Ultrabeat Sounds as Mono Aux Objects

Hi, am using my ultrabeat as my drum machine in logic, i would like to route the kick drum to aux channel 1 for example, and to have the kick drum played in mono.
i have done this, and clicked the circle on the aux channel strip to make it a mono channel, but i don't think it is in mono as :
1. when i convert the aux channel to mono the 2 sets of l.e.d lights on the channel strip remain, instead of converting to a single strip like a mono audio channel.
2. the ultrabeat sends its sounds out of the ultrabeat as stereo pairs, does this mean i cannot make the kick drum mono?
I only want to make the kick drum mono really as i have heard it gives a fatter sound.
I would also like to make an audio instrument channel mono (for my bass) but i cannot see the button on the audio instrument channel strip to turn it into mono???
Any help would be gratfully recieved,
thanks all.

I don't use Ultrabeat, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but since Ultrabeat sends out in pairs (3-4, 5-6, etc...), just pan your kick drum hard left, for output 3, hard right, for output 4.
As to why your Aux track is showing 2 led strips, even when turned to mono, I'm not sure. Works fine here. Do you have a stereo plug-in on the Aux channel? Try removing all plug-ins, and instrument inputs. Does it show one LED strip now?
Very few Audio Instruments allow collapsing to a mono version (that I'm aware of), some of Logic's instruments excluded. I would suggest routing the AI's output to to a mono buss. Then it will be heard in mono.

  • Can't get more than one Ultrabeat sound setting in one project. If I have a drum track with an Ultrabeat "downtempo kit" and I make another drum track with "hip hop kit" in the same project, the settings of the other track transform to "hip hop" setting.

So here's my situation.  I'm using Logic Pro 9.  I'm trying to use multiple drum tracks each with different Ultrabeat settings.  So let's say I have drum track with a loop from Ultrabeat that has the "downtempo kit 2" setting on it.  If I make another drum track and create a different loop in Ultrabeat with a different setting, let's say "hip hop kit" for example, and put that loop onto the new track, then the previous loop that I had in the first drum track will still be the same loop but the sound kit settings change to that of "hip hop kit."  So I can have different loops, but they all have to be "hip hop kit" settings or "downtempo kit 2" settings.  I am unable to multiple kit settings.  Is there a box I need to check to turn some automation off or something, because this is pretty inconvinient?  Why do I have to have only one Ultrabeat sound/kit setting per Logic project?

Sounds like maybe you're using the same channel strip on multiple tracks? Make sure you're creating a new software instrument channel strip for each independent instance of Ultrabeat you want to have. If you use the same CS, then all tracks that use it will have to have the same kit.

  • How to create a mono output from a mono aux send?

Trying to create a mono output from a mono aux send but option available is only a stereo output. Any way to force a mono output?

Yes - I'm aware of the mono vs stereo. Let me outline more precisely what I'm attempting to do. (By the way, I know this can be done as I do it easily in MOTU's Digital Performer.) The desire is to create a mono send inside Logic that I can then send out through my MOTU interface into a Lex 300 reverb unit. I then take the analog outputs from the Lex 300 and bring them back into Logic. I want the send to be mono as I am mostly sending from mono recorded instruments and voices. So chain would look like this:
    Track 1
    Send Bus 8
    _Bus 8 Mono output_
    MOTU 2408 Input
    Patch Bay cable
    Lex 300 Mono input ///
    (now coming out)
    Lex 300 Stereo Out
    patch bay
    MOTU Stereo Inputs 15/16
    Logic Stereo Input 15/16
    Mix.
The problem with the chain is that I cannot select a _mono output_ - it only allows for a stereo output. I can pan it one way or the other but it still does not seem to function correctly and toggling the mono/stereo button does not change the fact that this is still a stereo output. I hope this does not make it more complicated - it seems like there should be a simple solution. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Even number bus sends to Aux objects don't work

This is a strange problem, but I am new to logic. I think I have the whole bus/aux thing figured out, thanks to many explanations. Any help on this behavior would be nice...
    Here's my setup:
Pretty simple song - 12 tracks recorded live
3 stereo buses on bus 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 - used as groups for vox/drum/instrument submix - all work fine with some group compression, eq, etc. I set the individual channels to output to the buses. The bus outputs go to Out 1-2
One stereo Aux (1-2) - fed by bus 7-8 from the individual drum tracks - no input from bus send 8 (left side of the aux only working) - trying to do stereo parallel compression - don't really care if panning gets screwed up yet - but need to figure that out somehow.
    5 Effects Aux channels
All are mono Aux with m->s effects, output to Out 1-2.
Aux 3 - Long delay (fed by bus 9) works fine
Aux 4 - Vox verb (fed by bus 10) - never gets an input
Aux 5 - Vox super short delay/chorus (fed by bus 11) works fine
Aux 6 - Instrument verb (fed by bus 12) - never gets an input
Aux 7 - Drum verb (fed by bus 13) - works fine
I have tried deleting all of the aux's in the environment and recreating them - still get the same behavior.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It could be that you have Universal Track Mode disabled.
Under the Audio Menu, go to "Audio Hardware & Drivers", and make sure it's enabled.
    See if that's it...

  • What's the difference between an audio INPUT and AUX object?

Can someone explain the difference between an audio INPUT and AUX object? They both seems to do pretty much the same thing ... when would you use 1 over the other?

    revDave:
Suppose you're recording a guitar track and you want to add a very gentle compressor to avoid overload during the rec process. you need an audio input channel with a compressor inserted. this way, your guitar will be recorded with the compressor processed. If you use audio and midi gear and want to bounce your material, put all your midi audio in an audio input channel. This way, you don't have to use a real audio channel to record them. You can hear them, even use some plugins, and have them bounced with your audio channels.
Now, suppose you recorded three vocal channels, and want to use an equalizer. You need an aux object to send your vocal channels and use only one eq. This is very useful when you have similar materials recorded in diferent channels (2 guitars, vocals, pete/sax/bone, and so on). Send their outs to an aux object, insert the fx you want, and set the aux object's out to the main out of your project, and it's done.
    I hope it helps you.

  • Effects on individual ultrabeat sounds?

hi. can anyone tell me if effects can be used on individual sounds in an ultrabeat pattern instead of everything at once, and if so how?

Yes, use the mutiple-output version of Ultrabeat, not the stereo version, and just bring up the extra outputs into new Aux channels. Now in Ultrabeat you can route any voice to any output, which will have their own dedicated channel strip.
See the manual for more details on multichannel instruments and how to route them.

  • Change sound to mono to normalize audio of a movie?

Hi, newbie here. Sorry if this is obvious, just trying to learn & can't find this in the help docs so thought I'd ask here:
Without trying to sound like a whiner, it seems like no matter what DVD, TV, DVD player & recorder I've bought since 2000 I have to keep the volume remote in hand the whole time due to needing to turn up the sound to hear what the actors are saying then having to turn it down quickly due to explosions in the movie, loud background music, whatever (I live in an apartment so don't want to hear it from the neighbors).
I figured it might have to do with being forced to buy equipment with 5.1, surround sound, whatever.
I've tried a Surround sound Processor hooked to my TV but that didn't work.
So maybe I don't want mono as such but I just wondered what the best methods are for normalizing volumes for movies in APE7 if I rip amend and reauthor (and yes, the copies would just be for my own personal use etc. just my playing copies).
So let me know how to do this if I can with APE7, if not, any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the replies. :)

For the problem with your listening enjoyment, you might want to recalibrate your system a bit. In most Hollywood-type movies, the dialog is mainly centered, with some spatial info and bleed to the Front Left & Right. This is where it should be, and the main reason for the Center channel. Most systems come setup with the Center channel attenuated about -6db. This means that the SFX, and usually the music, overpower it. Next the audio engineers punch UP the SFX and the music some more. This is often done for a bit of "shock factor," and to let your LFE channel really prove that it can work. What ends up happening is that the Center channel is now ~-9db to -12db down from the rest of the audio programming, i.e. very hard to hear, especially when the actors are whispering. By recalibrating your system to diminish the LFE a bit, and increase the gain of the Center channel only, you will likely realize a vast improvement in listening to most movies.
When I mix for DVD, I always work to keep the dialog clean, fairly centered (unless we need to explore the spatial relationships), fed to the Center, with about -3db bleed to Left and Right Front, and also make sure my music is way, way below the level of the dialog.
Obviously a test DVD and a good sound pressure level meter would be ideal for this, but you can do it via listening. The biggest hangup is that the controls for the receiver are usually ill-placed to get an idea of how it sounds from a normal listening position. It is best to attempt this with two people - the listener and teh person at the controls.
Now, you mention 5.1 audio. I do not believe that PE can Export, or author DD 5.1 SS. I can Import it, but the output will be stereo. Premiere Pro, with the SurCode plug-in, CAN Export DD 5.1 SS for authoring in Encore.

  • Ultrabeat sounds missing?

    Hey,
Whenever I try to load a drum set in ultrabeat, it can't find a lot of the sounds. Some I have been able to recover, others I can't find anywhere in any of my files. Is there a way to restore all the original data from the install.
    Thanks,

Just reinstall the "Content" from your original disks.

  • The sound of 'mono' tracks is broken after a reistallation

    Evening,
I had to make tabula rasa of my Windows and after I re-installed everything I can't work with my old projects.
First I try to re-locate the files I used in my projects and it says 'The selected file cannot be linked because it has 1 audio channel(s) and the clip was created with 2 audio channels(2).' (I open the same .prproj file and try to link back the same .avi files I used.)
I managed to link them anyway after I opened the project, only to discover that whenever I try to play the clip, the sound of the videos turned to high-pitched screeching - but the sound of the stereo audio-only files is all right. This is how it looks and sounds when I open it and link all my files back:
PLEASE don't tell me to try to modify the files - those are THE files I used to create the project in the first place! Everything was perfectly fine, but after I reinstalled windows I suppose something is... missing from my system? Some codec, maybe?
I can't import those files into a new project either - I get the same screeching, even if I try to Modify > Audio Channels into something else before putting them on the timeline.
I am using 'Premiere Pro WDM Sound', and I don't have any other options. Installing and choosing ASIO4ALL makes ALL my sound disappear. I have Realtek High Definition Audio, latest driver. Windows 8. None of the devices are muted.
I recorder the files with BandiCam. MediaInfo describes the properties of the audio track of those files as:
    ID                              : 1
    Format                        : MPEG Audio
    Format version            : Version 1
    Format profile              : Layer 2
    Codec ID                    : 50
    Duration                      : 14s 928ms
    Bit rate mode              : Constant
    Bit rate                        : 320 Kbps
    Channel(s)                  : 2 channels
    Sampling rate              : 48.0 KHz
    Compression mode      : Lossy
    Stream size                : 583 KiB (3%)
    Alignment                    : Aligned on interleaves
Interleave, duration      : 24 ms (0.72 video frame)
Interleave, preload duratio : 24 ms
Whenever I try to import them, Premiere processes them as '11025 Hz - 16 bit - Mono' with 1 audio track.

The results are mixed... What I'm doing:
Exporting the file's audio to wav
    Renaming the wav to mpg
Importing it back with the original audio track disabled
Direct strim copy the file into another avi file.
    What I'm getting:
The old files I'm replacing work all right... I recorder them with a while back using Chromatic MPEG 1 Video I Frame. That's really something already! Thanks! (Even though I still don't understand why did it have to happen, and I'll have to do it with dozens of files... ugh...)
And then there's the new files... I switched to XVID (MPEG-4 Visual Simple@L1, according to Media Info) while recording at some point, and those videos are not synched (are faster than the audios) in Premiere (but not VLC or Windows Media Player). Any ideas how to deal with it?

  • Converting sound to mono

I have old 8mm video which I transferred onto my Mac through a pass-through with my miniDV cam.
When I play the clips in iMovie, I notice that only the bottom of the two volume level indicators shows any activity. I would like to convert the sound in the movie so that both tracks (left and right) play the identical audio - in other words, I'd like to convert this to mono.
Is this possible? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    -David

    Play the video in GarageBand.
You can then use GarageBand's "pan-pot" (..little knob which distributes the audio between left and right channels..) to move the audio to the centre (..i.e; play the same audio on both left and right channels).
    Then export back to iMovie.
One can also do this with an external sound editor such as "Audacity", but that involves "extracting" the audio first from within iMovie, and exporting it, opening it in "Audacity", copying one audio channel to the other, then re-exporting and importing back into iMovie again!

  • MacBook Sound Card - Mono or Stereo?

Is the sound card (specifically, the external mic jack) of the MacBook mono or stereo? Thanks.

Thanks! I can't figure out, then, why my portable guitar amplifier (Rockman) will not play through my MacBook. It should be a simple thing. You connect a mini-jack stereo cable from the line out of the amp into the external mic jack of the computer. It works perfectly on my PC. But on the MacBook, there is no audio output whatsoever. GarageBand does pick up a signal that you can hear when playing back a recording, but it's a neutered signal and nothing like what you hear through headphones from the amp. I was told that it might be because the sound card of the MacBook is mono, and the Rockman requires stereo. But I guess that's not the case. Very frustrating! I'd like to record with my MacBook. Do you think this issue is worth a trip to a Genius Bar?

  • How to create an Aux object on Arranger?

I've got an audiotrack open on the left, which's output is routed to Bus 8. Right next to it (and this is what I really do like in the OSX Logic ) is the channel-strip of BUS8. However, being in the arranger window, I can't help but wonder - how would I add this Bus 8 to the Arrangement? I know I can make copy with CMD-return to open up a new line of the instrument that I've got selected, and then I can go into the environment and use the Midi -Thru -tool to replace that instrument with Bus8 - but it feels, while a workable solution, like such an old way of doing things. Is there some better way of accomplishing this, please?
I tried to drag the object from the channelstrip to the Arranger and was met with no response.

Thank you, works perfectly - and is much nicer than the "CMD-enter" + "Right Click to Reassign Track" thing that I came across after posting the original question.

  • Sound only MONO?

I bought KT3 Ultra 2 yesterday with Athlon xp and 256 ram. I have window xp. After I installed everything I tried to listen music it only comes out as mono. I have a stereo speaker that works for my other computer. I set up every audio configure thing of window xp and installed new via 4 in 1 and audio driver from both via and msi site. Is there a jumper or bios that set to stereo or is it the motherboard's problem? I can't live without music.

  • EXSP24 - How to create multiple outputs

When using the EXSP24 to play drum samples, is it possible to send different drums to different channels; eg bass drum to one channel, snare to one channel, etc?
I would like to be able to do this in order to compress drums separately and add low shelf filter to the bass drum only etc.
I have tried setting up different channel strips for the various drums but this means having the EXSP24 open on each of these tracks, and makes it hard to "play in" drum parts on the keyboard.
    Any suggestions?
    Bern

You would have to use an EXS instrument that has been assigned to multichannel outputs. I don't know if any of LE7's drum sets are; I'm still using Logic Audio 6. But LA6 includes the EXS Instrument Editor, which allows you to modify existing instruments to make them multichannel; unfortunately, the Editor has been left out of LE7, as I've found out. The Editor is now only included in Pro.
However, assuming you do have a multichannel drum set, you would select Multichannel (not Mono or Stereo) from the input menu of the Audio Instrument track and select the EXSP24 from there, and load the drumset.
To access the multiple outputs, you use Aux tracks. You can create more Aux objects in the Environment if you need them. Once the multichannel EXSP24 has been assigned to an Audio Instrument track, the Aux tracks' inputs will either default to the EXSP24's multiple outputs, or have the outputs selectable in their input menus. The Auxes start with output 3; the main 1-2 outputs of the EXSP24 always go through the output of the Instrument track itself.
Unless you know beforehand how the outputs are assigned, you'll have to play the set a bit to see which Aux track receives which drum(s).
For example, you could have kick in the main out, snare in Aux 1 (EXSP out 3-4), toms in Aux 2 (EXSP out 5-6), and cymbals in Aux 3 (EXSP out 7-8). This is using stereo Auxes. In the EXS Instrument Editor, sample zones are assignable only to stereo pairs of outputs, not single outputs.
For even more isolation (each drum to its own output), you'd have to set up the EXS instrument so that each drum is panned hard left or hard right in the pair. Then you create a mono Aux object for each drum; the input menu will then select a single EXSP output.
I think it's a huge omission (and hindrance to the user) for Apple to leave out the Editor. Not only could you make these changes to your EXS instruments, but you could create new ones from sample CDs - though that's a long process.
Redmatica's Keymap appears to be a more advanced and easier-to-use alternative to the Editor, but it's not available yet. http://www.redmatica.com/Site/Pages/KM.php
