Udev and hal are unstable

udev and hal behave unstable in my laptop.When I boot my computer,it sometimes take lots of time to finish,but sometimes it fast.For example, sometimes in "udev event" stage I wait 10s ,but sometimes I only wait 3s.So it is when load hal.
I also discover my archlinux run faster when it boot quickly then when it boot slowly.
what is the problem?

AutoMounting / Udev and HAL

Hey fellow Archers,
Sorry if this is a bit of a Noob Question.
But I am having issues with automounting usb drives that etc.
I am running eeepc 1000 and everything works fine out of the box. But I have shown Arch to a friend of mine and we can't gain access to the usb drive with free.desktop permission error. I have read the wiki and forum posts. However I have found the are for much older versions of HAL and Udev, and they are contradictory.
Please if you could help me clarfiy a solutions. Should Udev handle to mounting and permission rule or should I add HAL policy ?.
If HAL if the best solution could be so kind as to provide a example of Hal policy as my previous attempt to edited HAL has failed.

Rt2x00 and rt2500 are now in [unstable]

Recently SMP support was added to the rt2500 CVS and thus as it is such a common device, I've added packages for beyond and vanilla, to [unstable].
rt2x00 has been approaching a somewhat workable state, and it can be used by some. It doesnt work for me, but feel free to give it a shot, it's also in unstable. I'll try and update this as often as I can. if you decide to build the PKGBUILD yourself, be aware that it will complain, as the directory inside the tarball keeps changing names. You need to update this to reflect the latest snapshot. I have not used public CVS as the rt2x00 project has been having problems with it being out of date.

Filesystem Error (UDev and mounting)

I'm having trouble with my filesystem(s) on startup. These problems began after I cleaned my case using compressed air / vacuum, though I don't think I jostled any hardware. My original filesystem was set up like this:

At this point, I'm not exactly sure where the problem is. I suspect that the filesystems themselves are ok (based on the liveCD tests), so perhaps the problem is the filesystems are inappropriately mounted under /media/* when they are not supposed to (ie before fsck during startup). Also, UDev (which I assume does this mounting) thinks these partitions are USB HD type directories instead of internal SATA partitions. Finally, the errors in dmesg referring to the flexcop module might be a red herring? Please help - I'm not sure what next step to take.

Thanks for your reply. I did not disconnect any SATA leads. I mainly cleaned the CPU heatsink and fan.
I am able to boot through UDev and get to filesystems checks without the LiveCD. More specifically, on boot without the live CD, both drives are recognized by the bios and Grub 1.5 is loaded, presenting options to boot into Arch Linux, Arch Linux Fallback, or Windows. If I select Arch Linux, boot messages scroll by, then I see:

At this prompt, if I press Control-D, the system reboots. If I log in using the root password, I see a root prompt. At this point, /proc/mounts already has partitions in it under /media (again this is without any LiveCD). Each directories' contents under media seem normal.
Interestingly, as I posted above, mount reports that both /dev/disk/by-uuid/dc4661 and /dev/sda3 are mounted (to / and /media/usbhd-sda3, respectively), although this is actually the same partition.
I should mention I have also run the bootable disk utilities provided by Seagate and WD for each drive and have run their diagnostic studies, which were unrevealing (each ran for ~1.5 hours).
After seeing the sda1 error messages in dmesg, I booted to WinXP from GRUB. CHKDSK ran and the system booted normally. I ran CHKDSK again from within WinXP as well which revealed no errors. Then, booting into Arch produces a few new errors in dmesg (which are probably irrelevant to the main problem):

Udev and rebuilding kernal

hi, i just installed arch for the fouth time. I am trying out different ways to run the kernal. I have ide, but no raid or sata, so I removed the ones that i do not need, but now when i boot it does not mount the drive and i cant get to root. i need to rebuild the kernal but i dont know how.
also there is a big lag starting udev uevents. i tried puting pci=conf1 and then pci=nobios at the kernal line but they do not stop the lag. i cant find a solve at this board.

You know, if you don't know what you're doing with this, you should probably either NOT be messing with it, or at least know how to debug things.
For starters, your mkinitcpio image has "base udev ide". This is fine, but if you're trying to minimize modules, you did just the opposite:

Further more, if you REALLY want to minimize the set of modules and the hooks in mkinitcpio, the config file /etc/mkinicpio.conf actually explains what to do:

Now, after all this is said and done, I'm still going to recommend you do not edit this image and use the default. This is boot you're messing with and if you don't know what's going on under the hood, you have the potential to make your machine unbootable.

yesterday, before upgrading the system (pacman -Syu - think it was udev etc.) i had the devices eth0, eth1, eth2 and sit0. eth2 was my wireless (ipw2200) device. now, after reboot, all devices but eth0 and sit0 are away. what's happened? any ideas? where i can get an older version of udev? i have no old udev-pkg in the pacman-cache. i also had renamed the /etc/sysctl.conf because of errors at bootup.

I thought so as well. But since yesterday's udev update, hotplug is definitively broken for me on both machines.
Obviously hotplug doesn't load modules and bring up interfaces any more. I don't know how this is related to udev, but just look at this:

So there is a relation between hotplug and udev, because udevsend handles hotplug requests. It also did so with udev 058-4, but 058-4 worked perfectly.

now my problem:
i try to setup a udev-rule for my thinkpad T61 when the latptop is (un)docked from the station.
i try a lot of thinks... RUN+=" and such stuff -- but my script takes very long time (Setup Interface, WakeOnLAN, multiple cryptet mounts from my homeserver etc.) and killed by systemd after a while.
related to this (jasonwryan.com -- Scripting with udev) and this (bbs.archlinux.org -- Automating a script for a usb device on systemd?) i create a udev-rule like this:
/etc/udev/rules.d/10-thinkpad-dock.rules:
TAG+="systemd", SUBSYSTEM=="platform", KERNEL=="dock.3", ACTION=="change", ENV{SYSTEMD_READY}="1", ENV{SYSTEMD_USER_WANTS}="dock.service"
and a service-file like this:
/etc/systemd/user/dock.service

Description=User docking actions
After=graphical.target sys-devices-platform-dock.3.device
[Service]

Facebook games are unstable, please help.

Dear Support Forum,
Today I got a new PC and I quickly found out that Facebook games like Jetpack Joyride are very unstable; the framerate frequently stutters and there are also slight slowdown/speed problems. The audio is fine, though.
These are my system specs, sorry if I forgot something. Everything is up to date afaik.
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) // Intel Core i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz // 16GB Ram // Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 // Firefox 19.0.2 // Flash Player 11.6.602.180
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? A compatibility issue, maybe?

I found the problem, it seems that FireFox is pathetic at running Flash games. Google Chrome works much better, I can play them flawless now.

Upgrade quality and Hal - again

Upgrading Arch is a hit or miss operation. Usually the kernel is not panicking, usually the settings in Firefox and other apps are carried over, quite frequently even Hal is working after an upgrade. Too often, though, this is not true.
On my system, Hal has intermittently been working fine, partly or not at all after upgrades over the last year. Today it stopped working again, so I searched this site and found this suggestion for the .xinitrc file:
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session ck-launch-session startkde
This helped me to at least get access to a dvd, but not to unmount/eject it. Dolphin displays a msg about the device being busy, and here are some tidbits from the command line:
[pelagos@blabla ~]$ umount /media/Trav_20091128
umount: /media/Trav_20091128 is not mounted (according to mtab)
[pelagos@blabla ~]$ ls /media
Trav_20091128 cd dvd fl
[pelagos@blabla ~]$ eject

Something in the system is obviously aware of the mounted dvd and, funnily, after several unsuccessful tries, the dvd is magically released and ejected. As if a time-lock had been set...
The latest upgrade also changed all the fonts on my system, including Firefox, and Firefox has even lost my passwords. Not exactly what you want if you happen to have work to do...

and everything went fine, luckily,
then I had this error:
ghc: /usr/bin/haddock existist in filesystem
shall I simply delete this (symlink)?

well, I deleted it, and went for the next (last) step of the recipe
pacman -Su
but got:
glibc: /lib exist in filesystem
EDIT 2:
After deleting /lib/modules/ following the wiki recipe cited on this page it finally worked.
Quite complicated, the whole thing, but thanks to everybody for the help.

You need the new versions of both to sync data between them. If you don't have the new versions on your Mac, they will not sync.
BTW, the new versions do NOT overwrite the old on Mac. When you install them, the old versions are retained.

I have tried following the fixes suggested by the support on iTunes, to no avail. my computer said that my iPhone 5 is "older" and that usb2 is not compatible with usb3 on my computer. it worked until a week ago. can someone help?

This article can help you find out if there are any conflicts between your copy of Windows XP and iTunes, and can tell you what to do if there are. Before going down the troubleshooting route though, you should take a look at this article, which can help you back up your entire iTunes library to an external hard drive, so if this issue is recurring, you will be able to restore from that backup and will not have to worry about losing your playlists or music again:

Oops, I forgot a step between 7 and 8 ... before syncing the iPhone I need to explicitly send the document back to iTunes on the iPhone, or the changes won't come over at all ...
and then one more thing ... Numbers on iOS does NOT recognize a number of key features of the OSX app, such as conditional formatting ... so after editing my document on iOS and syncing it back to OSX on my Mac, all of those settings are lost (no more conditional formatting, have to do it all over again)
What am I doing wrong ?
