True to Subject or Art?
Hello Everyone, I just wanted to get the opinions of a diverse group of photographers whose opinion I respect. ( how about that for an opening suck up? )
Recently, I have had several discussions at local art guild meetings with both photographers and traditional visual artists (Painters, sculptors, etc) regarding the use of digital manipulation in photographs.
Let me preface by stating that this discussion concerns the use of photography as an art form, not photojournalism or for documentary use.
Locally, the consensus seems to be that any manipulation or compositing of images is cheating. My feeling is that the final result is the art and there is no such thing as cheating.
I recently chaired a juried show and the juror stated When looking at digital photographs, I never know if Im being fooled or not.
It seems to me that of the many visual art disciplines, only photographers are charged with being true to the subject. If a Plein Aire painter chooses not to include an objectionable element (trashcan for example) in their paintingthat is fine. Impressionist painters can interpret, abstractionists can interpret, but apparently photographers must not.
Years ago, I would lug around a 4x5 and even occasionally an 8x10 view camera shooting primarily B&W film. Even then, I would manipulate the image using various filters during exposure, pushing or pulling the film processing, then choose paper type and contrast, dodging-burning, Potassium ferricyanide for localized bleaching, etc. This evidently was acceptable. But introduce computers and imaging software and suddenly I am charged with cheating or trying to fool the viewer.
Currently, I find myself shooting various elements digitally, or scrounging through 30 years of negs to find images that I can combine to create an entirely new image. Some are obvious composites, while some are more subtle.
What do you think? Is this cheating or somehow misleading the viewer? If so, where do you personally draw the line? Any discussion would be appreciated.

The Media is the Massage is an interesting concept and perhaps a truth but less profound even if the original mistake was not the intent of the statement which is often the truth as well.
But getting back to what makes it a photograph? My thought this is probably only important when legal or financial situation if you are working with competitions that have restriction as to how much manipulation is allowed then that could be a problem but notice that at one time there could be done for the digital or scanned image and then they wanted to know how much and now they wanted to just no what you did to be reassured you did not change a fiend posing in a composition to that of a celebrity to give it more impact subjectively.
Probably there is little that you can do to a photograph digitally or photomechanically that is different. the debate comes from the fact that it is accessible to everyone now. That i she problem and so now it is not photography because the you can do the same a she in crowd has been doing from time in memorium and so they do not like yu can do what they can do.
You do a lot of manipulation to the photos i have seen you posted and the question will always be there how manipulation is too much when doe it become a photography manipulating images to an illustrator references a photograph!
This is not really a solely technical question it is clearly a question of subjective nature.
When you ask the question about story telling then your work becomes the truth if you made the statement these are telling the facts then it becomes a lie when you say you are truthfully depicting a subject even if you manipulated the image and changed in parts of it them it is a photograph that has been retouched but represents the truth.
Now a blanked statement that someone is telling a story and there fore it is still a photograph is true but under certain circumstances it means, "what do you mean by Photograph?"
Both sides are valid.
In a museum if you look at many paintings for instance they make a clear distinction that paint is not the media.

Exporting Flash vector art for print
I would like to export art created in Flash as a vector
format for print. Exporting as either AI or EPS from Flash seems to
have many limitations: no support for masks, alpha transparency, or
editable text with fonts embedded. Has anyone found a workflow to
create print-ready vector art using Flash?
I have tried many combinations of Flash, Freehand, and
Illustrator with no success. (Freehand will open SWF files, but it
rasterizes the vector art when exporting as either EPS or PDF).
Working in Flash Pro 8, but from the Flash CS3 documentation
it doesn't look like there are additional options for file export.
Is it true that any vector art exported from Flash loses font info,
masking, and transparency?Has anyone found a good solution for this? I need to export character art from Flash to use for print and consumer product items. Qualtity vectors are required.
The "best" solution I've found so far is to "Print" as either a .PDF or .PS file, then open that file in Illustrator. It expands all the gradients, and creates very complex vectors, but it's better than the standard export to .AI function, which gives offending operator "bg" errors. Still, it is a sub-par result, and I end up having to recreate art anyway.
(I'm using Flash CS4.)
Dear Adobe, this should be a no-brainer ... Please introduce a true vector export feature from Flash to Illustrator that generates art we can actually use. -
Jdev 11.1.1.5 R1 How To Get Row Data From ADF Table
Hi everyone,
I have an ADF Table Populated with dummy data (for now). Below the Table there is an InputText field.
What I need to do is have the body of the message show up in the InputText field when the user clicks on a message in the inbox(Table).
I've been trying to figure this out for quite some time now, unsuccessfully of course. Hopefully you guys can help me change that.
I do consider myself a beginner still, so please be as clear and specific as possible.

Like in the Ping Status (section - 1), I'd like all the cell having text "Not Pinging" should be in RED color.
Also I am facing an issue in the (Section - 4). When the value of $Results is not null I am getting the desired output but when the value is null the text ""There were no Replication Errors"" is not getting displayed in
the HTML body. Instead it comes as "*32" (32 is the number of letters in the text).
Please help me in fixing this ....

How to access another resource in Groupwise
Could anyone tell me or direct me to a sample of some code, that shows how to access another resource in Groupwise with VB.
The main goal is to send a appointmentsfrom another resource by accessing this resource that you have authority from own mailaccount
or from an account I have access to.

I don't have time to write code but as I recall you have to PROXY into
the account. There's a proxy method IIRC that returns an Account from
which you can send mail if you were granted rights to do so. -
Extending Resource Catalog: How to create subfolders.
Hi,
we are extending the webcenter spaces application as described in this document:

We have succesfully extended the Resource Catalog for both the Personal Space and the Group Spaces to include a folder with our custom taskflows. Nevertheless we could not achieve to generate (non dynamic) subfolders in order to organize our tasflows based on functionality. I haven't seen if this is possible of not anywhere but we have tried with this and it didn't work.

Many thanks.I'm migrating 10 years of mail from Thunderbird on a dusty Dell to my brand-new Mini. I've got tons of subfolders and filters, and I want to replicate the structure using Mail 3.0.
No matter what I do, I can't seem to add a subfolder to the email accounts I have coming off of different servers (Yahoo, Gmail and 2 on Go Daddy.)
The Mac help advice doesn't work -- I'm just given the options to place a new mailbox "On My Mac" or as an RSS feed.
Any other suggestions? I'd keep T'bird, except that I heard that Mozilla's not going to continue developing it. This problem seems to be unique to Leopard. Or maybe just unique to me. -

In the above code snippet I have added ${portalCommonComponents.contentIdForDetailPage} which will return the Content ID dynamically. The reason why I have used this approcach is that as per the requirment there are lot of detail pages.
Everything is working fine but sometimes it's throwing exception for load cache.
Please suggest is there something wrong with this approach, if so suggest me some alternative solution using single Content Presenter Taskflow to display in multiple pages by assigning content ID dynamically.

Custom button skin with scaleGrid 9 slice image does not appear in Design Mode
So in a custom button skin I have a nine sliced image, and then throw that onto an MXML page. In design view, I cannot get the component to show the image that I've thrown on it. Unless I do a hack on the MXML page by adding the image in it's scaleGrid form to the page somewhere. Then it seems to act as like a preloader for the image so it actually displays. But I don't want to do this hack on every page that uses this component. Is there a work around?

Java Studio Enterprise 8 and mail.jar
I have a problem with the mail.jar file being locked after a method is instantiated that actually sends a message (and invokes the mail.jar, activiation.jar, etc.) This is problematic because I can't redepoy an application from the Java Studio Enterprise 8 IDE to the application server without shutting down and restarting the application server. I have the latest versions as of today (7/26/2006) of the mail.jar and activation.jar archives. I've done everything I can think of to ensure that all references to java objects created as part of the mail send process are nullified and even called the System.gc() method to ask the JVM to clean things up. Still, the mail.jar is locked upon redeploy (I can tell because all other files, classes, web component, etc. are gone from the deploy directory except the mail.jar file, which is locked even from Operating System access.)

return sent;Huhm. Good question. I have done the following to get a good log file trace in case something is there:
1) Stopped the server.
2) Cleared out the server.log file (deleted it).
3) Started the server.
4) Deployed the application.
5) Ran the application code such that it sends an e-mail using the Transport.send(message) code.
6) Tried to redeploy the application (which won't because the mail.jar file is locked up).

thanksHello. I don't know if this will help you much but just reading the posts there might be something wrong with the information that is being sent to your SMTP host. You might make sure that the string that you are sending doesn't have extra characters attached to it or that a timeout is not occuring during the transfer of your username/password information. Sometimes the '@' gets translated into something else.
A 550 error usually indicates that the mail server didn't recived a valid user on the system, this came into play I believe when people start abusing SMTP to SPAM a server using everything under the sun...so filters were put in place i.e. If you are not a Qualified Domain Name registered mailserver and someone has a filter in place your message will go kersplat because forwarding is no longer being allowed. Yopu might try a diffrent tactic.
1. you might trim your strings.
2. build strings in a connect method so that its a bit less amateur code.

Well hope that gets you started in the right direction, I would read the ISO standards published for SMTP, you might get a better grip on the error codes that are bound to come up. -

I'm running Exchange 2013 sp1. I need to search for emails that contain a specific phrase, delete the emails and log the results. I have come up with two different commands, but not sure which one is better to use.

There are some differences between them, but both of them work well. The first one doesn't specify the start date and end date. What's more, the second one specifies the logging level for the search. You can choose one according to your needs.

I'm interfaceing with a web service which has defined its schema with choices. I'm not able to alter the xsd.
I assigned all elements but still get stuck with the empty choice elements:
According to the xml schemas, the xml document is invalid. The reason is: Error::cvc-complex-type.2.4.d: Invalid content was found starting with element 'Subject_niet_natuurlijk'. No child element is expected at this point.
Error::cvc-complex-type.2.4.b: The content of element 'Subject_niet_natuurlijk' is not complete. One of '{"http://www.interaccess.nl/webplus/statuswfm_v2":Bin, "http://www.interaccess.nl/webplus/statuswfm_v2":Unieke_code}' is expected.

German umlauts into question marks

The problem is that the German umlauts are converted to question marks . I create a mail message (see below). After the ship in here: Outlook 2010 can be seen, the German umlauts as question marks.

Is there a simple way to bind two DataGrids so that a change in one will be refelected in another? I have two DataGrids. One will be editable and the other will be used to display the information from the editable DataGrid in a confirmation section. Is there a simple example out there for doing this?
