Trying to import iPhoto 6.0.2 Library to Aperture 1.1 - Need help!

I just installed aperture and updated to version 1.1 I attempted import my iphoto library into aperture, but ran into a serious problem. A large number of my jpg pictures are coming up as "Unsupported Image Format." I have figured out that all the pictures that have this problem are original unedited jpg. All the edited pictures seem to appear.
I suspect it has something to do with my setting in iPhoto to not copy pictures when importing them into the library. So instead of a copy of these originals, iPhoto merely has a alias or link to the original picture in the actual iPhoto library. While I can see why this might be a problem, it's a bit frustrating that the feature was introduced in iPhoto6, but then causes problem when you want to go from iPhoto6 to Aperture.
Any suggestions or advice on how I might be able to work around this would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm eager to start my workflow in Aperture, but all my pictures are stuck in iPhoto.
Thanks!

1. make a backup of your iPhoto library folder or the 'Originals' folder within.
2. paste this script into Script Editor and save it as an Application.
3. in the Finder, drop the 'Originals' folder from within the iPhoto library onto the new application; what we call a Droplet. the Finder will replace all aliases within the folder and nested folders with their original image files.
the script:
-- begin
to open theFolders
repeat with i from 1 to theFolders's length
copy theFolders's item i to theFolder
if (theFolder as string) ends with ":" then
         replaceWithOriginal(theFolder)
      end if
   end repeat
   return
end open
to replaceWithOriginal(theFolder)
   tell application "Finder"
set containedItems to every alias file of theFolder
repeat with i from 1 to containedItems's length
copy containedItems's item i to theAlias
         try
copy theAlias's original item to theOriginal
duplicate theOriginal to theAlias's container with replacing
on error number -1728 -- orphaned alias
            delete theAlias
         end try
      end repeat
set containedFolders to every folder of theFolder
repeat with i from 1 to containedFolders's length
         replaceWithOriginal(containedFolders's item i) of me
      end repeat
   end tell
end replaceWithOriginal
-- end

New user here.  Trying to import iPhoto 9.4.2 libraries into Aperture 3.4.3 as referenced files. When accessing File>Import>Library, it finds the iPhoto library just fine, but then imports it as Master files. No option that I can find to leave the photos in place on the file system.  All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.  What?

All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.
That has been true for the previous Aperture versions. Now Aperture simply treats the original image files exactly as they are in the imported library. Referenced images will stay referenced, managed will be imported as managed. But you can always relocate the imported managed images afterwards by using "File > Relocate".

  • Trying to import IPhoto 6.06 into Aperture 3.0 But Import Button Disabled

I'm trying to import my iphoto 6.0.6 library into aperture 3.0. I was planning to leave the photos in place. I'm using file->import->iphoto library. Then I've entered store files in current location and do not import duplicates.
The problem is that not matter how I set the parameters in the import dialog the import button is never enabled.
How do I get the import button to enable?

It would be helpful if the iPhoto version limitation was stated somewhere.
So, then are there any options for importing from earlier version of iPhoto into Aperture 3?

  • Import iPhoto into iMovie project library

import iPhoto into iMovie project library 10.0.2

In iMovie your iPhoto Library should show up in the Library panel as the top listed Librar., Double click on it and all your events from iPhoto will appear. Photos and videos will be there.

  • "To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded".  Aperture already up to date. still cant open aperture library. please advice

When I try to open my aperture library, this is the message pop out  " TO OPEN THIS iPHOTO LIBRARY IN APERTURE, IT FIRST NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED. "
My apperture application is already up to date. no more upgrade available. please advice what to do.

The update refers to the library not the application.
So is this an Aperture library you are trying to open in iPhoto or an iPhoto library you are trying to open in Aperture? You're post is confusing on this point.
In either case make sure the library is up-to-date in the originating application then the other should open it.
BTW what version of iPhoto abnd Aperture are you running?

  • Can I open iPhoto 7.1.5 library with aperture 3.4.3?

Can I open iPhoto 7.1.5 library with aperture 3.4.3?

Is there any other workaround, such as exporting my iPhoto 7.1.5 library to some other format and then importing such format to Aperture 3.4.3? I will be grateful for any help with this odd situation.
How many photos are you talking about? If you have huge iPhoto Libraries, and have invested much work into organizing and adjusting your photos, you really will want to import your iPhoto library as Library. This way you will transfer your work, not only your photos.
If your library is small, and you do not mind to do all the organisation and adjusting again, you can export your photos from iPhoto 7 - create a folder in your "Pictures" folder and export your photos from iPhoto to this folder, one event at a time as separate folders of image files. You can either export the original images or the edited versions. If you have done much editing, export both, to save your originals. Then import these folders of image files into your Aperture library.
But if you have huge libraries to transfer and many years of editing to preserve, the sensible thing to do would be to invest into iPhoto 9.4.3 and to upgrade your iPhoto libraries to the new unified format. You will not only save your edits and library organisation, you will also save plenty of disk space, for you can import the edited versions and originals as master-version pairs and not have to deal with duplicates.
When did you buy Aperture? Do you have a serial key for Aperture, that can be used with the Aperture Trial version? Then you might consider to reinstall Aperture 3.2.4 from your backup (rename your current Aperture version while you are doing that) or to download the Trial and try to import your iPhoto library into a new Aperture library. Earlier Aperture versions could import older iPhoto libraries, but will import two image files (Version and original) for each iPhoto image. So you will end up with plenty of duplicate images that you will have to organize. (A link to the Trial is here: Aperture 3.4: May quit unexpectedly on launch after updating).
As I said - to invest into iPhoto '11 will have a lot of advantages.

first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the revo uninstaller http://http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.
next download itunes. it worked for me hope this is helpful!!
oonce you get into the revo uninstallergo thru to delete itunes hit uninstall on the itunes icon then you will go thru to it will tell u the same nmessage about the feature and network hit cancell then go thru and hit scan (make sure bthe advance scan button is pushed) this will take awhile but go thru the list and hit everything associated with itunes. hit delete then install itunes again. it worked for me hope it works for you!

  • "Import failed" message when trying to import iPhoto library to PE11

I receive an "Import failed" message when trying to import my iPhoto library to my trial version of PE11. I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5 and using iPhoto 11. Anyone able to help? I have tried 4 or 5 times now with the same result.

If you're really sure you want to import the whole iphoto library (which is what that command does), then just export the photos to the desktop, put them where you want to keep them, and use File>Get photos and videos>from files and folders to import them. The 'from iphoto' command makes duplicates anyway, so you aren't losing anything by doing it this way.

  • Problem importing Iphoto 7.1.5 library to Iphoto 9.1.1

    Hi,
I just bought the new Iphoto 9.1.1 but it can't import my existing library from the current Iphoto 7.1.5!
Does anyone know how to fix the problem? If I can't import this library it makes no sense installing the new Iphoto
    Thanks for your help

In fact I try to upgrade it. When Iphoto 9.1.1 opens for the first time, we are requested to locate the previous library. Doing this Iphoto can't open the library and closes.
I tried to install Iphoto 9.1.1 and after create a new library and then try to open the previous being sure that Iphoto 9.1.1 was correctly installed but it can't open the Iphoto 7.1.5 library. So I had to restore Iphoto 7.1.5 with time machine because I don't want to lose my current library.

  • IMovie 08 hangs while trying to import iPhoto movies at the start.

    Hi guys,
When I open Imovie 08, it asks me to import iphoto movies. Then it stays there for ages and never ends importing those movies. I know I can just skip this process but I want to edit those videos from iPhoto.
I guess is some corrupted file it is trying to import what is causing this incident but I have no idea how to tell which is the "bad" file since iMovie doesn't give any information about it.
    Any clues?
    Thanks in advence

    Hi,
I wouldn't say I have such a lot of movies in Iphoto but deffintely they are quite a few... anyway, I suspect it will never end because the timer gets bigger and bigger; and yes I left it running overnight with no luck.
Is there any way to see in which video is iMovie having the problem? The other workarround means having to backup and delete videos randomly until I find "the bad one".
    Cheers.

  • Exported my library to an external drive (new with nothing else on it) Trying to import to iTunes on another computer (Dell) with out success.  Help Please

Need help importing my library from and external drive

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

  • How to import iphoto events from remote library into local library

I know how to access my MBA's iphoto library from my imac, however I don't know how to import any event/photo into my local imac's library. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Once that opens by default with iphoto, then... went to Finder again, Pictures, right click on iphoto library (local Imac library) and select "open with" = Aperture.
There I had my MBA's library opened on iphoto and my local Imac library opened on Aperture. I simply dragged the events from iphoto to Aperture. Worked like a charm..
PS: It is obvious to say that for this to work, both Imac and MBA have to be Shared in the same network
That works, but there is a better way with Aperture. The problem.  If you drag the photos from Aperture to iPhoto, you only transfer the previews and you lose quality, because you do not transfer the high quality originals.
Aperture can do more for you:
Select the event   (in Aperture "Projects") you want to transfer in the library Inspector and then use "File > Export > Project as new Library".  This will create a new photo library with only the elected items.
Then open your destination iPhoto library in Aperture and select the command "File > Import > Library" and select the partial library with your events. Aperture will now merge this library into your iPhoto library.
This way, you will transfer the originals and all editing, keywords, etc, and effectively merge your iPhoto libraries preserving all your work.

  • Can you use iPhoto as your referenced library in Aperture 3?

Hi folks, new to the forum here and I've searched around older posts for an answer to this dumb question but can't seem to find it. Any insight much appreciated.
I'm a relatively new mac user, migrated over just under 5,000 photos from Photoshop Elements on the PC to iPhoto on my new iMac and very happy with it. I was going to get the new PSE for Mac to use as my editor with iPhoto, but now that Aperture 3 is such a ridiculously good price on the App store I've been testing that out and I love it!
So the question is, as I start to get more serious about my photography I would love to be able to use Aperture for everything - but the rest of the family just want the simplicity and great interface of iPhoto for the family shots. Can I / we keep importing, storing photos in the iPhoto library, and everyone else just uses that for the cropping, red-eye removal etc., but I can access the library in Aperture (sort of like a referenced library) make changes, add versions etc. without messing it up?
Hope that makes sense, and again, apologies for what must be the millionth time this question has been asked.
    James

    In a word, no.
Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
