Two part AIR apps

Im relitivley new to using AIR.
Currently using the latest Free SDK and our HTML/JS app.
Primary use for our app is to allow multi download/uploads into our web editor.
The profile is 'extendedDesktop' as we need to execute a desktop app from within.
The issue that we have is because we are going to use this app within our company we needed to package it as EXE due to the 'extendedDesktop' profile, users dont have admin privs so they cant install it. This can cause an issue when trying to roll our an update in realtime without having to MSI and roll it out with GPO or an admin person go around and install it.
I have thought of a diffrent way around this but dont know if it is possable.
Can one AIR app speak to another and pass params?
My idea behind this is we would create two AIR apps:
- a 'Desktop Enabler' which is kept very very simple and installed by an admin, this would not realy change and only handles tasks that need the 'extendedDesktop' profile, this could take params from the main app and execute as required the desktop apps
- the second would be the main app package, this would handle all the other tasks that dont need 'extendedDesktop', we could then install this as a .air package without admin privs localy in the user profile and update it as required.

Of course with different icons and interface, the new interface has a sliding separator style to show difference between edited and original photos. I meant I have the same issue as you.

• AIR app not running on Citrix

We have delivered an AIR app to a client, and they are trying to run it on a Citrix XenApp terminal server. Part of the app makes use of the AIR browser and sessions. When the Citrix user is of sufficient privilidge (windows user), the app runs fine. When they attempt run the AIR app as an anonymous citrix user, it fails. The user cannot login to a page (presented inside the AIR browser). Any ideas?
This discussion (http://forums.adobe.com/message/208488#208488) says that the AIR browser stores cookies and cache in the "Temporary Internet Files" directory, like IE does. Is this true? If the Citrix user did not have permission to write to that directory, could that cause problems? Does the AIR browser need to be able to write anything to the file system? Will the AIR browser try to store session cookies on the filesystem, or do they just stay in memory? I have to assume that this Citirx guest user has no file system priviledges, so we may need to loosen that to get the app to work. Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bryan

Did you test in the Simulator for 2.1?
I tested it in the Simulator for 2.1 and it works fine.
HOWEVER - my app doesn't work in in 2.1 for various people either. (Two emailed reports, which means probably a lot more are getting hit by this and not emailing)
And I really don't use any undocumented APIs. I do set a transform on a view, however.
My guess is they fixed a bug to do with transforms and views, which broke my App in 2.1. Sadly, this fix doesn't seem to be on the Simulator.
So I can't verify unless I update my iPod Touch to 2.1 .. which I can't do because iTunes says my version is apparently up to date for 2.0.
Crazy. Gotta find a way to get 2.1 on my iPod touch. Any suggestions?

• How to listen for key press when air app does not have focus

Hi,
I am developing a application in air and part of the functionality I need is the ability for the app to listen for when a specific key is pressed, even when the air app does not have focus.
Is there support for this for windows or mac? If not, how might this be accomplished? ANE?

Ok Mr. Smartass...Ok
I'm building a browser that is always open, and when
a user presses Ctrl+F1 (notice, just those two keys,
I don't care what else they press...) the browser
will open up. That way, you don't have to wait for it
to load all the time.You have two ideas here. One is having a universal key map that always gets ctrl-f1 sent to your app. The other is a program that is constantly running so that you don't have to wait for it to open up. The former is not possible (and this is a good thing) As warneria and I have been saying, it is bad design for an app to try to force an OS to implement this kind of feature.
If you're not going to help please don't post at all;
it's a waste of time for both you, me, and anyone
else who may need help on the same subject. Why wouldBelieve it or not, I am helping you.

• Is there a way to work with two or more app at the same time on iPhone or iPad

Is there a way to work with two or more app at the same time on iPhone or iPad?

What i am attempting to achieve is to work with at least two app at the same time. For example: select any picture from my albums to attach them in an email. Another example is get data from an app to use it with the calc app. And there are more exaples for it. And for sure I need support for an iPad air. I mencioned the other tablet just to try to be a bit clearer.

• How to create a more general install package for an AIR app?

Hi,
I have been using the ADT to compile an exe of my AIR app along with some other files I want to distribute. Problem is, I would like to do more general install actions (e.g. copy a bunch of files to the users Documents directory, copy a file to the local store, install fonts etc). Right now I achieve some of these by copying stuff from the application directory on the first run, but that is rather kludgy. Currently I am looking at using InstallShield or InstallAnywhere to do what I want out of the can, but I thought I'd see if anyone has some more AIR-friendly suggestions...
Thanks!

In my case I managed to work around the issues we were having by doing a configuration pass on the first run of the app. That means I had to basically put all the data I needed in my assets directory using the ADT compiler, then determine if it is a first run as follows:
var locationPrefsObj:SharedObject = SharedObject.getLocal("PrefsObj");
if ( !locationPrefsObj.data.hasOwnProperty("appCreatedDate")
|| ( locationPrefsObj.data.appCreatedDate != File.applicationDirectory.creationDate.toString() ) )
firstRun();
else {
initConfig();
// initialize an existing config
The firstRun function will obviously be very bespoke, but you need to set the SharedObject at the end of it to make sure it doesn't get called every time.
// this function is only run straight after an install
private function firstRun():void {
var success:Boolean = false;
// do your first run stuff here and mark success=true if you are happy
if ( success ) {
// set the appCreatedDate - then a future install can identify dirt left by the previous install
var locationPrefsObj:SharedObject = SharedObject.getLocal("PrefsObj");
locationPrefsObj.data.appCreatedDate = File.applicationDirectory.creationDate.toString();
locationPrefsObj.flush();
Other gotchas I hit:
(1) You can copy things from the assets folder no problem, but to move or delete anything (so as not to leave lots of extra stuff hanging around), you need to (a) run with administrator privileges on Vista and w7 (the elevation happens automatically if you leave the "Run after install" box checked on an ADT install), and (b) work around the Flash security model that says you can't delete anything from a subdirectory of Program Files under any circumstances. I got around this by something like:
// delete a file
new File(File.applicationDirectory.resolvePath("assets/fileToBeDeleted").nativePath).deleteFi le();
It's a bit nasty as it violates the security model, but until ADT lets you put stuff in two install locations I can't see another way to clean up the install properly.
(2) I tried to install fonts (using VB and other stuff), but it is a real mess - the models in all different flavours of Windows seem to be different. I gave up as our software could get around it another way ...
Hope that helps!

• Example working Flex AIR app for Android?

I'm having trouble getting even the most basic AIR app working on Android. Here is the code:

<s:WindowedApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" xmlns:local="*"
width="600" height="600">
<fx:Declarations>

</fx:Declarations>
<mx:Label text="Hello World"/>
</s:WindowedApplication>
It works fine running on Windows in Flash Builder, obviously it's pretty simple. Here are the commands I use to put it on a Samsung Galaxy Tab with Android 2.2.
C:\Users\Ryan\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Test2\bin-release>adt -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore C:\Users\Ryan\STG-Android.pfx Test2.air Test2-app.xml Test2.swf
password:
C:\Users\Ryan\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Test2\bin-release>adt -package -target apk -storetype pkcs12 -keystore C:\Users\Ryan\STG-Android.pfx Test2.apk Test2-app.xml Test2.swf
password:
test
C:\Users\Ryan\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Test2\bin-release>adb install -r Test2.apk
2286 KB/s (419172 bytes in 0.179s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/Test2.apk
Success
A Test2 app icon shows up on my Galaxy Tab under Applications but when I run the app I just see a plain white screen, I don't see the words "Hello World". Any ideas? Does anyone have an example Flex AIR app that works on Android and can post the code so I can try it on my Galaxy Tab? I know AIR is installed correctly on my Galaxy because I installed an AIR app called South Park Avatar Creator that I got from the market and it works fine.
Thanks,
Ryan

• Unable to connect with Kuler Air app and Extension

Hi,
I am unable to connect Adobe Kuler Desktop(Air app). I can't login through the app. Only thing I can see when I launch the app is the RGB rotating, even after an hour.
I tried reinstalling the app two three time. No way. same issue persits.
I tried to connect through a proxy server enable and through a direct connection. same issue.
Not only the Kuler Desktop, but the plugin also has the same problem.
Please help.

Hello, I was getting the same RGB loading... issue, however I was able to Sign In at the bottom with my Adobe ID, and then themes started loading when I selected from the dropdown (e.g., Most Popular). It's a little slow, but seems to be working.

• Embedding swf files in AIR app for ios

Hi,
After going through a lot of articles already available, I found answers with varying views on the following questions:-
1) Can we embed swf files using the embed tag in air app for ios, with symbols exported ?
Something like [Embed(source="someSWF",symbol="exportedSymbol")]
and also something like [Embed(source="someSWF")].
From what I understand, one can't embed swf's with actionscript byte code in them. So exporting symbols actually creates class linkages which leads to creation of abc. But I'm unsure on this because some sources say otherwise.
2) Can we embed swf files using embed tag in air app for ios, without symbols exported ?
Something like [Embed(source="someSWF")]
and also something like [Embed(source="someSWF" mimeType = "application/octet-stream")]
I read somewhere else, that you can actually embed symbols separately by providing symbol tag in embed tag but not entire swf (which leads to uncompiled actionscript error) but not sure about this as this is contradictory to finding #1.
3) If #2 is possible, then do embedding two different swfs with same symbol names would cause a conflict and result in #3747 error ?
Please note I am not asking about the Loader class here but using the Embed keyword for embedding swfs.
Also do the results differ with AIRSDK 3.8 and 3.9 and using different swf-version in compiler flags ?
In our application we started getting error #3747 in class creation of one of the embedded swfs (like new EmbeddedClass()) when we changed from swf-version 17 to 21 using AIRSDK 3.8. So was this error not there earlier or it was there but swf-version was suppressing it ?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks!

I am fairly sure that the answer to your questions is: “no”.
For embed to work the AIR app would have to be working in interpreter mode, and that can work for local testing, but can’t work for submitting apps. An easy change for you to do would be to use SWCs instead of Embed. Other than that you’re looking at Loader, but also a tricky command line build of the app.

• Displaying PDF content in Android Air app - how?

Hi, I'm fairly new to developing Air apps for mobile devices. I'm looking to have my app display PDF files and can't find a dfinitive way of doing it. I've read that using the StageWebView would be the way to do it.
Here's the relevant part of my code (PDF path changed):
if (StageWebView.isSupported)
currentState = "normal";
webView.stage = stage;
webView.viewPort = new Rectangle(20, 100, 450, 450);
webView.addEventListener(LocationChangeEvent.LOCATION_CHANGE,onURLChange);
webView.loadURL("http://path.to.my.pdf");
addEventListener(ViewNavigatorEvent.REMOVING,onRemove);
else {
currentState = "unsupported";
lblSupport.text = "StageWebView feature not supported";
Its working up until the point of actually displaying the PDF content, I get nothing (blank screen).
I'm using Flash Builder 4.5 / Air 2.6 and debugging on a Motorola Xoom tablet. Adobe Reader is installed on the device.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Solved.
For some reason I couldn't access the HTMLLoader object outside of the function that initialised it, despite the fact that I was listening for EVENT_COMPLETE.
Basically, to get round this bug, just put all the initialise and load code in the same function and you should be laughing.

• Embedding swf into HTML+JS AIR app

Hi
I'm trying to embed swf into HTML+JS AIR app with no luck.
First, I created flash library with this class in default package.
package
import mx.controls.Alert;
public class Utilities
public function Utilities()
//asdfasdf
Alert.show("asdasd","");
Then I compiled the project with Flash Builder and got library.swc as result. Then I extracted swf file.
After this is added required code into my html:

Then after I run application, I get error that result of expression is not constructor, function etc.
Could you help me please? Thanks in advance.
Here is sample code:
http://depositfiles.com/files/jztpnlb3a

No. I mean that the Flex framework makes certain assumptions about the environment it is running in -- like having a stage to work with. The Alert function, for example, works by creating a sprite and adding it to the Flash display list. Since your embedded SWF is not on a stage, there's no way for it to work.
You can can possibly use certain non-visual parts of the framework, such as the rpc package, but I can't guarantee it.

• Drag&Drop from Browser to AIR App

Hi there,
i wonder how it is possible to drag an element from a flash
page in my browser to an air app on my desktop. i've seen the
showcase
of the nickelodeon jigsaw game on adobe.com, but the videos
looks kind of post-processed.
do you have any tipps on how to enable flash/AIR
drag&drop trespassing the browser borders?

Thanks for your answer.
i already tried something like this, but i still have
problems with getting the newly created entity dragged. how can I
position the new entity from my air app directly under the mouse
cursor? so far i didn't find any screen mouse position functions or
properties. If I use a fullscreen, always on top window with mostly
transparent parts, I can't capture the mouse position using
MOUSE_MOVE all the time. Besides, how can I change the focus from
my browser to my air app? I already tried calling
nativeWindow.orderToFront() and nativeWindow.activate(), but the
focus doesn't change when I click the entity in my flash page.
Maybe somebody knows an answer to this ...

• Embedding local .swf file in AIR app

Hi all,
I want to include a small Google Maps .swf file as part of my overall HTML based AIR application and I was wondering whether anyone here has had any success in achieving this. Currently, my set up looks like this:
AIR xml file:

<application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/1.5">

<filename>gmaps</filename>
<version>0.1</version>
<initialWindow>

gmaps2

gmaps2.html

<systemChrome>standard</systemChrome>
<transparent>false</transparent>
<visible>true</visible>

<x>20</x>
<y>20</y>
<minimizable>true</minimizable>
<maximizable>true</maximizable>
<minSize>850 636</minSize>
<resizable>true</resizable>
</initialWindow>
My gmaps2.html file:

GMAPS

My GMapsController.mxml file:

<mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
<maps:Map xmlns:maps="com.google.maps.*" id="map" mapevent_mapready="onMapReady(event)" width="100%" height="100%"
url="http://my.domain.com" key="CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC"/>
<mx:Script>

import com.google.maps.LatLng;
import com.google.maps.Map;
import com.google.maps.MapEvent;
import com.google.maps.MapType;
private function onMapReady(event:Event):void {
this.map.setCenter(new LatLng(40.736072,-73.992062), 14, MapType.NORMAL_MAP_TYPE);
public function setLocation(lat:Number, long:Number):void {

</mx:Script>
</mx:WindowedApplication>
When I open my air app, I don't get any error messages and it appears that the swf is not loaded at all.
When I switch my AIR .xml file to point to the GMapsController.swf file instead of the gmaps2.html file, it works perfectly - this gives me the impression that there's either:
1. Something wrong with including a WindowedApplication in a HTML file.
2. Something wrong with including a local .swf file in HTML based application.
I've tried referencing the .swf file in the html file from a remote server with the following:

but no luck with that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sean

Brandon,
Thanks for the link - I wasn't aware about the HTML Loader class and how it relates to loading Google Maps. I'm not using the HTML loader class though, so I'm not sure how it relates to the issue I'm having.
I'm currently following the advice outlined at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AIR/1.5/devappshtml/WS4B441C24-BAE3-4110-91FD-A4E5EEFB2467.htm l where the SWF object is loaded through JavaScript, but I haven't had any luck with it yet. I'm pretty new to Flex/Flash/AIR applications - I'm starting to think it could be something simple wrong with my .mxml file:

<mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
<maps:Map xmlns:maps="com.google.maps.*" id="map" mapevent_mapready="onMapReady(event)" width="100%" height="100%"
url="http://my.server.com" key="CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC"/>
<mx:Script>

import com.google.maps.LatLng;
import com.google.maps.Map;
import com.google.maps.MapEvent;
import com.google.maps.MapType;
private function onMapReady(event:Event):void {
this.map.setCenter(new LatLng(40.736072,-73.992062), 14, MapType.NORMAL_MAP_TYPE);
public function setLocation(lat:Number, long:Number):void {

</mx:Script>
</mx:WindowedApplication>
I've tried creating a different .mxml file from the code outlined http://www.mikechambers.com/blog/2007/11/07/air-example-native-drag-and-drop/ (just as an example), just to make sure that the problems I'm having are not related in any way to the Google Maps API for Flash. Even with this second .mxml file, I still haven't had any luck in getting the swf content to load locally from the HTML file. However, if I set the content element in the AIR .xml file to look like this:

DragAndDropExample.swf

... it works as expected.
So, this has started me thinking that you cannot include a .swf file which has a base tag of WindowedApplication in a HTML based application? Can anyone confirm that this thinking is correct?
Has anyone here managed to load .swf content in a HTML based application using the code outlined at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AIR/1.5/devappshtml/WS4B441C24-BAE3-4110-91FD-A4E5EEFB2467.htm l?
Thanks

• Having trouble with the Air/app crashing after 3 or so hours on Win 7.

Heya.
I have been battling with this issue for a few days now, trying to debug what might be the root cause. The application is a reaction game with organic creatures and movement via Bezier Splines and some physics. It uses some really intense calculations while the game is running. Anyhow, the game is being ran on a dedicated machine with Win 7 and AIR installed. It should be able to function about 13-16hours in a row, since it is a part of a science centers show, and it should be touring europe in the near future as well. Needless to say having the app crash every few hours isn't really an option.
So, after about 3 hours (checking from Win 7 error log) Windows notifies me that the application has stopped working and it just freezes the whole thing. I've been running it over nights to see when this error happens, and it seems to happen pretty consistently after around 3-4 hours of runtime with constant games. (having the game play itself)
This is what Windows error log says
Faulting application name: APPLICATIONNAME.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4b66b0f3
Faulting module name: Adobe AIR.dll, version: 1.5.3.9130, time stamp: 0x4b66b06a
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00256e29
Faulting process id: 0xaf8
Faulting application start time: 0x01cae2f060312579
Faulting application path: C:\Users\Muffinssi\Desktop\APPLICATIONNAME.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe AIR\Versions\1.0\Adobe AIR.dll
Report Id: 2b358e12-4efb-11df-84f7-64b9e8d85ac7
Now from what I've tested from extended running of the game by itself, it doesn't leak memory, and it doesn't seem to throw any Flash based error at all. I set the Debug flag on the installed AIR app, and checked the trace log for any errors, there were none. Also no flash/air specific modal window about an error, only the Win 7 error about it stopped working.
I am at a loss here, what could be causing this error? Any ideas on how to fix this? I would really appreciate it!
Cheers
Niilo

• Digitally signing AIR apps for the client

How does a developer digitally sign a client's application
without requiring the client to have to purchase the certificate?
We want to do this for them. Are there any options for the
developer?

What happens when a certificate applied to an AIR app.
expires? Does anyone know the technical details of the process? Is
the expiration date embedded in the cerficate? Will the installer
just revert to an UNKNOWN publisher or present another message,
such as certificate expired? Will the installer still work?
My Web guy thinks we can purchase the certificate for our
client after discussing this process with them, by being listed as
the technical contact and getting their contact info (like we can
with SSL certificates). We do NOT want to put the customer through
the below steps. There is a document though on Thawte's website
that says the business and technical contacts must be from the same
company though. This document
(https://www.thawte.com/guides/pdf/enroll_codesign_eng.pdf) says
nothing about AIR though.
Here's some text Thawte sent me:
ENROLLING:
1. Visit
https://www.thawte.com/process/retail/new_devel?language=en&productInfo.productType=devel 2
2 Select the Adobe AIR Developer Certificate
3. Enter the required information in the enrollment process
"step 1 Configure your enrollment"
Note: As part of this process a private/public key pair will
be generated by thawte. The private key will be automatically
stored within the Firefox keystore.
4. Click Submit to complete your enrollment.
5. Click Accept after confirming that all information entered
on the enrollment page is correct.
6. After the certificate is issued, log into the status page
using the link provided in the confirmation email to download the
certificate.
7. Click on "Fetch Certificate" and the certificate will
automatically be saved to the Firefox keystore.
8. Export the private key and certificate from the Firefox
keystore.
The exported file can now be used to sign the Adobe Air
application.
FIREFOX INFO:
You must use FireFox to initiate the Adobe AIR developer
certificate browser and to obtain the certificate.
1. Visit
https://www.thawte.com/process/retail/new_devel?language=en&productInfo.productType=devel 2
2 Select the Adobe AIR Developer Certificate

automatically be saved to the Firefox keystore.
8. Export the private key and certificate from the Firefox
keystore with this solution: SO6899
The exported file can now be used to sign the Adobe Air
application.
The a guide to signing the application can be found in SO6896
Note: When exporting the private key and certificate from
Firefox, it ill be exported in a .p12 (pfx) format which ADT, Flex,
Flash Authoring, Dreamweaver, and Apatana tools can consume.
Thawte will perform an Identity verification process, which
may take 2-5 working days, and may need additional information.
https://www.thawte.com/ssl-digital-certificates/free-guides-whitepapers/pdf/enroll_codesig n_eng.pdf
After verification is complete, Thawte will email you
instructions on how to retrieve the certificate.
Please make sure that you retrieve the certificate using
Firefox.
How to export the private key and certificate from Firefox to
sign Adobe®AIR™applications
Solution ID: SO6899
Adobe®AIR™ Developer Certificates can use a .pfx
or a .p12 file to sign applications. Please follow the steps below
to export the certificate with the private key from Firefox:
1. A. Start Firefox
B. Select Tools
C. Select Options
D. Select Advanced
E. Select Certificates
F. Select Manage Certificates
Note: On a MAC OS go to Firefox > Preferences >
Advanced > Certificates > Manage Certificates
2. Select your signing certificate you retrieved from the
status page and click the Backup button.
3. Enter the file name and location to export the certificate
and private key to and click Save.
4. If you are using the Firefox Master Password, you will be
prompted for your master password for the software security device.
5. From the "Choose a certificate backup" password dialog
box, enter a password to create/export the certificate.
6. Enter the password twice and click OK. You should receive
a successful backup password message.
7. Use this .p12 (pfx) file within ADT, Flex, Flash
Authoring, Dreamweaver, or Apatana tool.
When prompted for a password, use the password for the .p12
file export in step 5.
8. Sign the application.
Follow the steps below to sign Adobe®AIR™
applications:
1. Open AIR Application and Installer Settings from the Adobe
Air application
2. Click Set button under Installer settings, next to Digital
signature
3. In the Digital Signature dialog box, click Browse.
4. Select the certificate.
5. Enter a password.
6. Click OK
The application now has the digital signature applied.

• Sending data between 2 AIR apps on seperate machines

Hi.
I am wondering if it is possible to somehow send data, i.e
input text or image data between an AIR app installed on 2 seperate
machines? I dont want to have to send the data from the first
machine to an online server and have the second machine have to
check the server for updates. If possible i would like to link the
two apps directly? is this possible?
Barry

This isn't possible right now. Flash 10 has a new feature
that allows a connection between two machines after going through a
"matchmaking" server. This will become available to AIR
applications in the next release.
