Unable to right click shortly after start-up on Macbook Pro running 10.7.5

Hi. Earlier today I was using a Logitech wireless mouse, and suddenly I couldn't right click anymore. I was playing League of Legends and left the game and I still couldn't right click, neither with my Logitech mouse, or even the trackpad. I restarted the computer and when I logged in I was able to right click for a few seconds, then I lost the ability again. I am still able to use control + left click to access the right click functions, but am not sure what could have caused this problem.
I looked around and found old forum advice from as recent as a year ago, back to 2008. Those forums suggested I install a third party software, USB Overdrive, to search for certain files, which I have, or to delete particular ones, like AppleHIDMouse.kext, or com.apple.finder.plst. I turned off and on the double tap right-click function for the trackpad, and I tried at least three different mice, which work on other devices.
The only thing I can think to do is try to upgrade to Mavericks and see if that will have in it what I need to right click. Considering that I can right click until soon after rebooting, my best guess is that some application or process is running or stopping at start-up and causing my issue.

Very strange problem (no surprise to you).
I suggest you reset the SMC (and PRAM, if you are able). That cannot hurt and might help.

  • Unable to access/modify wifi after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro

I've just installed Mavericks OS X on my 2011 MacBook Pro. Although quite slow, everything seemed to go smoothly during the installation process. Once booted up in the new OS, I noticed immediately that I had no wifi connection on the device. I am unable to enable/disable the wifi, and more troubling, any attempt to make changes to Network settings seems to freeze up the System Preferences application. Once this occurs, the machine is basically useless. A series of restarts, shut downs, safe-mode boot ups, etc and eventually I was just getting a blank grey screen after startup (no login screen, mouse visible and working). At this point, I booted via the recovery partition and did a full re-install of the Mavericks OS X. Not surprisingly, it did not fix any of the problems.

  • Unable to find wireless network on Photosmart C4780 on MacBook Pro running OS X 10.10.3

I have been successfully using a Photosmart C4780 on my wireless network for a long time.  I had internet issues and the network name was changed.   Now I can't print wirelessly.  Tried reinstalling the software, but the program quits just before set-up.
    Help!!

    Hey there @physiocan!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I should be able to provide some suggestions that may get your Photosmart C4780 reconnected to your wireless network.  Due to the age of the printer there is no full feature software and driver developed for Mac 10.10.  Your printer requires the HP full feature software to setup the wireless through the USB cable.  Once the Wi-Fi is setup then the USB cable can be removed.  To reconfigure your printer to the new network name you will require a computer running the Windows operating system or a Mac with version 10.7 or lower.
Please post back and let me know!  You will only require another computer for the Wi-Fi setup.  Once the wireless is setup then you should be able to add it to your Mac 10.10 using the Apple Airprint drivers built into the Mac operating system.
Thanks again for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?

When I started my iMac today, it started beeping like an alarm horn.  I shut it down, and held the startup button a little longer to get it to start.  Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?  Am I screwed?  HELP!!

What you are seeing is a kernel panic, often but not always connected with a hardware or peripheral issue, so, unplug everything except mouse and  keyboard, reboot and hold the shift key as soon as your hear the chime, continue holding it until you see the Apple Icon and spinning progress indicator, then post back.
It will take noticeably longer than normal to start.

Mail application keeps shutting down short after start up - resulting in an error message. how can I repair what is wrong without losing my mail history?

Will I lose my emails I have on there? I have numerous client email files and can't afford to lose any of them. I do have everything backed up but I'm fearful of losing important client info. What if something happened during the back up and it doesn't have my files?

  • IE-unable to right-click and open new tabs

When I'm recording IE7 on Vista with Captivate 3--I'm unable
to right-click a link on a webpage and open the link in a new tab.
Right-clicking in the history or favorites window to open the link
in a new tab does not work either.
Anyone had this problem or know of it or have any ideas about
anything I can do about it?

    Hi arlhoolie,
I am not sure what the cause of the problem is, but it seems
to me you could work around this by capturing the opening of the
new tab using the keyboard shortcut method and then fix it in
Captivate when you edit the project.
To do this, you would change the caption so it mentions right
clicking over the link instead of the key combination. You would
probably have to move the mouse and highlight objects so they are
positioned over your link. If you need to show the right-click
context menu you can capture that using Print Screen or SnagIt and
then pop that into Captivate as an image. This way you would have a
slide that shows the mouse moving over the link and "right
clicking". The next slide would show the context menu and clicking
the 'open in new tab' menu item. The last slide would be the one
you already captured showing the new tab.
This method works pretty fast for me, though of course, it
may be easier and faster for you to try capturing it through
    virtual pc or other methods.
    IHTH

How to get rid of Pac-Man sounds
Shortly after starting Firefox the "music" reminiscent of Pac-Man starts. It is only on Firefox (haven't tried Thunderbird) even following an uninstall and re-install of Firefox. Just started today. Am using XP Home SP3.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Only today (5/21/10) ==
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648)

    Dear Firefox:
I am not amused with the pac-man music. I spent the entire trying to find a virus on my computer. I might have tolerated this as an April Fool's joke, but this "celebration" was completely unnecessary!
And to others trying to fix the problem ... I just uninstalled Cool Previews and that did the trick. No more bat-shit-crazy pac-man music.

  • New itune download. unable to right click copy

    new itunes download.
I'm now unable to right click copy and past album artwork on my itune library.
    Please can you help

The iTunes 12 Get Info dialog lacks right-click context menus (at least for now) but it still accepts most standard keyboard shortcuts and drag & drop actions.
    Delete Artwork
On the artwork tab of Get Into, tap the image in question, use Backspace or Ctrl+X. Delete doesn't work.
Or, tap the image at the top left of Get Info, this time use Backspace or Delete, it is Ctrl+X that doesn't work.
    Add Artwork
Select artwork, press Ctrl+C to copy, tap the center of the Artwork tab, press Ctrl+V to paste.
Or, select artwork, press Ctrl+C to copy, tap the small image area at the top left, press Ctrl+V to paste.
Or, you can drag & drop to, or sometimes from, the same locations.
You can also copy artwork from the Get Info dialog to Windows Explorer with the keyboard shortcuts.
If the source image is on a web page right-click and use Copy Image rather than copy. (With Chrome I get a one pixel wraparound so tend to go for a temporary local copy anyway - not sure whose bug this is, but it isn't new.)
If you have multiple images embedded drag the one you want to be the primary artwork to the leftmost position.
    Replace/Remove All Artwork
The top left image box can be used to add or delete art from multiple tracks. In either case all existing artwork in all tracks is replaced/removed.
    Old Style Get Info Dialog
Select some items, right-click, hold down shift, then click Get Info from the context menu. (Use alt/option on a Mac)

Start with the third box in  Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
If that doesn't work, use the steps in the second box to repair your iTunes installation. Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Backup Freezes shortly after start

I've a recurring problem with Time Machine, whereby the backup appears to freeze shortly after starting. No error message is reported and I can see nothing in the log.
At first it seemed to be caused by my children's log-in still being active but it's not that. It does seem to happen more when my wife has left lots of applications open, including MS Word with lots of documents.
I've checked the external disk (Lacie 500GB), even erased and reformatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), same as by iMac hard disk) but to no avail. Stopping the back-up does nothing. Pulling the cable or turning the disk off whilst kills the current back-up doesn't cure the problem.
The only solution is to restart and run a back-up straight away.
    Any ideas?

Unfortunately, a lot of things can cause this.
Let's take a look at the log: there may be a clue. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to one of these stalled backups, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

That sort of thing might slow it down a bit, but shouldn't be much.
I've checked the external disk (Lacie 500GB), even erased and reformatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), same as by iMac hard disk) but to no avail.
Also check the *Partition Map Scheme* shown by Disk Utility on the first line of the drive (the one with the make and size). It should be GUID for an Intel Mac, +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac.
Is your LaCie Firewire or USB? How is it connected?
Does it have it's own power supply, or does it get power from your Mac?
Are you running FileVault, any virtualization software, or any significant non-Apple software?
How much data is on your internal HD?
That info plus the logs should at least get us started.

When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

The 13" retina MBP has two fans, left and right near the hinge and about 2.5" each from the edges of the case.
My conjecture is that one of the fans may be failing.  An appointment at an Apple store genius bar is the best option.  The evaluation will be FREE and a fan replacement (if that is the problem) should not break the bank account.
You might run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
This may confirm my suspicion or perhaps find a different problem. Note that an error free result should not be viewed as being definitive.
    Ciao.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I have screwed up a bunch of settings etc. on macbook pro running preinstalled lion. I think I should is to wipe the computer and reinstall to start over again. I will loose nothing of importance except a few passwords.  Is this wise? How do I do it?

I have screwed up a bunch of settings, folders, photos, etc on my macbook pro running factory installed Lion.  To get everything straightened out, I was thinking I should do a delete and reinstall and just start over like it was a brand new computer.  I will only loose some usermane and password info and my history and cookies.  There is nothing else on the computer that is not on another device somewhere.  Does this sound like the right thing to do?  I cannot seem to find ways to correct the problems indivdually, though I am sure they are there.  If so, how do I do it?  My computer did not come with any type of disc, I do not believe.  Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

    Yes, that sounds reasonable.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process
          has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Hi, I have problem with starting up my macbook pro, the gray screen coming and the circle still turning

    hi
Could u please help me with the problem that I have with starting up my macbook pro?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
