw my blog you will have seen there's not much going on there at all, and no calls to action to hire me. I don't have anything to gain by getting traffic.
    And, yeah, layers work for selecting, but that slows you down. Who would want to look away from their work to find and select a layer when they're trying to tweak positions of objects? Layers suck for selecting quickly.
    And there must be something wrong with me but I find using Type Object Selection by Path Only by itself hard to use. I'd really just like to click on the text itself rather than an invisible hairline you have to probe to find.
    Here's the post. I hope people who had trouble like me find it helpful.
    Do you have trouble selecting objects near Point Type in Adobe Illustrator? You’ve been there. You want to select an object. Problem is, it’s really close to piece of Point Type. All too often we try to select objects that wind up being unreachable because they lie too close to a piece of Point Type, which we wind up selecting instead. Luckily, after years of angst, I discovered a solution.
    Point Type in Adobe Illustrator is funny. There’s this invisible “shield” around it. This shield is much larger (at least it seems that way) than the text itself. It prevents you from selecting objects behind text by clicking between letter and words. This shield is particularly meddlesome with lowercase letters and decenders because we think surely we can click on that blue box (or whatever) because it seems far enough away from that Point Type. But the lowercase “g” in the Point Type’s territory.
    Okay, now that we know we’re talking about the same thing, let’s move on to the solutions.
    Step 1. Check ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ in Preferences
    You’ll find this option in Preferences/Type. Click it and that nasty text shield goes away. But there’s a price to pay. With this option activated, the only way you can select your text is by clicking on the text path, a super, tiny, thin baseline thingy under all the letters, but above decenders. It’s really hard to grab. To do it right you need to slowly approach the text path with your cursor. When you’re right over it, Illustrator will let you know by adding a small black square to your cursor. Now, you can click, hold and move your text. But this workflow can really slow you down and break your rhythm, maybe even more so with it turned off.
    Step 2. Add the ‘Outline Object’ Effect
    Select your Point Type and, from under the Effects Menu/Path/, select Outline Object. This effect does something really sweet to text in Illustrator: it lets your Point Type objects be treated as if their were converted to Outlines. You can still edit the text, but as far as selecting it, Illustrator now considers it outlines and shapes instead of a text object. Basically, it now considers the Path of the text to be the text itself! Now, since we’ve already checked ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ we can now click on the text to select it. Just the text. Not the baseline, not the wacky invisible shield surrounding it.
    And now… you can select things behind the text by clicking between words and letters. And the ONLY way to select Point Type is to click on the visible parts of the text itself! Problem solved.
    Potential Problem:
    Too much of a good thing could be a bad thing. Let’s say you have some Point Type set in a very light face and it’s pretty small or you’re zoomed way out. Selecting that text could be a problem since you have to actually click on the text itself. Actually it isn’t that hard, it may just require an extra click to grab it. If you have a set of smaller, light-faced bits of text, you can elect to just not apply the Outline Object effect to these. They’ll get their ‘shield’ back and be easier to click on. And since they’re so small, they don’t pose a problem with selecting things behind them anyway.
    Applying this technique to your old files
    Now that you’ve learned this awesome new way to work around type in Illustrator, you may be anxious to open yesterday’s project and get back to work. But you may be not be looking forward to applying the Outline Object effect to each and every piece of type. For this you can use Illustrator’s “Select Same” feature. Select one piece of text. Then from the Select Menu click on Object/Text Objects. Now ALL of your text objects will be selected, and you can apply the Outline Object effect to all of them at once!
    That’s it. If you build ads or work with a lot of type in Illustrator, you’re about to be able to work a lot faster… and happier.

  • Is there a way to zoom into selected objects in Pages?

    Working in the page layout mode in Pages and I note that there is no way to zoom into a particular object or selected objects. This is really a pain if you are working on a poster much larger than the screen and you want to zoom right to a particular object. Zooming only seems to go to upper left corner and you have to scrool around to find the object you were working on.
    Has anyone figured out some magical way to zoom into an object on a page?

    This may not be the perfect answer, but it's pretty good in some situations. Smart Scroll has a grab hand fetaure that you may like.

  • Script to apply a random CMYK swatches from a group of swatches to selected objects.

    I would like to write some scripts for randomising the allocation of swatches to adjacent object.
    Example:
    Imagine a map of Europe and all her nation states/territories. I have a User Defined Swatch Library. I can open the AI document it was made from as I understand from this thread that having the swatches as objects on the page makes them easier to be referenced in a script.
    I want to iterate through the selected objects and randomly assign one of the colours in the swatch document as a fill to each object. It would be great if hidden swatches (they are all small rectangular 'colour chip' filled paths) on page were not included in the reference swatches randomly choosen from.
    Iterating the selected objects I can do, but not sure what references I need to use to create an array of swatches to randomly choose from.
    I see I can make an array of swatches using the general swatch group from Adobe's CreateSwatchGroup scripts:
    JS
    var docRef = app.documents.add(DocumentColorSpace.CMYK)
    // Create a new SwatchGroup
    var swatchGroup = docRef.swatchGroups.add();
    swatchGroup.name = "CreateSwatchGroup";
    // Get list of swatches in general swatch group
    var genSwatchGroup = docRef.swatchGroups[0];
    // Collect 5 random swatches from general swatch group and move to new group
    var i = 0;
    while (i < 5) {
              var swatches = genSwatchGroup.getAllSwatches();
              swatchCount = swatches.length;
              var swatchIndex = Math.round(Math.random() * (swatchCount - 1)); // 0-based index
              // New swatch group does not allow patterns or gradients
              if (swatches[swatchIndex].color.typename != "PatternColor" && swatches[swatchIndex].color.typename != "GradientColor") {
                        swatchGroup.addSwatch(swatches[swatchIndex]);
                        i++;
    // Updates swatch list with swatches moved to new swatch group
    swatches = swatchGroup.getAllSwatches();
    // [… etc etc]
    AS
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
    activate
              set docRef to make new document with properties {color space:CMYK}
    -- Create a new SwatchGroup
              set swatchGroupRef to make new swatchgroup in current document with properties {name:"CreateSwatchGroup"}
    -- Get list of swatches in general swatch group
              set genSwatchGroup to swatchgroup 1 of docRef
    -- Collect 5 random swatches from the general swatch group and move to new group
              set i to 0
              repeat until i is 5
                        set swatchesRef to get all swatches genSwatchGroup
                        set swatchCount to count every item in swatchesRef
                        set swatchIndex to random number from 1 to swatchCount
                        set currentSwatch to item swatchIndex of swatchesRef
      -- New swatch group does not allow patterns or gradients
                        if class of color of currentSwatch is not pattern color info and class of color of currentSwatch is not gradient color info then

                                  set i to i + 1
                        end if
              end repeat
    -- [… etc etc]
    If someone can help me to create the Swatch Array object of swatches loaded from a seperate document (or unique layer) then I think I can work my way to changing the fill on the existing paths (the nations in my map of Europe example).
    Would be very cool if I could detect neighbooring paths (nieghbooring nations in my map of Europe example) make sure the colour being assigned is not within a certain hue/CMYK range of the random colour and if it is rechoose random colour. I have no idea how to perform the logic of determining neighbooring paths in an Illustartor script. Anybody?!
    I'd prefer Applescript for sake of readiblity and also I'm learning AS ATM. Plus I'm using Script Debugger.app (which is excellent) to work with AS and I can't seem to run JSX scripts from within Extend Script Toolkit 2 (perhaps I need to make my scripts point to Illustrator?)

  • Help too selecting object [JS]

    Hi there
    I am problems selecting an object by it id or label. In my script a list items on on page and if the text are using ParagraphStyleName "Itembox 9" i save it in array.
    But how do i select the object by id or label ?
    I have to do this to make changes on the object later.
    Does anyone know about good books on indesign scripting  with javascript ?
    Regards
    TT.
    test()
    function test(){
    var myDocument = app.documents.item(0);
    var myElement = myDocument.pages.item(0).pageItems;
    var myObjectsToSelect = new Array;
    for(myItemCounter = 0; myItemCounter < myElement.length; myItemCounter ++){
          var myElementID = myElement[myItemCounter].id;
       try {
        var myTextParagraphStyleName = myElement[myItemCounter].parentStory.appliedParagraphStyle.name;
           if(myTextParagraphStyleName == "item_box_9"){
               $.writeln("Element Id ", myElementID);
              var myTextContents = myElement[myItemCounter].contents;
             $.writeln("Text  ", myTextContents);
             myObjectsToSelect.push(myElementID);
          catch (Error) {
    // error

    In contrast with the interface, in scripting you rarely need to select objects in order to do something with them. You collect certain text frames in your array myObjectsToSelect. If e.g. you want to move them, you'd do something like this:
    for (i = 0; i < myObjectsToSelect.length; i++)
        myObjectsToSelect[i].move (...);
    What do you want to do with them?

  • Select previous page items or next page items (IDCS3)

    Hello all,
    How can I refer to previous page or its item? I am trying to do something below. if a textFrame with label "myFrame" is missing on current page go to next page (or may try to next page)
    for (var i=0; i<=myTotalPage-1; i++)
    app.activeWindow.activePage =myDoc.pages[i];
    //$.writeln ("Page is :"+myDoc.pages[i].name);
    if(!(myDoc.pages[i].textFrames.itemByName("sections")!=null))
    var myText="sometext";
    myDoc.pages[i].previousItem ().textFrames.itemByName("myFrame").insertionPoints.item(-1).properties = { appliedCharacterStyle : "myCharacterStyle", contents:myText};
    else{
    var myText="anotherText";
    myDoc.pages[i].textFrames.itemByName("myFrame").insertionPoints.item(0).properties = { appliedCharacterStyle : "myCharacterStyle", contents:myText};
    I know that previousItem () is not supported here, just added it to make the things clear.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    TIA,

    Hello again,
    Kasyan's suggestion
    var myPreviousPage=mydoc.pages[i].previousItem(myPage);
    do not prompt for any error if selected first page.
    Harbs suggestion though prompts error if selected first page (obviously there is no  previous page)
    var myPreviousPage = doc.pages.item(page.documentOffset+1);
    but both of them fails if I try
    myPreviousPage.textFrames.itemByName("myFrame").insertionPoints.item(-1).properties
    = { appliedCharacterStyle : "myCharacterStyle", contents:myText}; //Object is invalid
    but works for the next page (at least Kasyan's suggestion: not tested Harbs idea).
    myNextPage.textFrames.itemByName("myFrame").insertionPoints.item(0).properties
    = { appliedCharacterStyle : "myCharacterStyle", contents:myText};
    I beleive this has nothing to do with insertionPoints(-1) I am trying for myPreviousPage case and ID do look for back pages???????? Simply getting nuts.
    Any ideas???

  • Moving selected objects up and down with keyboard is automaticly applying a colour fill.

    Hi,
    My InDesign is strangely applying a colour fill when i move an objects up or down using the directional arrow in my keyboard. If the colour pallet is open. Nudging an object up makes the pallet disappear on the first press. It then reappears on the second press while filling the object (text frame) with black. This is instensly frustrating. How can I stop this? Suggestions would be very appreciated.
    I have already reset the preferences.
    Cheers,

    Thanks for your reply.
    I fixed the problem by replacing the keyboard!

    I have to ask if you reset the prefs uing one of the methods in this thread: Replace Your Preferences If not, there's a good chance you left out one of the files, so please try again using one of the listed methods. And please tell us the OS and your version of ID, including the patch level. Obviously this is not normal behavior. It sounds as if the Swatches panel has focus when you are pressing the arrow keys.

  • Hide bounding box of a selected object

    I tried using the feature request page but got an error after typing all this and thankfully I copied all of the text I entered just before hitting submit just in case the website decided to act stupid like it did (would have to retype all of the following and many sites fail at keeping that info or even bringing back the page you were on.. Very bad for users)
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
    Hide Bounding Box of selected objects
    An option to turn this on/off under the view menu > Extras
    Standardizing features like this across your Adobe apps (photoshop, illustrator) would make it more consistent since I was really looking hard to find a way to do this similar to the other apps I mentioned but InDesign failed to do this. It's very distracting trying to apply effects such as a drop shadow and not being able to see the result properly because of the bounding box. I hope this gets implemented ASAP.

    After trying this again, it seemed to go through this time. Hopefully they get this implemented soon.

  • 5.5 hangs when selecting objects

    I run a mid-2010 Macbook Pro with Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz and 8gb RAM.
    When I click on an object - image, text frame - or page in the Pages panel - there is a big spike in CPU usage (e.g. 3% to 60%) and the whole machine hangs for about 5 seconds before the frame indicates it has been selected. It doesn't do this in CS3 or CS4, and didn't do it in CS5.5 when I first installed it, but it did do it before I upgraded from 4 to 8gb RAM, and before I moved from Snow Leopard to Lion, so it doesn't seem to be an OS/memory problem.
    I know there have been similar posts, e.g. http://forums.adobe.com/message/2885091, but none of the suggestions has worked. I have:
    - turned off Preflight and Redraw
    - rebooted
    - re-installed the program
    - reset preferences
    - reformatted the hard disk and installed the new OS
    - quit all other program, closed other ID docs, and ensured RAM and CPU were not overused
    - kept at least 15gb free space on the startup disk
    - tested it on large docs (200 pages, lots of images with complex effects) and on tiny ones (one page, one small text frame)
    The behaviour remains about the same whatever I do.
    Acrobat X has been even worse, e.g. selecting a page or opening a tab or even opening a drop-down menu takes 5-10 seconds. It has been like that since the first install, and re-installing has made no difference. (One day it worked well, but I couldn't figure out what I was doing different.) Acrobat 9 used to work fine, but now it is behaving like X.
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Well I'm pretty sure it did the same under Snow Leopard; Acrobat X was certainly just as bad.
    I do happen to have EPSes (and PNGs) in the file I'm working on now as it's an imported Word doc created by someone else. But it does the same in docs with no images at all.
    What would be the best way of converting the EPS files to .jpg? Bridge/Camera Raw doesn't seem to be able to convert them at all. Preview and Photoshop won't even open them, saying they can't parse the PostScript. I can do them outside Adobe by batch converting with Adapter or somesuch, but it breaks the links with the files so I'd have to spend ages relinking them.
    By font management I assume you mean opening the .indd file from within a package containing a 'Document fonts' folder. I wasn't doing that most of the time but have just tried it now and it makes no difference. The current fonts I am using are:
    adler.ttf
    Bookman Old Style
    Calibri Bold.ttf
    Calibri Italic.ttf
    Calibri.ttf
    Cambria Bold Italic.ttf
    Cambria Bold.ttf
    Cambria Italic.ttf
    Cambria.ttf
    Century Gothic
    fennariolight.ttf
    markingpenheavyregular.ttf
    MinionPro-Regular.otf
    MyriadPro-Regular.otf
    Symbol.ttf
    Tahoma Bold.ttf
    Tahoma.ttf
    TektonPro-Bold.otf
    tektonpro-regular.otf
    Times New Roman Bold Italic.ttf
    Times New Roman Bold.ttf
    Times New Roman Italic.ttf
    Times New Roman.ttf
    Times.dfont
    Verdana Bold.ttf
    Verdana Italic.ttf
    Verdana.ttf
    How do I check if they are corrupt?
    Anyway, that wouldn't affect all documents would it, just ones using the corrupt fonts?

  • Select Object tool not working

    Newbie here. I used the Select Object tool once on a document.
    Clicked on the tool on the toolbar.
    Clicked once on the page.
    A blue box appeared.
    Then I double-clocked to edit.
    Well. Since then, no amount of clicking is getting the blue box to appear.
    Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
    I'm trying to remove one line of text. Any better way, perhaps?
    Thanks.
    Acro 8

    Are you trying to select graphics, text, or something else. If you select graphics, then typically a double click with bring up the default editor to edit that graphic. It may be that you do not have the editor specified or on your system.
    For text, use the text touchup tool.

  • Selecting objects on multiple arboards

    Hello
    I can`t find any answer for my question.
    I have 2 artboards. Is there any shortcut for selecting objects only on artboard 1. But not usung selection tool. If I use ctrl+A all objects are selected in my work.
    Why is not working like in InDesign ? Objects on active page are only selected.

    go to Select->All on Active Artboard
    if you use it often, assign a keyboard shortcut

  • Trouble selecting text

    I've never had trouble selecting text by moving the cursor to the beginning of the text and holding down the "mouse" and scrolling down to the end of the area to be copied, pressing the command button + c and voila!  But tonight, the spooks have come and won't let me go directly to anything that is about 6 double spaced lines from the bottom of the page and then wants to put some light sepia colored box.  I'm working on my dissertation and I don't need this trouble.  PLEASE, PLEASE help me figure out if I've accidentally set something wrong.  I need answers ASAP.

    While it's readable, export your document as Word and as RTF so you will have ways to revive it if needed.
    Try to export it as Pages '08
    then open the new Pages '08 document in Pages '09 in hope that the transcoding will clean the odd behavior.
    You may also try to open the doc in an other user account. If it behaves well, you will know that something is corrupted in your current account.
    Most of the time it's the Preferences file :
    Macintosh HD:Users:<userAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
    Quit Pages
    drag the preferences file on the Desktop
    Restart Pages.
    If it behave flawlessly, the problem was in the prefs. Continue to work with the newly created prefs file.
    If nothing change, move the preferences file back in it original location to retrieve your original settings.

  • How to print a selection of pages from a 3000   page PDF without having to scroll two wheels! Also is there a way to set printer options for just black and white? Seems like there is a lot missing here?

    I have been using this for school work as much as possible and have come across a problem. With my lack of knowledge for apple it seems as though I can't navigate myself to a easy answer. The problem hits when I am printing pages off of a large document, and I don't want to print the entire document in color but I have no way "that I can find" for a black and white print option...
    ----- also a larger issue, when printing I need to select 1 page or even 20 pages... The time it takes to use a scroll wheel and the fact if you try and scroll fast sometimes you click off the screen then you have to start scrolling all over again... It seems like you would beagle to input from say page 1224 to 1236.... Instead I have a scroll a wheel? Just doesn't make sense...?
       Can someone please help solve this for me!

    Yes, that fixed it, thanks! I had no idea they clashed like that. I ruthlessly purged all other tables of contents, and then used Layout > Table of Contents to create a new one, and it worked.
    It made more sense after seeing in this thread that table of contents styles are more like presets or entities than styles.

  • New owner here.  How can I select specific pages of a document found on line and print just those pages.  What I see is the ability to select only 1 page at a time and print that one selected page only.   Thanks much.

    New owner here.  I see that in printing I can select one page and print same.  How do I select numerous pages from a document and print only those selected pages? I would not think that I can only select one page at a time.  Thanks much

    Just change the range as illustrated below.  If you don't see that, click the Show Details button.
