Un register Macbook Pro

I am buying a new Macbook pro and giving my old 15" to my granddaughter. How do I unregister the unit from my ID to let her become the registered user? I am not worried about the software as I will move that over myself.

This is a little tricky so what I'd recommend is to:
Deauthorize your iTunes account.
Backup using Time Machine, Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. You will need an external HD to do this. Assuming you have been using TM this should be quite simple.
Then reformat and reinstall OSX using the Install Disks that came with the machine or your Leopard Upgrade Disk.
After you have re-installed the OS then using Startup Assistant migrate the applications from the backup you created. If you want to migrate your your data too you can do that as well. Remember though when you restore apps or data it's an all or nothing proposition.
This is the safest and in the long run quickest way.

  • Register MacBook Pro

    Afternoon,
I have just purchased a MacBook Pro from one of my friends who has gone travelling around the world this week. Luckily for him he won the MacBook through a competition at work which is causing me an issue with the warranty.
The issue I have is that when I try and register it the Apple website says that it isn't possible with the serial number. I'm guessing that it was manufactured 3-4 months ago which may be causing the issue, but being as when I purchased it I got it was still in the original sealed wrapping I don't want to take the hit of 4+ months warranty being lost.
The issue is, as he won it he didn't get a proof of purchase (which Apples site require) and because I have purchased it from him I also haven't got the proof of purchase. I have tried ringing where he used to work but due to data protection they won't speak to me about it!
Does anybody have any ideas ?
    Cheers

I would contact an Apple store and discuss the problem with them.

  • Registering MacBook Pro

Daft really, but when registering new MBP I choose Portables > MBP > but of the three options (13,15,17") none are clickable, there's no way to highlight the one I want to register, so can't go forward. Any ideas Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you used your Apple ID during Setup Assistant, your MacBook Pro is already registered to your Apple ID. Additionally, you can register your MacBook Pro in http://supportprofile.apple.com, logging in with your Apple ID, pressing "Add Product" and typing the MacBook Pro's serial number.
You can also enable Find my Mac to track your Mac in case it's stolen. Open System Preferences > iCloud, and enable Find my Mac. You will be able to track it through an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with the Find my iPhone app, or through http://www.icloud.com

  • Can I change the user account on a pre registered macbook pro?

I'm looking at buying a brand new Macbook Pro from someone who has only used it to do a system restore from a previous Macbook. It's a 2012 model and thanks to his system restore it is now running Mavericks. Can I update the user account to my name so that I have the latest version of OS X without reverting it back to Lion?

    Yes.
Specifically you create a new admin account with your name (or any other name of your choosing), log in with it and then delete the other account you don't want.

I am trying to register a product that I bought in 2010, so that I can report it stolen. I recieved a confirmation email, but it does not give my serial number, or any other infomation.

Too late!  You are suppose to register Mac products as soon as you get it because Apple's standard warranty lasts one year from the purchase date.   Apple Care last an extra 2 years.

  • Can Apple remotely activate 'Find My Mac' if given a MacBook Pro serial number?

I have a registered MacBook Pro that was stolen on 9-11.
I live on an American AF Base in Okinawa, Japan and filed a police report.
I have my serial number and have 'Find My Mac' apps for iPad, iPhone and MacBook.
My Apple ID recognizes that I have the feature fo the iPad & iPod, but NOT the MacBook Pro.
How do I get them to REMOTELY push the app to my MacBook when this PUNK gets online?
    ****** in Oki...

You can sync data without enabling "Find My Mac":

  • My MacBook Pro was stolen last night. I need the serial number. It is not showing up on my devices list. My iPads and iPhones are. I have used it to to sync my phones and pads as well having it registered with apple. Any thoughts? Thanks

SIgn in with your Apple ID, the same one you used to access this support forum.
Hopefully, you will see a list of all the devices you registered with your Apple ID, including their serial numbers. Let me know how this works out.
Edit to add: If you enabled "find my imac" on your Pro, you ought to be able to remotely lock it, or even wipe its memory. Click http://www.icloud.com/ sign in with your Apple ID and click the big green "find my iPhone" icon (nevermind the name, it will find all your devices provided they're running Lion or iOS 5).
Then file a police report and nail the b*****d.

Started a similar string before.  When I select a recipient in Messages on my Macbook Pro the name shows up in red and says the recipient is no longer registered on iMessage.  I know that they are registered.  Is there a problem with Contacts possibly.  The previous help has been appreciated but the problem persists.

    Hi,
Try iMessaging your own iPhone and see if your account is actually logged in.
It can appear "enabled" and On line but sometimes it is not.
Also try sending from your iPhone (number) to your Apple ID and see if it gets to the Mac.
If it does not use the Sign Out button.
    Then shut down the Mac
On restart add back the Apple ID to the iMessages account settings.
I also just checked My wife's iPhone as she popped up red.
It turned out her iPhone did not have Messages On.

  • I just bought the MacBook Pro 13" and it says I have Adobe Lightroom 5, but when I try to register it and put serial number , it only has 6 boxes. Do they mean serial number of my computer  because thats 12 digits

I'm trying to register Adobe Lightroom 5 on my new 13" MacBookPro Retina. When they say type in serial number , theres only 6 boxes. My macbook has 12 digits so I can't advance to next question. what am I doing wrong. It sayd that the adobe Lightroom 5 is on this macbook pro...Can someone help ?

Did you buy this directly from Apple or from elsewhere. I've never heard of Lightroom coming pre-installed so it sounds like you MBP might not really be "new."
Enter your serial number here to check the support status and see if the computer has been previously registered:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
If you did not buy it from Apple and that site shows any purchase date other than yours (± a few days), return the computer to the fraud perpetrators who sold it, get your money back, and buy directly from Apple next time

  • I bought a new macbook pro and iTunes will not let me purchase anything. All computers unregistered. This computer is registered. Cannot purchase anything using my apple id and my apple id works because i buy things on my i phone. What is the problem

I bought a new macbook pro and now every time i try to buy anything with my apple id it doesn't go through. I tried Ibooks and iTunes but neither one will work. I have registered this computer and even tried unregistering all the other computers but that did not do anything. I also checked my form of payment and that is not the problem either because i have no problems what so ever buying anything on my iPhone or my desktop computer.
    It is just this computer.
I try to buy something and something pops up and says... "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-45054). There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later."
And i have been trying later for 2days now.

Have you tried repairing disk permissions : iTunes download error -45054

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4053
The subject of buying/selling a Mac is quite complicated.  Here is a guide to the steps involved. It is from the Seller's point of view, but easily read the other way too:
    SELLING A MAC A
Internet Recovery, and Transferability of OS & iLife Apps
    Selling an Old Mac:
    • When selling an old Mac, the only OS that is legally transferable is the one that came preinstalled when the Mac was new. Selling a Mac with an upgraded OS isn't doing the new owner any favors. Attempting to do so will only result in headaches since the upgraded OS can't be registered by the new owner. If a clean install becomes necessary, they won't be able to do so and will be forced to install the original OS via Internet Recovery. Best to simply erase the drive and revert back to the original OS prior to selling any Mac.
    • Additionally, upgrading the OS on a Mac you intend to sell means that you are leaving personally identifiable information on the Mac since the only way to upgrade the OS involves using your own AppleID to download the upgrade from the App Store. So there will be traces of your info and user account left behind. Again, best to erase the drive and revert to the original OS via Internet Recovery.
    Internet Recovery:
    • In the event that the OS has been upgraded to a newer version (i.e. Lion to Mountain Lion), Internet Recovery will offer the version of the OS that originally came with the Mac. So while booting to the Recovery Disk will show Mountain Lion as available for reinstall since that is the current version running, Internet Recovery, on the other hand, will only show Lion available since that was the OS shipped with that particular Mac.
    • Though the Mac came with a particular version of Mac OS X, it appears that, when Internet Recovery is invoked, the most recent update of that version may be applied. (i.e. if the Mac originally came with 10.7.3, Internet Recovery may install a more recent update like 10.7.5)
    iLife Apps:
    • When the App Store is launched for the first time it will report that the iLife apps are available for the user to Accept under the Purchases section. The user will be required to enter their AppleID during the Acceptance process. From that point on the iLife apps will be tied to the AppleID used to Accept them. The user will be allowed to download the apps to other Macs they own if they wish using the same AppleID used to Accept them.
    • Once Accepted on the new Mac, the iLife apps can not be transferred to any future owner when the Mac is sold. Attempting to use an AppleID after the apps have already been accepted using a different AppleID will result in the App Store reporting "These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID".
    • It appears, however, that the iLife Apps do not automatically go to the first owner of the Mac. It's quite possible that the original owner, either by choice or neglect, never Accepted the iLife apps in the App Store. As a result, a future owner of the Mac may be able to successfully Accept the apps and retain them for themselves using their own AppleID. Bottom Line: Whoever Accepts the iLife apps first gets to keep them.
    SELLING A MAC B
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
    A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
    B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
    1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
    2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
    3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
    side.
    4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
    sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
    1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
    3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
    4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
    5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
    A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
    1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
    2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
    3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    4. Install OS X.
    5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
    6. Shutdown the computer.
    B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
    1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
    Utilities window appears.
    2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
    3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
    6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
    7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.
