Trying to measure 2 channels of 5MHz TTL with E series board

Using E series MIO board, LabVIEW 7, trying to measure two ~5MHz TTL signals. (sequential is OK)
Do not (can not) use AO channel.
Desire to use signal routing VI (I think) but, examples and description of exactly how to do this is unclear.
An adaptation of 'measure frequency.vi' with addition of 'signal routing.vi' would probably be what I need.
Unless of course there is something simpler.

Using the 'measure frequency.vi' uses both counters on the MIO board, so you'll definitely have to measure the signals sequentially. By default, the example will measure frequency on the selected counter's default SOURCE pin (PFI8 for ctr0, PFI3 for ctr1). If you want to use the same example to measure on a different PFI line you can scroll to the left and change the 'Source Specification' cluster to your desired PFI line. All this said, if you have both of your signals connected to different PFI lines you shouldn't need to use the 'signal routing.vi'. After the first measurement you can just change the source selection and run again. Hope this helps.

  • I am trying to measure 8 separate frequencies with a FP-CRT-502 module.

I have a FP-CRT-502 module and need to measure 8 frequencies. The examples I've found through NI allow for 7 measurements (with one channel being used to generate a gating pusle). I found something from NI indicating that this can be done but it did not give much detail. Does anyone know how this is done? Thanks

    Hello,
The example uses one of the counter modules to generate the KNOWN pulse signal for the gate (by using the counter clock). You know the width (time) of the pulses on the gate.
If you have a device that generates a known pulse signal you can use this signal as the gate signal for all of the counter channels and then determine the frequency (freq = pulses/time).
This device can be another FP Counter module or some other type of device that generates accurate pulses.
    I hope this helps.

  • Trying to get in touch via email with customer ser...

    Dear Forum,
I am currently more than 3 months into an unresolved fault with my service (originally logged 11th Dec 2014). I am trying to establish a means, in writing, to express my disappointment and concerns in this regard to the customer management team (CMT) who are nominally helping to resolve this. Sadly, BT has arranged its customer service provision (sic) in such a way that they can get in touch with me at any point and through a variety of means but there is no routine way for me to get in touch directly with the member of the CMT dealing with the fault. Fighting through switchboards and help desks who have to relay the message internally rather than transferrring me is all very frustrating.
Does anyone know of a reliable means of getting in touch with the CMT directly via email / web-form? (I do now have the desk number of the lady in the CMT dealing with the fault but for a phonecall to be effective she has to be on shift; the email inbox is more convenient and the situation has really gone beyond where phonecalls are appropriate.)
I signed up to the forums following a Google search for ‘Libby Barr’, the various comments and threads with her name in the title suggesting that there was some direct route to customer service / resolution support through forums. Entertainingly, I see that there is no board for ‘customer service issues’.
Further, the ‘welcome to forums’ / verification email that gets sent out closes with this line
"If you need to contact us please email <this address>" (Evidently, I cannot quote the addess is a forum post, but you know what it.)
So I thought that I’d make use of this email address, rather air dirty linen in public, and got
"Thanks for trying to get in touch with us. Sorry but we don’t monitor this mailbox, so you won’t get a reply to your email."
Thank you, BT, I did need a laugh.

  • Trying to measure frequency with the cFP-CTR-502. Can't get tutorial to work!

    Hello,
I am trying to measure the frequency of a
signal that I'm counting using the cFP-CTR-502. I can successfully
count pulses but I what I really need to know is the RATE of counts
(counts/s or the frequency). I have found some Labview programs that
supposedly do this that I've downloaded from ni.com (link below). The
concept makes sense of using a gate and output but the programming is
crazy - at least the program in the link below is.
    1. Is there an easier way to measure the frequency of counts?
    2. Why will the program from the link below ( frequency_measurement__ctr_.vi
) not work on my system? I get an error everytime I run it. Could I be
missing some VI's necessary for it to run? Or is it from another
LabView version that is not compatible?
          The
entire error is:   -32810 occured at FieldPoint initialization failed.
Possible causes, 1. Missing or corrupt configuration file; 2. Failed to

  • NI-5122 measure trigger frequency of TTL trigger signal

I have two signal channels and a TTL trigger signal on my NI-5122. The frequency of the tigger signal is between 5 and 30 Hz. Before I want to sample the two signal channels I need to know the actual trigger frequency to calculate and set sampling rate and number of sampling points. I use LabView 7.1
What's the best way to measure the frequency (5-30 Hz) of the TTL signal connected to the 5122 trigger input?
    many thanks for your help.
    Markus

    Jason V,
thanks for your help. So there is no programable counter on the 5122...
My freuqency is constant and I need an accuracy of <1%.
    What I did meanwhile:
    I make a loop of e.g. 10 triggerevents.
I record the times when the trigger events occur.
After the loop I fit a line to the time vs. iteration number.
This gives a pretty good value for the period, hence I get the inverse frequency.
I need 10-30 trigger events to be accurate.
For 10 Hz this makes 1-3 seconds init at the start of each measurement.
    I can reach a relative error as low as 1e-4. That's o.k.
I did some more tweaking to allow for missed trigger events.
The whole VI works fine to retrieve frequencies up to 100 Hz.
For higher frequencies I am limited due to the millisecond resolution of LabViews 'Tick' vi.
    ====
For higher frequencies I would program a counter:
Start a measurement for 1000 scans and measure the time for that.
However, this is not accurate enough for low frequencies and short recording times (10-30 trigger events).
    ====
I also thought about Fourier transforming the signal itself and locating the peak frequency.
Same as above: This is only accurate when I record many periods.
    ====
The fastest and most accurate solution would be to sample the trigger signal itself.
Then I would need only one period and could detect the trigger slopes with microsecond resolution.
However, I need both input channels for recording simultaneous signals.
    Conclusion:
    (1) The NI-5122 does not has a programable counter on board
    (2) For my application I found a solution tht works.

  • How to write to one channel of a task with multiple channels? (plus other things...)

So I have a USB-6009 DAQ.  It has 12 digital output lines.  I want one channel that is "Dev0\line0:10" which represents an address bus in my application.  And a second channel "Dev0\line11" which represents a program enable line in my application.
I have tried creating two different tasks and adding one channel to one task and the other channel to the other task.  The only task that worked was the task with "Dev0\line0:10".  It was always the task containing that channel, regardless of the order of creation.  So then I moved on to a different method.  (I read somewhere that I should only create one task of each type.  like only 1 DO task only 1 AO task etc...  However I am also using the two analog ouputs to and have a task for each AO and they work just fine.)
I tried add both channels to one task.  But when I needed to control only the address bus, I had to have some information for the other channel as well.  This was a little trying, but I could configure it that way.  But it turned out to be easier for me to just make one channel with all the lines and OR in the data for line11 with each write.
I just wondered if it was possible to write to one particular channel of a task and not the other channel?  That would really be the ideal solution for me.  especially if I could write multiple samples to the one channel while I left the other channel alone.  Which brings up another complaint... Why does WriteMultiSamplePort only work if I use a DigitalMultiChannelWriter, and not if I use a DigitalSingleChannel writer even though my task only has one channel (and by the way I set up the channel as one channel for all lines)?  A perplexing issue to be sure.
And no I can't just load all my samples into an array and write them all at once because I also have to manipulate the two analog outputs in between the various digital writes.
I am using NI DAQmx 7.5 and C#.  I am trying to use the DAQ to program a digital switch, which has proven to be a real challenge.  In push-pull mode there is too much ringing for the switches programming port to tolerate.  But the switches interface is LVTTL, so I needed the 3.3V.  When I changed to open-collector I had to use voltage dividers to drop down to 3.3V.  But the rise time using open-collector is too slow for me the program the switch in serial mode, so I had to change to parallel.  The switch has an 11 bit multi-plexed ADDR/DATA bus.  So the DAQ I had chosen to use which had plenty of lines for the serial programming, now is strained to it's absolute limits by the parrallel interface.   ARGH.  The only output I am not currently using is the counter, and I'm going to need it if I ever want to read back from the switch.  But first I have to seperate the ADDR/DATA bus from the CS line on the DIO lines of the DAQ.  And I don't know for sure what I'm going to do about the voltage level translation when I have to go bi-directional.  Maybe I can filter out the ringing in push-pull mode?  Any thoughts on that?

    Hi Saikey,
In most cases, you are exactly right: you can only use one task for one type of operation (i.e. only one analog input task in the same program). With the USB 6009, you can have multiple digital output tasks running at the same time. I was able to run a digital output program with two different digital output tasks configured for a USB-6009.
However, you stated that it would be better if you had everything in a single task for your application and write data to only some of the channels. The easiest way to do this is to modify your array of output data so that only the data to that one channel is changing. So, for example, if you keep writing a 0 to the channels that do not need new data nothing will change.
If you have to change your analog outputs during this program, you could create an event structure that would stop and restart the analog output tasks without changing the digital output data. I hope that you find this information helpful.

    Hal L.

  • Measure frequency of 50 Hz with at least 3 digits

    Hi.
I have Labview 8.2 , and I want to measure the network frequency (50Hz) with at least 3 digits and good accuracy.
Is there any solutions to do that in Labview , easy? I also have a DAQ 6210.
    Thanks.

    Hi dsasorin,
You can use your 6210 to measure the frequency of your
signal. The 6210 has 2 - 32 bit counters on-board. It has built-in timebases of
80, 20 and 0.1 MHz available for use with the counters. You will still need to
attenuate the signal. The maximum input rating for the 6210’s counters in 5
volts. They are TTL digital inputs.  Also the counter inputs are not
designed for negative voltages. So you may need to rectify your signal as well
as attenuating it. Examples of frequency measurements using the DAQmx drivers
can be found in the NI Example Finder. In Labview go to Help >> Find
Examples… >> Hardware Input and Output >> DAQmx >> Counter
    Measurements >> Digital Frequency.
Please let me know if you have any questions and take care.

    Hi Madhava,
Are you unable to get the example program to work?  Are you using an Aux cable to connect the switch to the DMM or are you triggering from the connector block of the switch?
One good resource is to open the NI-Switches Help from Start >> Programs >> National Instruments >> NI-Switch >> Documentation >> NI-Switches Help.  Go to the Search tab and search for Single Module Scanning - Handshaking.  There are sections for SCXI or PXI depending on which form factor you are using.  This will explain which triggers to use and how to connect the DMM and Switch together.
In the same help file, if you search for Scan Lists, this will show you the proper syntax for the scan lists.  The scan list can all be listed in one text box and does not have to be an array of strings.
I think the best way to proceed is to take the example that I showed you save it as a new program so you can go back to the original if you need, make it work and then modify it to do what you need.  Add the write to file for example.  If you have any questions about specific issues, I can help you with those.

  • Fetch and peak detection all channels of PXI-5105 with 4M record... HELP!

    Dear collegaues!
Please help me to improve performance my application, see attachment, and sorry for my English.
So, my task is to fetch and peak detection all (eight) channels of PXI-5105 with 4M record and sample rate 4M with loop 1 sec...
Inputs of all my channels are wiring to NaI detectors with 0,5...1 microsec of pulse width (really) and freq from 0 kHz to no more than 40 kHz.
Why I've selected 4M record and 4M sample rate namely? Answer is that I've tested PXI-5105 previously by generator 40 kHz and 0,5 microsec width pulse. It is working fine and peak detection indicate for me 40000 pulses/sec. If I set lower than 4M record and 4M sample rate it is no working. In my honest opinion 4M record and 4M sample rate are very min settings.
In the present time peak detection working only 6 channels... When I've connected to diagram more than 6 "peak detector.vi" - I see the error "...out of memory...".
Please advise me, what is to be done for that is all working fine.

What you are running into is an out of memory error in LabVIEW.  You have enough onboard memory to capture 4M samples per channel on the digitizer.  The issue is with fetching and manipulating that data in your LabVIEW application.  You will want to step back and take a look at how you are handling your data to understand why that is happening.
    1) 4M samples/ch = 4M Samples x 2Bytes/sample/ch = 8M Bytes/ch
    2) Expanding to 8 channels creates 64M Bytes of data in the raw binary format
    3) You are scaling your data by fetching in a 1D WDT format.  This stores each sample in a 32 bit double, expanding the memory to 256M Bytes (in addition to timing information)
    4) By splitting up the array of waveforms and branching data it you can easily create copies of this data, and if your consumer loop is not completed with the last data, you may be trying to capture a whole new set, creating yet another copy.
So you can see that while you have 1.5GB of controller memory, when dealing with large arrays of data you can easily eat up that memory.  There are several things you can try to make your application more efficient.  You could work with an unscaled binary data format, you can wire the array of waveform directly to the peak detect vi (instead of creating 8 copies, you will have a single copy with arrays of output) or you could revisit the record size you have chosen (experimenting with your threshold and width settings might help you to get the results you want with smaller record lengths).

  • Error 200141 when trying to measure motor encoder's speed from PCI 6221 card,

    Hi,
I was trying to measure angular speed of a motor from its encoder signal. I'm using Ctr pin from PCI 6221 card take signals from the encoders. The problem comes when I've got an Error-200141 saying "data was overwritten before it could be read". I have tried a few ways as follows to overcome this problem.
         - Use DMA
         - Get rid of the noise from the signal by shielding the wire from encoder to DAQ card and using a capacitor.
None of those seemed to solve the problem completely. Even though the noise from the signal was removed, I could still see the mechanical glitter at the edge of all the pulses from the oscilloscope. Is that a possible cause of this problem (my technician told me we can do nothing with this glitter. In other words, we can't remove it)?
Please suggest me how to solve this Error-200141. With this message, I have also attached VI.

    Hi Suksun,
Only had a quick glance at your code, but can you drop the samples to read to 100.
I think what the problem is from what I can make of your code, is that
you have a low frequency counter, that you measure on the rising edge,
however if you don't get a 1000 pulses within 100 seconds, DAQmx will
report an error. So by lowering the number of samples to read you
should be able to get 100 samples in 100 seconds, you should not
overwrite data as the buffer will be sized correctly.
    Hope this help

  • Trying to update channels in real time while controlling Agilent 34970a

    Hello all,
I've gotten such valuable help on these forums and I am hoping that someone will be able to point me in the right direction with this issue. I'm still pretty new to LabVIEW so please bear with me.
I am working with the LabVIEW driver for the Agilent 34970A connected over a GPIB-ENET 100/1000. The device was detected and works just fine. The reason I am writing today is that I am trying to update the channel list in real time. Currently I need to stop the whole process in order to edit the channel list but due to the nature of the tests we will be performing it is important that I can add more channels as I go without interrupting the testing going on.
I've searched the forums and tried modifying the channel string control to "Update value while typing," and "Limit to single line." The motivation behind the latter change was so that I could modify the channel list and use the ENTER key to execute. I've also tried creating a while loop with shift registers but the construction ws so clumsy that it did not work either.
I am pretty sure that the modification should occur right at the string control but cannot be certain since the pint is for it to reinitialize what channels to scan and that occurs further down in the VI. I've attached the VI I am working with; it is an only slightly modified version of the driver's Advanced Scan Example.
    Thank you all in advance,

You may have added a shift register, but you're not actually comparing anything. You need to compare the value of the control to the value of the data coming from the shift register to see if it changed. If so, change the scan list.
If you need to have a delay after changing the scan list, then you should add the delay inside the case structure that calls the VI to reconfigure the scan list. You can use the Time Delay VI to cause the delay to occur after configuring the scan by using the error wires to force execution order.
P.S. Your naming scheme for VIs implies that you are probably not using a source code control system. If so, you would be well served in taking the time to learn about source code controls systems and installing one. It's very easy, and there have been numerous threads in the LabVIEW forum on recommendations of source code control systems.

The devices are not designed for transfer of that kind.  Use Photo Stream as suggested by another poster, or transfer photos to your computer (a good idea anyway since they will be lost if your device needs to be reset), then use iTunes to sync them to the other devices.
