Trouble setting up a home network

Hi,
I have the Actiontec M1424-WR router.  I am trying to set up a home network with a Desktop on XP and a Laptop on Vista.
I have been able to creat a network if the Desktop and Laptop are both connected to the Router with Cat5 Cables.
I can not set up a network if I have the Desktop connected via the Cat5 and the Laptop using the Wireless Card.
I've called VZ, won't help.  I've emailed Actiontec, couldn't help.  I've Googled etc.  I'm stumped!  This can't be a unique situation.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Log on to the computer.
Click the Start button ‌, and then click Connect To.
Choose the wireless network from the list that appears, and then click Connect.
Type the security key (which is the WEP key stamped on the Routers tag) and then click OK.
You will see a confirmation message when you are connected to the network.
To confirm that you added the computer, do the following:
Open Network by clicking the Start button and then clicking Network.
You should see the icons for the computer you added and for the other computers and devices that are part of the network.
Side note:It’s important to use the same workgroup name for all of the computers on your network. This makes it possible for computers running different versions of Windows to detect and access each other. Remember that the default workgroup name is not the same in all versions of Windows.

    I have a WRT54G boardband wireless g router. I have two computers connected to the internet through my router with no problems, been working great for months. I have Vista on both of my computers. I am trying to connect both of my computers through a network so I can shared files. I can't get this to work. I am not using the wireless router, I was told I could do it the way that I have it setup where both are connected through the router. If I need any additional hardware what would you recommend?     I want to set up a home network to be able to watch my movies and litsen to music across multiple platforms.  I have movies purchased from itunes as well as movies from my DVD collection that i converted to an .m4v format.  I currently have these movies stored on an external harddrive. To watch a movie on my apple tv I have to ensure my external hard drive is connected to my macbook pro, then play the movie on my macbook pro and "mirror" it to my apple tv.
    Ideally I would like to be able to watch movies from my collection without having to have my laptop on and work from that.  Is it possible to navigate my collection from my Apple TV and play it on my Apple TV.  My macbook pro is the machine I primarily use for work and school it is quite the protological nuissance to have to hook all that up everytime I want to watch a movie.
    My thoughts are that I could take my old dekstop pc, attach an external hard drive to that and make that my "media storage".  If I were to do that would I then be able to watch movies as well as select which movie I want to watch from my library through my apple TV without my macbook pro being in the equation?  Or if I should desire to watch a movie from my library through my Macbook Pro, Iphone 4s, and ipad is that possible?  I basically want to set up my library to be accessible from any of my devices.
    My devices are; the previously mentioned Apple Tv, macbook pro, iphone 4s, ipad 3. I also have a desktop PC running windows 7, xbox 360 and playstation 3 (the xbox and PS3 would be nice if they could too but wouldnt break my heart as they are my roommate's and not mine so I rarely use them.)
    Thank you for any help/advice you guys may have!

    and NAS's which say they can work as itunes libs don't work

  • Setting up a home network: AirPort Extreme & AiPort Express

    I'd like to setup my home network with both my new Aiport Extreme and my existing AirPort Express.
    Ideally, the setup would be as follows:
    Ethernet Network Connection + External HD via USB --> AirPort Extreme
    Home Speakers --> AirPort Express
    I know that I want my Extreme to act at the main, then the Express to operate on the same network as a relay or remote. I've tried to follow all of the online support documentation to manually configure a WPA. No matter what configuration I use, I run into trouble.
    Any advice?

    From your post, I assume you have the new square 802.11n Extreme. Download the Airport Utility (it is not the same as the Airport Admin Utility) from the disk that was provided with the Extreme. It is a little round icon with a blue Airport Symbol in the center and is below Airport Admin Utility in your Utilities Folder. You may have to do a factory reset on the Extreme and I know you're going to have to do one on the Express.
    Set your system up on the Extreme first after factory reset. Choose the type of security you wish to use. Call the system something different than your original system like putting use "New" before the system name. You can't carry forward either system names or passwords to the new system. Then when you set the password for security I'd use something different than the original password.
    Once your system is built, do a factory reset on the Express by using a paper clip or ballpoint pen. Unplug the Express, push in on the reset button with the paper clip or pen point. The while still depressing the reset button, plug the Express back into the outlet. You'll get a few quick green light flashes, then several rapid blinking amber lights. Wait until the amber light stops blinking then you can stop depressing the reset button. It takes a few minutes for the Express to come on line.
    Go to the Airport Utility and you should see your Extreme as the base station and then the Express will come up with the factory ID.
    Configure from there.

  • Set up a Home Network? How do I do it & should I merge my accounts?

    Hi Folks - this is my first post and its quite long, so please bear with me as I give you a bit of history of my problem.
    I bought a iMac and hooked it up to a Seagate 500GB hard disk using Time Machine in my study and connect to my ISP via WiFi using a standard router. I then set up two user accounts - one for me & one for my wife and sync'd them both to our MobileMe accounts.
    Later I bought a Mac mini to use as a media centre in my lounge. It hooks into my HD TV through the mini-DVI port and I have a Elgato Eye hooked up via a USB port that links up to my Sky HD+ satellite box via a S-Video cable and AV component leads. I'm using a Mighty Mouse and an Apple Bluetooth keyboard via bluetooth. It has no external back-up hard disk and Time Machine is not set-up.
    When I set the Mac mini up, I wasn't quite sure what was the best way to set it up, but I used the Apple Set-up function to copy files & settings over WiFi from the iMac to the Mac mini for both user accounts. So I ended up with a compete copy of my iMac desktop/settings/files on my Mac mini with both accounts set-up with access to our MobileMe accounts.
    I wanted to change the layout of my dock on the Mac mini to remove some Apps (iWorks & MS Office). When I then subsequently logged into my iMac, the dock there was now different ie. the same as the Mac mini. So in order to keep my iMac dock different from my Mac mini dock, I changed the user account names on the Mac mini to a new naming convention 'Name - Mac mini'.
    I only wanted my media files on the Mac mini and all my other docs (spreadsheets, word processing etc) on the iMac, the idea being the iMac becomes a workstation and the Mac mini the media centre.
    So I deleted the relevant files off each mac. I then set-up network file sharing on both and can log into either via Finder to be able to get access to retrieve/access any files I need from either Mac - but this only works if both are on. Now I'm not so sure this is the best set-up.
    I've now started to fill up my Mac mini hard drive and I thought I would add some more storage and it would be great if I could back up both the iMac and Mac mini via Time Machine to a hard drive. A friend suggested using NAS storage for this as he does that with his iMac & Apple TV.
    So here's my two-part dilemma (appreciate your patience so far)....
    Dilemma No. 1: - What should I do for my storage solution?
    I can see the advantage of moving all my media & documents to the one shared network and being able to access them no matter what Mac I am using without the other having to be turning the other one on.
    I'm considering buying something like a Buffalo Linkstation NAS and connecting to the Mac mini via ethernet.
    Dilemma No. 2: - What should I do with my multiple accounts? Merge or keep separate?
    I get a little fed-up having to go downstairs and switch on the Mac mini to watch a TV show if I am upstairs on the iMac or if we are in the lounge browsing the web and want a file from the desktop iMac I have to run upstairs and switch that on.
    I know I could leave them both on sleep mode but I do like to turn them off now and again.
    I fI go for a NAS solution, should I keep the accounts separate?
    What's the best solution for both my dilemmas and are they interlinked? As an aside, I know very little about home-networking and what equipment I would need and how I would go about setting it up.
    Any help you can give [if you're still awake after reading this ] would be most appreciated.

    I personally suggest the new Drobo FS. Since it has an iTunes server built in and you can use any size sata hard drive in it it is better and a NAS that has to use the same size drives.

  • Having trouble printing over a home network to a Canon S9000 from iMac

    Hello there,
    I recently bought a iMac and am having trouble printing to my Canon S9000 over my home network. If I hook up the printer to the iMac I can print to it, but the PC that is also hooked up to the network can't. If the printer is hooked up to the PC, the PC can print to it, but the iMac can not.
    I downloaded the S9000 driver from Canon and installed it on the iMac. Then brought up the printer in system preferences. I found my printer OK, but I can't seem to find the S9000 driver in the list.
    When the printer is hooked up to the PC and I try to print to it from the iMac this is the error I get: "Error Number : 311 Printer is in use or an error has occurred. If an error has occurred, eliminate the cause of the error."

    Your problem is due to the way that Canon wrote the drivers for that printer. It can be shared to Windows machines if it is on a Windows machine, or to Macs if it is on a Mac. It can't be shared cross-platform. It is not supported by GutenPrint, so there is no CUPS system driver available; if there was, you could put it on the Windows machine and share it, and use the CUPS driver to print on your Mac.
    I'm sorry, but that printer will not ever be able to be shared cross-platform unless and until Canon rewrites the drivers. I'd not recommend holding your breath while waiting.
    The best solution to cross-platform printing is to get a network printer. Many vendors, including Brother, Canon, Epson, and HP, make them, some of them at fairly low (under $100) prices.

  • Setting up a home network

    I have an IMAC running tiger and a macbook running Leopard.
    I wnat to purchase a NAS (possibly a mini Stack) so that files can be shared so it doesn't matter what computer my kids get on they'll have access to their files, music, email, etc. I'm concerned about setting up the NAS so each of their accounts can be accessed.
    Also, on my office network I can syncronize my laptop with our server so I still have access to my files even if I'm not on the network. I'd like to have this same capability on my home network if possible.
    Any help with a home network set up (Ideas, books, websites, etc.) is greatly appreciated

    This could cause problems, different versions of the same app, one Tiger and one Leopard, overwriting preference files or using different versions of the (iTunes/iPhoto) library/index file that won't reflect changes in the other version...sorry I don't have a suggestion for how to deal with that other than to upgrade both machines to the same OS version and apps, if possible.
    Also, how old is the iMac, is this an older G3, G4, or G5 iMac? Then you also have to worry about which apps are PPC only, Intel only, or Universal apps.

  • Setting up a home network using the new USB551L modem

    I have recently switched from the 3G USB760 modem to the new 4G LTE USB511L modem. Since I live in a very rural area, it is one of the few internet options that I have and I am forced to use it for my home. I previously set up a wireless network using the previous modem by connecting a wireless router to my computer by ethernet cord. I then went under the properties of the connection in order to allow other computers/devices to use the connection. Since switching to the new USB modem, the network does not appear under the list of options when using the Windows 7 network connections icon in the lower right corner of the screen. I am trying to set up a similar wireless network for my house but I am having difficulty. It seems that everything will connect to the wireless router but the router is lacking internet connection. Any advice is appreciated.

  • Trouble adding G4 to home network

    Not sure if this is the apropriate place to post this. Let me know if it is not. I have a home network set up with a Linksys router that is connected by ethernet cable to a Dell PC. It is WEP encrypted.
    My problem is that when I type the WEP key into the airport connecting to a network window, it says there was an error connecting to the nework. I cannot figure out how to add the G4 to my home network.
    Any advice you might have on where to look (or where would be a better place to post this) would be appreciated.

    Hello Martha Craig. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    First, I would recommend that you switch to WPA or WPA2 over WEP, as WEP is no longer considered secure. However, if you must use WEP, then I suggest that you use a 26-character HEX key for compatibility in mixed (PC/Mac) environments.
    One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
    In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.

    I just set up a new computer and for the first time in a very long time I'm using the Linksys router we've had because we have more people in our house now than before. So I have wireless internet all set up on our laptops and I have an ethernet cord running to my desktop. I want to set up a wireless network so that I can have a shared folder that all the computers can access and I want all the computers to be able to remotely connect to each others music. My laptop (wireless) seems to be able to connect to both my desktop and my GF's laptop remotely to access their shared folders and my desktop's music. My desktop on the other hand is having trouble. It seems like it connect to my GF's laptop and access her shared folders but it can't connect to my laptop... would I be able to get a basic rundown of all that I would need to change/set so that everything is accessible and good? Mainly just the shared folder among everyone would be cool but the music would be a benefit.

    Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
    the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
    router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
    cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
    to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
    in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!

  • Trouble setting up my Wireless network

    I have just purchased a Wireless-N Broadband router WRT300N and trying to set up a wireless home network.  My ISP provided a Dynalink RTA1320 modem and uses internet configuration type “PPPoA”.      PPPoE sounds close but this didn't work for me.  When I try to open an internat page I get “This page cannot be displayed" The network appears connected and when I run ipconfig  the IP address, Subnet and Gateway are all listed.   I thought it might be password issue.  I tested my isp account user name and password and they work.   When I connect as admin to 192.168.1.1 with only my modem I use a different password from the one I use when I connect to the same from the router.   Does that matter?   Yes I am a wireless novice.   Any suggestions?

    It doesn't matter too much - the only issue is from a restore point of view - what will you lose if the server creams in? From that perspective, it probably makes sense to have the OS on one drive and the 'shared area' (if that's what you're going to do) on the other drive. If that's the case, perhaps consider dumping everyone's songs onto a sharepoint and setting that as the iTunes storage location for each user's iTunes. Alternatively, with iTunes 9 you can now share music libraries between multiple computers (providing they're all using the same Apple ID). Of course that throws up iPod/iPhone syncing problems, so keep it all in mind.
    Furthermore (I think you've already mentioned this), see what you can put on the shared area instead of in users Documents folder. For example, if one of them has a load of family photos - put them all on the shared area. Stuff you don't want the kids to have access to (financial documentation etc) can still be put on the shared area, but can be protected with user account-based permissions (this is where server OS's and networked user accounts really come into their own), or just leave within one user account.
    And for goodness sake, especially if you have things you don't want the kids to have access to, don't let the main server account be the one that the kids use to log on to the server for every-day purposes, since they will then have access to everything (since the main admin account on any mac is by default 'root', which means it is the account which is allowed to do absolutely anything to an OS, including changing permissions etc etc)

    I want to setup my home network with my devices and I would like to know the best setup possible.
    I have to configure:
    1X 2TB Time Capsule
    1X Airport Extreme
    2X Aiport Express
    The 2 Express are for speakers in differant rooms.
    I can not link any with ethernet cables. Unfortunately.
    It has to be wireless.
    How I did set it up before was the TC was the master hooked up to the modem and all the other were setup as extende wireless network.
    The result was not very good. Often I have cut and dops form my laptop and with the remote app.
    How would you recommande to set it up?

    I can not link any with ethernet cables. Unfortunately.
    Have you ruled out powerline adapters? They can sometimes work pretty well, bridging distances that wireless can't.

    The signal from wireless access points can cover 2 floors, maybe 3, depending on the material of the building. But if I had that setup, I'd have a wireless router on the floor where the modem is and an access point per floor and user an N one where the gaming devices are located. I prefer a wired connection for the access points but wireless in repeater mode is ok too.
    The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • Trouble setting up 3 computer network

    Hi All,
    I just purchased A Linksys WRT54G V6.0. I currently have 2 desktop computers hardwired to the router and a laptop connected wirelessly. My problem is that while all 3 can connect to the internet fine, only computer A can connect to the other 2 computers. Let me elaborate. Assume the desktop systems are computers A and B and the laptop is C. When hardwired all three get along fine and files can be shared perfectly. When I disconnect the laptop (C) and rely on the wireless connection, the trouble starts.
    A sees both B and C
    B sees only A
    C sees only A.
    All three still connect to the net fine.
    Computer A runs XP Pro, B runs XP home and C runs XP Media Edition.
    Computers A and B were hardwired through a wired router for the past 2 years with no issues. Computer C was recently acquired and the need was felt for a wireless connection for the laptop.
    Any suggestions?

    Do you have "File and Printer Sharing" set up for your wireless adapter?
    On your laptop computer, in Windows, go to:
    Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections
    Then right click on your wireless card and select "Properties"
    On the "General" tab, look for "This connection uses the following items:"
    Make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" has a check in the box.  You may also need to check "Client for Microsoft Networks", but I am uncertain about that.  Then click on "OK".  Reboot the computer.  Then test again.
