Truncated filenames

So, I'm having this weird problem. In the finder windows, my filenames display 15 characters and then an elipses and then 11 more characters and the sometimes the filetype, which i don't have selected but shows on Word files. I don't have the option to show filetype selected in the finder.
Has anyone seen this before and know how to remedy it? it's really hard to find similarly-named files, and I tried "get info" (name still truncated) and the "option" key trick doesn't work -- when I hover over the filename with the option key down, nothing happens.
I'm at a loss, and what's frustrating is I know it's probably something I did, I just can't figure out how to undo it...
Thanks in advance!
Matt

  • My thought about the truncated filenames issue

The current iTunes version (7.0.2) for Windows still truncates filenames to 36/37 characters of all the music it imports from cd's and when you enable the option "Keep iTunes Music folder organized"
I have found several posts on these forums that suggest it has to do with the Windows 255 character path limit. But even the longest song name that I know doesn't reach this limit using the default library location and naming conventions and results in a path of just over 200 characters (even leaving room to spare for a ridiculously long username):
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Pink Floyd\Ummagumma (Studio Album)\2-06 Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict.m4a
Wouldn't it be much better to only truncate the names that actually do exceed the path limit, because iTunes has absolutely no problems playing files with long filenames. Because when I disable the "organize" & "copy files" options, rename the truncated files to match the tag data and fix the broken links by hand, it works like a charm.
But I would love to avoid all this manual fixing and managing and just let iTunes figure it out properly.
Please, rid iTunes of this frustrating behaviour!!!

  • Was CS5 save-as action truncating filename bug fixed in CS6?

I've run into the Photoshop CS5 bug whereby an action with save-as truncates the filename (and adds " copy").  Can someone confirm for me whether this was fixed in CS6?
For the original bug, see for example:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3807341
    Thanks,
    John

    Old thread, I know.
The reason I advised you to see for yourself is that I have no idea what issue or "bug" you were attempting to describe, as I have never, ever experienced any "truncated file names" myself; I'm very careful with file naming.  That's what the trial versions are there for, so you can make sure the new application works as you expect it to or not.

  • How can I truncate filenames?

Does anyone know a way to truncate a bunch of filenames? I've got about 17,000 files that in order for them work properly need the filenames to be no longer than 20 characters, and some of the filenames are rather long. Is there a script I can run to shorten all of the longer filenames and leave the short ones? Please help, I've tried everything.

    Hi, c.
This VersionTracker Search lists a variety of tools for batch renaming files or folders.
In particular, File Sequencer is quite nice and is freeware. I've also used FileWrangler, which is likewise freeware.
Out of curiosity, why 20 characters?
    Good luck!

  • Truncated filename when deploying

I am using TestStand 4.2.1.  I am working on my second test sequence and am seeing something that I did not see on the previous test I did.
I get all the folders organized the way I want in the View Destination screen then Build it.  After it completes and I deploy the test to a production system the install has many missing folders, and has truncated folder and file names.  It appears that all names loose a certain number of characters off the front end of their name.  The folders with short names are just missing, folder with longer names only have the last couple characters.
Before the above happened I had a couple builds that placed the folder / file structure in a different way than I wanted (but all file and folder names were correct).  I built a couple times to correct the folder structure, then I started getting the truncated names.
    Thanks for the help,
    Steve

I just opened the tsd file.  I went to the Distributed Files Tab / View Destination and did not Analyze the files yet.  Then I Analyzed the Source Files and the View Destination shows some changes.  I have attached a file with screen shots of the View Destination screen before and after.
This time the folder "ATE-LV" is lost, a few names have been truncated:
Elapsed Timer looks to be shortened to Timer
    Utilities shortened to s
I do not know where C came from
    Usage_Log shortened to g
I am using Windows 7 Professional SP1.  I did not move the file location.  I only opened it, did not build, only ran the Analyze Source Files.
I have been working on both projects at the same time.  I am not sure I may have had the issue with the other one too.  I have tried starting with a brand new tsd file and sometimes that will work fine and sometimes I get the truncating.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Batch rename in Bridge: can you truncate filenames?

I know there are free-standing programs to do this, but:
My images come out of the DSLR as DSC_001.NEF and so forth.
Is it possible with Batch Rename to just strip off the DSC so that DSC_001.NEF becomes just 001.NEF??

I've used A better Finder renamer. It's a good program. But also, i'm a fan of using the tools already at my disposal -- ie. what's included in the OS.
For simple rename actions I might use Automator or the "trim file names" apple script that apple includes a part of the sample scipts. I've modified it to my needs.
It all comes down to what works best for your individual situations.
With that said. I'd still like to see Adobe beef up the batch rename fucntion in Bridge. Call me spoiled, but i don't want to have to leave Bridge just to rename my files.

  • Super-narrow filename column in PDF export window

Does anyone know why the left (file name) column would be very, very narrow in the dialog box when exporting an ID doc as a PDF? And how it can be remedied? See screen shot attached. This isn't a huge problem, but it's annoying always seeing truncated filenames, which are often very similar, and so I'm continuously having to go up and widen the column. Widening the column
I've tested this to make sure it isn't an OS thing (Mac OS 10.6.8). As far as I've been able to determine, it happens in two situations only: exporting an InDesign (CS5.5) file to PDF, and in packaging the file. Doesn't occur when opening a file from within ID, or with Save As -- in InDesign or any other application in the Suite. Doesn't occur in other non-Adobe apps.
Thanks in advance, and as usual, I'll be embarrassed to find there's a simple fix.
    Rob

It's your Mac OS version that's old.
It's fixed in Mountain Lion Mac OS X 10.8.3 (see below):

  • Truncated file names

Hello, I have been using iTunes for years now, since it was first ported to the PC, and love it. However, one thing that will completely turn me away from the application is that iTunes truncates the filenames that I give tracks when importing. Much of what I'm importing is recorded by myself of lectures and songs that need more information in the file name than 35 or so characters. Is this hard coded, is it somehow changeable? If not, I'm going to have to move to another way of organizing my music & Lectures. Any suggestions / thoughts?

i too am discouraged by the problem of truncated filenames, and i will resort to using alternative software if i cannot manage to work out some sort of reasonable fix. thankfully, i believe that i have.
i've found that the latest release of itunes will not truncate filenames as long as the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" are disabled.
browsing through older discussions, it appears that this wasn't always the case, as at least one individual reported that itunes was shortening filenames even after the afformentioned settings were disabled.
personally, i do not mind keeping my music organized myself, and i would imagine that you will not either considering the fact that you're managing mostly lecture notes as oppossed to music albums.
best of luck to you mate! i'll return later to view your response and to report any problems that i may encounter.

  • View full file names of mail attachment titles in MAIL application (Apple)

I often get many attachments sent to me and when I am looking through emails for some reason all attachments show up as an ICON with a shortened version of the name of the file. It is always just the first 10 or so characters of the title and the last 3, which is usually the (.gif, .pdf, etc...)
A lot of what I get usually has the similar titles and only seeing the first few characters is not making things easy for me to find exactly what I am looking for.
Is there a way to view the full file name within the mail and within the application without having to open each file up each time in the APPLE MAIL application?
Maybe there's a way to show all attachments as a list with a smaller icon?
Anything that'll let me view the full title of all attachments would help.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I agree it is frustrating and literally just sent the wrong attachment to a customer because I was trying to live with the truncated filename system. I did find this nifty app called Mail Iconizer (http://lokiware.info/Mail-Attachments-Iconizer). It's pretty neat as it lets you control how attachments are viewed as well as pdfs and images (based on size). It's a free unlimited trial and $15 if you want to register so it's pretty inexpensive.

  • Enable video file and image file thumbnails WITHOUT enabling thumbnails for other filetypes

Hello. I am new to Mac and pulling my hair out at some of the limited UI options
I am wanting my image-files and video-files to appear in Finder (desktop etc) as thumbnails
However, I DON'T want PDFs, Excel, Word, PowerPoint files to have a preview thumbnail
Basically how things are now either way, it's very cumbersome visually to distinguish between file-types while cruising around my folders with a quick glance.
if thumbnail previews are on for all, its hard to tell at a quick glance which are PDFs, Excel files vs. images
similarly, the little "pdf" or "xlsx" or "docx" text overlay on these previews is so small and non-color coded as to be useless for quick-glance recognition of which filetype
if thumbnails are off, it's impossible to glance at files in a folder and know which image or video each is without wasting my precious miliseconds clicking on them, or trying to actually read truncated filenames
Here are some possible solutions which I hope somebody knows how to do:
globally enable or disable icon previews by filetype (preferred)
stipulate adding overlayed mini icons to certain filetypes
example: if it's a pdf, show the icon preview, but overlayed on that would be the red Adobe pdf icon/logo roughly a quarter of the size of the file icon (like is possible in Windows 7).
this way image and video previews can be seen at a glance, but having a big red or green or blue logo makes for immediate recognition of filetype
(least prefered but could help) ...somehow change the font color and increase the font size of the overlayed "pdf" "xlsx" "doc" "pptx"currently standard on these filetypes while showing icon preview but ALL are miniscule black text no matter which filetype
I'm quite dumbfounded right now that something for better immediate-glance filetype recognition isn't standard, or at least easily Google'able. All I've found is the Either/Other bamboozle.
Would love it to hear of a solution for this. Thanks all.

Put all of your separate flash movies into one move, and then
    use flash to
load the movies into a top section of the flash document.
Your site (this page) sounds like it would be best viewed
    entirely in Flash
    (at least easiest w/o reloading).

  • Moving from Mac to Windows..how to mess things..

Today i instaled a new laptop with windows 8...
Instaled iTunes and since i have near 1Tb of music, all my music files are in a volume in my MacMini , ex : "Music"
As coping take to long, i connect my MAC external drive, the volume "Music" to my windows pc, and maped with "M".
Before open iTunes in w8, exported my library, and with notepad changed the path from ..volume/music to "file://localhost/M:/", my path to music files in w8.
Open Itunes, changed the media folder to "M:", and imported my library from the xml file.
The clicks for keep itunes media organized are ON..
From 22000 songs, and almost 1200 albuns, ONLY 860 albuns are imported and thousands of songs are lost!
Message"Some songs are not imported because they cant be found".
Some albuns are incomplete, some songs with long names are imported, others not.
    Mostly classic...
    Truncate filenames ?
Strangely, the songs that are not imported they ALL have filenames truncated, but some songs with small filenames are not imported also.
And now my external hardrive with +22000 songs are completely messed songs filenames.
I use iTunes to catalog my music, listen when working and my MacMini conected to an Exoteric DA converter.
I also have all the cds....
I have backups from Mac, but i dont have a copy of this drive at this moment.. so i need  to crawl al my music in iTunes and fix all.
    Tedious work.
Any ideas how to fix this ?

She needs to get a Mac!

  • View attachments in list view, similar to the save dropdown

I've searched for this, but it doesn't seem anyone has had this specific request yet...
I want to view attachments I receive in list view, with small icons so I can quickly reference files by name rather than an icon with no visual representation and a truncated filename. Similar to how the flyout 'save' menu represents the files. I would use the save list, but I want to open the file from mail quickly rather than saving it and then opening it from finder.
See the example of what my messy attachments look like:
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/102172/cluttered.png
I just downloaded Mail Attachment Iconizer, but it's worthless. It shows the same icon view with full, long filenames which actually makes it harder to find what I'm looking for.
I need something that allows list view. I fear I might have to go back to T'bird. :/

I tried the rollover trick, and it apparently only works when you rollover the attachments at the bottom on the email. It would be nice if that worked at the top of the email when I click the little black attachment triangle. Scrolling to the bottom of the email to hover over links isn't convenient.
Also, the hover-over filename isn't quickly digestible because it gives you additional superfluous information such as downloaded status, mime type and "Control click for menu". See screenshot:
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/102172/additional-info.png
The QuickLook option isn't what I want because I need to find things by filename, often from a large batch of attachments which I have never seen before, so seeing them as thumbnails doesn't really help.
So, from those suggestions I guess the unfortunate answer is Mail.app doesn't have a simple filename view and I have to use something else.

  • Confusing cd issue, easy cd creator on win2k and solaris 9

If this doesn't confuse the heck out of you, please provide any ideas that pop into your head:
I have two systems, both running Win2k with Easy CD Creator 5 for cd burning purposes. I'm burning the same folders/files onto a cd from these two systems, these folders/files make use of long filenames. In the burn options, I'm choosing all the same settings. As EZCD5 does not support Rock Ridge, I choose Joliet (I know, Sun doesn't read Joliet...which is why this is confusing...keep reading) for the filesystem type.
The cd from system one shows truncated filenames (DOS 8.3 style, ~1 etc.).
The cd from system two shows the extended filenames.
I'm trying to find how system two does this, so that the change can be made a many systems to be used in burning CD's to be read on a Solaris system. I've hunted through the registry to no avail (althought I'm not done). The fact that Solaris hsfs doesn't support Joliet makes this confusing as all get out. I'm done to try to hunt for differences in some of the DLL files...but it's not going anywhere.
Does anyone have ANY idea how this could be possible? I've gotten no response from the Roxio forums, so I'm praying someone here will have an inkling of a clue...

    Hi Tyme,
I would guess that your second system is producing CDs with an ISO-9660 level 2 file system, which supports long file names, and which Solaris can read. The first is probably making CDs with an ISO-9660 level 1 file system.
    Cheers,
    Chuck

  • Filenames getting truncated in Save for Web AppleScript

Hey all, running CS4 on an Apple Macbook Pro (using OS X 10.5.6). I am creating an AppleScript that saves out a number of files with different filenames using save for web. The problem is that Photoshop CS4 is truncating the filename, and using a shorter filename is not an option (there is identifying info in the filename that I need to retain). Is there a way within the script I can set it to allow longer filenames? My current save for the web script line looks as follows:
    export current document in file filename as save for web with options {quality:60, web format:JPEG}
What happens is that a filename like this:
    CANON-PRO8000MKII-ideal-ideal-24.jpg
    gets cut down to this:
    CANON-PRO8000MKII-ideal-ideal#0
I believe that there there is a PShop bug here that has a hard-coded limit on the filename, but which does not happen if you enter  the file name manually: if I go into the save for web dialog and enter the full filename, it works fine.  Any ideas?

I recall having this problem too, my solution was to truncate the file name in the script prior to the save, then rename the saved file.
    e.g.
if length of theNewFileName > 31 then
    set theTempFileName to theNewFileName
set theNewFileName to (text 1 through (31 - (length of theFileExtension) - 1) of theNewFileName & "." & theFileExtension) as string
    end if
set theNewFile to (saveToFolder & theNewFileName) as string
    -- Save the file here
    if theTempFileName = "" then
    -- File name wasn't truncated
    else
    -- Rename truncated file
    tell application "Finder"
    try
set name of (theNewFile as alias) to theTempFileName
    on error errMsg number ERRNUM
display dialog "Error renaming file - " & errMsg
    end try
    end tell
    end if

  • Truncating of filename in transaction BAUP

    Hi.
I have made a small program that recevies a file from XI, places it on the application server and calls transaction BAUP with that file. But the problem is that the path for the file gets truncated in transaction BAUP, i have tried to debugg the program and the variable for the filename is an char(128) and the path that i have entered is only 45 characters long. Have anybody else encountered this problem and maybe found a solution for it?
    Regards Liselotte.

Since the file name parameter is maintained as a select-option its restricted to 45 characters. you cannot do anything about it unless otherwise you copy the underlying program in to your name space and change the file field to a parameter
