Trouble using iphoto on external drive

Hi,
I have an i photo library on a WD My Passport external drive and am having trouble getting photos off of the drive. When I select he photos I'd like to export, where I 'd like them to go, and hit okay, I get an error message that says: Unable to create/... what can I do to get photos of the drive?
any thoughts?
thanks

Couple of questions:
What format is the external drive?
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:

That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library?  I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's?  I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.

Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss?  In the iPhoto Library?  Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"?  Quality?  Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type?  Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply...

  • I have an iPod G2 with a firewire 400 lead. how can I attach it to my new 13 inch Mac book Pro, is there a 400 to 800 firewire converter. USB lead wont work with the Macbook Pro. iPod used as an external drive to archive memory cards on the go.

My G2 iPod that I use as an external drive to archive memory cards on the go cannot link with my new 13" Macbook Pro cause it uses a firewire 400 lead. It will not work with a USB lead. Is there a firewire 800 ipod lead or converter available? Can any one shed some light on this please?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

  • Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup my Mac Mini (256gbSSD + 2tbHDD)?

Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup what I have on my Mac Mini?
My Mac Mini has one 256 SSD and one 2tb HDD. I want to use Time Machine to do a backup of everything.
Would an external 2tb My Passport Drive by Western Digital work for the backup?
It seems like it would not work because the total storage on the Mac Mini is 2304 gigabytes (SSD + HDD).
And the external Western Digital drive is only 2048 in gigabytes versus 2304 gigabytes the Mac Mini has.

No. A Time Machine backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. You would need at least a 4 TB backup drive for Time Machine.
Might I suggest as an alternative that you not use Time Machine but a third-party backup utility that simply overwrites older files with new ones such that the backup drive can be the same capacity as the drive backed up.

  • I recently purchased a new iMac with an external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  Comments?  Help?

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • Using only an External Drive

I bought an iomega external drive to hold my 900CD library on (160GB) so I would not use space on the internal drive. The problem is I keep ripping CD's and they keep going to the internal drive. Can anyone tell me how to use only the external drive for itunes and my ipod(30GB)?

See this link from MacMuse, follow his instructions EXACTLY & you should be good to go. Just think, once you get the EHD up & running, no more worries about losing your music due to a computer crash. The other thing I would recommend is a secondary backup such as burning data CD's or DVD's which is what I do. I only burn about once or twice a month now, but this is just extra insurance in case the EHD takes a hike for some reason.
    MacMuse, "Computer Crashed" #4, 11:49pm Feb 7, 2005
    EDIT:
I forgot, the one thing that was suggested to me when I put my EHD in is to regularly send backups of the .itl & .xml files which are the database files for your library, playlists, etc. to your EHD. I send copies of these 2 files to the EHD any time I add music, change playlists, etc. DO NOT MOVE the original files off your main HD, that is there "home." If you should happen to have bad luck & have a crash with these 2 files backed up, along with the iTunes music folder, you should be able to get iTunes up & running in a "jiffy".

  • How do I save albums, events in tact from iPhoto to external drive to comply with iCloud limits? Thx

How do I save albums, events in tact from iPhoto to external drive to comply with iClouds limits? (iMac Lion, need to remove 280gb of photos>

Not sure if I understand correctly?
Do you want to move 280 GB of photos from iPhoto on your Mac to an external hard drive?
If that is the case, iCloud has nothing to do with it. You can move your iPhoto library to an external drive to free up space on your internal drive.

If that is not what you're trying to do, please rephrase your question. Thanks.

  • Why is my iTunes so slow when used on an external drive

I have an late 2006 iMac Intel 2.0GHz w/ 512mb ram, Model MA200LL. It has a 250GB HD. 13.4GB of used space on the internal HD. The problem has occurred when it had Tiger and has persisted through Leopard 10.5.2.
I have 125GB of music on a Seagate Free Agent 250GB external hard drive. When I try to delete a song it takes 87 seconds to delete. When I scroll through the 22,222 songs I get a spinning wheel for 10 - 15 seconds. Switching songs works very good.
I used the same external drive on my Mac Pro (2.66GHz - 1GB Ram) and when I try the same actions it works instantly.
The same issues arises when I used a 500GB WD World Book external hard drive.
I have run Onyx which reported no problems with the internal hard drive.
Should I expect to delete files quicker on the iMac in iTunes? If there is a problem, what can I do so that I get iTunes to perform better using an external drive?
    Thank you.

One thing that you can do in general to help overall performance is upgrade your RAM. The late 2006 iMacs should be able to take up to 3GB of RAM(some people install 4GB anyway) but even going up to 2GB should help your system a lot. Besides RAM is cheap these days: http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=288&type=Memory&TI=3454&shoup grds=Show+Upgrades
The Free Agent drives are USB only so for one thing USB will be slower than your internal drive by at least half, however it still shouldn't take 10-15 seconds to access unless something else is going on. What version of iTunes do you have? Did you try Repairing the Disk Permissions and Verifying your internal drive? Try resetting the SMC and see if that helps: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Should I expect to delete files quicker on the iMac in iTunes? If there is a
problem, what can I do so that I get iTunes to perform better using an external
    drive?
Yes. The internal drive inside your iMac has read/write speeds somewhere between 55-65MB/sec while your USB will max out at about 30MB/sec. This may not fix your problem but just as recommendation, next time purchase an external drive that has a Firewire connection. Firewire 400 maxes out at about 40MB/sec but overall performance is usually better than USB 2.0.

  • Having trouble exporting photos from iPhoto to external drive.

I am having trouble copying files to my external drive.  It is a shared external drive connected through my wireless router.  I can copy some photo's to the externaldrive folder and they transfer no problem and some of the photo's from the same folder appear to be transfering but as soon as the copying window goes away so does the photo's from the folder I was putting them to.  New to apple so I am still learning the in's and out's and I am sure it's probably something easy.  Any help would be appreciated.  The external drive I was using on a PC before and the Mac seems to see most everything so not sure if that matters or not.  Pic and video's came from same camera on the same day.

is there anyway to transfer direct to the hard-drive?
What does that mean? Do you mean have your Library on an external drive? Yes, that's easy.
I have a network HDD connected to my router
    Two issues here.
    1. That NAS is not an appropriate disk for an  iPhoto Library -  iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Later versions simply won't allow the Library on such devices.
    2. Router? Wireless connection?  A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
    To move an  iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Moved iphoto to external drive and now can't find it.

I backed up iphoto library on Apple TV and External Hard Drive. Confirmed they transferred and then deleted the file on computer. When I try to run iphoto, it opens a screen that asks me which library I want to use. I can't find the library on my external drive or apple TV drive. Though I can see every picture on my TV. I think I messed this up big time and trying to recover the pictures of my kids. Any help would be appreciated. Clearly I am not computer smart.

1 - in the future never delete a file until you have fully tested the backup you made
2 - depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the :select Library" option and you should see all available libraries
Report back exactly what happens and what you see if it does not solve your issue

  • How do I import ( copy) iPhotos from External Drive that contains the iPhoto library photos.

My old hard drive was failing and with the help of an Apple Consultant, I made a new library ( on external hard drive)  and copied all the photo files off the iMac's internal drive to the external drive. Then the iphoto library was deleted from the hard drive and the internal  hard drive was replaced.
Photo Storage is the name of the external drive as it is designated for photos only. Lightroom recognises the drive but does not see any of the photos. It says no photos available? Is there something I am missing.

Import is just a word for copying photos from the phone to a computer and not that different than what I do in Windows -- although I haven't compared the speed on a large number of photos. If you are importing and using iPhoto, you might try doing it with Image Capture which will allow you to copy them directly to an external drive. It may be faster than doing it to iPhoto but I haven't compared the speed. Instructions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 are shown below.
Connect the iOS device to the computer.
If Image Capture does not open automatically, you can navigate to your Applications folder and open Image Capture from there.
Choose the location to which you'd like to import pictures.
    Click Options.
Click the Options tab if it isn't already selected.
Enable the option "Delete items from camera after downloading".
Note: Deleting photos after importing helps to reduce Camera Roll size, and it improves backup and restore times. You may choose Keep Photos if you wish to import the photos to additional computers.
    Click OK.
    Click Download All.

  • Time Machine, iPhoto and External Drives

    Hi!
    My Mac Info:
Macbook Pro Retina OS X, Version 10.8.5, Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 8GB
    I have 0KB out of 120.47GB.
    Audio - 2.33GB
    Movies - 37.12GB
    Photos - 28.66GB
    Apps - 6.98GB
    Backups - 0KB
    Other - 45.38GB
    Ok...the scenario, let's say...
I backed up in Jan '14 on Time Machine on a G/Drive 1GB. (got it.)
In Feb '14, I ran out of space on my Mac, so I deleted photos to make room and did another backup, photos and everything. (got it.)
In Mar '14, I backed up again.
    Question 1.
In the Mar '14, back up, it only backed up the photos from my iPhoto library that were current, it did not back up the deleted photos.
So how do I see a complete photo library? The deleted photos and everything on my G/Drive? This scenario was fictitious, however I'm in a situation where I've been deleting photos in iPhoto and backing up to make space since Dec 2012. I don't know  how retrieve a true library that has everything! (The photos that I have deleted, btw, have not been duplicates.)
Oh, the reason, why I want a complete photo library is because I want to externally print a album of our 3 yr old son. But when I go to the back ups, I can't tell which files have still have the photos that I deleted. So, how can I piece together all of the photo libraries for 1 comprehensive library without showing duplicates?
    Question 2.
    My external drives
    G/Drive, S/N 7DGVE8MA - 1TB (I use this for Time Machine).I have used 295GB
WD My Book, WD P/N WD5000h1Q-00 - 500GB, (Backup to my G/Drive).I have used 45GB
    Are these good external drives?
    Many, many thanks!

Your profile shows 10.6.8 - you might want to update it.
If you are backing up using Time Machine, do you have a backup prior to when you started deleting photos that you could restore?
There seem to be multiple problems with WD drives in the discussions, but whether WD is a bad brand is hard to say.

  • How do I move photos from iPhoto to external drive as jpegs (iphoto 7.1.5)

I'm running out of space on my mac so wanted to move all my photos to an external drive. When I export my iphoto library though, they're not saved as individual jpeg files, which is what I want. I basically want to be able to plug the drive into any USB port and see my photos.
    Please help me!
You used to be able to find the folders and drag and drop... I can't seem to do this anymore...?!

If you want to move your iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you want to simply export your photos, that's what the File -> Export command is for.

  • Iphoto and external drives

what is the best way to split my iphoto library and save some of it to an external harddrive?  Will Iphoto LIbary Manager handle that for me, meaning allowing me to offload some of my photos from the iPhoto library to the external drive and then bring them back in, etc.?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
