Turn on display with LIRC

Hi everyone,
I've been using this forum stealthily for quite some time, but never posted because the questions I had had already been answered. Obviously, today it's not the case
I'm in the process of building an HTPC, running Arch and XBMC. Everything works fine, so I'm down to the little details that have been bugging me. One of them is that I can't turn on the monitor with my remote control (WinFast Y04G0004 in case that matters). I've bound this script to the power key with  irexec :
#!/bin/bash
MONITORSTAT=`xset -display :0 q|grep -c Monitor\ is\ On`
if [ "$MONITORSTAT" -eq "1" ]; then
xset -display :0 dpms force off
elif [ "$MONITORSTAT" -eq "0" ]; then
xset -display :0 dpms force on
fi
exit
The display turns off fine (power saving mode, LED turns orange), then if I hit the key again it turns on (exits power saving mode, LED turns green), but it stays black ; I have to hit a key on the keyboard to see X again.
Thanks in advance for helping me

You were right, it was the screensaver. I had turned any automatic screensaving off, and I can't see why "xset dpms force off" would turn on the screensaver, so I didn't even think of trying that out. But adding "xset -display :0 s off" to the elif part of the script did the job, thank you

  • Turning off display with xset

This is driving me nuts. Currently, my Dell C400's display doesn't shut off when the lid is closed. I put "xset dpms force off" in acpi's handler.sh in the area under button/lid. If I run this command from a terminal, it works fine. But when I close my lid, the display flickers but doesn't turn off.
    In the log, it says:
xset: unable to open display ""
I modified the command to be "xset -display :0 dpms force off", and now the log says:
    button/lid
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
    Xlib: No protocol specified
xset: unable to open display ":0"
What on earth am I doing wrong? Both commands work from a terminal..  :?

Wow, talk about an old thread..
And thanks it works perfectly heh. I ended up putting this in my handler.sh:
    if grep -q open /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state
    then
XAUTHORITY=/home/stonecrest/.Xauthority xset -display :0.0 dpms force on
    else
XAUTHORITY=/home/stonecrest/.Xauthority xset -display :0.0 dpms force off

    Can anyone help ?
    please?

WHow long have you left it to charge?  Have you tried resetting it after a short period of time to see if that can help jumpstart the charging process? To do this, press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • I wanted to keep my locked screen display with the time and date from turning off is that possible

So I enjoy my locked screen display with my chosen picture because it has the time displayed nice and big and its a cool nightlight but the locked screen display/wallpaper/time with date always goes black after 13ish seconds of locking it is there no way to let the locked screen stay on while charging? because it is awesome if it could stay on as a nightlight also so i dont have to press the lock button to see what time because the normal display is ugly am I just being super picky or am I not the only one who agrees or maybe it does exist im just stupid please respond when you can also thanks for reading much appreciated.

Again, there is NO WAY to do what you asked: display the time constantly.
I have a clock app that displays the time constantly on my iPad. I use it as a bedside clock. Many clock apps have the ability to disable autolock just within that app. Whether there is one that lets you pick your own background, I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if there were, based on the number of clock apps out there. While what I'm suggestion is not precisely what the OP asked (display the system lock screen), it seems it might be a possible workaround.

  • Hi - How do I connect an HDTV as a second monitor to Thunderbolt display with macbook pro in clamshell mode?

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt Display with the built in Thunderbolt cable. I want to then connect an HDTV via the Thunderbolt port at the back of the Thunderbolt display. I already had a  cable that I thought would work which turns out to be a MiniDisplay port to HDMI cable and therefore not compatible with Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort not being the same technology although it uses the same port - although I'm not an expert !!) So far a web search has provided me with the only solution being using a Thunderbolt dock or storage that has multiple Thunderbolt ports and then  using that to daisychain inbetween the Thunderbolt Diplay and the HDTV. The cheapest solution I can find for this would be about £250. Surely not ??!!!!
Many thanks for any comments - Nik

You could also use aThunderbolt dock with HDMI, such as:

  • Connect the powerbook 15"-Display with a new G5 dual and a ACD?

    hi
i wonder if i could connect the pb 15" display with a new G5 dual and turn the pb off, only the display on?
    that would be fun.
i am working with a pb 15" and a ACD 20" with Photoshop mainly.
the 15" is the palettes‘ server and the ACD is the main working screen where i retouch my pics.
so if i buy a G5 dual now, i would have to buy a ACD30" for example to use one display for all the Photoshop Palettes and couldn use the pb 15" anymore?
any other less awkward solutions i am not aware of maybe?
    thanks"

I'm pretty sure that you can't use a PowerBook for it's display only. You already know, of course, that you can use the PowerBook, as a computer, with an external monitor, with or without the PB's own display running, but so far as I know you cannot use a PB solely for its display.
So, if you bought a G5 dual now, and bought an ACD 30", you could use both your ACD's with your new G5 dual, the 20" and the 30" , but your PowerBook would have to watch the proceedings from the sidelines.

  • My iCloud Account is displayed with an old ID. How do I change this? Additionally, I have forgotten the password associated with the old ID.

When I tap the Settings icon on my iPhone 4S Home screen, and then scroll down and tap “iCloud”, my iCloud Account is displayed with a previous email address which is no longer in use.
When I scroll down and tap “Delete Account”, I’m prompted for the Apple ID password associated with the old email address to turn off Find My iPhone?
I do not know the password for this old Account, and the email is no longer accessible so I'm unable to delete the account.
Therefore, how can I match my iPhone iCloud Account to my MacBook Pro iCloud Account which uses my new email address and password?

I have the same problem , can anyone help??

  • 23" Studio Display with Power Book (17")

I am considering running a 23" studio display with my 17" PB. From perusing the discussions here it seems this is entirely possible (although there is some debate over keeping the clam shell closed during operation...). As a photographer and heavy user of Photoshop my concern is this: will I get full perfromance from the 23" in this configuration...will it perform to the extent that it would if connected to a current desktop Mac. Also....will adding a studio display to the PB diminish its performance in any way, either with its own screen on or off? For your information, the PB is relatively new; purchased within the last year. Also, if there are any Photoshop users out there: is it possible to set up the smaller 17" screen for things like palettes etc., and reserve the 23" for the image being edited, only? Thanks.
    PowerBook 17" & G4 Quicksilver desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    PowerBook 17" & G4 Quicksilver desktop

It's plug and play, so that's not an issue.
The debate about running the clamshell closed is so that, if the extra desktop space is not required, there is no point "stressing" the video ram and videocard and cpu by having the other display running - all resources can turn to the external display.
As for extending the desktop, yes you can do that with Photoshop - you have the space of the PB and the new display, entirely up to you what you put where - just drag across.
Performance wise, I don't imagine that Photoshop would cause as many difficulties as say video editing might, and I've not come across anyone saying that they have had performance issues from running the extra display - you may get some extra heat as the processor is taxed though.
If in doubt, you could test at an Apple Store or reseller.
Also, you might find getting extra ram a useful upgrade.
Hope that helps, best of luck.

  • Turning off display in Mavericks

I have a retina MBP. I am used to hitting shift-control-power to *just* turn the display off and lock the computer -- *without* putting it to sleep -- when I leave my desk.
This still works in Mavericks 10.9, but it creates an annoying pop sound (Mac error sound effect) which never used to happen in 10.8 and previous versions.
I'm told that just hitting the power key for a second now does the same thing, but in my experience it doesn't. It sleeps the computer rather than just shutting off the display. I want the computer to still operate on the network and on full power.
Does anyone have a new key combination that just turns off the display but doesn't pop or beep?
I know I can dim the display brightness but (1) this doesn't turn off the pixels, just the backlight, and that's not what I'm looking for, and (2) this takes too long versus just a single action like shift-control-power.
    Thanks.

    Hi Fred,
I also organise by year, month, day/shoot. Within the day/shoot, everything is logically organised with RAW automatically downloaded into its own subfolder using DownloaderPro. I use Pixort to further split the RAW images into 4 subfolders depending on whether I want to work on the image immediately, later, or never. Developed images then go into the parent day/shoot folder for easy viewing. It sounds a bit complicated but everything is in the context of one shoot. I can very quickly identify and work with the high-payback images. I can very easily find and view the developed images using fast and simple tools like the file browser or FastStone.
Now LR is proving to be very useful at converting my RAW images, I'm impressed enough to invest some more time exploring it. But I've learned not to rely longer or even medium term on any one vendor or piece of software. And I'm certainly not going to change a proven approach simply because of an inflexible tool!
So come on Adobe, this can't be that difficult. How about adding the option so we can choose whether or not to view subfolder contents.
    Cheers,
    Mark

  • Turn off display "firmly"

Don't know how else to describe it. I have a 20" Aluminum iMac, and I run several utilities that go 24/7. The Mac is in the same room I sleep in and I use a "hot corner" to disable the display, but I find that a vibration can often move the mouse just enough to turn the display back on, and I often wake up to find the display back on. Also, some programs like iDVD force the display back on every 5 seconds or so. Is there a way to "lock" the display so that running programs don't affect it, and it requires a keypress or a mouse click (not a mouse movement) to turn it back on?

Same problem with applications / running processes waking the display. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1323073 for more description of the problem. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this or is a bug fix needed?

  • Can't Turn Off Display Completely in XP

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro screen does not turn off after idling in XP. I'd to be able to turn the display off (even manually) without putting the computer completely to sleep.
When I dim the screen all the way down in XP, the lowest setting is not off, just very dim. I can put the computer to sleep by closing the lid, but I'd like to have programs still running in the background with the screen completely off.
In OSX it's fine, the display turns off properly when dimming or after idling.
The closest solution I've found in XP is to set a black screensaver, but this is not the same as the display being turned off.

  • 9300 turns off even with full battery

Hi, I hope somebody can help me... Long story here...
I bought my 9300 in Istanbul, where I live. I have a Vodafone Turkey simcard and Vodafone Spain simcard. I swithch simcards when I travel, works beautifully, even with email and whatsapp.
Last year I had an issue whith battery draining in less than 2 hours every morning. After reinstalling software and getting rid of all apps (incl whatsapp) it eventually came back to life and the battery started lasting for 2 days again. I must say I did the upgrade of OS while in Spain (I don't know if it makes a difference...)
A couple of weeks ago (now I am in Istanbul), same thing happened. It is just that this time the battery doesn't drain, the phone just shuts itself off, normally in the middle of a conversation or trying to send a whatsapp, and with full battery.
The first few times, taking the battery off and sim and putting it back in did the trick. After a couple of times, however, it is not working anymore. This it what happens:
    BB turns off completely.
If I try to turn on, it does not even try.
If I remove battery and simcard, it restarts and is ok in all processes but when it is looking for network signal, it turns off again.
I remove battery and simcard second time, and it does not go through the software verification, it turns off again.
After this, the only way to bring it back to life is to plug it in, and then it restarts and with full battery!! I unplug and I can use email for the next 3-4 hours, until some hours later, same problem all again. I carry my charger everywhere!
I have the latest OS available, and I have got rid of whatsapp, which last year I think it was the beginning of the solving of the problem (whatsapp releases new versions constantly, I think upgrading it did the trick. Or was it just chance?), but it is still not helping so far.
My husband has the same model, never a problem. We exchanged the batteries, no luck either.
    Any ideas?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
There are many things already posted in this thread...have you yet read and attempted any of them?
You also may want to attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.
If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
But, if the behavior continues, you may need to consider more drastic actions -- e.g., WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, "bare bones" OS loading, etc.
Do also keep in mind that, if the problem is at a hardware level, then no amount of self-diagnosis nor internet-distance recommendations will be of any use...only in-hand evaluation by a qualified hardware technician can properly diagnose a hardware problem.
Good luck and let us know!

'Music' displays but won't play. Settings appear correct and iPhone (3G)  is selected for output.  Startup screen intermittently displays with the lower pause/play volume bar for no clear reason..... developed at the same time as play failure.  Ideas????

    Thank you for the replies.
Appearane of 'Music' functions (I>>   > II   <<I,   plus volume slider)  on the lock/log in screen (when first turning on the iPhone) thus far seems without pattern, i.e. regardless of which if any applications are up in the background, and indeed even when all have been quit.
All visual aspects of 'Music' appear normal after launch including the title scroll across the top in vertical mode. However, while pressing play (>) converts the play (>) icon to pause (II), selected song does not play and the elapsed time bar (upper end between the track count and the repeat/shuffle icons) remains stationary at 0:00 or at any point to which it is dragged.  When using home sharing this same problem persists regardless of what output is selected.
Hope that may prompt a thought somewhere.
