Unable to to Share Folders in Sharing Preferences (Mac OS X 10.6.4)

Hi, I've been trying to share a folder on my local network but it does not appear online when saving the settings. I've tried almost everything; changing workgroup, shorter NetBIOS and computer name, and selecting the appropriate sharing settings. My firewall is enabled and sharing is allowed. However after multiple attempts in getting my Macbook to share files over the local network, it has not been successful. It was working before (earlier this year), but not anymore. I don't know if it is O/S related or firewall-related. I am particularly trying to located the shared folder from a Windows Platform. Please advise me. Thank you.

  • 10.9 unable to see share folders on 10.6.8

I have a mac mini running 10.6.8 being accessed via 10.9 iMac and I am unable to see certain shared folders.
I was checking on the Mac Mini an some folders have an extra space at the end of the filename. I remove the extra space, and now, I am able to see it on 10.9 iMac. I also notice that filename that contains "/" have the same issue.
I check on another computer running 10.8.5 and I can see all the folders that are list on the mac mini running 10.6.8.
Is this a common issue with 10.9 that it can't read "/" and an extra space at the end of a filename? Or is anybody else experiencing this issue?

    Hey,
I have got a similar problem.
    I use a NTFS-partition on OS X 10.9 and bootcamp.
I have had some folders on my shared NTFS harddisk with a "/" in the folders name. Example:"share/download".
Now all this folders disappeared and I can't see them anymore in OS. If I boot Windows via bootcamp, I can see the folders. The "/" is replaced with a ":", but the file location cannot be located and It is not possible to rename nor open nor anything.
For now all the data seems to be lost on OS and untouchable on windows...
    I want my folders back!!

  • Remove admin's default share from file sharing

I'd like to know if it is possible to remove the admin default shares from "file sharing".
For security reasons, I'd like only specific shared folders by AFP protocol become available for remote access and mapping.
By default, the OS X 10.9.1 automatically creates a share from the root folder (/) after activate the "File Sharing" option.

Are you logging in using the credentials of user account that is on the Mac.
It doesn't default to allowing access to the root of the hard drive. However, if you log into a Mac with a user account that has a user account on that Mac, then they will have access to the root of the hard drive over file sharing. Logging into a Mac is logging into a Mac no matter where you log in from.
If you want to limit the scope of file sharing users, create Sharing Only accounts in Users & Groups System Preferences. You can then give those users access to the specific folders you want to allow them access. They will not have access to the root of the hard drive unless you give it to them.

  • Unable to home share with iPod Touch (4th Gen) and iPad 2

Since I have upgraded to iTunes 11 I am unable to home share my HD movies to both my iPod Touch (4th Gen) and my iPad 2
I was able to home share all my HD movies before iTunes 11.
I know that the iPad 2 and 4th Gen iPod Touch can only support 720p, but by streaming/home sharing that was the work around.
But again, once I upgraded to iTunes 11... when I go on my iPad or iPod Touch I can no longer see them in my shared library.
Here is the crazy part though... if I go downstairs and get on my 2nd gen AppleTV... I can see all my movies in my shared library.
DO YOU THINK IT IS iOS 6.0.1 ????

There are no setting on the iPod. Unlike the iPad wich morrors the iPad display, TV out on an iPod only displays TV out on apps that support TV out. The Video app is one such app.
    Is that you problem?
    Otherwise:
    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

  • Can someone help? Trying to share folders across my network-.

New to Mac after years of Windows use.  I like to share my media across my network and no matter what I try I can't get my media players to recognize my Mac.  This is what I have done so far.  On the Mac I went to system preferences>sharing>I tick the "file sharing" window.  I then drag my shared folder titled TV Shows and drop this folder into the shared folders pane> next, I see to the right users of this Mac.  Here I see my name, system group, and everyone.  I have set all privelages to read/write and highlight my name.  Above this field I click options and click Share folders using SMB and directly below my name is checked.  I also manually entered the mac ip address with the folder TV Shows in the source window of media player and still nothing.  Just top check I restablished connection with my old W7PC and immediately all shares where visible.
Hopefully someone can help.   FWIW... I also highlighted the folder TV Shows and clicked Get Info to ensure sharing was set and it is.
    Thank you!

  • Reseting File Sharing Preferences for admin account

    Hello:
Was recently trying to network my macbook with my brothers Vista laptop.
Followed a few websites, could get his pc to access my mac but couldn't access the PC.
At any rate -- now I have been getting a lot of permission errors on my macbook.
I repaired permissions via disk utility. Still -- some folders are randomly loading up as read-only and I have to change them to read/write in getinfo.
Is there anyway to reset my sharing preference pane? Or at the very least stop the random permission errors.
Haven't had an OS issue prior to this.
    thanks.

  • Address Book (Sharing) Preferences hang

    Hi,
I've been wrestling with this problem for a few months now and have been unable to resolve it.
    Problem
    When I am in Address Book.app and select "Preferences" I get a spinning beach-ball of death. Eventually the preferences will appear. If I then select 'Sharing' I will once again get a spinning beach-ball that will eventually go away but the sharing preferences don't (usually) appear. At that point I also get an error in my console.log;
    2007-08-03 13:41:23.998 Address Book\[3063\] Read attempt failed (1,60)
    I have also seen additional errors;
2007-08-03 13:18:00.431 Address Book\[2810\] Could not find image named 'QuestionMark'.
    2007-08-03 13:19:34.256 Address Book\[2810\] Caught Read attempt failed (1,60)
    Additional information
    * I was running AddressX and have now removed it in case it was in some way related to this problem.
This error occurs on the other account I have on my MacBook pro too.
    I am running an up-to-date 10.4.10
I have no items in the 'Sharing' preference pane on either of my accounts.
I did have 'Sync with Exchange' ticked on one of the accounts (on which I have never used the address book). I have now unticked that option and the problem remains.
    Things I have tried
1- I have verified my disk. No problems reported.
2- I have run 'plutil ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist' and it came back OK.
3- I removed each of the 3 .plist files in ~/Library/Preferences/ in turn, logged out and in again and recreated the problem each time.
4- I removed the (Adium) add-in scripts that were in ~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/ and the problem still occurs.
5- I removed the (Skype) plugins in /Library/Address Book Plug-ins/ and the problem still occurs.
I wonder if there are any kind souls out there who can suggest any further debugging steps I could take to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance.
    chown -R us ./base

    Austin,
The fonts validated OK so I removed Address Book.app plus the preferences using AppDelete. This deleted all the relevant files including the .data file that actually holds the address book.
Whilst I was downloading the combo updater (even before I reinstalled the 10.4.8 version of AB) an iSync window popped up telling me that it was syncing and going to add 2 new addresses and delete 1189 (the number of addresses I have). I cancelled the sync. This was a surprise to me as I don't run iSync usually- I guess MacOS X maintains a separate address book somewhere.
Anyway- long story short- after the reinstall and update back to 10.4.10 AB is working fine. Thanks!
I still can't figure out what the Sync window was that popped up and how AB reinstalled with my full address book, but the world is a good place again. Thanks.

  • In August installed PE12  on Windows Vista with incorrect Sharing Preference for Email Client. Shows default Adobe Email Service How do I change it to Windows Mail?

Had PE6 previously to installing PE12 on Windows Vista.  PE 12 installation went OK except for the Sharing Preference for the Email Client. Existing  PE12 client is the default Adobe email service not the correct Windows Mail for Vista. How do I make this change..

    Hi,
I think that for PSE 12, you may need to switch to Windows Live Mail
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=29224
You may find that you then also need the following fix.
Freeze or error “There is no email program” | Share via email | Elements Organizer | Windows 7
I think that the problem is that the new versions of PSE do not know where to look for the mail client.

  • Share folders

    hello,
i want to share folders with my pc.
i opened the file sharing, but i only have access from my pc to the one folder not all the other subfolders inside.
Because i have a lot of subfolders i cannot share them all. is there an other way?
i also tried making my pc an administrative user, with no result.

HI, on the PC, make a new user same as the Mac's admin user, when signing into the Mac, use the Mac's admin username & PW.

  • Default File Permission not being inherited from parent Share folders

I'm having some trouble with file permissions
on one of my 10.4.7 file servers (running XServe).
New folders under Shared folders are not getting their
    permissions from the parent folders.
    Share permission is owner:rw,group:rw,everyone:none
but a new folder created below that becomes
    owner:r+w,group:r,everyone:r
and the owner for the new folder is the user who
created it and not the admin (for the machine).
I have the default permission to set to inherit permission
from parent but that doesn't seem to be working.
I have couple other Xserve 10.4.7 file servers that
is behaving the way I want, with default permission
is being inherited from the parent folders, and I've compared them but cannot find any difference between
    the two in their settings.
    Thank you,
    Tadashi

If you deny read and execute access for any parent folder, you've denied the ability to access its contents. The POSIX execute bit for folders is the switch that determines whether or not the folder's contents can be viewed, listed, or searched. If the contents are not enumerable, then it doesn't matter what their privileges are.
But be careful. Just not allowing execute for the POSIX owner, POSIX group or POSIX everyone else field may not be sufficient if you're using Effective Permissions. In this case, you'd want to inspect your ACL entries for the parent to ensure that the following controls were not in relevant ACL Allow entries: readextattr, readattr, readsecurity, list, and search. You could also create an ACL Deny entry which denies these five controls for the group or user you want to block out; but don't block the Everyone or Authenticated Users group because ACL Deny rules are evaluated in such a manner that they "subtract from" ACL Allow and POSIX permissions:
    E <=> (P U A)\D
Effective Permissions (E) are logically equivalent to the union of (U) applicable POSIX permissions (P) and applicable ACL Allow entries (A), taking away (\) applicable ACL Deny entries (D).
Further, POSIX permissions, P are defined as P <=> (u xor g xor o); they are either the permissions of the owner (u), group (g), or everyone else (o) fields, but not any combination of the two or three.

  • Tools Manage Folders to share folders pitfall to watch out for

Just thought I would share something I learned today. In Discoverer Administration, you have a Manage Folders function, which you access by doing Tools > Manage Folders. This lets you assign a folder to multiple business areas. An obvious advantage of this is that you only have to bring in one copy of an Oracle table into the EUL. Joins, item classes, and hierarchies associated with the folder are also available to all business areas as well, which also sounds great. Except if you are exporting/importing individual business areas rather than the whole EUL. Then you can run into potential problems with the import. At McCarthy, we do not use the Oracle seeded business areas. We develop our own. We have a development environment we use to create business areas and workbooks. When ready for users to test, we "promote" the appropriate stuff (business area and/or workbook(s)) by exporting out of development and importing to the test instance. When users approve what is being worked on, we then "promote" to production, again via export/import of business area/workbook. In this kind of environment, sharing folders caused us to run into import errors, because of trying to reference folders and joins and item classes and stuff that did not exist yet in the instance we were promoting to (had been created in another business area originally). I logged a service request with Oracle support. Support's reply is that it is their suggestion to customers to import a new copy of an Oracle table into a new business area, rather than attempt to share folders, because of this potential pitfall. So just something to consider if you want to try and share folders among business areas.
    John Dickey

    Rod,
I agree. That is another option. But it still faces potential danger. Let's say I create business area A. I import Oracle tables into that business area, say for project expenditures, project master, and people master. I create a join between expenditures and project master and a join between expenditures and people master. I create an item class LOV called Project ID LOV and assign project id column from expenditures and project master folders to that item class. I create an item class called Person ID LOV and assign person id column from expenditures and people master folders to that item class. Now I create business area B. I bring in the Oracle table for assignments. I use Tools > Manage Folders to assign the people master folder to B and the projects folder also to B. That sharing brings both item class LOVs into business area B, as well as all existing joins for those 2 shared folders. In B I do want to use the Person ID LOV. If I export and import the people master folder, I should be okay, since I am not bringing the joins or item classes in - just the folder. Next I do want to export Person ID LOV. If I then try to import that Person ID LOV, I will get import error, because this item class is assigned to a column in a folder (expenditures folder in business area A) that I have not yet imported to the target instance. So I would have to know and manage that I need to export/import the Expenditures folder first before I export/import the item class I want. Trying to manage all of this seems like it would be a pain, in my mind. You and others may disagree. The simplest process seems to be to keep the business areas self contained (or independent - whatever you want to call it) and then you can export/import using the business area option without any issues (or none that we have run into yet). That was the way things were being done before I arrived and after Discoverer training, which covered the Tools > Manage Folders function, I talked the folks into trying to share folders rather than importing new "copies" (really, a new definition) for each new business area. The concept of sharing folders across business areas sure seemed like the smart way to go at the time. Oh well, live and learn. But certainly what you have suggested would be another way to handle this kind of situation - cannot argue that.

  • Sharing preference on system preference has disappeared

I wanted to add a folder to share on my network and when I went to my system preferences I noticed that the sharing option is gone. Can anyone help me get it back?

it worked for me too, it's interesting that I discovered this just today when I was installing a VNC client to use from the iPhone and I couldn't find the Sharing preference pane to change the password...
    anyway, thanks a lot!

  • Understanding Share folders

    Hi,
I don't know if I will be able to explain this right because I didn't capture the information I saw. I thought I saw a little old computer icon under my “share” menu, when I opened finder and I noticed this icon with a number underneath that I have never seen before I got scared because I’m not sharing any folders. The thing is that when I clicked on it at last only a few seconds and then it disappeared.
Any idea why was this icon there?
Is it possible that I have some sort of spy ware?
The only thing I was using is my 1password, I was syncing my 1password from my iPhone with the one on my laptop, could this be the reason why this icon appeared? The thing is that I did this a few times and it didn’t appear.
Can someone help me understand how share folders work and what could be the possible reason why I saw this icon?
    Thanks a lot!

    Thank you for your reply!
Well, the icon looked like an old computer with a number on the bottom, and as I said I didn't have too much time to see the icon since this appeared for a few seconds only.
The location where this appeared was... If you open finder on your left where you see your Devices, Places and the Search For folders.
It looks like this was not spyware, It was probably my iPhone or my wife's laptop, next time I will put more attention if this ever appears again.
Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Share Folders with Team

I have CC for Teams an i need to share Folders with my Team. The same Folder should stay shared with my other Team-Members.
    How can i do that?

This question has been asked few months ago

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it will be released soon.

  • Contribute error: shared preferences file can't be found

I am using Contribute 3 (from Macromedia Studio 8) on a Mac
    (Mac OS X 10.5).
I have a connection to a server, and right now I have one
draft webpage. I finished editing it and wanted to publish it, but
when I did so, an error message appeared: Contribute can't find the
file with the shared preferences. To recreate it, the administrator
must administer the website again. (translated from German, not
    exact).
So I think it is telling me, as soon as I reconnect again as
an admin, this file will be recreated. But I am an admin!
If I click "connect" again anyway, it appears that the draft
webpage is loading again, but then it again says "connect" -
instead of "publish". So there is no way of publishing this draft
webpage. I also cannot download and edit any webpage.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for the help!

The problem is, just before I read your reply, I deleted the
connection. But now I can't create it again, because all of the
folders which Contribute created are still there and I can't delete
them. It says that it isn't possible to delete these files. I could
delete the webpages themselves, but not the images folder, the _mm
    folder etc...
And now when I try to create the connection using the
connection assistant, it tells me that "Contribute detected a
network- or filesystem-error. Repeat the operation or contact the
administrator, if the error appears again."
What should I do now? I thought if I just change the file
permissions it could work, but I can only get into the server with
an FTP app and I can't change permissions with that.
Last solution: I'll have to call my ISP ask ask if they call
delete everything. But is there a better way?
