Trying to run a landscape generator in an applet

First off, I'm just getting into Java so bare with me.
I'm wanting to make a Tanks style game in an applet and I need to make the landscape. My question is just the organization of how to run it. Here is how I'm making it.
I have my class Tanx with methods init(), start(), stop(), paint(Graphics g), update(Graphics g), and run(). I also have the class Landscape with a method GenerateLandscape which does the math of storing my landscape to an array and then I have a method PaintMap(Graphics g) which runs through the array and paints the landscape.
Would I create an object of class Landscape? And then call the methods? But where should I call the methods to create the landscape? Inside init()? I only need the landscape to be drawn once at the beginning and init() is there to initialize. I don't think it's right to call the PaintMap(Graphics g) from the init() because the parameters don't work, so should I call it from paint(Graphics g)? But I don't need the landscape to be drawn a bunch of times. I could enclose it in an IF to make it run just once but maybe there's a better way. Is this whole thing fundamentally wrong the way I'm trying to do it? How would you do it? Thanks

ThanksYou need to go back and read about Java Graphics in AWT or in SWING--AWT for Applet and SWING for JApplet. The problem you are trying to highlight is just a lack of understanding on how Java does graphics--when you read through the Tutorial on Graphics again, pay particular attention to where they write graphics to the displaying objects Graphics Context.
Further note: you can generate your landscape 1 time in init(), but you will have to generate it to a more durable object than your display object's Graphics Context--like a BufferedImage. You will understand all of this when you read about Java Graphics.
