  • I am unable to use an external microphone on my MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2008)

I have a dilemma.  I wanted to use Skype on my MacBook Pro as I have before (successfully) but I have a new headset so I decided to plug it in and use it.  I plugged the green headphone jack into the headphone jack on the side of the computer and did likewise with the pink microphone jack into the mic/line-in hole.
Skype seemed to work but I realized the audio output was coming through the headphone but the audio input was coming from the internal mic on the computer.  I went into Settings and found the sound control.  I tried to change from internal mic to external line in, which you can do, but there is no audio input at all then. Switch back to internal mic and all is well again.
The headset is new and works fine on my DELL so I know the issue is in the MacBook.  If I open the sound conteol and unplug the headphone from the jack the computer knows and changes the settings right in front of me from headphones to internal speakers... as it should.  The same does not happen for the microphone.  Nothing seems to happen with the external line in port.
I have run out of ideas.  Is there something I am missing here?  All I want to do is use the mic on the headset instead of on the laptop.  Seems simple enough.
    Thoughts?  Comments? Suggestions?  Ideas??

A USB mic would be the best bet. Blue make some outstanding USB mics. I would just return the one that you've purchased and buy a Blue USB mic.

  • External microphone

I can't get an external microphone to work on my HP Pavillion dv7 laptop.  I have read through most of the posts and nothing has helped.  However, I haven't seen anyone who has had my exact experience.  When I plug in either of two external microphones, one a single mike and the other connected to a headset, I can record but it is recording with the built-in microphone, not recognizing that anything is plugged in.  The reason I am sure of this is because if I tap lightly on the mike, there is little or no reponse on the vertical bars in the Sound Recorder program.  But if I gently tap with my fingernail anywhere on the computer frame, the bars light up right to the top.  Help anyone?  Thanx.

  • T420s - Unable to set high resolution when on external monitor via DP.

    Sorry, let me clarify -
Unlike the OP, I do *not* switch back to 50 Hz on battery. However, I am running the NVIDIA beta driver. I installed this because with the Lenovo driver, the machine was not outputiting 2560x1600 over the display port. The highest resolution it would output was 2048 x 1000-something (out of the office now and don't have the exact numbers).
So yes, with the Lenovo driver the external DP was working, just not outputting the highest resolution. Installing the Nvidia driver fixed that problem. Whether it is related or not, I don't know, but with this driver I do not get 50Hz resolution on the LCD on battery -- everything stays at 60.
I have not rolled back to the Lenovo driver to test whethe this is reall a driver issue, but suggest that the OP try out the Nvidia driver.
edit note: Change subject to match description.

The unable to set high resolution issue on the T420 (not the T420s) was sent to engineering by JameZ just a few days ago. See more here. I suggest you post there or contact JameZ so they know it also occurs on the T420s.

  • [CUPS] Unable to set my new CUPS server with an HP printer (solved)

    Hello,
I come from Gentoo and I just installed my new Arch Linux server on a notebook with 2 NIC ... Now, I'm trying to set the CUPS deamon to share printer (HP DESKJET 895Cxi) for 3 workstations in my LAN. Before, it was working (printer and linux ... has never been very good...). But now, I'm not able, and it's about 1 hour I'm looking for a stupid error that I don't know if it's important or not ...
(all is on my Wiki : http://pix-mania.dyndns.org/mediawiki/index.php/Cups)
Here are a list of installed package : cups ghostscript gsfonts hplip
    The printer (USB) :
    (lsusb)
    Bus 002 Device 004: ID 03f0:0004 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 895c
    (dmesg)
usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
usblp0: Disabling reads from problematic bidirectional printer
    usblp0: USB Unidirectional printer dev 4 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x0004
Current configuration (only change made to original configuration) :
    Listen <ip_serveur>:631
    <Location />
    Order allow,deny
    Allow From all
    </Location>
    <Location /admin>
    Order allow,deny

    </Location>
    <Location /admin/conf>
    AuthType Default
    Require user @SYSTEM
    Order allow,deny
    Allow From all
    </Location>
When starting cups service, all is fine : I can use a workstation to browse the Web Interface ... but printer seems to be not detected since it tells "No printers." when clicking on "Printers" tab. So, I go to "Administration" tab and, under "Printers", I click the "Find New Printers" and again, it says : "No printers found.".
Not goot ... so, like I was doing with Gentoo, I click on "Add Printer" ... then, I receive a redirection to HTTPS ... click on the link (or wait) and nothing happend (timed out): web interface is broken for HTTPS ... I really got no idea why HTTPS is not working .
After that, when updating the configuration (with vim) and restarting the service, deamon won't stop and I have to send a "kill -9" to the cupsd pid ...
I look in log and I can just see this :
E [09/Jan/2011:18:19:55 +0100] Unable to set ACLs on root certificate "/var/run/cups/certs/0" - Operation not supported
I googled for one hour, but is not more working right now ...
    Some questions :
    - the printer is not detected? Is it because of the ACLs errors ?
    - what the hell is "ACLs" for cups ? Never seen that before ...
So, right now, I got a working HTTP but not working HTTPS, with no printer available ... very useless
This printer is working "well" with cups, since it's an old model and it's a HP printer, so is "fully?" working on Linux ...
Any idea on what to do/try now ?
EDIT: after that message, I just refresh the page (I'm using Chromium) and ... magically, HTTPS was working (after accept untrusted certificate for HTTPS?) ... Then, go back to "Find New Printers" and now, it was working. Printer has been added ... Seems to be OK, but the "Print Self Test Page" doesn't work right now because of this :
    Unsupported format 'application/vnd.cups-command'!

EDIT3: I tested the ppd from cups (and not hpijs) and got the same problem ... The latest idea was to unplug USB and plug to another USB ... and it seams to works ... Now, the test page print "fine" ...
So, I shared the printer over my LAN, and tried to print from a workstation ... it works fine now ... when looking error_log, I can see than there is no more Ghostscript error .
But I have a last question .. if somebody can answer ... When choosing a PPD file, I have the choice between 3 version :
    - hpijs, 3.10.9
    - hpijs, 3.10.9.11
    - hpcups, 3.10.9
Don't know why onlyl the HPIJS got the ".11" and not any others ... I selected this one and here is what Cups say about the printer :
HP_DeskJet_895C_USB_ES29Z231JKGO_HPLIP HP DeskJet 895C Local Printer HP Deskjet 895c hpijs, 3.10.9.11 Idle - "ready to print"
I hope when upgrading the system, I will not get error from PPD file not found ... With my current PPD file, I get (really not sure) this error, but print is working so, it doesn't matter :

WD and their lack of support for Mavericks:
A recent email from WD reads:
    Dear WD Registered Customer,
    UPDATE: November 1st, 2013
As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks and are experiencing difficulty in accessing your external hard drive, please do not save anything to the drive, disconnect the drive from your computer, and contact Western Digital Customer Service at http://support.wd.com/country/ for further assistance.
The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years. However, solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.
    Sincerely,
    Western Digital
Which is basically Western Digital informing you that their out-of-date utilities don’t support Mavericks.
In any case those utilities are not the most effective. The moral of the story is: the first thing you should do after buying a WD drive is to format it as HFS Extended (Journaled) and not install ANY of their utilities but instead use reliable applications like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper - or Time Machine.

  • MacBook Pro and external microphone

We bought a MacBook Pro 15" Retina a couple of weeks ago. We wanted to use it the same way as our current PC laptop: hook up an external camera via BlackMagic Shuttle Express Thunderbolt (through the Thunderbolt port), hook up an external Sennheiser Freeport wireless microphone (through the 3.5mm combination headphone/microphone jack), and hook up a set of regular headphones (through the USB port).
The idea is to videotape an event, getting good quality audio from the presenter via the wireless microphone (our space has big limitations in terms of using wired devices), and monitoring the audio through the headphones. This is a scenario and a set up where several PC units have worked perfectly well in the past.
However, after spending over $2,000 on the MacBook Pro, we found out that the 3.5mm combination port will not take input from any of the microphones we have. This YouTube video explains exactly our situation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaiYc9Cqpis   (we did not create the video, but the video shows this is a common issue). On the video they explain the plug of a regular microphone has 3 rings or pins, while the plug needed for the 3.5mm combination has four rings or pins.
We spent about 45 minutes with Apple customer support, including a senior advisor, and we were told that as the Apple headphone/mic combination, the one you use with an iPhone (seen on the video above), works in the combination jack, both as a microphone and as a headphone, then there's no issue. Apple does not have any recommendation, solution, or adapter for using a regular 3.5mm microphone with the 3.5mm combination jack, so that an external microphone can be easily used. The senior advisor also suggested a USB microphone instead, but that means a) having a wired microphone, which is not possible in our space, b) buying more equipment, when we already have our equipment, and c) adapting all our setup to the MacBook Pro, instead of the machine being easily integrated into our existing setup (more likely, we will ship the MacBook Pro back instead).
A few discussions on the web (for example, https://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110505020946AA8izSV ) mention that this specific laptop expects a "line level" microphone signal, one that would come from a pre-amplifier, so that regular microphones would not be detected. The Apple senior advisor was not familiar with that claim, nor could he shed any light on it.
So our question is: has anyone successfully used an external 3.5mm microphone with the 3.5mm combination port on the MacBook Pro Retina 15"? If so, what kind of microphone did you use? Or, did you have to use any kind of adaptor or amplifier to make it work?
Thank you for any pointers you can give us.

We tried a number of 3.5mm splitters (to get separate headphone and microphone connections from the combo mic/headphone jack), and USB to 3.5mm converters (to get separate 3.5mm headphone and microphone connections from the USB port), but none of them worked.
The only solution we found to connect a microphone to a MacBook pro were the Shure XLR to USB convertor (http://www.shure.com/americas/products/accessories/microphones/microphone-proble m-solvers/x2u-xlr-to-usb-signal-adapter) and the Blue Icicle XLR to USB convertor (http://bluemic.com/icicle/). The Icicle is the cheaper back up for the more expensive Shure.
Both were recognized by the laptop, and both audio signals were detected properly. We are using them to capture voice only, so we don't know how they would fare when music and musical instruments are involved.

  • Why doesn't my external microphone work?

Yesterday I opened up Garage Band to do a recording. I have been using my Blue SnowBall  microphone, and in the past, even as recently as the day before, Garage Band always recognized that mic by name, and would ask me if I wanted to use it. Now the only option it gives me is “USB Advanced Audio Device”. Obviously an automatic update had changed the way it handled recognition of my microphone. As I selected this option, I found that wasn’t the only change that occurred. The instant I made the selection all audio functions within Garage Band immediately failed, not just recording, but playing audio as well. Once I reverted back to “built in microphone” then my audio functions returned. So my Blu Snowball is no longer compatable with Garage Band. Coincidently, seconds later Garage Band advised me of the newest version of Garage Band, and asked me if I would like to update. I have seen that question before, and the answer is no. I have had too many problems before with updating. Most recently I updated to Yosemite OS X and all my projects in i-Movie became corrupted. I also read on the net that the new Garage Band frequently causes older Macs to crash. So how do I return functionality to my microphone? If it worked before it should work now. Functions should not be taken away from me. I should not be forced into updates that bring me more headaches.

Today I found that when I select "USB Advanced Audio Device" for my "input source" that if I go to garage band "preferences" and check my "audio output" it has also been automatically changed to "USB Advanced Audio Device". I'm not sure what kind devices this update was designed to accomodate , but my device is nothing more than a microphone, thence the reason I have no sound. This will happen every time I turn on or plug in the microphone, but I can still use the microphone by manually going into preferences and changing the audio output to either "system setting" or "built-in output" every time I connect my external microphone. I thought I checked all my settings and preferences before when I was trying to figure out why I had no sound, but either I missed it before or there has been another update.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

  • I am unable to set my WD mybook world edition (white light) for time machine.

I have new iMac running OS X Mavricks 10.9 and a WD mybook world edition (white light) connected via eithernet to router.
I am unable to set up time machine using this drive.
I can see the MyBookWorld drive in Finder and read and write files with no problems.  I can also see the MyBookWorld_Backup drive but I am unable to connect.
Time machine can see the drive but when I select, use drive, it trys to connect and gives me an error message: There was a problem connecting to the server "MyBookWorld-Backup"
I have already updated the hardrive firmware.
    Any ideas?

  • EXTERNAL microphone not working on T61, Colleagues with T61s having same problem

I am unable to get any external micophone to work with my T61.  A colleague of mine spent hours with Lenovo support trying to get his to work but was never able to.  The internal microphone works but the quality is low.  I have tried several external microphones (3).  I verified the external microphones work with other systems.
As for drivers, here is what I have tried so far:
    SoundMAX driver uninstall
Installed Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio
Installed SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio driver (5.10.1.5520)
None of this made any difference.  When I plug in an external mic, all applications, including the SoundMAX Control Panel > Microphone >  Setup Wizard, detect zero sound from the external microphone.  I have muted/unmuted the external microphone, muted/unmuted the microphone in Windows, boosted/decreased the volume, used the Microsoft microphone troubleshooting wizard, etc., etc.
Please help!  Using an external microphone is very important for my work (speech recognition) and for several of my colleagues.  If we would have known external microphone do not work with T61s, my company would not have purchased these.  Now we are all stuck until we get new laptops again (2 more years)!
P.S. One strange thing I noticed while plugging and unplugging is that if I plug in headphones to the external microphone jack, one of the headphones (R, I think) becomes an "external microphone."  The quality is terrible but applications register sounds coming through the external headphones.  Why then have none of the 3 different external microphones I've plugged into the mic jack worked?!?!
    System:
SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio (Driver 5.10.1.5520, Location 65535, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ADIHdAud.sys is 5.10.01.5520)
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP2
    Intel Core2 Duo CPU
    T7300 @ 2.00GHz
    2.99 GB of RAM

I am having this same problem and am also using voice recognition software.  Have you found a resolution yet to this problem?  I have not.  Please share if you have.
    Thanks!

  • My external microphone isn't working, how do I fix that?

I have a new HP Pavilion g series notebook, and I also have an external microphone I use for singing, I had Best buys geek squad fix the settings so tha it would work, now a few updates have gone by and now it doesn't work again.  I did some tweaking in the setting and still it isn't working.  HOW do I fix it, I'm not a computer geek.

To whom are you trying to send an iMessage? If the receiver does not have iMessage it won't send it. Is the message bubble blue or green? Did you activate iMessage in your Settings (Settings -> Messages -> iMessage)?

  • Lion / External Microphone problem on Line-In port

I am having a problem with an external microphone on the line-in port on side .
I now have tried two mics: 1) Logitech and 2) Gear-Head
I can't get it to be seen on the system preferences nevermind any applications.
Hardware: MacBook Pro  AND iMac (purchased only 3 weeks ago).
Software:  Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (Build 11A511 from developer seed)
    The USB Mic works fine.
Headphone works fine  on same head set.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Patrick
Keywords:  mic, "no sound bars",  linein, ext microphone, Lion,  Screenflow, Screen Flow,

    OK, here is the deal!
The audio input on the side or back of the Mac is not for passive non-amplified microphones.  You need a microphone with a pre-amp or put one in-line between the mic jack (male) and the computer (female) audio port.
Watch this External Mic Issue Video for more specifics.
This is more of a general hardware issue and not that of OS X Lion.

  • "Unable to set directory" on Seagate 500gb Backup Plus USB Hard Drive

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro as of today, I'm upgrading from windows, and I'm having issues trying to set up my external hard drive to download torrent files. I know with Windows, I can plug in the hard drive cfrom windows computer to another windows computer and have no issues with downloading torrent files. When I tried to get the torrent to download a file onto the external hard drive I recieved this error message:
    Unable to set directory
Don't have enough permissions to write to '/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive'. Please choose another directory.
I'm currently using uTorrent to download Bit Torrent files. I also tried to move files already on the external hard drive into another folder on the same hard drive, and it will not allow me to move the files.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a solution to this problem?

I managed to fix the issue

  • Unable to set parent context for this record.

Has anyone seen this error when doing an import? In my case I was doing an import to the Opportunity Product record.
    the full error message is
Unable to set parent context for this record. Please make sure that the parent record is valid and you have permission to modify the parent record.
I was attempting to populate one field on the record with data.

    Hi,
Was there a resolution to this that you found, cause it's driving me crazy.
We've resorted to manually created a product in OnDemand with an EUI and exported it but we can't reimport it to overwrite it as we get the same error message "Unable to set parent context for this record"
The opty and the product both exist as they got manually created, although when you export them there are now 2 of them (I see this in reporting as well????)
Besides the Opty-Product External ID what else is required to do an import to overwrite?
    regards
    Alex
