Trying to Keep an Alpha Channel From After Effects to Final Cut Pro

I've created a nice little transition in After Effects that uses an alpha channel. When I export it from AE I save it as a Quicktime movie with RGB + Alpha.
When I drop it on the timeline, though, in Final Cut the bar above it turns orange and therefore it plays very jerky. It makes it hard to tell if the transition is looking like it should without exporting first.
I tried converting to ProRes, but then the alpha channel is lost and so the transition is useless.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my very short transition clip to play correctly on the timeline without losing the alpha channel. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ray

You need to render it in the sequence. CMD R.
You're working in +Unlimited RT+, so the orange bar means that it is unrendered and FCP will try to play it back as well as possible, given your hardware specs.
When you render it, it will take on the compression codec of your +Sequence Settings+, and play in real time.
Have a look at the manual for understanding Sequence Settings, Unlimited RT vs. Safe RT, and Rendering.
BTW, unless you rendered your transition from AE with a Straight alpha channel, as opposed to a Premultiplied one, the edges of the graphic will look wrong.

  • Exporting from After Effects to Final Cut Pro

    Hi
Could anybody tell me the best way to export from After Effects, back in to Final Cut Pro? Do I need to get Automatic Duck for this, if so which one?
    Thanks for any help!
    Matt

You need to add your composition to the render cue and then export to the same format and codec that you're using in FCP. Automatic Duck is a great tool for getting your FCP or Motion timelines into After Effects but most of the time I simply select a clip in FCP, export it as a reference movie, bring it into AE for processing, then render a file to use as a replacement in FCP.
Search for After Effects Final Cut Workflow and you'll find some more tips including this one. It isn't bad for organization but it misses the point of using the same codec. All my FCP projects are ProRez HQ or ProREZ 444 so that's my choice. Also, if you use the entire shot, which is not a bad idea, then you can use the replace footage option in FCP which is more efficient than the demoed technique of dragging your rendered shot into the timeline and then trimming if needed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there an easier way to work with adobe after effects and final cut pro x

I use adobe after effects and I am thinking about deleting motion and compressor ( I can always install again). If you have a good reason to keep those apps let me know because I don't want to be hasty. If I delete them and stick with after effects and final cut pro...  Is there a secret to easy working between FCPX and adobe after effects?
    Thanks

You'll go from FCP X to and from Motion a lot easier than AE.  Motion does pretty much anything AE does, most of the time faster and easier.  Without Motion, you can't do custom templates.  You can't customize the encoding of files without Compressor.  Why would you want to remove them from your system?  Leave them, use AE if you want along side of them.  But I'd learn Motion first.  Cause AE doesn't read FCPXML, so going back and forth between them is a PITA.
And until Apple releases the round trip between FCP X and Motion fully, we have this gem:

  • After effects vs final cut pro?

Is comparing adobe after effects to final cut pro, a fair comparison? What I mean is, looking around on youtube, I see better... effets on projects made with projects on after effects. now, I love FCP for editing, does adobe give a better program thats can do effects. I am looking to make my videos look more profesional, and I notice after effects has effects built into its system to do effects.
After looking at this vidoe, im sold, final cut pro can not do this that quick.

Effects do NOT make your videos more professional. Professionalism is the only thing that can make your videos appear to have been produced, written, shot, and edited by a professional. Even faking professional video requires elevated professionalism.
Hey! Just wait one second! That's is NOT what is promised by Apple and whoever makes those promises! All I have to do is buy the computer and the software and I'm a "professional!"
But I truly and strongly encourage you to go ahead and purchase After Effects based solely on the Video Copilot tutorials. Know in advance that AE is about ten times as complex as FCP ever will be and you will want to post extensively in the Beginner's AE Forum on the cow.

I would also suggest extensive posting in the FCP Beginners forum on the Cow for the OP.

  • Quality Setting for exporting from After Effects To Final Cut

I've created an animation in After Effects for Final Cut.  My Export setting are Quicktime  Format Options are RGB, Millions of Colors Pre-Multiplied (Matted)
Although the font images are clear in After Effects I'm getting pixelized font images on the final product.  See below
Here's the image before in After Effects before I attempt to render the movie
Quite a difference as you can see.  Any suggestions for setting coming out to clear up the problem?

Michelle, are you able to get to the point in the screenshot below? Is ProRes an option there? Does animation or Apple Intermediate Codec show up? Thos might be a couple alternatives if ProRes is unavailable.

  • From After Effect to Final Cut?

It's possible to export from Final Cut to After Effects timeline?

    > (Whatever happend to Automatic Duck?)
Adobe acquired the software from Automatic Duck and hired Wes and Harry Plate. The Pro Import After Effects feature in After Effects is the updated Pro Import AE functionality previously sold by Automatic Duck.
BTW, you can download other Automatic Duck software from their website for free these days.

  • Rendering After Effects to Final Cut Pro

I'm very new to Final Cut Pro and After Effects. I've managed to learn the basics for FCP on Lynda.com and I can create a basic video. What I'd like to do now is create text intro that I can apply to the beginning of all my videos. I learned about the text effects in After Effects. From with After Effects I can open a text effect and create the text that I want. My question is, what settings should I use to export this to a format that I can then import into my movie timeline in FCP?
I'm creating HD videos in YouTube at 720p.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome home, Mench!
To maintain the alpha channel from AE, the OP will want to look up how to be using two codecs, Animation and ProRes 4444. Both are extensively described in the help system for FCP and After Effects or just google them for several hours of interesting reading. The OP will also need to understand the concept of an alpha channel which, come to think of it, was difficult for me.

  • How do you move text edited in After Effects into Final Cut Pro?

I edited text in After Effects and want to use it at the start of my movie which is in Final Cut Pro.
How do I export the After Effects editted text into FCP?
    I have FCP 7
    Thankyou

I suppose the way to do it is to export to Quicktime and import that into FCP X.
Use ProRes 4444 codec in order to preserve transparency (alpha channel).

  • After Effects and Final Cut Pro

I've got a pretty good understanding of FCP (and getting better at Motion); of course one can never learn enough, but as I've searched around for work as a video editor a lot employers want an applicant with some Adobe After Effects experience.
Can anyone suggest a book or DVD or set of tutorials to gain a working knowledge of AE so that when a project requires jumping into AE I'm not totally lost. Or is it something that I shouldn't be too worried about, as Motion could be a good substitute for AE.
    TIA
    Cheers,
    D

The books by Chris & Trish Meyers are great. They used to be split into a Vol 1, & Vol 2: the latter being more advanced. Now they've combined them into a single book. (LINK) You can't go wrong with these authors!
There's a ton of video training over at lynda.com, for AE as well.
As far as whether or not you should pursue this is up to you. More arrows in the quiver, the better, I think. Depends too on the specific jobs you're approaching. Are they saying "AE" because they have an established pipeline, implementing it - specifically - already? Or are they saying "AE" as a general term for motion graphics. Meaning, if you can get the same result from Motion, that someone else got in AE, then what's the difference?
Here's another tip: Fundamentals. It can never hurt to up your skills/knowledge of color theory, grid systems, general design, typography, layouts, timing, illustration, infographics...etc. All these things underly what you're going at with any Mograph package. If you can come to grips with these concepts then what you use to express them will become irrelevant. You could use Motion, AE, C4D, Combustion, Flame, etc, etc... Nowadays what I'm seeing is a lot of "designers" who are such, only in name. Meaning, the own a graphics app. They don't really know how to "design" and their work shows it.
Focus on the ammunition, not the gun. You'll be so much better off in the long run.

  • After Effects and Final Cut Express

    Hey,
Is it possible to export a project from After Effects into Final Cut Express? I just want to make sure before I get it.
    That's all, thanks,
    Leroy

You can export a QuickTime movie from After Effects and use it in FCE. AE projects will not open in FCE.

  • Best way to export from Motion 2 into Final Cut Pro 5, working in DV?

I am working in DV in Final Cut Pro 5, and I would like to get the best quality from anything I bring in from Motion 2 into Final Cut Pro 5, I keep hearing use the Animation codec. I would like to hear from the Panel of experts.
    Happy Thanksgiving,
    Sebastian

The Best way is to round-trip from FCP. Or simply import the .motn file directly into FCP. If you require an alpha channel and for some reason don't want to bring the .motn file in, Animation with millions+ for the colors (+ is the alpha channel) will work, But if you just want straight DV, you should export a DV file.

  • From iTunes Store to Final Cut Pro

How do open a song I downloaded from iTunes Store, into Final Cut Pro?
I tried Opening it, in Final Cut, and I tried importing it. But it comes out as silence. Final Cut knows how long the song is, but that is it.
Then can I edit the song in Final Cut?

    You can't and shouldn't.
    Your license doesn't permit it.

will final cut pro X 10.0.8  still be available for purchase after the new final cut pro release for mavericks/new macpro in december?

10.0.8 is no longer available, except in the trial version. The current sale version is 10.0.9. Apple has never sold older versions of their software, only the current version. That's not going to change in the near future.
