Trouble selecting text inside an AP Div

I've been having a problem every time I try to select text within an AP Div container.  Instead fo placing the cursor inside the div, my cursor turns into the hand, and if I'm trying to select, I end up moving the div around.  As far as I know, the "hand" icon should only be there if I hover it over the border of the div itself, or if it is selected at the bottom of the screen (which it is not).
What I've ended up doing throughout the past few weeks of class is double-clicking to select a word, and then from that point, I can select normally, even after I change divs. That is, until I close and reopen the file.
Anybody have any ideas why this is, or how to get around it otherwise?

The reason is probably because the text fills the full height of the AP Div. It's usually not a good idea to put text in an element that has a fixed height, particularly an AP Div. If the text size is increased, it will spill out of the div and overlap other elements below it on the page.
Double-clicking is the correct way to open for editing an element that has more content than its declared height. The alternative is to right-click and select Element View > Full from the context menu. After you have finished editing, press F5 to restore the page.
Well, the templates I've created had only a few lines within them, no where neare filling up the div's.  Also, they all have overflow set to auto so they generate scroll bars.
However, if double-clicking is the correct way to open them for editing, I guess that's that.  Your alternate doesn't seem to make any changes at all in respect to this behaviour.
Although perhaps I should mention that I'm using a Mac (OSX Snow Leopard) to do this, not windows.

  • Pages '09: Can't use AppleScript for selected text inside tables?

When I run get selection on selected text in a Pages document, I get something like this:
<pre>text from character 1 to character 4 of body text of document id 9943974 of application "Pages"</pre>
When I run get selection on selected text inside a table cell in a table in a Pages document, I get something like this:
<pre>text from character 1 to character 4 of some table of document id 3539679 of application "Pages"</pre>
When I run get selection on selected text inside a table cell in ANOTHER table in the same Pages document, I get the exact same thing. It still says "some" table. So there is no way to distinguish between tables if there are more than one table in the same Pages document.
Am I correct in understanding that this means that most AppleScript commands for manipulating text are unusable inside table cells?
For example, it seems impossible to get the properties of the selection when the selection is selected text inside "some" table. So it's impossible do anything about text styles, etc.
Is AppleScript support in Pages ’09 really that limited, or am I missing something?

  • Trouble selecting text

I've never had trouble selecting text by moving the cursor to the beginning of the text and holding down the "mouse" and scrolling down to the end of the area to be copied, pressing the command button + c and voila!  But tonight, the spooks have come and won't let me go directly to anything that is about 6 double spaced lines from the bottom of the page and then wants to put some light sepia colored box.  I'm working on my dissertation and I don't need this trouble.  PLEASE, PLEASE help me figure out if I've accidentally set something wrong.  I need answers ASAP.

While it's readable, export your document as Word and as RTF so you will have ways to revive it if needed.
Try to export it as Pages '08
then open the new Pages '08 document in Pages '09 in hope that the transcoding will clean the odd behavior.
You may also try to open the doc in an other user account. If it behaves well, you will know that something is corrupted in your current account.
Most of the time it's the Preferences file :
    Macintosh HD:Users:<userAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
    Quit Pages
drag the preferences file on the Desktop
    Restart Pages.
If it behave flawlessly, the problem was in the prefs. Continue to work with the newly created prefs file.
If nothing change, move the preferences file back in it original location to retrieve your original settings.

  • Trouble selecting text with touch up tool

I have carefully followed the instructions step by step but I cannot get the touch up text tool to turn into an I-beam in order to select text for touching up the color.  I have tried with several documents with no luck, trashed the preferences to revert to the default status, closed and reopened acrobat. I've used this facility several times in the past to access the properties of the text in order to change its color, but I can't seem to do it now.
I am using Acrobat 9 for mac on an imac (Intel core i3), currently Under OS10.7.3, but I had the same problem under OS 10.6.8.

Are you looking at scanned text or real text. The inability to get an ibeam (it only comes on when you are over text) is an indication you are likely looking at a graphic. Try it on a file you know for sure is text and see if it works there.

  • Having trouble selecting text in Illustrator CS5

    Hi!
I've a little problem, when I select text by double click it do not show me the black selection...I don't know why?
    Any ideas?
    Thx
    Ciao!

If you double-click on a text with the selection tool, the text tool should get selected and the text-cursor is set into the text.
What do you want to do with the text object? Do you want to edit the text (then double clicking is OK) or do you want to push the text around the artboard, then don't double click.

  • Illus. CS3 Windows: Im having trouble selecting text when objects are beneath it.

Technically, I CAN select text, its just a pain in the ***. There is a very fine line to click on and I usually end up selecting the obnect that the text is on top of. If someone knows another way to do this I will be most appreciative.
    Cheers,

Have you perhaps enabled the Type Object Selection by Path Only option (see Illustrator preferences) ?
    If so, disable it.

  • Design View - Can't Select Text, Only Divs

This is a page I did not build, and I hope I can describe this properly. Here's the published page -
    www.wheeltime.com
I'm in CS4 and there are two things going on when trying to edit in design view. The first is I can't select text of content. Clicking to select said content, say a line of text or a word, selects and highlights the entire div container and all the content within in one big chunk. Why is DW not letting me select the actual content? This is the first time I've enver encountered this issue.
This is the same for all the div ontainers on the page. But another, perhaps related problem, has to do with this content area. In design view, there's a fixed height, so not only can I not select the content, but I can't see it all. It's OK in the browser, expands as it should. I've looked at all the properties anywhere and don't see any height attribute anywhere, especially those that enclose this area of content.
One this that has be wondering - this content area is warpped in a "main-content" div, with a class applied. But this div has no corresponding entry or properties in the style sheet. I can see where a div can be used that has no specific properies of it's own, but is it OK to not be mentioned at all in the style sheet? And can this affect what's going on in design view editing?
So, I guess the question is - what is governing this inability to edit in Design view?  Thank you in advance!!

Have you tried double clicking the content?
I'm not sure what causes this exactly, but I downloaded your page and ran it in my DWCS4. It did the same thing until I double clicked the content of the divs. That allowed me to select it without issue from that point on.
It may have something to do with the content being wrapped in <span> tags within each <div>.
Onto your other question, your <div id="main-container"class="container"> is being affected by the .container class in your style.css file rather than a #main-container id.
EDIT: HTML id's like <div id="main-content"> serve to identify elements for many purposes, not just css. There is no problem with giving an element an id simply for organizational purposes, though usually they are used as targets for javascripts, css or php scripting purposes.

  • Is there a way to automatically resize the text box to fit the text inside, without using the selection tool to resize the corners in Illustrator and Photoshop?

I'm wondering if there is a way where I can quickly resize a text box to fit exactly around the text inside, so pretty much the smallest the text box can go without being too small to fit the text? I know you can do this manually with the selection tool, but is there a button/command that automatically does this in one go?
    Thanks

Try this script. Save the page as .jsx the the "Presets>Scripts" AI folder. When you restart AI it will appear in the "Scripts" menu. Select the text block and run the script.
Thanks to Nathaniel Vaughn KELSO for the script.

  • Trouble selecting and moving objects near text in Adobe Illustrator? Try this.

It's been 4 years since I left Corel DRAW for Adobe Illustrator. One thing I could never get used to is the crazy way text has an impenetrable invisible sheet over it making it hard to select objects near or behind it.
With Corel DRAW I was used to be able to select text by simply clicking on the visible area of the text. Selecting stuff behind the text by clicking between letters or right next to a decender was never a problem. But Illustrator is a different story.
Tonight I finally found a way to make selecting text in Illustrator behave more like Corel DRAW.
    I wrote it up here: http://www.johnstanowski.com/blog/trouble-selecting-and-moving-objects-near-text-in-adobe- illustrator-try-this/
    Just thought I'd share!

It's not spam, but thanks for assuming.
I was up really late writing that blog post. Posting a link was the quickest way to share and be able to go to bed.
Plus it's rather lengthy. I thought that would be rude to use an Adobe forum for my articles.
If you saw my blog you will have seen there's not much going on there at all, and no calls to action to hire me. I don't have anything to gain by getting traffic.
And, yeah, layers work for selecting, but that slows you down. Who would want to look away from their work to find and select a layer when they're trying to tweak positions of objects? Layers suck for selecting quickly.
And there must be something wrong with me but I find using Type Object Selection by Path Only by itself hard to use. I'd really just like to click on the text itself rather than an invisible hairline you have to probe to find.
Here's the post. I hope people who had trouble like me find it helpful.
Do you have trouble selecting objects near Point Type in Adobe Illustrator? You’ve been there. You want to select an object. Problem is, it’s really close to piece of Point Type. All too often we try to select objects that wind up being unreachable because they lie too close to a piece of Point Type, which we wind up selecting instead. Luckily, after years of angst, I discovered a solution.
Point Type in Adobe Illustrator is funny. There’s this invisible “shield” around it. This shield is much larger (at least it seems that way) than the text itself. It prevents you from selecting objects behind text by clicking between letter and words. This shield is particularly meddlesome with lowercase letters and decenders because we think surely we can click on that blue box (or whatever) because it seems far enough away from that Point Type. But the lowercase “g” in the Point Type’s territory.
Okay, now that we know we’re talking about the same thing, let’s move on to the solutions.
Step 1. Check ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ in Preferences
You’ll find this option in Preferences/Type. Click it and that nasty text shield goes away. But there’s a price to pay. With this option activated, the only way you can select your text is by clicking on the text path, a super, tiny, thin baseline thingy under all the letters, but above decenders. It’s really hard to grab. To do it right you need to slowly approach the text path with your cursor. When you’re right over it, Illustrator will let you know by adding a small black square to your cursor. Now, you can click, hold and move your text. But this workflow can really slow you down and break your rhythm, maybe even more so with it turned off.
Step 2. Add the ‘Outline Object’ Effect
Select your Point Type and, from under the Effects Menu/Path/, select Outline Object. This effect does something really sweet to text in Illustrator: it lets your Point Type objects be treated as if their were converted to Outlines. You can still edit the text, but as far as selecting it, Illustrator now considers it outlines and shapes instead of a text object. Basically, it now considers the Path of the text to be the text itself! Now, since we’ve already checked ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ we can now click on the text to select it. Just the text. Not the baseline, not the wacky invisible shield surrounding it.
And now… you can select things behind the text by clicking between words and letters. And the ONLY way to select Point Type is to click on the visible parts of the text itself! Problem solved.
    Potential Problem:
Too much of a good thing could be a bad thing. Let’s say you have some Point Type set in a very light face and it’s pretty small or you’re zoomed way out. Selecting that text could be a problem since you have to actually click on the text itself. Actually it isn’t that hard, it may just require an extra click to grab it. If you have a set of smaller, light-faced bits of text, you can elect to just not apply the Outline Object effect to these. They’ll get their ‘shield’ back and be easier to click on. And since they’re so small, they don’t pose a problem with selecting things behind them anyway.
Applying this technique to your old files
Now that you’ve learned this awesome new way to work around type in Illustrator, you may be anxious to open yesterday’s project and get back to work. But you may be not be looking forward to applying the Outline Object effect to each and every piece of type. For this you can use Illustrator’s “Select Same” feature. Select one piece of text. Then from the Select Menu click on Object/Text Objects. Now ALL of your text objects will be selected, and you can apply the Outline Object effect to all of them at once!
That’s it. If you build ads or work with a lot of type in Illustrator, you’re about to be able to work a lot faster… and happier.

  • Selecting textframe and text inside with 3 clicks

This was possible in InDesign-Versions previous to InDesign CC. Now, if I double-click a textframe i have to wait 1 second, then i'm able to select text with another double click.
That is very annoying and disturbs my working process. Is someone else facing this issue?
The answer from the Adobe LiveChat-Support was "we have something changed" and questions in the kind of "First: Have you already turned your machine on?".
Friendly as they are the gave me an mysterious adress to a cave somewhere in US, where I can dig for further answers. Fine.

Sorry, that is not my point, changing settings as you propose doesn't solve my problem.
This triple click is meant if the cursor is already blinking in the selected textframe.
@Peter Spier: I change nothing in my prefs. Thats how it works since I installed InDesign CC without any changes.
No matter how often I click once - InDesign CC does not select text. I have to wait one second and then I have to double click, or triple click to select a word or a line.
I older versions it was possible just to click three times and text was selected - without switchen first to the text-tool.
I work very fast on an InDesign-Document, often image-frames and text-frames step by step. So it slows me down if I have to wait one second so I'm able to select text...
I try this explanation, so you can reproduce the error:
    1. create a text frame and enter some text
    2. Switch from text-tool to the selection-tool (Key "V" or Escape-Key)
    3. Click several times (i mean 10 times and more) fast on a word in the textframe. You will see that in InDesign CC no text will be selected. You have to wait 1 second, then the text-tool will be activated and then you are able to select text. I previous InDesign versions after 3 clicks there was text selected - without selecting first the text-tool.
Understand my problem? In a fast workflow it is unacceptable to wait 1 second because of a UI-Bug...

  • Placing text inside curved shape

i am having bit trouble placing the text inside this custom shape (i used custom shape tool)

It's easier to apply the flag warp to both the Type and Shape layers at the same time, so start with your text, and create the shape layer below it.  Select both layers, and right click and choose Convert to Smart Object.  Then Free Transform > Warp

  • Microsoft word 2004 changes whole document instead of just selected text

I'm using MacBook Pro 10.5.8. I'm having trouble with microsoft 2004. When I select text from a portion of the document (like a paragraph) to change its property (like make it bold, or shift a block of text over by a tab), the whole document (everythiing else that i did not select) moves. This can happen to 200 pages! It's driving me nuts. It's also doing it to new documents. I have thrown away my preferences file: preferences/com.microsof.Word.plist; and restarted my computer but it keeps happening. I'm trying to finish a huge writing project with deadlines at the end of the week and it's making it really difficult to work. Anyone have any ideas that might help me? Thanks so much!

That's a different matter. And it's not what you said in your OP, so you better make sure that is the actual problem.
I hesitate to ask this, but have you used a single Style throughout the document?
If yes, check its automatic update setting. Click inside the text, go to Format > Style > Modify and check if the "Automatically update" option is enabled. (I'm not using Word 2004, so these may not be exactly as described.)
If no, then probably the document is corrupt.
(Note that this is based on your description -- it that's not accurate, then neither is my answer.)

  • How can I make rectangular speech bubbles that adapt to the text inside them without the "arrow" that points towards where the bubble is coming from getting changed?

I have to make lots of speech bubbles (150+) that all have texts inside them which differ in length. I want the speech bubbles to look the same in terms of style, but I need different sizes of course for each text. This means that the rectangular part of the speech bubble should adapt in length and width to the text inside it, while the "arrow" pointing towards where the bubble is coming from (e.g. the person who speaks) should stay the same on every bubble. So is there a way or a workaround to make such "adapting" speech bubbles?
I appreciate any kinds of help
    Thanks in advance!

    Here's another way I found:
    1. Draw a speech bubble. Mine is a rectangle with rounded corners and a triangular pointer added with Pathfinder > Add
    2. Drag out a frame the same size as the speech bubble. Select the speech bubble and Copy; then select the empty frame and choose Edit > Paste Into...
    3. Alt-Drag the frame with the pasted speech bubble to make a copy, then crop one copy to leave only the top of the bubble showing, and crop the other copy to leave only the bottom.
    4. Drag out a text frame and insert a table consisting of 1 column, 3 rows. Set the text frame to Autosize > Height Only.
    5. Set the stroke/fill of the top and bottom rows to none, and style the middle row to match the speech bubble, (in my case a white fill and 2pt stroke; left and right).
    6. Anchor (paste) a copy of the speech bubble top in the top table row, and a copy of the speech bubble bottom in the bottom row.
Getting the 3 parts to match up with is where you just have to work on it until you get it right. Use the positioning tools in Anchored Object options and the column width setting in Cell options to line everything up.
Enter your text in the middle row. (Hey, look at that...a valid application of Comic Sans!) With the Cell Height set to an "At Least" setting, the cell will expand to fit whatever text you enter, pushing the the bottom row down, with the text frame auto-sizing to keep everything in play...

  • How do you find and replace "within selected text" in a textedit document (version 1.8, mountain lion)

In the textedit version on Snow leopard it was possible to search and replace within a peice of selected text only i.e. not the entire file. This was a very useful feature because you could select a paragraph and replace all occurences of word1 with word2 within that paragraph only! This feature appears to be missing from the mountain lion version of textedit (version 1.8). Or can anyone tell me how to do it ... ?

Having 46 people view a post without replying is not unusual. Some people look at a question to see if it's something they'd like to know the answer to, and then come back  when it has eventually been answered.
I'm not sure if you need to escape forward slashes in Dreamweaver's Find and Replace dialog box, but I normally do because both JavaScript and PHP normally use forward slashes as delimiters to mark the beginning and end of the regex like this:
    var pattern = /[A-Z]{4}/; // JavaScript
    $pattern = '/[A-Z]{4}/';   // PHP
When a forward slash appears inside the regex, you need to escape it with a backslash to avoid confusion with the closing delimiter.
As you have worked out, a capturing group is created by wrapping part of the regex in parentheses.
If you want to match exactly 38 characters, you can use [\S\s]{38}. That includes spaces, newline characters, symbols, everything.
If you're trying to find everything between two tags, you can do this:
    (<\/tag_name>)([^<]+)
The closing tag is captured as $1 and everything up to the next opening tag is captured as $2.
Learning regular expressions is not easy. I don't claim to be an expert, but I enjoy the challenge of trying to solve them. If you're interested in regular expressions, there are several books published by O'Reilly. "Mastering Regular Expressions" is the ultimate authority, but it's a difficult read (not because it's badly written, but because of the complexity of the subject). "Regular Expressions Cookbook" is very good. There's also a new "Introducing Regular Expressions", but I haven't read it.
