TS3683 lost my encrypted backup password

I've lost my "Encrypted Local Backup" password. I can't restore my Ipad... please help me...
Thanking you
Netbugg

It's not stored anywhere, so unless you can remember it or find where you write it down, then you won't be able to restore to that backup. From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946 (which applies to iPads as well as iPhones) :
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

  • Encrypt backup password

    Hello Folks,
I am not very good with forums so please excuse my language.
I have an iPhone 5 which i got unlocked from AT&T and was doing Restore iPhone. I forgot the encrypt backup password. Now my phone is getting restored to last BackUp done on icloud which is from 4 months ago. Please tell me how can I get into my most current backup. I am using the most current ios.
    Thanks for all your input.

If you have an encrypted backup, the only way to use that backup is to remember the password. If you cannot remember the password, you will have to delete that backup and create a new one. If you have already restored the phone, you will only be able to use the latest un-encrypted backup to restore with if you cannot remember the password.

how to recover my encrypted backup password

There's no way to recover a password if you forget. If you are using a Mac and you have enabled Keychain to store your password backup, you can use it.
Otherwise, you can still do backups but to restore from backup you need the password.

  • Encrypt Backup Password Problem

I checked the option to encrpyt the back up using a password. Any password I try cannot be used - I've tried my itunes password and a variety of others - I just keep getting a message saying the password cannot be set. It worked fine until a couple of days ago. Any ideas?

Yeah I just noticed I have the same issue. Google and Bing search doesn't help much either but I did land on this Apple Support page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
    To summarize:
WARNING: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password you can continue to do backups and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you will have to do a full software restore of the device, erasing all data.
But to be honest, I don't recall even setting a password for any kind of encryption backup. Even if I did, I would know since I use a set of passwords for everything... Was there a bug in iTunes since the new update?

Now I wanna backup my iphone again on icloud if I backed up my iphone and need to restore from icloud backup again is it will ask for the same forgotten password ?

    Thanks Brett L,
Thanks for your reply. I'll read this article and I wish it helps. Have a good day too Brett L. Another question please when we backup to itunes its approximately (12 GB my backup) and in restoring apps downloaded back from computer but in icloud its only 5 GB I have so this apps will be downloaded from beginning but with my data right ? Which means in this case it will not difference which backup I do cause in two cases i'll have what i need, is this right ?

  • URGENT! Encrypted backup password recovery on a Mac?

I just upgraded to 5.0 on my iPod 3rd Gen and lost everything except music! I lost all my notes, photos (!!), contacts, apps and everything. I'm literally on the verge of tears here because I had 3 years worth of data in there. I thought I could restore it using backup data BUT I lost the password (i set it up 2+ years ago on a whim, totally my mistake and should have remembered it...) and now whenever it prompts me to enter, I can never get it. I have tried everything but I just cant seem to get it.
I tried using some software like Elcomsoft but it is only avilable for Windows and I have a Macbook Pro. Is there any way around this? Any way I could retreive my backups or crack that password? I have tried everything. Please help!

  • How do u reset my restore backup password?

How do u reset my restore backup password?

    Hello Rissey,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
The encrypted backup password stays unless you want to restore the device as new.
    iOS: Troubleshooting encrypted backups
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5162
You need the backup password to disable backup encryption or to restore from an encrypted backup.
You can keep trying to restore the device from backup until you remember the password. If you're having trouble, try:
    Leaving the password field blank
    Your Apple ID password
Your computer account password, if you have one
Email passwords you may have used
    Your Wi-Fi network password
Website passwords you may have used
A password for hard-disk encryption software, if you use it
    iTunes: About iOS backups
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • How do I retrieve a forgotten password for my encrypted backup?

Ive set a password for my backups on iTunes 10.2.2. and I have forgotten it! There is no "Forgot your password" button anywhere!! How do I get past this crap???!!!

I'm sorry you forgot your password, and have to recreate a backup of your phone.
But encrypted files, and passwords are your responsibility to save.
    Hammeredd wrote:
What idiot came up with a password system which has no failsafe?
There are plenty of systems that do not have failsafe for lost passwords.
My Visa and bank cards do not have a "failsafe" pin number.
Encrypted folders, disk images e.t.c do not have failsafe passwords.
What the encrypted back up does is encrypt your data using a key (the "password") that you supply.
In order to have a "fail safe" as you put it, the key would have to be saved somewhere else.
This then it would have to be stored on your computer.
But would you need it also protected? Yes, otherwise it is a useless password.
They could put it in your keychain, which has a password to protect it.
But what if you forget keychain password?
Where should Apple put a failsafe copy of your keychain password?
How about in another encrypted file, with a password.... what if you forget that password?
    This could go on forever.
...every other system we use has a facility to either email your password to you or have you answer a number of security questions to change it.
Are you suggesting that Apple store all encrypted file passwords on their servers?
I am sure then there would be an uproar over Apple being "Big Brother".
no security system is worth losing all your information, this must be a mistake.
No mistake. This is normal practice.
There is also an option to delete your iPhone if the wrong passcode is put in 10 times.
    I have that.
If someone tries to get into my phone I would rather have all the data deleted.
But then I back up data, and save passwords.
THERE MUST BE A WAY OF RECOVERING THIS BACKUP INFORMATION!!!!
There is not. The data is encrypted.
That's the point, no one can get it; unless they apply and very complicated decryption system and spend a lot of time on it (like the CIA)
otherwise my intention to buy my partner an iphone has just bit the dust. And this one will be going as well.
So because you made a mistake in not reading, and not saving your password?
There is a clear warning when you choose to encrypt your backup.
This really is a case of you not taking responsibility for your own mistake.
    You made a mistake.
Now step up and accept it; and don't make it again.
What you can do in future is create a "note" in your keychain and save your passwords there if you are prone to losing passwords.

  • I forgot to setup a password for my encrypted backup using iTunes

I was trying to back up my iphone4 using encrypted backup, but i forgot to setup a password. Now, i am trying to restore my iphone from this encrypted backup, but i don't know the password. I did not setup a password, is there a default password ?

The backup encryption passcode has nothing to do with locking a user out of their backup.
If the encryption passcode has been forgotten, nothing can be done.  There is no reset for the encryption passcode.
Delete the backup and create a new one.
