TV@ Plus, what video capture settings to use?

I have a TV@ Plus and am unsure what video capture settings to use. I've had it for several months and solved my audio problems and need to know what Video Input Format, Capture Format (Profile), Capture - Size, Quality, Bit Rate and Audio Format settings to use. Should I use the same settings for all input sources or do I use different settings for CATV and S-video inputs? It seems to be OK with my current settings as far as capture and playback goes, I'm OK on the hardware part but with tech detatails I'm a bit .
I will be using it to capture from CATV, DVD and VCR input sources for later recording to DVD's. I use a GoDVD! CT-2 connected to the S-video input for recording Macrovision protected media to the HDD.
My computer sound is monitor mounted stereo speakers.

I already had transferred and converted some of my old VHS and VCD movie collections into DVDs (using Composite Input).
The higher the bit rate the better quality video output you will have - but bigger file size.
To give you an example:
A 2 hour video captured on MPEG set at 4000/bps will be translated it to 3.58GB. More than enough to be written on a 4.7 DVD.
For audio bit rates, you can choose from 128/bps to 224/bps. As for me I set it to 224/bps. Again the bigger bit rates the better audio output. And don't forget to slide up the audio record level to 100%. That will give you a better and clearer recorded audio output.

What video capture setting to use???

I'm using FCP 4.1 for some non-broadcast, DVD applications. I'm looking for BetaSP quality output but have no idea what setting will give me good image quality without slowing my Mac. Since I use a Kona LS card, there seem to be almost an endless amount of options. Particularly between 8 bit and 10 bit. I've read about the differences but there are just so many options I don't know where to begin. Are there any standard suggestions for a jumping off point? Thanks.

Holey Moley, I've got one of those machines. Complete with the scsi card and the internal scsi raid. And a cinewave card. Anybody want a cinewave card?
Try an 8bit- that's about what SP gives you, but if you've got a graphic- intensive show, you might be better served at 10-bit.

Video capture card to use with WebEx

Hi all,
could someone share a list of compatible video capture cards to use in a PC in a WebEx session?
The ideia is to use an external camera (instead of a web cam) to capture the video and I would like to know if this input will be sent as video (if WebEx will recognize the capture card as an input).

thanks for the advice and links... I was having trouble making sense of barefoot.
I have heard that a card that works well for gaming will not necessarily work well for CAD based programs like Maya. can any one confirm or deny this? I can use the software for things like this but I am pretty low on the food chain when it comes to hardware issues.
It is possible I being too picky wanting an affordable card that:
a.) Has been tested successfully by Autodesk with Maya
and
b.)is available to be installed in a Mac Pro

What video codecs can be used with Premiere CS4? Or are there to many to list? I'm looking for a solution to import a .AVI file created with a H.264 codec.

PrPro can work with so very many, but certainly not all. Some, like DivX will work for Export, but I have never gotten good Import of that material - always something wrong somewhere.
For H.264, there are three very popular versions: Apple, Lead and MainConcept. The Apple version installs with later versions of QT Player, the other two are available, and many users like them better. They solve some H.264 problems, mainly with Export.

You can tell there is a certain effect that they applied to it. It could be a camera tracker or a camera smoother. I just plainly don't know at this point. I would like to "try" and recreate it if I could with your help.

That's simple parralax animation to give the illusion that the camera would be very close to the talent while keeping the background in frame. Nothing magic there, given that all the backgrounds are artificial and have been added in post, anyway.

Hi there. I'm going to purchase a video capture card so I can feed my camcorder, vcr etc. into my iBook. I want to know what people are using and how they like it. DO you use firewire or USB? etc.

iMovie (and Final Cut) expect video via FireWire.
If you select a video over USB solution you will need to find a Mac compatible software application to read and recognize it.

What video setting should I use?

I'm converting videos using Aieesoft, and am wondering what video setting is the best to use for playing on an ipad 4? I don't want the files to be huge. If I can I'd like to keep them under 1 gig each.

First, decde how you are going to deliver this production to your client. Then tell us what that delivery medium will be. Then we'll have some advice for you.
See the section in the FCP manual on using still images. You need to understand that in video there are only pixels, no dots per inch or lines per inch. Those terms are meaningless in video. You wil sand at a size in raw pixels that is only slightly larger than your delivery format.

Has anyone used Hauppauge ImpactVCB Video Capture Board with Flash Media Live encoder and have success?

George. You probably don't have many options with the Epix board. However, if your Epix software enables you to save files to disk, then you can open them from LabVIEW and process them with Vision or Vision Builder.
Another option is to contact Graftek (www.graftek.com) or ImageMill (www.imagemill-tech.com). They have created drivers for third party image acquisition boards in the past and they may have one for your Epix board.
A third option, of course, is to upgrade your Epix board to an NI IMAQ board. Your sales contact within NI may even be able to give you a discount on the trade in, but I can't guarantee it.

Onlilne HDCAM edit - what sequence/capture settings?

Good Afternoon,
We have completed the offline edit of a 3 minute video that was shot on HDCAM,then edited using low-res Photo JPEG.
Using Media Manager we are planning to create a duplicate sequence to use to capture and connect the clips to the HDCAM footage.
What sequence settings do we use and what capture preset do we use? The manual isn't very clear on this.

That's the card...not the drives. What DRIVES do you have? What DRIVE ARRAY? The card will be fast enough...if the raid array attached to it is fast enough.

What fcp export settings to use for bluray DVD

I am editing a huge wedding and have to put chapters and full wedding onto a bluray dvd. What export settings could I use to compress videos a bit so they fit on a bluray without losing a lot of quality?

You have to export to QuickTime Movie, not QuickTime Conversion. You don't want to force any recompression on the video; it will only cause problemsin Toast.
If you want to save time & disk space, UNcheck the option called 'Make movie self-contained' when you export to QT Movie. As long as your Blu-ray authoring tool (eg Toast) is on the same Mac as FCE, you can use the QT reference movie produced this way as input to your Blu-ray authoring app, same as you would a self-contained QT movie.
It is important, however, that you make sure to do Sequence > Render All > Both and Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown before exporting your video from FCE.

What quicktime movie settings for use in Logic

Hi, I'm working on a 50 track mix of a live gig which was also filmed and I have to work to picture. I was advised to ask the video editor to give me the following:
Quicktime Sorenson codec (or Sorenson3). Limit data rate to 500 kbps, 320 x 240.
But, working with this quality of movie makes it hard to really see if all my audio is in sync especially when the lighting is low in certain shots. It's too pixelated if I try to blow it up to see better. The editor is in France and he has to upload the files etc and I want to get better quality from him but I need to know what the highest quality movie I can run with my set up without wasting the editors time by outputting and uploading something which Logic won't work with. Anybody got any ideas. There's nothing in the manual that I can see that discusses Quicktime resolution/quality.

Using Quicktime Pro, convert your movie to PhotoJPEG format (.mov), and use that version in Logic for best sync and small filesize.

What video filter do I use

Hello, I just can't seem to find the correct filter I need for this effect. Basically all I want to do is create a mask that when I pan over a still image or even a video that part that goes over the action safe lines won't be seen. If I were to screen the project on a standard TV ( I guess want you would call 4:3) everything is cool. But if the project is shown on a widescreen display you see the part that is going over the action safe boundary as well. So what I would like to do is create a mask/cutout that lays on top of the video so you only see things moving inside of the cutout. Hope I made myself clear on what I'm trying to do.

Well after re-reading my post I forgot one important fact which I hope will make it clear. I am scaling the image so that is is oversized so the image is also out of the action safe area. Now if I were to keyframe the clip so that the image moves left to right and goes over the action safe boundary on the left you see it on a widescreen display monitor. I could go in and use the crop tool so it doesn't go outside the action safe area on the left but that is only good for that one frame when the clip continues it goes outside of the crop and is viewable on a widescreen. All this is a mute point when watching it on a regular 4:3 screen. For instance if you have watched a Ken Burns documentary on a widescreen the black borders (not sure if this is a letter box) constrain the picture to be inside of the black border even though the image is moving because of a pan or a zoom in effect. Hope that helps clarify things a bit. Again basically all I want to do in make a constant border around my image/video so no matter how I scale, pan or whatever on the clip you can only see what is inside of the border.

What PS file settings are used for still images for FCE?

I have images to use/create for the titles and transitions in my first FCE4 project. Using Photoshop CS6, the preset for File > New > Film & Video has the prest size and pixel aspect ratio selections. I thought to use this with HDV 1080p/29.97 and HDV1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33) for any images I need for the project.
Most discussions I see only refer to the pixel size reference for HD image sizes, but nothing addressing the pixel aspect ratio setting for the image. Are these settings ignored in PS and handled in FCE only? Or does it make better quality images to get this "right" in PS when creating the still image?

I'm not quite sure I understand your question. In an ideal world, the graphic material you build in PS should match the sequence settings you intend to edit them into - so, if for no other reason, it reduces the amount of reformatting FCE has to do when rendering them.
But frequently you want to build graphics larger than the frame size of the sequence so that you can re-size and reposition the graphic within FCE without losing quality.
The apparent pixel aspect ratio of your graphic can be controlled with FCE by editing the graphic to the timeline, double clicking on the clip in the timeline, and when that timeline clip opens in the viewer, click on the motion tab and adjust the Aspect Ratio Paddle (this is the correction for a 1920 x1080 square pixel clip being placed into an HDV 1440 x 1080 timeline):
In Photoshop, you can change the way your work is displayed by going to the menu View > Pixel Aspect Ratio:

What PDF export settings to use for highest possible resolution printing?

I use indesign to create a roughly 68-page marketing booklet. The document is landscape and setup to print on 8.5" x 11" as a landscape book with facing-pages. I upload a PDF to a professional printing company to print a full bleed booklet. The book usually includes roughly 15, full-page, high resolution images as well as numerous other high resolution images throughout so it is important that the resolution is as high as possible and the images come out clean when printed.
On my old computer, I had a custom PDF export preset that I used to produced hi-res, print quality pdf's that were approximately 528MB in size. I recently got a new computer and I lost that old Preset... Now, when I use the "high quality print" default setting, the file size is about 74MB, much lower than what the documents used to be. I have played around with some of the settings, but I still cannot get the files to come out near as large as they used to be.
Is this an Indesign doument setup issue, or an export issue? What settings should I use in order to produce the largest, highest-quality, highest-resolution PDF possible?

The size in mb is pretty much irrelevant and is going to vary with the number of pages and the type and quantity of graphical content.
The HQ Print preset downsamples raster art to 300 ppi if it's over 450, and uses jpeg compression to reduce file size. This is usually more than adequate for commercial printing. For fine art printed at a 200 lpi screen you might want to change the downsampling to 350 or 400 ppi and use zip compression (lossless) or no compression at all. I suspect your custom preset used no compression, and might not even have downsampled, but there's no advantage to sending more image data than the RIP needs to process the image.
